It’s not often that Southeast Asia gets an advantage over Europe, but that is definitely the case for the Corolla Cross, which received a facelift a full year (five months in the case of Malaysia) ahead of the West. Predictably, however, the Old Continent does get a few exclusive upgrades to make up for the lengthy delay.

The updated front fascia with the body-coloured honeycomb grille is shared with the ASEAN model, but the strip joining the headlights are now illuminated, forming a light bar of sorts. The main lamps have been redesigned again with available adaptive LED technology and L-shaped daytime running lights framing illuminated “dashes”.

The LED taillights are also new with a C-shaped graphic and fins that are claimed to improve vehicle stability. Meanwhile, the rear number plate garnish now has the “Corolla Cross” graphic stamped on in, and there’s also a new six-split-spoke design for the 18-inch alloy wheels.

Further extensive changes are to be found on the inside, where the Corolla Cross receives a new, wider centre console, gaining a USB-C port, a Qi wireless charger, a sliding storage box and redesigned cupholders. As part of the change, Android Auto connectivity is now 1.5 times faster, matching that of Apple CarPlay. The shifter and gearknob have also been revised with a more modern appearance.

Elsewhere, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display is standard in most of Europe, joined by a larger 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen as part of the standard Toyota Smart Connect package. Refinement has also been improved through the use of high-damping materials at the roof bonding to reduce rain and road noise, as well as additional material on the rear ventilator area that suppresses noise and vibration for rear passengers. Engine noise is further dampened by a new three-layer inner dash silencer on higher trim levels.

In Europe, the Corolla Cross continues to be hybrid only, with 140 PS 1.8 litre (now named Hybrid 140) and 197 PS 2.0 litre (Hybrid 200) options, plus an intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD-i) version of the latter with an additional 42 PS rear motor. The all-paw model gains a new Snow Extra mode that enhances stability and control on slippery surfaces, using the rear motor to prevent wheel spin and maintain grip.

The regular European-market Corolla Cross facelift

For the first time, Europeans get a new GR Sport trim as part of the facelift, but this is not to be confused with the one offered in ASEAN. This one looks quite a bit more aggressive, with a massive octagonal lower grille and rectangular outer trims providing some familial resemblance to the latest facelifted GR Yaris and Corolla. This is paired with a 10 mm lower ride height, 19-inch machined Y-spoke alloys, gloss black logos and an exclusive Storm Grey paint option.

Inside, buyers receive Brin Naub suede-like faux leather upholstery with red stitching, GR-embroidered headrests and paddle shifters, and there’s also a unique Sport Mode that increases idle speed to improve throttle response and holds on to higher revs to increase engine braking.

2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport

Following its launch at this year’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), we now bring you full galleries of every variant of the facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross, of which there are three available, all locally assembled (CKD) in Bukit Raja, Selangor.

The line-up starts with the 1.8V that is priced at RM133,800 on-the-road without insurance and is powered by a 2ZR-FE 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine making 139 PS (138 hp or 103 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 172 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The DOHC, VVT-i mill drives the front wheels via a CVT with seven virtual speeds and a sequential shift mode.

After the 1.8V comes the 1.8 HEV, which was the only variant shown at KLIMS and retails for RM140,800. This comes with a 2ZR-FXE engine which has the same displacement as the base variant, but runs on the Atkinson cycle and adds an electric motor rated at 72 PS (71 hp or 53 kW) and 163 Nm.

2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV (left), 1.8V (right)

The engine alone makes 98 PS (97 hp or 72 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm at 3,600 rpm, with the total system output (factoring in the electric motor) being 122 PS. An E-CVT specifically designed for hybrids is used to transmit power to the front wheels.

At the top of the range is the 1.8 HEV GR Sport at RM148,800. This is a new variant of the Corolla Cross, as the pre-facelift GR Sport was not offered as a hybrid. The hybrid powertrain is identical to the 1.8 HEV, with both featuring a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery that has an energy capacity of 6.5 Ah.

In terms of styling changes, the new Corolla Cross’ front end gets redesigned bi-LED headlamps (with sequential turn signals) and a slimmer upper grille. Further down, the main grille sports honeycomb perforations and blends in neatly into prominent faux intakes at the sides.

The GR Sport is differentiated from the rest of the range by its distinctive face with more exposed intakes, two-tone paintjob, clear taillight lenses, rear bumper lower garnish and variant-specific emblems. Additionally, the range-topper comes with stiffer suspension, a performance chassis brace and a ‘Sport ECU’ for the electric power steering.

All variants are fitted with 18-inch wheels, with the 1.8V and 1.8 HEV getting them in a dark grey metallic finish, while the GR Sport gets two-tone units. There are five exterior paint finishes to choose from – Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic (HEV only) and Dark Turquoise, which is a new colour. The GR Sport pairs a black roof with either Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic and Dark Turquoise.

As for interior changes, there’s now a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system (previously 9-inch) that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. More significantly, the foot-operated parking brake has been replaced with an electronic parking brake that has an auto hold function.

The base 1.8V is equipped with a 4.2-inch colour multi-info display, but the hybrids get a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster with three layouts, four visual designs (Casual, Smart, Tough and Sporty) as well as real-time hybrid-specific displays.

The black interior of the 1.8V and HEV is decorated with dark brown accents, while the GR Sport gets an injection of red stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped gearshift lever knob and boot, and leather seats for that sporty feel. The front headrests of the GR Sport are also embossed with the GR logo, which also appears on the engine start/stop button.

Other features include an eight-way powered driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control (hybrid variants only), rear air vents, a powered tailgate with kick sensor, vehicle telematics with the Toyota MY companion app (for remote start and status monitoring) as well as a comprehensive safety suite.

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system uses a camera and radar to enable Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – All Speed and the Automatic High Beam (AHB). Seven airbags are also the default across the range, with solar and security window film included as standard.

A five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty accompanies each purchase, with hybrid variants getting an additional eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for the hybrid battery pack, inverter and power management control ECU. Buyers have the option to extend the hybrid warranty for another two years, which is transferable to the next owner.

So, what do you think of the latest Corolla Cross to go on sale in Malaysia? Which of the three variants would you go for? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV at KLIMS 2024

The 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift has been launched at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024 following the opening of order books last month. The refreshed SUV comes in three variants – two hybrid and one pure petrol.

The variants are the 1.8V (RM133,800), the 1.8 HEV (RM140,800) and the 1.8 HEV GR Sport that retails for RM148,800. As the outgoing GR Sport isn’t a hybrid, the latter is a new variant for our market. As before, the Corolla Cross is CKD locally assembled at Toyota’s Bukit Raja, Selangor plant.

The updated Corolla Cross sports a new front end that features redesigned bi-LED headlamps (with sequential signals) and a slimmer upper grille. The main grille just below also gets honeycomb perforations and blends in neatly into prominent faux intakes at the sides.

The GR Sport gets a very different front end so there’s definitely no confusion between the two faces, and there’s also a two-tone paintjob, clear lens tail lamps for a ‘smoky’ look, rear bumper lower garnish and GR/GR Sport emblems. The sporty one also comes with stiffer suspension, a performance chassis brace and a ‘Sport ECU’ for the electric power steering.

All three variants ride on 18-inch wheels with 225/50 Toyo rubber. The rims of the 1.8V and standard HEV have a dark grey metallic finish while the GR Sport rides on two-tone wheels. There are five paint options – Red Mica Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Silver Metallic, Celestite Grey Metallic (HEV only) and Dark Turquoise, which is a new colour. The GR Sport combines a black roof with Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic and Dark Turquoise.

Inside, the pure ICE base model gets a 4.2-inch colour MID, but the hybrids come with a 12.3-inch screen with three layouts and four visual designs (Casual, Smart, Tough, Sporty), along with real-time hybrid-specific displays, of course.

Infotainment is courtesy of a 10.1-inch touchscreen (previously 9.0-inch) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The biggest interior upgrade is the electronic parking brake with auto hold, which replaces the antiquated foot-operated parking brake.

Trim wise, the black interior of the 1.8V and HEV is sprinkled with dark brown accents. No brown for the GR Sport, which pairs black with red stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped gearshift lever knob and boot, and leather seats. The front headrests are also embossed with the GR logo. That logo also appears on the engine start/stop button.

All variants come with a powered tailgate that’s activated by placing a foot under the rear bumper. Of course, the boot can also be opened by the smart key, dashboard switch or the physical button on the car. By the way, cargo volume is a very decent 440 litres with the hybrid battery located under the rear seats.

Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport facelift, Thai-market; looks similar to the pre-facelift GRS

Speaking of the battery, it’s a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) pack supplying two electric motors assisting a 1.8-litre four-cylinder NA engine. The Atkinson cycle 2ZR-FXE produces 98 PS and 142 Nm of torque. Combined, the system has 122 PS, and 163 Nm of torque from the 72 PS primary motor is available from rest, which ensures good pick-up. Power delivery to the front wheels is via an E-CVT specially designed for hybrids.

By the way, you can start the engine remotely using the Toyota MY smartphone app. This also allows activation of the air-con so that the cabin can be cooled down before entry.

Safety wise, the Corolla Cross comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which uses a camera and radar to power Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – All Speed and the Automatic High Beam (AHB). There’s also a vehicle telematics system with three years of free subscription. Solar and security window film is included.

The vehicle warranty is for five years with no limit on mileage. Hybrid models get a separate eight-year unlimited mileage warranty for the hybrid battery pack, inverter and power management control ECU. There’s an option to extend the hybrid warranty for another two years – the warranty is transferable and will enhance resale value and give more peace of mind to owners, UMWT says.

Once again, the Toyota Corolla Cross facelift is priced at RM133,800 for the 1.8V (down by RM3,600), RM140,800 for the 1.8 HEV (down by RM1,200) and RM148,800 for the 1.8 HEV GR Sport, which is up RM6,600 from the pre-facelift non-hybrid GR Sport.

By the way, the facelifted GR Sport – which looks very similar to the pre-facelift GR Sport – is not present at the KLIMS press day, but we’ve attached pics of the Thai-market car here.

Toyota Corolla Cross HEV Premium facelift at BIMS 2024

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has started taking orders for the new Toyota Corolla Cross facelift, which is estimated to be priced from RM140,000. On its official website, the company is teasing two variants, namely the Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric as well as the Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport. The latter would be new to our market, as the outgoing GR Sport variant wasn’t a hybrid.

Already on sale in Thailand, the refreshed Corolla Cross sports a new front end that features redesigned full-LED headlamps and a slimmer upper grille. The main grille just below also gets honeycomb perforations and blends in neatly into prominent faux intakes at the sides.

No shots of the interior for now, but it is confirmed that the antiquated foot-operated parking brake will be replaced with an electronic parking brake, which brings along with it an auto brake hold function. A larger 10.1-inch touchscreen head unit (previously a nine-inch system) is also touted and comes with support for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Other features highlighted by UMWT include a 3D panoramic view monitor (PVM) as well as an updated vehicle telematics system with remote engine start. The Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric will be available in five colours, including Celestite Grey Metallic, Red Mica Metallic, Silver Metallic, Platinum White Pearl and a new Dark Turquoise.

As for the GR Sport version, it gets three two-tone options – Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic and Dark Turquoise – all with a black roof. The new features of the non-GR Sport model are here too, but the sportier offering gets stiffer suspension and performance bracing for sharper cornering, complemented by a GR Sport interior that has black leather seats with embossed logos and red stitching.

Both variants come with an eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for the hybrid battery, inverter and power management control ECU, and customers will have the option to extend the coverage by an additional two years. This is on top of the standard five-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.

The company stopped short of mentioning if there are any powertrain changes, but based on what we’ve seen in Thailand, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is expected to maintain its 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated Dual VVT-i inline-four petrol and electric motor pairing for a total system output of 122 PS going to the front wheels.

Bangkok 2024: Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – HEV Premium, GR Sport; new front face, interior updates

For all the talk of Chinese brands invading the 2024 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), the lynchpin of the event is still the Japanese contingent, headed by Toyota and its facelifted Corolla Cross. The revised SUV was launched in the Land of Smiles last month, but this is its first public appearance.

Speaking of appearances, the visual changes are focused solely at the front of the car, where the large downturned grille – which gave the outgoing car a kind of bulldog-like look – has been replaced by a more subtle series of hexagonal perforations (in a similar fashion to the Lexus RX).

A slim reflective bar joins the headlights, which have been lifted from the Japanese- and European-market models and thus feature sequential indicators. Under these sit a pair of fake air intakes that make the Corolla Cross appear a bit more sporty. Aside from the front end, the only visible changes are new 17- and 18-inch alloy wheel options, as well as mildly revised taillights again lifted from the two aforementioned markets.

Bangkok 2024: Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – HEV Premium, GR Sport; new front face, interior updates

There are more updates on the inside, where the Corolla Cross sports a new, fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument display and a larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. There’s also a new Dark Red upholstery as you can see here.

But the biggest change is that the Corolla Cross finally ditches its antiquated foot-operated parking brake in favour of an electronic parking brake. This not only gives the car an auto brake hold function but also provides the adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go. Previously, the system would prompt you to step on the brakes, failing which the car would roll forward.

The ACC system is naturally part of the Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assists, which also includes autonomous emergency braking, lane centring assist and automatic high beam. This is reserved for the hybrid models, with the range-topping HEV Premium Luxury and GR Sport also gaining pedal misapplication control.

Bangkok 2024: Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – HEV Premium, GR Sport; new front face, interior updates

Toyota has left the mechanicals well alone, the base Corolla Cross continuing to be powered by a 140 PS/177 Nm 1.8 litre 2ZR-FBE flex-fuel Dual VVT-i engine and a CVT. The HEV Premium, HEV Premium Luxury and GR Sport utilise a 98 PS/142 Nm Atkinson-cycle VVT-i version paired to a 72 PS/163 Nm electric motor to deliver a total system output of 122 PS.

Prices in Thailand range from 999,000 baht (RM133,093) for the 1.8 Sport Plus, rising up to 1,094,000 baht (RM145,749) for the HEV Premium, 1,204,000 baht (RM160,404) for the HEV Premium Luxury and 1,254,000 baht (RM167,065) for the HEV GR Sport.

We’ve also prepared a gallery of the HEV GR Sport, which features the same bodykit, unique 18-inch alloys, clear taillights and interior accoutrements as before, paired with the new headlights and interior upgrades. What do you think of the facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross? Sound off in the comments below.

  • 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – 1.8L petrol, hybrid; digital dash, EPB, wireless CarPlay, Android Auto

2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift – 1.8L petrol, hybrid; digital dash, EPB, wireless CarPlay, Android Auto

The Toyota Corolla Cross facelift has made its debut, over three years since the original made its global premiere in Thailand.

Four variants comprised of one ICE version and three hybrids emerge at the facelift’s debut; 1.8L Sport Plus at 999,000 THB (RM133,093), HEV Premium at 1,094,000 THB (RM145,749), HEV Premium Luxury at 1,204,000 THB (RM160,404) and the HEV GR Sport at 1,254,000 THB (RM167,065).

Visual updates bring the popular Asean-market SUV closer to the Corolla Cross sold in other markets, and changes include redesigned full-LED headlamps as seen on the Japanese– and European-market models.

It’s unique elsewhere however, with the front fascia that now has a slimmer upper grille on top of honeycomb perforations – of a fashion akin to those on the Chery Omoda 5 or the Lexus RX – blended into the mid-section, atop intakes bookended by foglamps along the lower section.

The aforementioned new headlamp design from versions of the Corolla Cross sold in other markets bring sequential indicators, while further exterior equipment highlights include the panoramic sunroof and kick-sensing powered tailgate. Tail lamps are also LED units of a new design.

Rolling stock for the HEV Premium variant upwards is a set of 18-inch, two-tone finish alloy wheels shod with 225/50R18 tyres, while the GR Sport gets tyres of similar dimensions, on alloy wheels of a different design.

Building upon its TNGA base, the facelifted Corolla Cross continues to feature a 1.8 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in conventional ICE form, and also as part of a hybrid powertrain.

These continue to be the 2ZR-FBE 1.8 litre unit with 140 hp/177 Nm for the ICE version that is for the base 1.8 Sport Plus variant, and the 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre unit with 122 hp for the other three hybrid-powered variants comprised of 98 hp and 142 Nm from the Atkinson-cycle combustion engine and 72 hp/163 Nm from the electric drive motor.

For active safety kit, the base 1.8 Sport Plus variant gains blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), while the HEV Luxury variant get the Toyota Safety Sense suite of systems comprised of pre-collision AEB, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning, lane tracing assist and auto high beam. The HEV Premium Luxury and HEV GR Sport gain parking support brake functionality.

Further active safety equipment includes stability control, traction control, ABS, EBD, brake assist, hill start assist and tyre pressure monitoring, and passive safety kit in the form of seven airbags.

Interior kit upgrades for the facelift see the arrival of an electric parking brake in place of the pre-facelift’s foot-operated mechanical item, which also means the gain of automatic brake hold functionality. Here, driver instrumentation for the HEV Premium Luxury variant upwards get the 12.3-inch full-digital display, and all variants gain the 10.1-inch touchscreen unit that support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Upholstery for the Corolla Cross facelift is offered in black, or Dark Rose (red). Cabin lighting is now by LED throughout, and the top two variants get wireless device charging and the panoramic sunroof.

In Thailand, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross is available in Celestile Gray Metallic, Metal Stream Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black Mica with the addition of Cement Gray Metallic for its exterior colours, while the top HEV GR Sport variant gets the selection of Platinum White Pearl with black roof, Red Mica Metallic with black roof, and Attitude Black Mica.

  • 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift reveal in Thailand on Feb 8 – slimmer grille, headlights from JDM model

2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift reveal in Thailand on Feb 8 – slimmer grille, headlights from JDM model

The Toyota Corolla Cross is pretty popular in these parts, so any update is going to make us sit up and notice. Which is just as well, because the facelifted version of the SUV will be revealed in Thailand in just a few days time on February 8.

A few teasers have been released to accompany the announcement, and by far the most noticeable change is the adoption of the full-LED headlights from the Japanese- and European-market models. The eyebrow-style daytime running lights have been pushed down, giving space up top for the sequential indicators.

Now, you might expect this facelift to simply get the Japanese front end with its distinctive hexagonal upper grille and gaping lower grille (after all, the Corolla Cross Hybrid in the US also got this face), but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

2024 Toyota Corolla Cross facelift reveal in Thailand on Feb 8 – slimmer grille, headlights from JDM model

    Japanese-market Toyota Corolla Cross

In the brightened photo up top, you can see that the new, slimmer upper grille connects the headlights; that’s not the case on the JDM model. The side profile shown in the video below also shows that the bumper juts out further down, around the same position as the current ASEAN variant, hinting that it will be of a different design.

Expect the Corolla Cross to retain the same powertrain options – a 139 PS/172 Nm 2ZR-FE 1.8 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder mated to a CVT, as well as a hybrid model that pairs an Atkinson-cycle version of the engine with two electric motors and a nickel-metal hydride battery to produce a total system output of 122 PS.
