Proton Saga facelift unveiled at Thai Motor Expo 2010

Proton Saga facelift unveiled at Thai Motor Expo 2010

UPDATE: The Proton Saga FL has been launched in Malaysia! Click for details and pricing.

We’re here at the Thai Motor Expo 2010 for some pre-KLIMS motorshow action, where Proton has unveiled the 2011 Proton Saga facelift!

Here’s an initial list of changes from what we’re able to tell so far:

Proton Saga facelift unveiled at Thai Motor Expo 2010

The entire front end has pretty much changed from the head lamps, grille, bumper, and even the engine hood sheet metal design. The new engine hood now creases in a way that makes the left and right sides of the hood higher. There’s also a very faint spine in the middle of the hood, where in the pre-facelift Saga it was flat.

The headlamps now appear to use three bulbs instead of the previous two bulb config – we think this means there’s a dedicated bulb for high beam now. The signal lamps have been moved towards the inside of the lamps.

The wing mirrors now have turn signal indicators.

The rear end also has significant changes. The tail lamps are new and have LED lighting. There’s a small spoiler on the boot lid, and because of the spoiler design the Saga badge has to be relocated slightly to the left.

The bumper now has a black insert for the diffuser-like design feature, and it’s now wider with reflector lenses and shaped to show off the exhaust muffler and tail pipe, as opposed to the pre-FL Saga which had its rear end designed to hide the exhaust tail pipe.

The 1-DIN Clarion radio looks the same to us (except for the MP3/WMA logos which indicate support for those files), but there are new USB and AUX-in ports which are not integrated into the radio but are instead positioned to the lower right of the radio. This takes up some of the cubby hole space below the radio.

The steering wheel now has audio control buttons, similiar in style to the Satria Neo’s.

The fabric pattern on the door cards and the seats are now of a different design (old one is on the left). The baseline model in Thailand has a yet another different fabric pattern, and the one we are showing above in comparison to the old fabric is the high spec fabric pattern.

There are now rear power window button controls. As for which of the Malaysian car specs will feature rear power windows and which won’t, we’ll have to wait for the Malaysian launch.

There’s a new alloy wheel design, but the tyre size is the same as before – 185/60R14.

There’s now the option for a front passenger airbag which takes up the ’tissue box’ holder compartment in the pre-facelift Saga.

These are the only changes we are able to see so far, and we have to note that some of these updates like the USB/AUX function, the extra airbag and the rear power windows could only be for the higher spec models. Four colours are available in Thailand – Solid White, Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver and the new colour you see here which is Blue Rock.

There could be other changes on the mechanical side of things though, which we will probably only be able to find out when we speak to Proton’s engineers in Malaysia. The Thai spec sheet quotes 70kW and 120Nm, which is the same as the pre-facelift Saga.

Nice tweaks here and there, maintaining Saga design, but slightly unifying with the other models. I’m optimistic of things to come. Keep it up Proton!

Maybe it is time to have an ASEAN car. Where different ASEAN countries can contribute and share in the generated wealth. Each country would have their own expertise. This could have far reaching effects.

Kudos, love the new facelift. The new look is more aggressive and matured.

Love the front look, it’s more sporty and the three bulbs front lights are much better than the old ones. The back look is pretty much what the current trend looks is.

It’s good marketing that Proton did the launch outside the country to take advantage of the Thai Motor Expo 2010. Just think of the international exposure there.

Beside what’s good does it do to reveal to the local market first when it only end up being bashed…Now when Proton move the reveal outside the country also people make noise. It’s just a wise marketing strategy for Proton.

      Beside

that’s not a big deal , just mark your pendrive with a marker pen, so you know next time you know which side is up and whice side is down, small matter , why so difficult
even if you donlt do it just push the connector intothe port, if cannot go, the just change to the other side, no headache haih

I have seen the car in flesh. I find that the changes to the front end is spectacular. The headlights reminds me of the current generation of Honda City. Pictures don’t do it justice so please the actual car itself.

they put it as optional because in case of an accident where your car plunges into a lake or something, because power windows shorts out in water, and you’ll be locked in your car..

One thing l like about my good old iswara was the lever to move the front seat back and forth, located nicely at the side. I loved that, just reach out, pull and adjust the seat to suite my leg (me and my wife swapped our cars frequently). Newer proton model “hide” the lever underneath, little bit annoying, especially at night.

I don’t know, may be proton purposely did that for safety (to discourage people from moving the seat while driving).

    Mr. Paul, any comment?

Oddly, I preferred the old model.

If there is one thing proton really needs to fix in a facelift, is the steering wheel.

Doing up the touchy feely bits pays dividens in customer satisfaction. Something that Proton has yet to learn……especially the steering wheel/wheel hub, where the driver (and most likely the person that payed for the car) will touch and see everyday.

  • I am going to be labeled as a “basher” but who cares.

    1. Those of you who rate is as Nice/Good/About Time, try driving it first. Unless you do drive one, pictures make everything look nice. I own a pre-facelift so that says a lot.
    2. With no mechanical change, I can only say that this is one heavy machine being lugged around by a pathetic piece of engine called the “Campro”. The transmission is also hopeless and at times confused.
    3. You will get 12km/l for this car. But wait, that means you have to drive at 80km/h @ no more than 2600RPM and oh yah, make sure u turn off the compressor. Better yet, just listen to the road noise instead of the radio/CD (saves u a couple more kms).

This is just a personal experience with the car. I am not a basher, I am just giving the facts. I wish someone would’ve told me earlier when it was first launched. Don’t think I would regret driving a MyVi…………

I own the Pre-Facelift Saga. The radio/cd works fine, and no problem for Miley to sing her lungs out.

About the fuel consumption, if you are trying your hard to chase after Honda cars, then..that explains..sorry MZ~ but so far, travelling from USJ to KL..i have no problem fueling up my tank twice a week. or..maybe becoz i drive slow? haha~ either ways..i tink the fuel consumption ok la..for a national car. just give proton some time to improve. Honda already been in the industry 60+ years oledy..

          • Erm, again, I did mention I drive at a constant speed of 80kmph, so that would cancel the “chasing a honda” part. I also drive from USJ to KL, i put in about RM50 for around 340 km…

Plus, notice that I am just stating the facts that this is the FC of my Saga. But somehow, those “blind supporters” say i’m lying lah, compare to BM-la, compare to Altis-la, keep saying i drive fast la….

        Thanks buddy!

ps: in case u didnt understand my sarcasm,
        1. “you want to drive 130km/h and still maintain FC at 12km/l”
        > No, but it’s nice to know you agree with me that the Saga is a heavy machine
and you need 130km/h to drive it around AND maintain at 12km/l *rolls eyes*
        2. “you want a cheap car sounds insulator at par with bmw or audi?”
        > Again no, notice I didn’t make any comparison with higher range cars. Only u
        supporters from Bolehland compare to Vios-la, Peugeot-la, BM-la, civic-la,
altis-la. But if you drive around everyday in one u will hear it.
        3. “you want the performance of 1.3 campro better than 2.0 civic or altis?”
        > Er No, I didn’t say that. YOU did.

So, who is the moron/retard now? Brush up on your rhetoric before you come telling others that they are morons/retards.

You *will* regret driving a Myvi!! Do you think a Myvi’s NVH is good?? A Persona’s NVH is far far better than a Myvi’s, don’t even need to compare to foreign makes!

      • normal_user on Dec 01, 2010 at 10:06 am

Agree. Myvi’s NVH’s and comfort ride standard is nowhere near a Proton (Saga & Persona). And I can also safely say that even the smaller A-segment Picanto/Suria and Hyundai i10 has a lot better ride compared to Myvi based on driving experience with these small cars.

But the Myvi’s 1.3L engine is good in terms of power delivery & hill climbing, fragile in FC, and brisk too compared to Saga’s campro. That’s the only good thing about Myvi.

  • Proton is definitely going into the right direction to win back the msian people’s hearts (and wallets) as well as going regional. (thai, indo, etc). Now after all the looks and the aesthetics, comes the question of QUALITY. no point giving all the fancy schmancy add-ons if it breaks down easily. There are serious competition coming from the Koreans and its proven in the Msian market that consumers are willing to fork out more money for better quality cars. To all the proton bashers out there – have you all actually test drove the car before giving out your 0.5 cents opinion? We must be encouraged by the things proton is doing, and as smart consumers, we must be open to all aspects of car consumerism – even our own locally made brands. Opinions and feedback are most valuable if its constructive, not hollow and baseless – like 90% of the one line comments posted here.

Oh, and the 1st year, 2 things will happen:

      1. Your car will just magically die when u r cruising at 80 kmph. NO ONE in EON/Proton Edar will be able to tell you what’s wrong. They will tell you that all they did is to “recalibrate” your ECU. I don’t believe it one bit.
      2. Your power window SWITCH will fail ensuring you need to press the switch a few times until the dam thing works.

BTW, I am one of those who gave this a THUMBS UP.

I agree that there should be an ENGINE UPGRADE for Saga to survive stiffer competition. Not just cosmetic upgrade. The current 1.3 IAFM is quite sluggish, especially the auto. In fact not just Saga, the entire proton models (other than Inspira) are currently underpowered and need engine upgrade.

Better transmissions like 5-speed auto or AMT (like Savvy) is also overdue. Its time to move away from the obsolete 4 speed auto.

We may have commented the poor plastics, power windows and other minor minor issues. But will it be right that a price difference of RM40k plus the bunga in 7 years can buy you how many sets of this minor minor thing? Does a bit of improved NVH and smoothness in engine worth that amount of RM50K(bunga included)? Does a bit of saving in fuel consumption worth that amount of money? Remember to a lot of people, a brand new Saga BLM is a very precious thing already. You have computer with internet, I presume you are not one of them. Should we welcome improvements in BLM, even if it is just a little bit, for the sake of those with limited resources.
How sure are we that a non-BN will change the NAP once they get into Putrajaya?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
  • 1) Rear lamp – way too tiny and looks weird to match with saga huge bumper
    2) Front lamp – looks good from front but from the side i doubt so
    3) Front grille – colour combination not right. Apply chrome to top/bottom stripes will looks better
    4) The new rim design makes the rim looks even smaller even thought the size is the same.

      RM50 = 330~ 350km..

bad figure? dont care, just 50K (inc interest) so no much complaint :)

Outside… quite good. inspires confidence in quality..

Inside… whoever designed the interior should be called out, put in front of a firing squad and shot. You do not make cheap plastic look cheaper by implementing squarish and round designs.. with flow and injection moulds and various new plastic forming technologies, the interior designer could have done better!

Actually what is tapped at the fender? Maybe just to hide that the new facelift dont have fender signal due to the led signal at the side mirror.

Expecting a price increase with this type of improvement.

Quite nicely done for a facelift.

Of course, this isn’t a model change so cannot expect too much.

Launching it at Thailand better so that P1 can get good feedback for practical improvement.

At least they are waking up to the fact they need to boost exports quickly.
