2018 Mazda 6 teases new face, interior, turbo engine

It’s been five years since the third-generation Mazda 6 was unveiled, but it ain’t going anywhere just yet, with a second facelift set to be introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 30. Before that, Mazda has shown teaser images of the front and interior of the car, previewing the rather significant upgrades in store for the swoopy D-segment sedan.

Up front sits a revised fascia seemingly inspired by the new CX-5, with a new grille surround that flows under – rather than above – the headlights. Speaking of which, the light graphics have also been redesigned with new LED daytime running lights, while the bumper incorporates the slim “whiskers” from the CX-5. On top of that are a new 19-inch wheel design and what appears to be the new Soul Red Crystal paint.

Inside, the 6 gains a comprehensive interior update, including an all-new dashboard – the second it has received since 2012. The more horizontal instrument panel design features new climate controls and Japanese Sen Wood trim that sits on the same line as the thinner air vents. Elsewhere, Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) can now do stop-start traffic, and there’s also a new 360-degree monitor.

Even bigger changes can be found under the bonnet – the 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated SkyActiv-G engine now gets cylinder deactivation, and for the first time Mazda will also offer the turbocharged version from the CX-9. Output numbers have not been revealed just yet, but for the record, the forced induction mill produces 228 hp at 5,000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm in the big seven-seater SUV.

I think the current front grill looks sleeker. This one looks too Acura-ish

Kudos to Toyota Mazda team up.

  • overseas car forum mentioned the above as a facelifted 6 for upcoming LA motor show. it is a major disappointment if the above is gonna be the exact next gen of Atenza. There are only minor external cosmetic improvements. The new fitted turbo is a plus for performance upgrade while the interior is almost similar to current GVC model with nicer dash. So Bermaz gonna continues to push the car to 210 to 220k price tag? it will flop as the price positioning gap is too closed to double B’s and 4 Rings. Having owned 2 gen of 6’s since 2009 and with over 200k tags, I will wave sayonara Atenza

    • Don’t worry bermaz will ckd this like cx-5 & cx-9 and the price will be rm180k for the top spec.

Cylinder deactivation !! This use to be reserved for Premium German car but now in this Japanese Mazda-6. The best part is it also comes in Turbo too.

Looks like Mazda is taking the treat from a Korean GT seriously to upped the ant in the competitive D-segment.

    • Cylinder deactivation exist long ago in japanese engines. In the 90’s mitsubishi already has this tech which is more widely known as the mivec md which md means modular displacement.

What does it tell U when a system like this existed long ago in Mitsubishi BUT did not CONTINUE !! It mean companies like Cadillac, Alfa & Mitsubishi did not “perfected” the technologies. In short, it FAILED Big Time.

Although the attempts to use variable-displacement technology failed in the past, automakers have been able to overcome the problems that occurred using new advancements in computers. With computers this fast cylinder deactivation & reactivation occur almost instantly.

I sincerely hope the latest deactivation works as it will help to extract maximum power, consumption & emission out from the engine. Cheers…

  • The 2.5l Blown 4-pot probably adds an additional variant above the existing NA2.0l/2.5l to better compete with the 250hp+ D-segment Mid Size Sedan, things like the V6 Camry and 2.0l Turbo 4 Accord .Given that the competition from SUV, manufacturers are generally making their sedans focus more on sportiness and ’emotional appeal’ and with 250hp+ sedans whizzing about in the US (The Camry V6 has 307hp), It becomes a necessity to introduce a more powerful engines.

Remains to see if Honda and Mazda will offer these top end Turbo Accord and 6 in Malaysia, given that the Passat and Optima offered here are offered with very powerful engines in their classes. But lack of engine manufacturing locally in the region may hinder both cars to be, once again, out of reach to Malaysians ,the Accord Turbo 2.0l. If I am not mistaken is only produced in Ohio USA, and so is the 10-speed auto that comes with it, while the 2.5l Turbo, along with the CX-9, is only made in Mazda’s Hiroshima plant, CBUing them or their engines will push prices way above their current price range like how the V6 Accord was once sold here at BMW 330e money.

  • ….OMGx3….. as expected to be similar to the CX5 features. Other forums titled as face lifted 6. There were already 2 FL versions of 6 since 2013. The non GVC and GVC and now, this???? The external is identical to current while the dash portions looks more refined..Audi style interior. The turbo feature will be greater if the gearbox is also upgraded to >6 instead of current 6 spd. Having owned past 2 gen of 6s -2.0 and 2.5 since 2009, Bermaz only pushes the price tag above par and the removal of ACC features and even safety belts indicators are lame act! good luck with the next gen as the price will rocket towards 210-220 range. Such gaps will bring consumers towards the CKD double B’s and even the CBU 4 rings. Sayonara Atenza!

  • Bermaz dont make the same mistake with the current facelifted Mazda 6 where the 2.5 and 2.0 gets different faces and headlights yah.

And while we are at it, what about Apple Carplay/Android Auto?

Mazda Malaysia, please bring along the 2.2 Diesel Turbo. The best Diesel turbo at this moment in this class. Exceptionally quiet compared to other Diesel engine. (except for Porsche Macan, but it is in a different league)
