Proton sets record sales – 9,501 units sold in August; to absorb SST for all models in September 2018

Proton has reached a new high in terms of sales, selling 9,501 units of cars in August alone, the highest figure it has seen since July 2015 (36 months ago). This achievement marks the third successive month of improved sales for the national automaker, primarily driven by the ‘tax holiday‘ period. Sales grew by 18.5% from July (8,102 cars), and its estimated market share for August stands at 15.4%.

Contributing to the bulk of sales is none other than the Proton Saga, with 4,174 registrations, followed by the Proton Persona with 2,957 units sold. To maintain pace, Proton has revealed that it will absorb the Sales and Services Tax (SST, which could potentially raise prices by up to RM3,000) for all models registered in the month of September.

Proton CEO Abdul Rashid Musa said “on top of absorbing GST for all models in September, Proton will also be celebrating Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day this month by offering generous deals on selected models. Discounts range from RM500 to RM1,000 will be offered for the Saga, Iriz and Persona while the recently launched Proton Ertiga Xtra, featuring new seat covers and a new touchscreen head unit, will be offered with RM2,000 off the list price.”

Meanwhile, in anticipation of the new Proton SUV, a total of 96 existing Proton centres have been approved to upgrade to 3S or 4S outlets, with one of them committed to selling up to 2,000 cars a year, said Abdul Rashid. The targeted figure is 109 outlets by October this year.

This actually shows that the pricing for all proton cars were not right. And many Malaysians wanting to buy at a reduced price. They are not asking something like 10-15k but rather 2-3k less will do.

Proton sales management need to look into this.

Proton should focus more on Persona & Saga, diversified the model eg.: SE, or R3(?), or two different faces for base & top spec perhaps… they actually a good looking car, just need some refreshment after these years to stay relevent… the Preve should be reskinned (just like what Mitsu does to Lancer in Taiwan…) bcoz it was design to be super ordinary boring looking uninspiring soul-less car from the beginning, or atleast have a new dashboard design, instead of new color & bigger wheels as people dont really bother the inner changes if it still looks the same…

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 8 Thumb down 1
    • Preve is due for replacement soon (Binrui in 2 years?), so better not spend R&D money for short term model. Better if they update it with Suprima parts, slash variants to 2 (Mid & Hi line) and lower the price. This model wud have amortised the development cost alredi, so they can lower by Rm5~7k.

Once upon a time (~ 15 years ago), Proton’s monthly sales were consistently 5-digit figures. These days, 5-digit figures have become cause for celebration. Such is the situation.

So why then is Proton trying to making such a big fuss about their August sales figures ? Yes, 9,500 sales is good and all (and as expected thanks to the tax holiday), and I am happy for Proton… but I really do not understand what Proton is trying to prove by publishing these overly-positive and ‘cherry-picked’ (highlight only the good, ignore the bad) sales reports. And Proton has been doing this for months… I think it makes Proton look desperate, if anything. Do you see UMW or Tan Chong (i.e. the other sales laggards) making a big fuss when they have a good sales month ? Never.

    Like the Perodua ‘price reduction’ article today, I could say the same thing about Proton’s monthly sales announcements;

I do not like it when companies use spin-doctoring tactics. Weak minded people will fall for them, but anyone with a brain will see right through their deception. Just be honest to your customers. Tell it as it is, not what you THINK it is. We don’t want your opinion, we just want to know the truth. Okay ?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 10
    • I think the main news announcement is, P1 will be absorbing the SST difference lar, but so ngam the sales have been going up thanks to the tax holiday so perhaps they wanna share the “gud” news with the press and justify why they will continue with the fixed pricing for a while.

P1 isnt the 1st to announce this since Mazda too has done the same. So all same same lar, even P2 too. Just wait and see…

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1
  • Don’t simply said that Proton absorbed the sst, by costing if the 6% gst on local assembled cars’ components are full taken off the new selling prices will be definitely cheaper. No doubt about it.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
    • P1 does manufacture their cars so they kena 10% SST not 6%. But they probably got that back when they start pressuring their vendors to price down.
