  • 2025 Proton Saga MC3: pair of them spied on highway

Another day, another round of spyshots of the upcoming 2025 Proton Saga MC3 – this time thanks to reader J Phuah, who spotted a pair of them on a highway (like how a pair was recently spotted at a Coldplay concert). Nothing much we haven’t already seen before, although a frontal close-up clearly shows the Ethereal Bow and a concave grille.

Here’s what we know so far – the budget sedan is expected to get, for the first time, ADAS (though most likely a basic one), and possibly LED headlamps, to match the Perodua Bezza, which has had both since the 2020 facelift. There should also be a new engine – a non-turbo port-injected BHE15PFI version of the X50 facelift‘s four-cylinder engine.

It’s been a long time since the Saga had a 1.5 litre engine, and if it’s going to continue to be marketed as an A-segmenter, that’s a rather big engine for one. Outputs could be around 99-110 PS and 125-135 Nm, beating the Bezza’s 67-94 hp and 91-121 Nm (1.0 and 1.3 litre engines).

Expect also a revised exterior (new front and rear bumpers, head and tail lamps, grille and boot lid) and interior (perhaps a new dashboard, pill-shaped air vents, redesigned air-con switchgear and the X50’s three-spoke D-shaped steering wheel), although the platform can trace its origins to the 2008 Saga BLM. All will be revealed by the fourth quarter. Excited?

Here’s the upcoming new 2025 Proton Saga MC3 on test again, this time in Putrajaya, but there’s something different about the camouflaged mule. Yup, it’s that contraption mounted on the roof of the sedan, and we think it’s a LiDAR sensor for advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) calibration work.

Yes, the next Saga will finally get ADAS, although we’re guessing that it’ll be reserved for top variants, as per the latest X50 facelift and S70 sedan. By the way, this would be the first time that Proton is calibrating ADAS on its own, as previous models with driver assist features were all based on Geely models with existing tech and software.

Last month, Proton effectively confirmed that the new Saga will feature ADAS. Buried in its vendor collaboration press release were mentions of future products that will be launched starting this year, including the new AMA platform for entry-level vehicles.

Most notable was the seemingly innocuous partnership struck between China’s Imotion Automotive Technology and Proton’s long-term vendor Delloyd Technology, which would enable the former to help “accelerate the development and adoption of ADAS systems for the AMA01.” There’s one AMA-based model that will be launched this year and it’s the new Saga.

We’ll have to see if it’s the full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving package available on Proton’s costlier models, but that might be a bit of a stretch given the Saga’s budget positioning. But just having autonomous emergency braking alone would be a huge improvement over today’s Saga and put it on par with the Perodua Bezza, which has the option of AEB as part of the ASA 2.0 pack since 2020.

ADAS aside, the new Saga will feature a heavily revised exterior design based on the outgoing Saga, itself tracing its lineage back to the 2008 ‘BLM’ model. Leaked internal images purportedly show the new Saga with projector headlights, a full-width grille with an Ethereal Bow chrome bar and a new bumper design.

Inside, the changes are even more stark, with an all-new dashboard housing a widescreen display panel with instrument and infotainment screens, pill-shaped air vents and redesigned air-con switchgear. There’s also a new three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel lifted from the X50.

Speaking of the X50, we’re expecting the new Saga to feature a naturally-aspirated version of the new 1.5 litre i-GT TD turbo-four in the X50 facelift. Models like the X70 and S70 could take on the new BHE15TD engine wholesale down the line, but the Saga needs a cost-effective version of the engine, and such a mill does exist in the Aurobay (Geely’s Sweden-based powertrain division, now part of Horse Powertrain) catalogue.

Of the two NA members of the engine family, the BHE15PFI is a ‘low-cost’ unit with port injection, and it looks to be a suitable engine for the Saga. Outputs of the DOHC VVT unit are rated at between 99 PS and 110 PS at 6,000 rpm and between 125 Nm and 135 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm – more on this here. The new AMA-based Saga will be launching later this year.

  • Proton Saga MC3 – new boot line for upcoming sedan?

Proton Saga MC3 – new boot line for upcoming sedan?

A spy image of the Proton Saga MC3 has surfaced once again, this time by Muhammad Shamim as posted to the paultan.org Automotive/Car discussion Facebook group.

This image of the national carmaker’s upcoming model appears to show that Proton has reworked the bootline of the sedan, here appearing to be longer than on the cars from previous sightings.

While prior spy images have not really offered an identical viewing angle such as this one, it would appear that the way the C-pillar meets the bootline is now less tapered, and wears a more pronounced kink for a more defined three-box shape, at least relative to the development car sighted in January.

Proton Saga MC3 – new boot line for upcoming sedan?

Proton Saga MC3 test mule, January 2025 sighting

From earlier spy images, concealment of the headlamps on the development car in April suggested that there will be major changes in this area, possibly to become the first Saga to be specified with LED headlamps. These will come as part of a comprehensive update along with a new front bumper, a larger grille, reshaped headlamps, a re-profiled bonnet, new tail lamps and a new boot lid.

The Saga MC3 has also been confirmed to get a suite of ADAS functions, as revealed through a partnership announcement between China’s Imotion Automotive Technology and Proton’s long-term vendor Delloyd Technology that is to “accelerate the development and adoption of ADAS [advanced driver assistance] systems for the AMA01.”

A new engine is in order for the Saga MC3, too, as the brand’s entry-level sedan could receive a new, all-aluminium unit from Geely’s powertrain division Aurobay, which is a close relation of the 1.5 litre turbocharged, direct-injection mill in the facelifted Proton X50.

    Render by Theophilus Chin

By far the biggest new feature on the facelifted Proton X50 is its 1.5 litre i-GT TD (turbo direct injection, not turbodiesel) four-cylinder engine. Offering a significant torque increase over the old GEP3 TGDi three-cylinder, the new BHE15TD mill is set to be the template for all Proton engines moving forward.

We anticipate that future versions of the X70 and S70 will receive the new engine wholesale, but of bigger consequence is the new Saga MC3 set to be launched later this year. A turbocharged and direct-injected engine would be complete overkill on such a budget-oriented sedan and would likely overwhelm the AMA-based chassis (although it would make for quite a hilarious souped-up model, don’t you think?).

What that car needs is a more cost-effective version of the engine, and thankfully such a mill does exist. A gander through the Aurobay (Geely’s Sweden-based powertrain division, now part of Horse Powertrain) website reveals a page for the BHE15 family with some intriguing variants. Two of them are naturally aspirated, these being the BHE15D and the BHE15PFI.

The BHE15D four-pot uses a 350-bar high-pressure direct-injection system and is found in the updated Geely Emgrand (the S70’s twin) in China, producing 126 PS at 6,300 rpm and 152 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm.

Proton Saga MC3 to get new 1.5L NA 4-cyl from X50 FL? BHE15PFI with 110 PS/135 Nm, timing chain

The all-aluminium engine maintains the BHE15TD’s 1,499 cc capacity – with an identical 73.4 mm bore and 88.57 mm stroke – but has a slightly higher 6,350 rpm redline (up from the TD’s 6,000 rpm) owing to the natural aspiration. And while it was not specifically listed on the website, the one-piece cam cover and the mention of a “silence chain” leads us to believe that the new mill will use a timing chain, not a belt, which will be music to the ears of many.

As fun as it would be to have a GDI engine in a Saga, such a fuelling setup would be expensive for an entry-level model and more complicated to service. It’s also described as a “high-performance engine” (although we would be hard-pressed to call the Emgrand a performance car), so perhaps it would be better suited to an R3 model down the line.

This is where the BHE15PFI comes in – a “low-cost” unit with port injection (still with DOHC and variable valve timing, mind) that is able to “meet different customer’s requirements” and would thus make for an ideal replacement for the old CamPro-based 1.3 litre VVT. Outputs are rated at between 99 PS and 110 PS at 6,000 rpm and between 125 Nm and 135 Nm of torque from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm, which even at the higher end is some way short of the Emgrand’s.

Still, the new mill will be at least slightly more powerful than the outgoing Saga, which makes 95 PS and 120 Nm. More importantly, the newer technologies embedded into the engine should provide a useful improvement in fuel consumption and emissions, the latter helping the car pass stricter Euro 6e regulations. Aside from the standard pure combustion configuration, the engine can be combined with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid system and can even be used as a range extender for an EV, it is stated.

Proton Saga MC3 to get new 1.5L NA 4-cyl from X50 FL? BHE15PFI with 110 PS/135 Nm, timing chain

The only other question concerns the gearbox that will be mated to this engine. The Saga currently uses an Aisin-sourced four-speed automatic, which may be considered a little antiquated in this day and age. Again, we could look to the aforementioned Emgrand, which is available with two transmission options – a CVT with eight virtual ratios in China and a six-speed auto (likely also Aisin-sourced) for exports.

Which one will the Saga use? A return to a CVT would match up well with Perodua’s models, which have graduated to a stepless transmission (we assume the next Bezza will, too). However, a six-speed auto would provide Proton with a point of difference and would also be more in tune with Malaysian tastes.

If Proton does go the CVT route again, the Emgrand’s newer unit (derived from Zhejiang’s WLY, which also supplies Chery) should be much smoother than the Punch CVTs from older Protons. Fun fact – past Emgrand models have also utilised a Punch VT2 CVT, meaning Proton and Geely have some commonality here. Which route would you go for – CVT or auto?

Aside from the new engine, the Saga MC3 is also expected to inherit some major exterior tweaks and an all-new dashboard, replete with a widescreen display panel incorporating new instrument and infotainment screens. Some advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are also confirmed to appear on the car.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 confirmed to get ADAS – new exterior and interior also on, plus huge tech upgrade

    Render by Theophilus Chin

Buried in Proton’s vendor collaboration press release yesterday were mentions of future products that will be launched starting this year, including the national carmaker’s new AMA platform for entry-level vehicles.

Most notable was the seemingly innocuous partnership struck between China’s Imotion Automotive Technology and Proton’s long-term vendor Delloyd Technology, which would enable the former to help “accelerate the development and adoption of ADAS [advanced driver assistance] systems for the AMA01.” In actual fact, the news is hugely significant because there is one AMA-based model that will be launching this year – the new Proton Saga.

This in itself is not a massive surprise – after all, we’ve seen several camouflaged prototypes fitted with an ADAS camera at the top of the windscreen. But this tacit admission from the company itself is still big news and means that prospective customers can look forward to driver assistance systems finally coming to the budget sedan this year.

    Render by Theophilus Chin

It remains to be seen whether the Saga will get the full suite of features that we’ve come to expect from larger and more expensive Protons. Given the car’s remit of providing the most bang for your buck, full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving systems such as adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist are probably a bridge too far, as they generally require higher-definition cameras and a front radar, both of which add cost.

That’s no big loss – just adding autonomous emergency braking alone would be a huge improvement over the outgoing model and put it on par with its biggest rival, the Perodua Bezza. We should point out, however, that there are cars out there, such as the Honda Civic, that provide Level 2 semi-autonomy using a purely camera-based system, so we can’t rule those features out just yet.

We’ll also have to wait to find out whether Proton will offer some or all of these features as standard (unlikely, again due to cost) and if it has addressed the Saga’s other safety issue – just two airbags across the range. Hopefully, the redesign has allowed the fitment of at least six airbags, which would give the car an edge over the aforementioned Bezza.

Spyshots from January already showed the ADAS camera and new displays

The new safety systems will join a heavily revised exterior design, still based on the outgoing Saga – itself tracing its lineage back to the 2008 “BLM” model. Leaked internal images purportedly show the new car with projector headlights, a full-width grille with the Ethereal Bow chrome bar and a new bumper design.

Inside, the changes are even more stark, with an all-new dashboard housing a widescreen display panel with instrument and infotainment screens, pill-shaped air vents and redesigned air-con switchgear. There’s also a new three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel lifted from the X50.

As for what’s under the bonnet, the Saga could be the recipient of a new Geely-sourced engine, perhaps related to the new 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine rumoured for the facelifted X50. We’ll find out for sure when the car launches in the fourth quarter of the year.

  • 2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted with headlamps almost fully covered – LED headlamps for first time on Saga?

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted with headlamps almost fully covered – LED headlamps for first time on Saga?

Another day, another couple of spyshots of the upcoming 2025 Proton Saga MC3 – this time thanks to Syafiq Ismail and Ye Chung Low on the paultan.org Automotive/Car discussion Facebook group. This is the first time we’re seeing the car with its headlamps almost fully covered, suggesting changes in that department.

Could the MC3 be the first Saga to wear LED headlamps? Even if this is true, we’ve spotted examples before with halogen reflectors, so it’s possible that the LED headlamps may be reserved for the top variant(s). The Saga’s main rival, the Perodua Bezza, has had LED headlamps since its 2020 facelift, and they’re standard across the range.

‘MC’ may stand for ‘minor change‘ in the Proton dictionary; however, the Saga MC3 is anything but. The front and back are expected to be completely new, incorporating a new front bumper, a larger grille, reshaped headlamps, a re-profiled bonnet, new tail lamps and a new boot lid. The interior could also be redesigned to include freestanding displays.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted with headlamps almost fully covered – LED headlamps for first time on Saga?

One big change is the long-awaited inclusion of driver assists, as the windscreen camera on the test mules indicate. The Saga has long lagged behind the Bezza in this regard, which has had autonomous emergency braking, front departure alert and pedal misapplication control since 2020.

An upgrade in the number of airbags (currently just two) would also be welcomed. However, since the car’s AMA platform is basically a warmed-over version of the 2016 Saga – itself a heavily-revised 2008 BLM – we wouldn’t hold our breath for it.

No word yet on what will power the car; will it use the same 1.3 litre VVT engine as before or adopt a Geely-sourced mill? We should know in the next few months – Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah has said that a number of new models will be launched in the second quarter.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

Proton is understandably patting itself on the back after reporting strong sales last month, but it’s also looking to the future. Buried in yesterday’s press release was a hint that new models are just on the horizon, with launches expected over the coming quarter.

“Looking ahead towards Q2 in 2025, we predict a continued number of new models being launched that will deliver a bevy of attractive deals, but Proton remains confident our dealership network and commitment to Malaysian car buyers will deliver the best long term ownership experience to our customers,” said Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah.

The national carmaker is obviously keeping mum on exactly what it will be launching, but the phrase “continued number” is key. Last year, the company launched two new models, the mildly-refreshed X50 RC and the facelifted X70, so expect the same number of cars to be introduced this year.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

As it happens, we already have a good idea of what’s to come. The big news is the new Saga, which is set to receive its third minor change (MC3) facelift – and this time, it’s a major one. Maintaining the same basic shape, proportions and structure as before, the budget sedan will nevertheless get entirely new front and rear fascias, although copious amounts of camouflage and placeholder lights and grille on the prototypes have obscured the changes.

From what we can tell, the car will be fitted with a new front bumper, a larger grille, reshaped headlights (likely available with LED lighting, matching its main rival, the Perodua Bezza) and a re-profiled bonnet to accommodate all the changes. Meanwhile, the rear end looks to gain new taillights and boot lid that should give the car some familial resemblance to the larger S70. The interior also appears to be mostly redesigned with new freestanding displays.

One big change is the long-awaited inclusion of driver assists, as the windscreen camera on the test mules indicate. The Saga has long lagged behind the Bezza in this regard, which has had autonomous emergency braking, front departure alert and pedal misapplication control since 2020.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

An upgrade in the number of airbags (currently just two) would also be welcomed. However, since the car’s AMA platform is basically a warmed-over version of the 2016 Saga – itself a heavily-revised 2008 BLM – we wouldn’t hold our breath for it. No word on what will power the car; will it use the same 1.3 litre VVT enigne as before or adopt a Geely-sourced mill? We’ll have to wait and see.

Less of a mystery is the facelifted X50, which will come just one year after the running change (RC) stopgap measure. Whereas that car looked virtually identical to the original, the new model will have a vastly different design derived from the latest Geely Binyue L in China.

New LED reflector headlights with S70-style “three-dash” daytime running lights will join a reshaped upper grille and a toothy full-width lower grille, while the rear end is set to get full-width taillights, a new tailgate – pushing the number plate recess into the bumper – and L-shaped bumper corners. One change over the Binyue L is an outlandish Batmobile-style rear wing from the older Binyue Cool, which looks set to be fitted to the top-spec variant.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

It’s not visible in the spyshots, but the X50 should also receive a completely revised cabin. The Binyue L has a more modern dashboard incorporating new air-con vents, toggle switches for the climate controls and a revamped centre console with twin grab handles, configurable storage and a thin translucent gear selector.

The tech is entirely new as well, the Binyue L gaining the latest Flyme Auto infotainment system that made its Malaysian debut on the electric eMas 7. This runs the 8.8-inch slimline instrument display and the 14.6-inch centre touchscreen, both upgrades over the existing X50’s seven- and 10.25-inch displays respectively.

We should point out, however, that the X50 may not necessarily follow the Binyue L in getting the all-new interior. Last year’s facelifted X70 got a bespoke cabin design that was different from both the Geely Boyue Pro/Azkarra and the 2022 Boyue facelift, incorporating a larger “floating” 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and 64-colour ambient lighting, among other things.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

Last but certainly not least are the mechanicals. The X50 has hitherto soldiered on with the same 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine since its October 2020 launch, but the facelift could see a switch to Geely’s latest four-cylinder unit, used since the Binyue Cool. In the L, the mill produces 180 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm.

This is 3 PS and 35 Nm up on even the highest-spec direct-injected TGDI version of the existing GEP3 engine, enabling the Binyue L to sprint from zero to 100 km/h three tenths of a second quicker at 7.6 seconds. No matter which engine the MC comes with, it will be mated to the usual seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

Proton launching a “number of” new models in Q2 2025 – Saga MC3 and X50 facelift coming soon?

The Geely Star Wish is set to be sold as the eMas 5 in Malaysia this year

We’re hopeful that the X50’s driver assist package, which looks to have been updated judging by the new windscreen camera module on the prototypes, will be expanded to more models and not limited to the most expensive Flagship variant. That’s because one of the mules without the aforementioned rear wing was seen with the camera, hinting at the democratisation of the tech.

Aside from the core Proton brand, the eMas range of electric vehicles is also set to be expanded later this year with a smaller, more affordable sibling to the eMas 7. It’s tipped to be badged as the eMas 5 and should take the form of the Geely Star Wish, known as the Xingyuan in its home market of China. Roslan has already been reported as saying we can expect an announcement on the said car soon.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 seen again – to debut soon?

The upcoming Proton Saga MC3 facelift has been sighted road-testing once again, this time on the Federal Highway, sighted courtesy of King Wong on the paultan.org Automotive/Car discussion group on Facebook.

Where the last sighting of the upcoming model depicted the rear view of the vehicle, the national carmaker’s entry-level sedan once again shows its front as well, though this time there appears to be less camouflage on its grille, revealing more of its mesh pattern. Here, we can also see the ADAS camera that was sighted earlier this year.

It remains to be seen if this is indeed the new, AMA-based Saga that is set to debut this year, which is likely as the current model is now nine years old, with two facelifts – 2019 and 2022 – having emerged since the debut of the P2-13A third-generation model.

The upcoming model that’s being tested appears to wear panels and an overall shape similar to that of the current model, though it remains to be seen if this is just a disguise. Whether it will use a Proton or Geely engine is still not known.

Last month, the upcoming Saga MC3 was also sighted on test with a third-generation Perodua Myvi facelift, suggesting there could be benchmarking underway. Although the Saga and the Myvi are of different vehicle segments, comparison parameters could include the Myvi’s ADAS, refinement, packaging, performance and efficiency.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted again, is it AMA-based?

Another day, another sighting of the upcoming 2025 Proton Saga MC3, but this time we have a very clear rear view – the tail lamp shapes are definitely new, suggesting an update bigger than a minor change.

Proton has confirmed that we’ll get a new AMA-based Saga this year, and this could be it. It’s rumoured to carry the internal code P2-14A or AMA01. The current P2-13A third-gen Saga is already nine years old and has been facelifted twice (2019 and 2022).

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted again, is it AMA-based?

The test mule’s body panels and overall shape are similar to the current Saga, though – we hope that this is merely a disguise and the production car will have new body panels, or it wouldn’t be so AMA-zing. Whether it will have a Proton or Geely engine is still unknown.

The car was recently spotted together with a trade-plated third-gen facelift Perodua Myvi, sparking talk of benchmarking. While the two cars belong to different segments, possible comparison parameters are the Myvi’s ADAS, refinement, packaging, performance and efficiency.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted benchmarking Myvi?

The 2025 Proton Saga MC3 has been spotted a few times before, but this time, Amirul Syafiq saw it together with a trade-plated third-gen facelift Perodua Myvi – is Proton benchmarking the upcoming Saga against the Myvi? Had they used a Myvi with normal plates, no one would be the wiser!

Conventional wisdom dictates that the Saga is an A-segment car and the Myvi a B, so perhaps Proton’s engineers are aiming for B-segment refinement levels for their budget sedan. Other parameters such as the Myvi’s packaging, performance and efficiency are also possible.

Or it could be ADAS benchmarking – the Saga MC3 does after all have an ADAS camera at the top of the windscreen. We can also see halogen headlamps and a new ‘winged’ grille, but the back looks quite new, with new lines that suggest changes to the boot, tail lamps and bumper.

Proton has confirmed that we’ll get a new AMA-based Saga this year – is this it? Earlier spyshots show side panels that are the same as the current car, so we hope that this is merely a disguise and the production car will have new body panels. Whether it will have a Proton or Geely engine is still unknown.

Proton confirms at least 3 new model launches for 2025 – AMA Saga, GMA eMas 5, X50 facelift and more?

Proton confirmed at last night’s Chinese New Year media dinner that it will be launching at least three new models in 2025, as you can see in the slide above.

AMA definitely refers to the next-gen Saga, the test mule of which was recently spotted with an ADAS camera but cloaked in the old body. We do hope this old body is a disguise and that the production car will have new body panels – fingers crossed. Whether it will have a Proton or Geely engine is still unknown.

On GMA, Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong mentioned “at least one new model”, and he specifically said either the eMas 5 or eMas 3, confirming that Proton has plans for both. Another possible model is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the eMas 7 (see Geely Galaxy Starship 7).

It’s also at least one new model for the X/S series. We’ve already seen the X50 facelift on test, which is likely to debut a new 1.5 litre turbo four-cylinder engine. That should be the confirmed model, while the ‘+’ could refer to another X model receiving said new four-potter. Could that be the X90, which is currently the oldest in the range?

2025 Proton Saga MC3 facelift rendered – all-new S70-like front fascia, projector headlights, coming soon?

Last weekend, we saw images and a video of the facelifted Proton Saga right opposite the Centre of Excellence headquarters, showing a major overhaul for the budget sedan. Now, rendering wizard Theophilus Chin has sought to remove the camouflage of this much-anticipated MC3 version, giving us some idea of what it might look like.

The prototype certainly hinted at a very extensive makeover – something that’s reflected in the render, showing an all-new front clip. The heavily-resculpted bonnet and the new grille with its horizontal slat was visible in the video, while the new bumper with T-shaped corner air inlets was adapted from the larger Geely-derived S70.

Theo’s choice for the headlights, however, was a bit controversial. The prototype was equipped with placeholder round lamps, meaning that completely new clusters are almost certainly on the cards. Theo went aggressive on the render by giving the trailing edge a forwards rake, not unlike the Saga FL – the first facelift for the Base Line Model (BLM) Saga – from 2010.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 facelift rendered – all-new S70-like front fascia, projector headlights, coming soon?

The result is a clunky look that is at odds with the organic design of the current Saga. The internals with their LED projectors, meanwhile, were again lifted from the S70; expect the real deal to have reflector units instead – similar to the 2022 Iriz and Persona facelifts – given the car’s budget bent.

No images of the interior have been shown, but the Saga MC3 is set to gain an even more extensive interior makeover – the prototype looked to have a freestanding instrument display instead of the usual hooded binnacle. Beyond the redesign, the car should finally receive driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking, given that a windscreen-mounted camera was spotted on the test mule.

Other details remain shrouded in secrecy. For one, we still don’t know whether the MC3 will soldier on with the same 1.3 litre VVT engine as before or utilise a Geely-sourced mill. It is also unclear whether this MC3 is a stop-gap facelift before an all-new model – based on a new AMA (likely standing for A-segment Modular Architecture) platform – debuts, or if this is the purported AMA-based model. The latter would be very disappointing considering it still uses much of the current long-in-the-tooth Saga.

2025 Proton Saga MC3 spotted with ADAS camera

Here we have yet another early look at the 2025 Proton Saga MC3, courtesy of Johnny Tan. The spyshot, taken at a petrol station opposite Proton’s headquarters in Shah Alam, shows a fully camouflaged mule with makeshift headlights, a new front grille and most importantly, an ADAS camera behind the windscreen.

For now, it’s unclear if this MC3 update will be a stop-gap facelift for the long-running model before the proper next-generation version arrives, or if this is indeed the purported AMA-based new Saga. What’s clear is that the body looks identical to the current car, it would be unlikely – not to mention disappointing – if this is the actual “all-new” model.

Beyond what we can see here, everything else would be pure speculation. Whether it will carry on Proton’s own VVT engine or any form of a Geely powertrain, we don’t yet know. It’s certainly exciting times ahead for Proton, with this one the horizon as well as its second EV model that has already been confirmed for this year.

So folks, what do you think this is: a late facelift for the current Saga, or the all new model? Discuss below.

Proton Saga MC3 spotted – base sedan to get another facelift before all-new, AMA-based model arrives?

The third-generation Proton Saga was first launched in Malaysia on September 28, 2016 and has been given a few updates since its debut. In August 2019, the A-segment received a facelift that not only saw styling changes but also a switch from a CVT to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Several years later in May 2022, the MC2 facelift (MC standing for ‘minor change’) was introduced with equipment revisions aimed at keeping the Saga competitive. In June 2023, Saga MC2’s got a new four-speed transmission sourced from Aisin instead of Hyundai and has remained same ever since.

Expecting the Saga to have a new generation is only natural given the current model’s long run and nameplate’s popularity, and we got a hint of what’s next for the Saga in February 2024. Proton CEO Li Chunrong confirmed that the company would set up a new R&D centre in Hangzhou, China specifically for the development of the brand’s homegrown models, which include the Saga, Persona and Iriz.

The rumour mill started to spin from there, with a supposed leak of the next-generation Saga surfacing only to be proven to be renders that aren’t genuine. Now, paultan.org reader Azahar Jalil has posted images of what is supposedly the new Saga spotted on trailer near the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.

Proton Saga MC3 spotted – base sedan to get another facelift before all-new, AMA-based model arrives?

At first glance, the body shape of the camouflaged car indicates this isn’t an all-new Saga but possibly another update (called the MC3 presumably) to tide things over until the redesigned model arrives. However, the company has already confirmed previously that a next-generation model is due this year, so what’s the deal here?

If Proton is indeed working on a new facelift for the current Saga, there is a chance that the company may be planning to sell the two Sagas alongside each other. The MC3 would form the base offering(s), with the newer, more advanced AMA-based model priced slightly higher. Official details of the AMA platform used for the all-new Saga are limited, but we understand it will be development of the same base used for the current Saga, which itself can be traced to the second-generation Saga BLM that debuted in 2008.

Perodua is an example of a car brand that offers two generations of the same model at the same time, as it currently sells two distinctly different Axia models (one based on the 2014 original, and one a proper second-generation version).
