    2024 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ revealed – W214 PHEV with up to 612 PS, 101 km electric range

It’s been nearly a full year since the W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was revealed, but Stuttgart has finally pulled the covers off the first AMG-badged model. This is the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+, a plug-in hybrid model that offers up a serious boost in firepower.

Much of that comes from the proven 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six that on its own produces 14 PS and 40 Nm of torque more than the previous E53. Thanks to higher boost, a retuned ECU and increased cooling, outputs are rated at 449 PS from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm and 560 Nm between 2,200 and 6,100 rpm. But that’s not all, of course, because the puny 48-volt mild hybrid system of old has been jettisoned in favour of a much more powerful electric motor.

This motor, still sandwiched between the engine and the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G nine-speed automatic gearbox, pushes out 163 PS and 480 Nm. Put all that together and you get 585 PS and 750 Nm of torque, and if you enable the Race Start launch control feature (only available with the AMG Dynamic Package), power is boosted to a stratospheric 612 PS – the same as the outgoing E63.

Equipped with the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, the E53 sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds (4.0 seconds without Race Start). Buyers of the AMG Driver’s Package get the electronic limiter bumped up to a 280 km/h top speed.

Unlike the latest four-cylinder C63 S E Performance, the E53 has a comparatively large 28.6 kWh battery (21.22 kWh usable, as part of the battery’s capacity is reserved to provide ample electric boost), delivering a pure electric range of between 93 and 101 km on the WLTP cycle. Fuel consumption is rated at a relatively low 8.6 to 9.2 litres per 100 km.

Under the skin, the E53 rides on steel springs and AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers; the suspension has been better insulated to make it more quiet when the car’s in all-electric mode. As per the CLE53, the front wheel arches have been stretched by 11 mm on either side to fit a wider front track – something previously reserved for the full-fat “63” models.

Elsewhere, the rear axle mounts have been made stiffer, while the chassis electronics, steering and stability control have been retuned for a sportier driving experience. You also get additional bracing on the strut towers, under the engine and on the rear axle, plus standard rear-wheel steering that goes up to 2.5 degrees.

The W214 E-Class’ slightly bulbous design has been sharpened up with the usual AMG aesthetic enhancements, such as the Panamericana grille, A-wing design front bumper, front fender gills, deeper side skirts, a boot lid spoiler and a large rear diffuser with quad (thankfully real, not always a given on a Mercedes these days) round exhausts.

As standard, the E53 comes with an illuminated grille and 19-inch alloy wheels, although 20- and 21-inch rollers are also available as an option. These hide sizeable brake discs that measure 370 mm at the front and 360 mm at the rear, clamped by four-piston front and single-piston rear callipers; they’re connected to an electromechanical brake booster that blends regenerative and friction braking.

Inside, the E-Class’ tech-heavy interior is embellished with an AMG Performance flat-bottomed steering wheel with AMG-specific rotary controls, power-adjustable AMG sports seats (AMG Performance buckets optional) and Artico faux leather and Microcut suede upholstery. You can, of course, spec the E53 with the MBUX Superscreen, consisting of 12.3-inch instrument and passenger screens and a 14.4-inch centre touchscreen. There are also unique AMG menus, including for the optional AMG Track Pace lap timer.

For a bit more money, you can purchase the AMG Dynamic Plus package that adds dynamic engine mounts, electronic locking rear differential, composite front brakes (390 mm discs, six-piston callipers) and the aforementioned Race Start feature, plus Microcut grips on the steering wheel.

Customers who order the car within the first year of production can also opt for the Edition 1 model, which adds Manufaktur Alpine Grey or matte Opalite White Magno paint, 21-inch AMG black forged alloys with a machined rim, “Edition” hub caps, the AMG Exterior Night Package I and II and matching black brake callipers.

Also fitted are carbon fibre door mirror caps and rear spoiler, AMG silver chrome fuel filler cap, black Nappa leather upholstery, yellow contrast stitching, yellow illuminated AMG side sill plates and lots of Edition 1 badges. The MBUX Superscreen and Edition 1 indoor car cover also come as standard.

    Both the diesel E 300 de and petrol E 400 e 4Matic incorporate a 129 PS/440 Nm electric drive motor, drawing energy from a 25.4 kWh battery (19.5 kWh usable). The E 400 e 4Matic does 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Suspension for the W214-generation E-Class is by a four-arm multi-link setup in front and a five-link layout at the rear, with Agility Control steel-sprung suspension and adjustable damping as standard on the mild-hybrid variants, and ride height is 15 mm lower than on the PHEVs.

Air suspension is optional as part of the Technology pack, bringing Airmatic with ADS+ continuously variable damping. Rear-axle steering is also optional, yielding up to 4.5 degrees of rear-wheel steer to reduce the car’s turning circle by 90 cm.

Inside, the Superscreen infotainment display takes centrestage in the W214 E-Class cabin, incorporating selfie and video camera atop the dashboard with an entertainment suite bringing a variety of third-party applications. Active Ambient Lighting coordinates lighting sequences with the music played through the audio system.

For driver assistance systems, the W214 E-Class includes Active Distance Assist, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package with reverse camera and Speed Limit Assist.

Optionally available is Driving Assistance Plus, which adds Active Steering Assist as a lane-keeping function. In the W214, when lane markings are no longer clearly visible and Active Steering Assist is no longer available, the system will alert the driver by vibrating the steering wheel.

The W214-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class goes on sale in Europe in the northern hemisphere summer of 2023, and the first batch of customer units are expected to arrive in showrooms in Europe in autumn.

W214 E-Class – this is what the standard dashboard looks like without the Superscreen option

    W214 Standard MBUX Screen

When the Mercedes-Benz W214 E-Class was unveiled, we had a look at the new ‘Superscreen’ option, which is basically similiar to the concept of the EQS Hyperscreen but scaled down for implementation on the E-Class. But the Superscreen, which includes a front passenger screen as well as a selfie camera, is optional, so what does the E-Class interior look like without the Superscreen?

Well, we have the answer now in a photo posted by Mercedes-Benz on their Instagram account. The standard MBUX screen basically looks like a tablet stock onto the dashboard’s wooden panel, which in this particular car has a pinstripe design. The fancy ambient lighting still looks to be there, which means it is a separate option from the Superscreen.

As mentioned, the MBUX Superscreen when specified includes a selfie and video camera mounted atop the dashboard, and packs an entertainment suite with a host of third-party applications. Available from launch in Europe are TikTok, the Angry Birds game, Webex, Zoom as well as the Vivaldi browser.

While the front passenger can watch dynamic content on a dedicated front passenger screen, the driver will be blocked from viewing the content on the front passenger display to avoid screen-based distraction.

Fancy a light show to go with your music? Active Ambient Lighting coordinates frequencies in colour tones and brightness, and is beat-synchronous with “practically no time lag,” says Mercedes-Benz.

    2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W214 – mild-hybrids, PHEVs up to 115 km EV range; MBUX Superscreen

The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has made its debut, bringing the Stuttgart marque’s mid-sized sedan entry into its 10th generation and thus sustaining one of its most traditional models in light of proliferating SUVs and dedicated electric vehicle model ranges.

Codenamed W214, this succeeds the W213 that made its debut in 2016 and the new car now measures 4,949 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,468 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm, this figure having grown 20 mm over that of its W213-generation predecessor. This benefits passenger space, as well as luggage capacity which has grown to 540 litres.

While the W214 E-Class continues to wear a very much recognisable three-box sedan shape, its front fascia features a black high-gloss insert between the grille and the headlamps, which offers a tip of the hat to the styling of the brand’s EQ range of fully electric models.

Its headlamps feature LED DRLs which have been designed to mimic the shape of eyebrows, according to Mercedes-Benz, and the bonnet wears the ‘power dome’ surface shaping. Flush-fitting door handles – as seen on other models such as the EQE – can be optioned, while the tail lamps feature the three-pointed star motif in each of the two-unit assemblies.

The range of powertrains for the W214 E-Class consists of three mild-hybrid engines (one petrol and two diesels), along with three petrol-electric hybrids; all are of the inline four-cylinder configuration.

The petrol-electric PHEV range is comprised of the E 300 e, the E 300 e 4Matic and the E 400 e 4Matic. The E 300 e, along with the 4Matic (AWD) derivative packs a 1,999 cc petrol unit that outputs 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque on its own, and is paired with an electric motor that produces 129 hp and 440 Nm of torque to yield combined outputs of 308 hp and 550 Nm of torque.

The higher-rated E 400 e 4Matic produces 252 hp and 400 Nm of torque from its petrol engine, which is paired with identical outputs from the electric motor as with the E 300 duo, yielding higher combined outputs of 375 hp and 650 Nm.

Among the mild-hybrids are two diesels and one petrol, the former being the E 220 d and its 4Matic AWD sibling that packs a 1,993 cc turbodiesel making 197 hp at 3,600 rpm and 440 Nm from 1,800 rpm to 2,800 rpm. The petrol variant for Europe is the E 200, packing a 1,999 cc turbo petrol that makes 204 hp at 5,800 rpm and 320 Nm from 1,800 rpm to 4,000 rpm.

    The North American market instead receives the E 350 4Matic, also packing a 2.0 litre turbo petrol albeit producing 255 hp at 5,800 rpm and 400 Nm from 2,000 – 3,000 rpm, along with a six-cylinder petrol E 450 4Matic that outputs 381 hp from 5,800 – 6,100 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,800 – 5,000 rpm.

    The E 220 d does 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 238 km/h (7.8 seconds and 234 km/h for the 4Matic), while the E 200 petrol does 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h.

    2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W214 – mild-hybrids, PHEVs up to 115 km EV range; MBUX Superscreen

    Thus equipped, the E 300 e does 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 236 km/h, while its 4Matic all-wheel-drive equivalent is marginally slower at 6.5 seconds to 100 km/h and a 234 km/h top end. Meanwhile, the E 400 e 4Matic does 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of 250 km/h.

All three petrol-electric PHEV variants pack a 25.4 kWh drive battery, and all yield a three-figure electric-only range; both 4Matic variants can reach up to 109 km on battery power alone, while the E 300 e does up to 115 km; all figures are based on the EAER WLTP protocol.

For chassis, the W214 E-Class employs a four-arm configuration for the front suspension, while the rear wheels are on a five-link rear suspension layout. Standard equipment for mild-hybrid powertrain variants are fitted with the Agility Control steel-sprung suspension with adjustable damping, and rides 15 mm lower than the PHEVs in the range.

Optional air suspension kit on the W214 comes as part of the Technology pack, which brings the Airmatic setup with ADS+ continuously variable damping. Also optional is the rear-axle steering setup that offers up to 4.5 degrees of steering at the rear wheels, which reduces the turning circle by up to 90 cm, according to Mercedes-Benz.

Inside, screens take centrestage in the cabin of the W214 E-Class, where the latest iteration of the multi-screen infotainment display ensemble is called Superscreen. This setup brings the optional front passenger screen to the proceedings, and joins the main central display while the driver gets their own high-resolution display for instrumentation.

The Superscreen, when specified also brings a selfie and video camera mounted atop the dashboard, and packs an entertainment suite with a host of third-party applications. Available from launch in Europe are TikTok, the Angry Birds game, Webex, Zoom as well as the Vivaldi browser. Fancy a light show to go with your music? Active Ambient Lighting coordinates frequencies in colour tones and brightness, and is beat-synchronous with “practically no time lag,” says Mercedes-Benz.

While the front passenger can watch dynamic content on the passenger screen, the driver will be blocked from viewing the content on the front passenger display to avoid screen-based distraction.

Accessibility for the W214 E-Class is augmented by the Digital Vehicle Key, which is available for the Apple iPhone and the Apple Watch and thus enabling the vehicle to be shared with up to 16 persons at once. The owner can assign different operating rights to different individuals, such as granting only static access to the vehicle, or also allowing it to be driven.

When on the move, passengers can use the Energizing Comfort wellness programme which aims to mitigate the symptoms of motion sickness, while the Energizing Coach programme offers individual recommendations for the wellbeing features. As part of the Thermotronic climate control option, Digital Vent Control enables the air vents to be set digitally to a particular ventilation programme, and can be done for each seat through the user profile. The air-conditioning nozzles can still be manually adjusted.

The ADAS suite in the W214 E-Class includes Active Distance Assist, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package with reverse camera and Speed Limit Assist. Attention Assist now adds a driver distraction alert, and will warn the driver acoustically and visually. If, ultimately the driver fails to respond to the alerts, the car will initiate an emergency stop via the Active Emergency Stop Assist function.

Optionally available is Driving Assistance Plus, which adds Active Steering Assist as a lane-keeping function. In the W214, when lane markings are no longer clearly visible and Active Steering Assist is no longer available, the system will alert the driver by vibrating the steering wheel.

For the European market, the W214-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class goes on sale in the northern hemisphere summer of 2023, and the first batch of customer units are expected to arrive in showrooms in Europe in autumn.

  • W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class to debut on April 25

    W214 E-Class

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the next generation E-Class codenamed W214 will make its world premiere on April 25 2023. The unveiling will be viewable live on YouTube and on Mercedes-Benz’s own livestreaming platform.

We’ve already had a preview of the new E-Class’ interior before this back in February 2023 when Mercedes-Benz dropped a bunch of teaser images showing how the new W214’s dashboard will look like. It features a design that appears to be inspired by the brand’s flagship EV sedan, the EQS.

    W214 E-Class Interior

While the interior design isn’t a radical departure from existing models, Mercedes-Benz did go to great lengths to cram as much technology into the cabin as possible. There’s even a selfie camera which allows users to participate in online video conferences and take photos or videos when the car is stationary.

At launch, Mercedes-Benz says the E-Class will support TikTok, the Angry Birds game, the Vivaldi browser as well as Webex and Zoom. The entertainment portal Zync is also included for streaming services.

W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior gets MBUX Superscreen, TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, selfie cam!

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the interior of the sixth-generation E-Class (codenamed W214) sedan, which is set to make its debut this year. According to the German carmaker, the W214 will arrive at European dealerships in the summer (June to August) before a market launch in the United States kicks off this autumn (September to November).

In terms of design, the dashboard of the all-new E-Class appears to be inspired by the brand’s flagship EV sedan, the EQS. Unlike the current S-Class and C-Class that feature individual air vents, the E-Class integrates them into a thin bar that spans the width of the dash, extending slightly to meet with the bottom section of the dash.

This forms a frame for the two touchscreens, which is highlighted by an ambient light strip. You’ll find more lighting in the door cards, with the upper strip extending all the way past the A-pillars to near the base of the windscreen. In this vicinity, you’ll also notice the selfie camera. Yes, Mercedes-Benz has placed a selfie camera inside its car, and we’ll get to that later on.

The discreet air vents can be directed by manual adjustment or electrically if Thermotronic is optioned, which includes a new comfort function called Digital Vent Control where each vent duct has two electric motors – one for the vertical and one for the horizontal louvres.

W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior gets MBUX Superscreen, TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, selfie cam!

Elsewhere, the driver is faced with a standing digital instrument cluster (with Classic and Sporty styles) and a steering wheel design that is common among the brand’s models these days. There’s also a small row of controls just before you reach the centre console for things like drive modes, driver assists, media volume, a fingerprint reader, what appears to charging-related and quick access to vehicle functions. Climate controls – now integrated into the touchscreen – also require more taps to adjust fan speed and temperature, unlike in the EQS, S-Class and C-Class.

Progressing further, the centre console is largely uneventful, with the front storage compartment containing cupholders, while the armrest in the rear section hides USB parts in the storage space below – there’s ambient lighting here too. As you’d expect, there’s no shortage of upholsteries, colours and trims offered so customers can personalise their cars to their taste.

While the interior design isn’t a radical departure from existing models, Mercedes-Benz did go to great lengths to cram as much technology into the cabin as possible. “Customers can look forward to a particularly immersive entertainment experience in the new E-Class,” it said in its release.

Remember that selfie camera? Well, it allows users to participate in online video conferences and take photos or videos when the car is stationary. This is part of the optional MBUX Superscreen (not to be confused with the EQS’ MBUX Hyperscreen) that is represented by the glass-covered large touchscreen in the centre of the dash.

W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior gets MBUX Superscreen, TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, selfie cam!

This version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience is powered by a central computer with a single processor instead of multiple processor for different functions. The carmaker says its new software-focused architecture allows for faster data streams and individual updating of interior systems in the future. If it’s starting to sound like a smartphone, you’re not far off.

In fact, the software used for the infotainment system comes with a new compatibility layer that allows third-party apps to be installed. At launch, Mercedes-Benz says the E-Class will support TikTok, the Angry Birds game, the Vivaldi browser as well as Webex and Zoom. The entertainment portal Zync is also included for streaming services, although this requires the MBUX Entertainment Plus package for data input up to 5G speeds.

The front passenger isn’t left out either. With the optional screen that sits beside the main one, he or she can view content without distracting the driver. This is because the front passenger display is switchable and there’s a function the carmaker calls a visual shield that uses an advanced filtering concept to make sure the driver can no longer see the content on that specific screen.

The concept works in two stages, with the first being recognising if the front passenger seat is occupied and will either enable the on-screen functions or turn into a digital decorative feature. Should the front passenger want to watch a movie, the display’s dual light control technology prevents content from being seen peripherally by the person behind the wheel.

W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior gets MBUX Superscreen, TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, selfie cam!

This function can be switched on and off, but the cameras (one in the instrument cluster and the other on the top of the dash) will constantly monitor the driver’s eye movements and consider driving inputs to determine if the driver is distracted. If needed, the brightness of the passenger screen is reduced.

Mercedes-Benz says this technology has been verified in extensive trials with test subjects and noted in its release that “the authorities in the European Union, the USA, China, Norway, the United Kingdom and Switzerland allow free audio enjoyment of dynamic content with this system.”

One feature that the new E-Class offers that all passengers can enjoy is its built-in rave lights, or better known by its marketing term: Active Ambient Lighting. Essentially, Mercedes-Benz wants acoustics to be experienced with a third sense, which is vision. As such, the light strips we talked about earlier act as visualisers corresponding to the type of music played – rapid light changes for fast beats and softly merging lighting moods with slower rhythms.

On the mention of sound, the E-Class is available with a Burmester 4D surround sound system that consists of 17 loud speakers, allowing it to have native integration of Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos from Apple Music.

W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior gets MBUX Superscreen, TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, selfie cam!

The Active Ambient Lighting will also visualise information from the parking assist and can warn the driver when using the Drive Away function of Active Brake Assist to exit junctions with crossing traffic. Additionally, the system is enabled when the anti-car-sickness function of Energizing Comfort is activated.

Entertainment purposes aside, the infotainment system also adapts to the personal habits of the owner thanks to artificial intelligence. This allows routines to be programmed or automatically generated as the car learns how it is being used on the daily, although the latter is still in development. Similarly, in-app and function suggestions are also presented as per the so-called zero-layer interface of MBUX that appeared in the EQS.

Are you impressed by the interior of the all-new E-Class? Will you be looking forward to play Angry Birds or conduct a video conference right from the driver seat?
