MG Cyberster RWD now in Malaysia – 340 PS, 475 Nm, 0-100 in 5s, 508 km range, RM20k cheaper at RM300k

MG Motor Malaysia has officially announced the MG Cyberster RWD, which joins the Cyberster AWD that was launched here in December 2024. As its name suggests, the RWD has a single motor driving the rear wheels, as opposed to the dual-motor AWD roadster.

The RWD has 340 PS and 475 Nm of torque, which is 204 PS and 250 Nm down on the AWD. The 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in five seconds flat in the RWD, which makes it 1.8 seconds slower than the AWD. The 77 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery of the AWD remains, which means that the less powerful car gets more range – 508 km vs 444 km on the AWD.

Max charging rates are 150 kW for DC fast charging (10% to 80% SoC in 38 minutes) and 7 kW for AC – this is similar across variants. The specs are similar too, other than the alloy wheel size – which is 19-inch for the RWD (245/45 front, 275/40 rear), an inch smaller than the AWD’s 20s. The AWD’s red Brembo calipers are present here too.

Powertrain and wheels aside, the RWD shares the same long list of kit as the AWD, and is available in the same four colours – Dynamic Red, Camden Grey, Inca Yellow and English White. Go for red or grey and you’ll get a black-red cabin theme; yellow and white cars come with a grey interior. A red soft top is a RM2,000 option for Camden Grey and English White.

“The MG Cyberster shows how far electric vehicles have come – it delivers style, power, and innovation without compromise. With the new RWD variant, we are giving more Malaysians the opportunity to own a true electric roadster that blends our motorsport heritage with future-forward EV technology,” said Emory QiFeng, MD of SAIC Motor Malaysia.

Finally, price. The Cyberster RWD is priced at RM300,748 on-the-road without insurance, which is exactly RM20k cheaper than the AWD. It comes with a seven-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, eight-year or 180,000 km battery warranty and eight-year or 160,000 km drive Motor and motor control unit warranty. MG is throwing in a year of unlimited charging with JomCharge and a free 7 kW wallbox to ease you into the EV life.

MG Cyberster RWD now in Malaysia – 340 PS, 475 Nm, 0-100 in 5s, 508 km range, RM20k cheaper at RM300k

To sum it up, the RWD has the same showstopping style and scissor doors as the AWD, but is less fast and rolls on smaller wheels (it’s still fast and the 19s don’t look small at all). On the flipside, it has 64 km more range and is RM20k cheaper. You can check the Cyberster out and play with its scissor doors at 1 Utama’s old wing from July 9-13.

For now, browse our gallery of the Cyberster AWD below. Still the only electric roadster on the market, the Cyberster has to be the most gaya that RM300k can buy you, by a cyber mile.

Amid the craze of the recently-concluded Auto Shanghai 2025 show, it’s easy to forget we already have one of the coolest Chinese electric vehicles in Malaysia. That would be the MG Cyberster, a stunning two-seat roadster that harks back to Morris Garages’ storied open-topped sports cars but with a new-age powertrain.

It was launched at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) in December, available in a sole top-spec all-wheel-drive variant priced at RM319,900. We’ve now gotten our hands on it, giving us (and you) the chance to pore over every detail of this fascinating machine.

The powertrain is pretty standard EV fare (if you could ever call a car with over 500 horsepower “standard”) – dual motors producing 544 PS (400 kW) and 725 Nm of torque. No fancy torque vectoring, multi-speed transmissions or fake gearshifts here, just a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.2 seconds and a fairly tepid top speed of 201 km/h.

Also not unusual is the 77 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery that provides a decent WLTP-rated range of 444 km, although it does saddle the Cyberster with a lot of weight. The AWD model tips the scales at just over two tonnes, which is not ideal for a sports car – especially one that references its lightweight predecessors (such as the iconic MGB) so overtly.

The battery, by the way, supports up to 144 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the pack from 10 to 80% takes 38 minutes. There’s only a 7 kW on-board charger, however, so charging the battery from 10 to 100% using an AC wallbox takes a yawning 10.5 hours.

Don’t get us wrong – the Cyberster does still have lots of good bits, starting with that exterior. The design is sleek and hides the car’s relative bulk well (it measures 4,535 mm long and 1,913 mm wide), led by a shark nose front end with almond-shaped LED headlights and a split lower air intake. With little in the way of adornment along the sides, the eyes are drawn towards the sharp front fender line that sweeps into the doors, before being picked up the deliciously voluptuous rear haunches.

More controversial is the rear end, which features Union Jack-inspired taillights that form a literal arrow in concert with the indicators. Helping to slim the car down is the layered rear deck design with areas of gloss black, visually lowering its height.

Being that this is technically last year’s model, you do lose out on the Chinese market’s forthcoming 2026 model year enhancements. These include the new Iris Green paint put to such good use on the Cyber GTS coupé concept – which, by the way, is coming to production.

Not to worry, because even the launch version won’t struggle to turn heads thanks to the available Dynamic Red paint, as seen on this test car. And that’s before you pop open the pair of powered (!) scissor doors that give the car some Lamborghini-style visual drama.

As it’s the AWD version, the Malaysian car rides on the largest available 20-inch “Jetstream” seven-spoke alloy wheels. This car obviously has a black roof, but we’ve also seen a English White unit with a red soft top, which draws the eye in its own way.

Step inside and you’ll find a cockpit-like cabin that wraps around the driver, available in either a grey-and-white colour scheme or, in the case of Dynamic Red and Camden Grey units, this fetching black-and-red option. Both occupants sit on plush sports seats with six-way power adjustment, memory and Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery, facing a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddles for selecting the drive modes and regenerative braking strength.

But the highlight is the bank of screens, consisting of a 10.25-inch digital instrument display that is flanked by two more seven-inch touchscreens for controlling the infotainment and vehicular functions. Another seven-inch touchscreen housing the dual-zone climate controls sits on the centre console. Other features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.

Again, no MY2026 upgrades here just yet, so no lumbar support, no wind deflector between the roll hoops, no updated voice control system and no MINI Convertible-style counter to show how many times you’ve dropped the roof. We also lose out on presumably useful improvements to range and chassis tuning, as well as a boost in boot space from the current 244 litres.

The existing Cyberster is already fitted with a full range of driver assistance features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.

Joining a resurgent sports car market that also includes the recently-launched facelifted Mazda MX-5, Cyberster is certainly unique in the marketplace, offering electric mobility and scissor doors before Porsche’s forthcoming, also-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman inevitably crash the party. Would you get this over its combustion-powered rivals? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

MG Cyberster launched in Malaysia – AWD EV roadster, 544 PS, 725 Nm, 444 km range, RM320k

The latest car to be launched at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) is the MG Cyberster. The two-seater electric roadster was previewed in Malaysia in August, and SAIC Motor Malaysia has made good on its promise to price the car below RM350,000.

Available in a single all-wheel-drive variant for now, the Cyberster is priced at RM319,900 on-the-road without insurance. This figure includes a seven-year/150,000 km warranty and an eight-year/180,000 km battery warranty.

Power comes from dual electric motors producing a total of of 544 PS (400 kW) and 725 Nm of torque. So equipped, the Cyberster completes the century sprint in just 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 201 km/h. But this two-seat roadster is a far cry from the lightweight sports cars that defined the (now Chinese-owned) British brand’s past, and that’s due to the standard-fit 77 kWh battery.

This provides a WLTP-rated range of 444 km, and with support for up to 144 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the pack from 10 to 80% takes 38 minutes. There’s only a 7 kW on-board charger, however, so charging the battery from 10 to 100% using an AC wallbox takes a yawning 10.5 hours.

Taking inspiration from the iconic MGB Roadster, the Cyberster certainly cuts an attractive figure, led by a shark nose front end with almond-shaped LED headlights and a split lower air intake. With little in the way of adornment along the sides, the eyes are drawn towards the sharp front fender line that sweeps into the doors, before being picked up the deliciously voluptuous rear haunches.

At the back, you’ll find probably the Cyberster’s second most obnoxious design cue – the Union Jack-inspired taillights that form a literal arrow in concert with the indicators. Of course, you won’t miss the actual most obnoxious feature – a pair of powered (!) scissor doors that give the car some Lamborghini-style visual drama. Being the all-wheel-drive version, the Malaysian-spec model rides on the largest available 20-inch “Jetstream” seven-spoke alloy wheels, as seen here.

The rear-wheel-drive version was also previewed at KLIMS

The Cyberster is also available with a full range of driver assistance features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert with auto brake, rear collision warning and a door opening warning.

While the AWD version was the only car launched here today, SAIC Motor Malaysia also previewed the rear-wheel-drive version that is tipped to go on sale sometime next year. That car makes 340 PS (250 kW) and 475 Nm of torque, making for a century sprint of five seconds flat and a top speed of 195 km/h. The same 77 kWh battery provides a range of 509 km.

Previewed in Malaysia in August, the MG Cyberster is now open for booking ahead of its public debut at the paultan.org Auto Car Expo 2024 this weekend, October 26 and 27. With the news comes estimated pricing for the sole dual-motor all-wheel-drive model, which is expected to retail below RM350,000.

For that, you get a total system output of 544 PS (400 kW) and 725 Nm of torque. So equipped, the Cyberster completes the century sprint in just 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 201 km/h. • MG Cyberster to make special appearance at ACE 2024 – first public display of roadster with scissor doors!

MG Cyberster to make special appearance at ACE 2024 – first public display of roadster with scissor doors!

Surprise! We’ve just received confirmation that the MG Cyberster will make a special appearance at our own paultan.org Auto Car Expo (ACE) 2024 show, which will take place over the weekend of October 26-27 at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC). This will be the electric roadster’s first public display in Malaysia.

This is not any electric roadster, of course, as it’s one fitted with Lambo-style scissor doors; the very first of its kind at that. Two upward-opening and powered doors, two seats, power-operated retractable fabric top, supercar-baiting performance (0-100 km/h in 3.8 second on the AWD model) and to 509 km of range – what’s not to like?

MG really has gone all out to make the Cyberster – its 100th anniversary celebration showcase – a special treat for its fans. It stands as both the brand’s flagship and halo model, blending MG’s rich roadster heritage with the vigour of modern electric innovation.

It has already been confirmed that the Cyberster will eventually be launched in Malaysia, so the public display at ACE 2024 can be a great opportunity for you to try it on for size before making that all-important decision: should you get it in Dynamic Red or Inca Yellow?

It’s also a fact that it looks far better in the flesh than it does in photos, so seeing it in person is an absolute must. The minimalist yet plush all-Nappa leather and Alcantara cockpit (to be shown in right-hand drive form, ready for launch) is best experienced first hand too, of course.

Alongside the Cyberster, MG will also showcase its entire lineup at ACE 2024, including the MG5 that will be launched today, the HS SUV that will be introduced very soon, the ZS EV and the MG4. Entry is free, so we’ll see you at SCCC on October 26-27!

2024 MG Cyberster EV previewed in Malaysia – 2-seat roadster, up to 544 PS, 509 km range, scissor doors

Here’s a surprise – alongside the MG5 and HS, SAIC Motor Malaysia has also previewed the MG Cyberster today. The electric roadster will be the brand’s third EV to be sold here after the MG4 and ZS EV, and it’s radically different from either of them.

Unlike with its other two models here, the company has provided nothing in terms of specs or pricing. However, it has previously confirmed it will be launched in the third quarter of the year, so we can expect it to arrive next month unless there’s been a delay.

A two-seat roadster, the Cyberster is thus a unique proposition amidst the burgeoning EV segment, its closest competitor being the petrol-powered Mazda MX-5 RF at RM277,000. But the MG is a far cry from that no-frills Japanese sports car, not when it weights a tonne more at over two tonnes.

2024 MG Cyberster EV previewed in Malaysia – 2-seat roadster, up to 544 PS, 509 km range, scissor doors

That weight comes courtesy of the electric powertrain. The Cyberster is available in two variants, including the rear-wheel-drive version shown here that produces 340 PS (250 kW) and 475 Nm of torque. This enables the car to get from zero to 100 km/h in five seconds flat on its way to a top speed of 195 km/h.

Also available is an all-wheel-drive model that has 544 PS (400 kW) and an impressive 725 Nm at its disposal. So equipped, the Cyberster completes the century sprint in just 3.2 seconds, while its top speed is extended slightly to 201 km/h.

But the bit that contributes the most to the heft is the battery – a 77 kWh pack comes standard and delivers a WLTP-rated range of 509 km on the RWD model and 444 km with AWD. The car supports up to 144 kW of DC fast charging, topping up the battery from 10 to 80% in 38 minutes. There’s only a 7 kW on-board charger, however, so charging the battery from 10 to 100% using an AC wallbox takes a yawning 10.5 hours.

Step inside and you’ll find a cockpit-like cabin that wraps around the driver, available in either black-and red or grey-and-white colour schemes. Both occupants sit on plush sports seats with six-way power adjustment, memory and Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery, facing a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddles for selecting the drive modes and regenerative braking strength.

All that’s left is pricing, but as mentioned earlier, we have no idea how much the Cyberster will cost. In Thailand, however, the sole AWD variant retails at 2,499,000 baht (RM318,500), and our EV tax exemptions should mean it’ll be slightly cheaper here. Could we then see the RWD model costing well under RM300,000?

Bangkok 2024: MG Cyberster EV – 544 PS/725 Nm roadster, 0-100 km/h in 3.2 secs, coming to Malaysia

SAIC Motor Malaysia is set to launch the MG brand in the country tomorrow with the official debut of the MG4 and ZS EV, but sports car aficionados can look forward to a flashier all-electric proposition from the brand in the form of the Cyberster roadster, with the presence of the model on the company’s website being an indication of that intent.

Prospective buyers may not have long to wait, given that the car, which measures in at 4,535 mm long, 1,913 mm wide and 1,329 mm tall, with a 2,690 mm-long wheelbase, has made its way to Thailand. The Cyberster is on show at the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show 2024, and details about it as well as its price for that market have also been revealed.

While the Cyberster is available in three variant and output forms in China, Thailand is set to sell the scissor-doored roadster, reminiscent of the MG TF, in its range-topping form, in this case a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with 544 PS and 725 Nm, which is good to haul the car from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds on the way to a 200 km/h top speed.

Bangkok 2024: MG Cyberster EV – 544 PS/725 Nm roadster, 0-100 km/h in 3.2 secs, coming to Malaysia

Providing juice to the electric motor is a 77 kWh battery, which offers 503 km of NEDC-rated travel range on a single charge. The company states that AC charging via a MG home charger will get the batter from a zero to 100% state-of-charge in approximately 11 hours, while DC fast charging gets the unit from 10 to 80% SoC in around 26 minutes at a maximum charge rate of 140 kW.

Exterior kit includes a soft-top canvas roof, automatic LED headlights as well as LED DRLs and tail lights. The AWD unit rides on 20-inch alloys, which are wrapped with 245/40 front and 275/35 rear profile tyres.

Buyers in Thailand will have a choice of two two-tone interior colour schemes to pick from. The first is a grey and white combination, while the second is what you see here in the photos of the BIMS display example, a striking red and black scheme.

Bangkok 2024: MG Cyberster EV – 544 PS/725 Nm roadster, 0-100 km/h in 3.2 secs, coming to Malaysia

Interior elements include a triple-screen digital display panel, consisting of a 10.25-inch screen flanked by two seven-inch screens, joined in a row and Y-shape sports seats wrapped with Nappa and Alcantara leather. Also to be found are six-way powered driver/passenger seats, plenty of soft-touch elements as well as 64-colour ambient lighting.

The Cyberster also comes equipped with a Bose sound system, dual-zone air-conditioning, a PM 2.5 air filter system and an electronic parking brake, and there is of course Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

In terms of safety, aside from the usual raft of electronic assist items (traction, stability, braking), the Cyberster comes with a 3D around view camera system and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance kit.

These include lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, forward collision warning system and AEB braking, adaptive cruise control with low speed automatic cruise control as well as blind spot detection. There is also rear cross traffic alert and braking intervention.

As for pricing, the all-wheel drive MG Cyberster is priced at 2,499,000 baht (RM324,450), and for that market comes with a five-year or 160,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/200,000 km battery warranty. Not exactly cheap, yes, but the convertible aspect will surely have its own unique appeal among the EV buying crowd. Do you think it will do well in Malaysia?

MG Cyberster EV debuts at Auto Shanghai 2023 – electric sports car to go on sale in Europe, UK in 2024

With its showing at Auto Shanghai 2023, the MG Cyberster has been confirmed to enter production and is expected to go on sale in Europe and the United Kingdom in the northern hemisphere summer of 2024, in time for the brand’s 100th anniversary, the company has stated.

Confirmation that the Cyberster will enter production came a month after the first concept was shown at Auto Shanghai 2021, and here the latest concept appears to be much more productionised compared to the concept car that was shown previously.

Styling of the Cyberster is shown to be more subdued, bringing a more conventionally styled front fascia compared to the dramatically sweeping front grille on the concept, along with redesigned headlamps and more realistically sized wheels and tyres.

There are now also a pair of conventional mirrors on its scissor doors, while the ‘speedster’ humps and roll hoops on the rear deck of the earlier concept have also made way for a conventional fabric folding roof. At the rear, the full-width light strip and the arrow-design tail lamp graphic have been reproportioned compared to the units on the previous concept, now offering more visual width.

New technical details are scarce with the release of these latest images of the Cyberster, though it has been said to feature single- and dual-motor electric powertrains ranging from 313 PS to 544 PS in outputs, according to Auto Express. MG has previously said that the Cyberster will do the 0-100 km/h sprint in under three seconds, and has promised a maximum range of up to 800 km on a single charge.

“The focus for Cyberster was to create a design that was respectful of the brand’s illustrious past and to bring back that sporting bloodline, while also being absolutely clear that it should be modern and forward-facing like the MG of today, completely in-tune with the rapid transition to electric vehicles,” said MG advanced design director Carl Gotham.
