Proton X50 Sport Edition launching Jan 16; 1k-unit run

You saw it last month at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024; now Proton has announced on Facebook that the Proton X50 Sport Edition will be launching in Malaysia this Thursday, January 16. You can watch the virtual launch live on Facebook, TikTok and YouTube at 9pm.

The car will be limited to “approximately 1,000 units”. As seen at KLIMS, it wears a bodykit which consists of a red front splitter, side skirts and rear spats. There’s also new black paint, a gloss black finish for the grille surround and tailgate garnish (previously satin chrome), plus a red shoulder line stripe.

Also fitted are new 18-inch ten-spoke gloss black alloy wheels, fitted to a lower-spec variant of the original Geely Binyue (the X50 usually gets the top-spec two-tone rollers on the Premium and Flagship variants). Finishing off the look is a chrome Sport Edition badge on the tailgate, with the car also gaining door sill scuff plates and a Qi wireless charger.

The X50 Sport Edition is based on the RM101,800 Premium variant, meaning it uses the port-injected 150 PS/226 Nm 1.5 litre turbo three-cylinder engine and a seven-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox.

It also means the car loses out on the Flagship’s driver assistance features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist.

“Stay tuned for a special announcement during the event!” says Proton in the Facebook post caption – we wonder what that could be. We’ll know on Thursday.

  • Mitsubishi Triton show truck at KLIMS 2024 – bodykit, off-road wheels, tyres provide modding inspiration

Mitsubishi Triton show truck at KLIMS 2024 – bodykit, off-road wheels, tyres provide modding inspiration

Also present at the Mitsubishi booth at the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) is a Triton show truck. Like the Xpander art car next to it, the accessorised pick-up is meant to provide buyers with inspiration in terms of customising their vehicles.

Similar to its stablemate, this particular Yamabuki Orange Triton Athlete is wearing a bodykit from D Mod, including a deep front spoiler with built-in driving lights, side rubbing strips, rear bumper extensions and a tailgate appliqué. These, together with the grille, are finished in metallic black, giving the truck a welcome hit of contrasting colour.

Other accessories fitted are a roof trim piece above the windscreen and a sports bar, as well as black Enkei Tuning SC59 wheels wrapped in knobbly Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 off-road tyres. Inside, you’ll find black and red leather upholstery (as opposed to the standard Athlete’s part-leather seats) with a hexagonal stitch pattern, as well as red dashboard and door stitching replacing the usual orange.

No changes to the kit nor the mechanicals, so this Athlete uses the same 2.4 litre 4N16 twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, pushing out 204 PS and 470 Nm. All that gets sent through a six-speed automatic gearbox and an Easy Select four-wheel-drive system.

The previous second-generation Triton showed that Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) was not shy in offering several modified limited-edition models, so we hope this show truck means it will continue to do the same with the third-gen model. Like the look? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

  • Perodua eMO-II is ‘Episode 2’, third is production EV below RM90k in 2025; fully developed in-house – CEO

Perodua eMO-II is ‘Episode 2’, third is production EV below RM90k in 2025; fully developed in-house – CEO

There’s something different about concept cars from national makes, as they preview something that many of us can potentially afford. They’re more significant, they conjure up more excitement.

Tasked by the government to come up with an affordable EV by a publicly announced deadline (no pressure!), Perodua started from scratch (unlike Proton, P2’s foreign partner Daihatsu does not have a suitable donor car), knuckled down, and delivered in style with the eMO-II concept that has made its debut at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024.

The previous eMO (pronounced as M-O) was a 1:6 scale model unveiled in May 2023. This is a full-sized working prototype that Perodua president and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad described as the second episode of P2’s EV journey. The third episode, he says, will be the production car that will surface next year – the company’s first-ever EV.

Perodua eMO-II is ‘Episode 2’, third is production EV below RM90k in 2025; fully developed in-house – CEO

“This prototype is the continuation of our EV journey as we continue to build this technology from the ground up. eMO-II has been improved from its predecessor in terms of styling and features, and it’s now more defined as we chart our EV future,” he said, while reminding us that the eMO-II is still a prototype. “There are plenty of other features and improvements that we will add to our finished product,” Zainal added.

The eMO-II was fully developed in-house by Perodua’s R&D team and akin to being thrown into the proverbial deep end of the pool. “It has been a steep learning curve for our team as we have engaged numerous consultants to understand the inner workings of an EV, but I am happy to say that our team have managed to keep our timeline and be able to continue our story here today,” Zainal said.

It’s always wise to get help from experts in their field, and Bufori is amazing at finishing and painting. I knew that the automotive artisans were involved with the working prototype when I spotted Bufori founder Gerry Khouri and long-time right-hand man Felix Haller in the crowd this morning – they do some crazy work over at Kepong, which you can read about more here and here. The design is 100% Perodua though.

Perodua eMO-II is ‘Episode 2’, third is production EV below RM90k in 2025; fully developed in-house – CEO

Malaysia doesn’t have a strong EV ecosystem, yet, which is why the production Perodua EV will have its motor, inverter and battery initially imported, but Zainal says that there’s a commitment to localise. The battery will be sourced from CATL, one of the top makers of EV batteries in the world.

Zainal said that Perodua is also working with several Malaysian corporations to ensure ‘greater mobility’ for all its customers. “Greater mobility means that we take into consideration all aspects of EV ownership to ensure that our customers find the car to be efficient, friendly and easy to use, complete with supporting infrastructure by Malaysia’s best.

“We understand that electrification goes beyond more than just a new way to drive but it represents our effort in fighting climate change by reducing our carbon footprint. We support this mission and will do our best to make this a reality,” he said.

Perodua eMO-II is ‘Episode 2’, third is production EV below RM90k in 2025; fully developed in-house – CEO

Recently, P2 signed an MoU with charge point operator Gentari – a Petronas subsidiary – that will see the latter setting up charging facilities at Perodua service centres. The move is aimed at supporting Perodua customers in the transition to EVs.

The Perodua chief is also aware of the main concerns of carbuyers when it comes to EV adoption. The most commonly cited negative point is the perceived lack of charging points. Of late, many have also caught on to the fact that EV resale values are rather poor – depreciation is definitely much steeper than what we’re used to with ICE cars.

“We will make further announcements regarding the charging system as we plan to have an EV charging station every 40 to 50 km, whether it is a fixed permanent charger or a mobile charger, which is still under study. We are also looking at the resale value, as I mentioned before, we would like to maintain its second-hand value,” Zainal said at KLIMS yesterday.

Finally, price. Yes, EVs are everywhere in certain areas of the Klang Valley these days, and if you don’t venture beyond these upmarket neighbourhoods, you might start to think that we’re well on track to become Norway. But let’s not forget that Perodua has over the years consistently taken over 40% market share, which translates to four out of every 10 new cars sold. All of the market leader’s products are priced below RM80k. That’s how the overall Malaysian auto market looks like.

So affordability is still very much an issue when it comes to mass adoption of EVs, something Perodua has been tasked by the government to solve. The production eMO-II will be positioned between RM50,000 and RM90,000, Zainal said. He believes that even without the RM100k minimum price currently imposed on CBU EVs, P2’s EV will be the cheapest in Malaysia.

“Based on our study, in the first quarter of 2025, the other EV companies that are selling EVs now would not be able to sell at lower prices (than Perodua), since it might compromise other things. So for us, we still hope we can sell the cheapest EV around,” he added.

Let’s take a quick look at the bottom end of the current EV market. Currently, the cheapest EV in Malaysia is the Neta V at the floor price of RM100k. Sold with huge discounts, it can be had as low as RM75k. There are plans for CKD local assembly, which would lower the Neta’s RRP to the ‘market price’ (it starts from RM70k in Thailand). However, the Neta V is a super basic car that has questionable safety and looks awkward, to put it mildly, and overall, it’s well below the standards expected of a Perodua.

There are rumours that Proton has plans for a smaller, more affordable EV than the eMas 7 SUV. Word is that the ‘eMas 5’ will be based on the Geely Geometry Xingyuan, but Proton’s CKD journeys are typically leisurely, and in any case, the eMas 7 is ahead of the line. That SUV, which is still in the teaser phase, will be CBU at launch and will remain so for some time.

The Neta V’s eventual CKD price – if that project materialises – would be a benchmark for Perodua if it wants the production eMO to be the cheapest EV on sale. In our humble opinion, it’s better to have an affordable but well-equipped EV that meets the demanding needs of Malaysians (Peroduas are much better kitted than basic cars anywhere in the region except Singapore) rather than aiming to be the absolute cheapest of its kind. But perhaps they will have both ends covered – note the RM50k to RM90k range mentioned by Zainal.

The challenge for Perodua is that initially, the EV would not have great economies of scale with planned production of just 500 units a month, but if anyone can make this almighty challenge of a project work, it’s the quiet achievers from Rawang. Go check out the eMO-II for yourself at KLIMS 2024 and tell us what you think – full details here.

Mitsubishi Xpander art car at KLIMS 2024 – “work in progress” by Nas Suha and Izzati Suza, see it yourself

While Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) isn’t launching any new cars at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) – having long since introduced both its new models for the year – the company is still putting on quite an exhibit. You certainly won’t miss the show-stopping Triton “rally truck” – a replica of its 2024 Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) racer – mounted on an incline that greets visitors as they walk into the hall.

The on-ground displays aren’t shabby, either. Smack in the centre of MMM’s stand is a facelifted Xpander show car wearing a D Mod bodykit that’s slightly different from the one set to be sold as a genuine accessory.

For a more garang appearance, some red lighting has been added to the grille, and the LED daytime running lights up top have also been tinted red. Completing the look are Rotiform AeroDisc wheels wrapped in super-sticky Yokohama Advan Neova AD09 tyres. Overkill for an MPV with a 105 PS 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated engine, that’s for sure.

We thought that was the end of that, but then two people turned up and started painting the bonnet of the car. It turned out that the Xpander was actually serving as a blank canvas for Malaysian artists Nas Suha and Izzati Suza, who would be turning the people carrier into an art car over the course of the show. That’s really cool.

Mitsubishi Xpander art car at KLIMS 2024 – “work in progress” by Nas Suha and Izzati Suza, see it yourself

Nas, who hails from Terengganu, is a illustrator, doodler and painter who has created several large-scale murals across Malaysia, having already collaborated with the likes of A&W, Samsung and Zus Coffee. Meanwhile, Setia Alam-based Izzati is known for her “Bibir Besar” artwork, which she sells on her store, Kedai Suza; she has partnered with companies such as Aeon and even Nike.

So far, the duo have only worked on the front of the car, with the anticipation that the entire piece will take three days to complete, only finishing this Saturday, December 7. Thus, there’s plenty of time for you to witness the live “work in progress” in action at KLIMS, which runs from today until next Wednesday, December 11 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

  • Peugeot e-3008 in Malaysia – electric SUV shown to gauge interest; petrol, hybrid variants possible

Peugeot e-3008 in Malaysia – electric SUV shown to gauge interest; petrol, hybrid variants possible

Stellantis Malaysia has brought the Peugeot e-3008 for display at the ongoing 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) to gauge the public’s reception towards the model. Having made its global debut in the third quarter of last year, the Peugeot e-3008 was sighted on Malaysian roads in September this year.

Built on Stellantis’ STLA Medium vehicle architecture, the e-3008 internationally gets the powertrain configurations – a single-motor 2WD variant with 213 PS and 343 Nm, a long-range variant with 231 PS/343 Nm, and a dual-motor, AWD variant with 326 PS.

The base variant of the e-3008 is equipped with a 73 kWh battery that offers this model up to 525 km of range, while the Long Range derivative of the single-motor variant gets a battery of a larger 98 kWh capacity, enabling up to 700 km of range. The dual-motor AWD variant stays with the 73 kWh of the base variant, and is claimed to offer a similar 525 km of range.

Charging the Peugeot e-3008 is enabled by a 11 kW AC onboard charger as standard, while a 22 kW AC charger is optionally available. DC fast charging is possible at up to 160 kW, and this enables a 20-80% state of charge to be achieved in 30 minutes.

Here in the GT trim version displayed at KLIMS, the interior features the Peugeot Panoramic i-Cockpit with a 21-inch curved touchscreen that is accompanied by a set of customisable touch-sensitive buttons which can be programmed to access up to 10 favourite functions, such as for navigation, phone calls, audio, air-conditioning and more.

ADAS features on the e-3008 include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane keeping assist, assisted lane change, speed limit notification, AEB, lane departure warning with lane departure correction, driver attention alert, long-range blind spot monitoring (up to 75 m), along with hill descent control and traction control including for low-grip conditions such as snow, mud and sand.

While it is the battery-electric version of the Peugeot 3008 that has been shown at KLIMS 2024, Stellantis Malaysia remains open to all options in terms of potential powertrain offerings for the fastback crossover. Internationally, ICE powertrains for the 3008 is a 1.2 litre PureTech mild-hybrid three-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 136 PS, and a 1.6 litre PHEV petrol with a 21 kWh battery that outputs 195 PS.

  • Malaysia has potential to become regional EV production hub, towards sustainable future – Fadillah

Malaysia has potential to become regional EV production hub, towards sustainable future – Fadillah

Malaysia has the potential to become a regional hub for EV production and innovation, said deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, according to a Bernama report.

In his speech at yesterday’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024 opening ceremony, he said that the mobility industry’s growth presents immense opportunities for local manufacturers and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to integrate into the global supply chain.

Malaysia’s National Investment Aspirations aim to position the country as a global supply chain hub by attracting high-quality investments and enhancing the capabilities of local industries, added Fadillah, who is also energy transition and water transformation minister.

Fadillah said KLIMS 2024 was an excellent platform to witness the advancements in automotive technology, bolstered by Malaysia’s regional collaboration through the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which aligns with Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN chair in 2025 to secure a sustainable energy future.

He called on stakeholders, particularly the mobility industry leaders, policymakers, innovators and consumers, to work hand-in-hand in driving the mission.

“Malaysia is committed to building a sustainable future for the generations to come. Transportation, being one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, is a critical area in our national energy transition plan. Consumer adoption of EVs and hybrid vehicles will drive the nation closer to its sustainability goals, with transformative initiatives like KLIMS playing a pivotal role in sparking widespread interest, collaboration, and action,” Fadillah said.

Meanwhile, KLIMS 2024 chairman and Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) president Mohd Samsor Mohd Zain said in his speech that the auto industry contributes 4% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) annually and is currently estimated to employ over 700,000 people.

“Over the years, the automotive industry has expanded tremendously in tandem with the country’s economic growth and the increasing standard of living.

“The total industry volume (TIV) for the automotive industry has grown leaps and bounds over the last three decades, from 200,000 units in 1994 to an all-time high of 799,731 units in 2023,” Mohd Samsor said, adding that a record 800,000 units is expected by end-2024.

  • MG7 previewed at KLIMS 2024 – sporty D-segment fastback sedan; ADAS; 261 PS 2.0T or 188 PS 1.5T

    MG7 previewed at KLIMS 2024 – sporty D-segment fastback sedan; ADAS; 261 PS 2.0T or 188 PS 1.5T

This is the MG7, a fastback sedan with a coupe-like roofline that is currently being previewed at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS). According to SAIC Motor Malaysia, the showcase of the MG7 highlights the brand’s expansion and commitment to bringing more options to our market, with other upcoming models being the MG3 Hybrid+ and ZS Hybrid+.

The first thing you need to know about the MG7 is that it is a Guinness World Record holder, specifically for achieving the greatest altitude change by a petrol-powered car at 5,978.17 metres. As part of the record attempt, an MG7 departed from Aiding Lake (-148.379 metres) on February 25, 2023 and stopped at the Laqiongla Mountains (5,829.788 m) on March 6, 2023.

The second thing you need to know about the MG7 is at 4,884 mm long, 1,889 mm wide, 1,447 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,778 mm, it is larger than the MG5 that was launched here back in October this year. For further context, the MG7’s footprint is comparable to D-segment sedans such as the latest Toyota Camry and Mazda 6 we get here, as well as the departed Honda Accord.

Power for the MG7 comes in the form of a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine making 261 PS (257 hp or 192 kW) and 405 Nm of torque, with drive going to the front wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

    MG7 previewed at KLIMS 2024 – sporty D-segment fastback sedan; ADAS; 261 PS 2.0T or 188 PS 1.5T

The sedan is also available with a 1.5 litre turbo four-pot with 188 PS (185 hp or 138 kW) and 300 Nm, which gets a seven-speed dual-clutch instead. Based on the ‘300 VGTI’ badge at the rear, this appears to be 1.5T variant – the 2.0T option has ‘405 VGTI’ instead (the numbers appear to correspond to the torque figure).

In terms of kit, the spec sheet lists 19-inch wheels, a variable sports exhaust system, panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a Bose sound system, a wireless charging pad, leather-trimmed bucket seats, a powered driver’s seat, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support as well as a 360-degree camera.

No shortage of advanced driver assistance features either, including front collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist. Passive safety systems are six airbags, ESP, ABS, EBD and traction control.

    MG7 previewed at KLIMS 2024 – sporty D-segment fastback sedan; ADAS; 261 PS 2.0T or 188 PS 1.5T

As for the styling, the MG7’s exterior does remind us of the pre-facelift Hyundai Elantra, albeit with the brand’s signature large grille, conspicuous exhaust outlets, frameless doors, a distinctive LED taillight signature and red brake calipers. Those prominent rear haunches and sleek roofline also add to the sedan’s sporty appeal.

Inside, the infotainment screen is framed together with a digital instrument cluster, joined by a sports steering wheel with a flat top and bottom. There are physical controls for the air-conditioning system (looks to be single-zone) with rear vents, while the engine start button and gear selector are arranged in a single file next to cupholders on the centre console.

The MG7 was launched in China at the end of March 2023 and is currently priced between 125,900 and 145,900 yuan (about RM77k and RM89k). It is also available in Vietnam (another left-hand drive market) where it ranges from VND738 million to 1.018 billion (RM129k to RM178k). Looking forward to this one coming our way?

  • GWM Wey 80 MPV previewed at KLIMS 2024 – 1.5T dual-motor plug-in hybrid, 487 PS and 762 Nm

    GWM Wey 80 MPV previewed at KLIMS 2024 – 1.5T dual-motor plug-in hybrid, 487 PS and 762 Nm

Aside from the Tank 500, Great Wall Motor (GWM) Malaysia also has the Wey 80 MPV on display at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), which opens to the public from tomorrow until December 11.

The seven-seater people carrier from the automaker’s luxury sub-brand is very much a preview, given that it’s a left-hand drive example. The show vehicle is also slightly different than the long-wheelbase LHD form shown at the Thai International Motor Expo recently, as the KLIMS show car is a standard wheelbase unit.

With no RHD yet, it’s not in the pipeline yet, but given how quickly things move these days, the MPV could be a market possibility in the region in the next 12 months. Should it come about, the three-row people mover, which measures in at 5,045 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,900 mm tall, with a 3,085 mm-long wheelbase, will enter a fast swelling MPV arena that will soon include the Denza D9 and GAC M8, the latter also being shown at KLIMS.

    GWM Wey 80 MPV previewed at KLIMS 2024 – 1.5T dual-motor plug-in hybrid, 487 PS and 762 Nm

The Wey 80 features a Hi4 plug-in hybrid system, which is made up of a 154 hp (156 PS) 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol mill paired with two electric motors, a 174 hp (177 PS, or 130 kW) unit at the front and an 181 hp (183 PS, or 135 kW) unit at the rear to offer a combined system output of 480 hp (487 PS or 358 kW) and 762 Nm. A 37.96 kWh ternary lithium battery provides the vehicle with up to 140 km (CLTC) of electric-only travel.

Inside, there’s a luxuriously appointed interior, complete with quilted leather, zero-gravity seats, with the second-row captain chairs equipped with foldable tables placed behind the front seats. A shared rail design for the second and third row seats provides an extra-long slide rail of 1845 mm for second-row seating adjustment, allowing for up to 1,166 mm of legroom to be gained for second row occupants.

Meanwhile, the third row incorporates a split butterfly seat design, allowing for 4/6 split tip-up seat folding to provide flexible seating configurations and easier luggage arrangement.

Novelties include a 1,600 watt, 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system (the LWB Thai version has 20 speakers) and a 12.5 litre large fridge with an independent compressor and adjustable temperature from 0-50°C, capable of accommodating no less than 14 standard-sized cans at one go.

There’s also a dedicated air fragrance system, with three themed choices to pick from. Incidentally, the KLIMS display vehicle features a sunroof, while the Thai show unit does not.

  • 2025 MG ZS Hybrid+ previewed in Malaysia – 2nd-gen B-segment SUV to join EV; 1.5L NA, 196 PS, 465 Nm

2025 MG ZS Hybrid+ previewed in Malaysia – 2nd-gen B-segment SUV to join EV; 1.5L NA, 196 PS, 465 Nm

Joining the MG3 Hybrid+ at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) is the MG ZS Hybrid+, previewed here ahead of a possible local launch. This is the second generation of the (Chinese-owned) British brand’s B-segment SUV, complementing the first-generation electric version that was launched in Malaysia in March.

The advent of a new generation brings with it a significant size increase, the new ZS being over 100 mm longer (4,430 mm), nine millimetres wider (1,818 mm) but 14 mm lower (1,635 mm), and with a 29 mm longer wheelbase. This is paired with a design that’s more in line with the larger HS – which, of course, has already received a second iteration.

In fact, the upswept window line, prominent rear fender flares and the F48 BMW X1-style rear end are all almost identical to the original HS. The front end, however, is all new and takes after the MG3, sporting slim headlights, a large octagonal grille and L-shaped corner inlets. The car you see here rides on handsome 18-inch Sabre two-tone alloy wheels.

The interior has also been comprehensively overhauled, with a far more modern dashboard sporting trapezoidal air vents and a minimalist centre console with a flat gear selector. The in-car tech consists of a seven-inch digital instrument display and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other fitted features include a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, a Qi wireless charger, MG iSmart phone app connectivity, a 360-degree camera system and six speakers. A full range of driver assists are also on board, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist and blind spot monitoring.

Under the bonnet lies a 102 PS/128 Nm 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 136 PS/250 Nm electric motor, a three-speed hybrid transmission and a 1.83 kWh battery, resulting in a total system output of 196 PS and 465 Nm of torque. So equipped, the ZS will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, all while achieving a fuel consumption figure as low as 5.1 litres per 100 km on the WLTP cycle.

With the clock running out on 2024, it’s likely the new ZS will be launched alongside the MG3 next year. There are murmurs that SAIC Motor Malaysia has plans for CKD local assembly, so could we see the car being priced competitively against the likes of the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross?

  • Toyota concept vehicles at KLIMS 2024 – FT-3e Concept, Hilux FCEV, Land Cruiser SE, Kayoibako

Toyota concept vehicles at KLIMS 2024 – FT-3e Concept, Hilux FCEV, Land Cruiser SE, Kayoibako

In addition to the variety of new products launched and previewed by Toyota in Malaysia, the Japanese brand has also brought several concept vehicles for display at the ongoing 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS).

Leading the trio of battery-electric vehicle concepts is the FT-3e Concept, first shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in October 2023. The FT-3e Concept takes on the form of an SUV with a fastback rear section,

According to Toyota, the FT-3e seats five and measures 4,860 mm long, 1,955 mm wide and 1,595 mm tall with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. This is built upon the manufacturer’s archictecture for battery-electric vehicles which have also underpinned models such as the Lexus LF-ZC as well as the FT-Se EV sports car.

This is joined by the Land Cruiser SE that brings a more conventionally square-cut, two-box SUV form. Like the FT-3e, the Land Cruiser SE concept was first unveiled at Japan Mobility 2023.

Where this one departs from convention – where the Land Cruiser name is concerned – is the use of a monocoque body construction, whereas models of the famed 4×4 nameplate have historically employed body-on-frame construction. True to Land Cruiser fashion, however, it does pack a three-row seating configuration, with styling cues from its production siblings the Land Cruiser 300 and Land Cruiser 250.

Flying the hydrogen fuel-cell flag in this BEV-majority showing among the concepts is the Hilux FCEV concept, which, as its name suggests, is a Hilux double-cab pick-up truck with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain. This draws from the manufacturer’s production hydrogen fuel-cell model, the Mirai, in the adoption of fuel cell components.

This has three hydrogen tanks located beneath the passenger cab, while the fuel-cell stack is situated in the engine bay. Electricity generated is sent to a rear axle-mounted drive motor. Joining this in the FCEV display line-up is a cut-out display of the first-generation Mirai (images in gallery below).

Rounding out the set of BEV concepts from Toyota at KLIMS 2024 is the Kayoibako concept, a battery-electric commercial van concept with a configurable interior. This takes its name from the term kayoibako, which refers to configurable shipping containers sized to reduce waste and are outfitted with changeable inserts in order to be able to meet a range of needs.

The Kayoibako measures 3,990 mm long, 1,790 mm wide and 1,855 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, and has interior dimensions of 3,127 mm in length (2,141 mm on the driver’s side), 1,485 mm in width and 1,437 mm in height.

  • Nissan Hyper Tourer concept makes Malaysian debut

Nissan Hyper Tourer concept makes Malaysian debut

This is one of the more outlandish vehicles you’ll see at the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2024. The Nissan Hyper Tourer concept was first shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, but it still looks otherworldly today.

It’s meant to be a crystal ball for an Elgrand replacement that’s fully electric. Highlights include the prominent chequered face, kumiko-patterned wheels, large spoiler and pillarless front and rear sliding doors. Embossed on the chin and the bottom of the tailgate are the words ‘Hyper Tourer’ in block letters, which reminded me of another MPV that showed up at KLIMS today.

Inside, you’ll see four seats facing each other (suggesting autonomous driving tech) and a flat LED panel in the floor that Nissan says “displays imagery of a riverbed and the sky, helping creating a relaxing space where digital and nature are fused.”

Elsewhere, there’s V2X (vehicle-to-everything) and an AI system that monitor biometric signs including brain waves, heart rate, breathing and perspiration, and automatically selects complementary music and adjusts lighting to suit the mood. Of course, this is all concept speak, and we know Nissan probably has other things to think about at the moment, but it would be really cool to see this become a reality.

New Mitsubishi Triton, Xpander genuine accessories previewed at KLIMS – bodykit, sports bar and more

Following the launch of the all-new Mitsubishi Triton and facelifted Xpander a few months ago, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is now previewing a range of genuine accessories specifically designed both models at the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS).

We’ll start with the Triton which can be had with a styling bar or sports bar, each packaged together with an under-rail bedliner. In addition to these, individual accessories showcased include a tailgate assist system, window visors, illuminated LED scuff plates, side door garnish, a spare wheel lock and door handle protectors.

As for the Xpander, the accessory line-up consists of a chrome exhaust finisher, a fuel lid cover, a model emblem for the bonnet and a tailgate spoiler. For the interior, options include a wireless charging pad and a boot tray. The display vehicle is also fitted with a bodykit that adds front and rear bumper spoilers, along with matching side skirts.

For now, MMM is merely previewing these Triton and Xpander accessories, with no official pricing being confirmed. The public are invited to KLIMS to check out the display vehicles for themselves and speak with experts on the topic of modifying Mitsubishi vehicles.

  • MG3 Hybrid+ previewed at KLIMS 2024 – B-segment hatchback with 194 PS 1.5L hybrid; 26.2 km/l; ADAS

    MG3 Hybrid+ previewed at KLIMS 2024 – B-segment hatchback with 194 PS 1.5L hybrid; 26.2 km/l; ADAS

SAIC Motor Malaysia has chosen this year’s Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) to preview the MG3 Hybrid+. Revealed globally earlier in March this year, the B-segment hatchback has already gone on sale in Thailand and was showcased at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in July.

In terms of the powertrain, the hybrid hatchback comes with a 1.5 litre Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 102 PS (101 hp or 75 kW) and 128 Nm of torque, paired with a three-speed E-AT automatic transmission.

The engine is augmented by an electric motor rated at 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW) and 250 Nm for a total system output of 194 PS (192 hp or 143 kW). With this setup, the MG3 HEV is claimed to deliver a fuel economy of 26.2 km/l.

As for features, the spec sheet lists 16-inch ‘Atlas’ alloy wheels, three regeneration modes, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, MG iSmart vehicle telematics, a wireless charging pad, leather upholstery, manual front seats with heating function, a 60:40 split-folding rear bench and a 360-degree camera.

No shortage of safety systems either, including six airbags, traction control, ABS, ESP, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, lane keep assist, lane departure warning as well as front collision warning with autonomous emergency braking.

In Thailand, the MG3 Hybrid+ is priced between 579,900 and 619,900 baht (about RM75k and RM80k), with two variants offered – the range-topper gets the suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

If the striking design holds no sway over your decision-making, would you pick the MG3 HEV over other B-segment hatchbacks such as the Honda City Hatchback, Toyota Yaris and Mazda 2? Worth noting that at 4,113 mm long, 1,797 mm wide, 1,502 mm tall and with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm, the MG hybrid hatchback is comparable in size to the competition.
