Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo – AWD, 598 PS, 150 km EV range, 1,100 km total range, Malaysia launch possible

Last week, we were invited to participate in the Omoda & Jaecoo Long Range Safari Drive competition in South Africa, taking us from Cape Town to Addo. There, we drove the new Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo a gruelling 939 km over three days, using only one full tank of petrol and a single battery charge.

The petrol-electric version of the C9 derives its Super Hybrid System (SHS) powertrain from the recently-launched Jaecoo J7 PHEV, in this case a 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, dual electric motors and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The C9, however, uses a three-speed DHT and adds a rear motor to provide all-wheel drive.

The O&J team declined to provide full specifications during the drive, only saying it will have a total system output of 598 PS and 915 Nm of torque. That’s 20 PS and 5 Nm less than its Chinese counterpart, the Exeed Yaoguang (RX) C-DM, which uses a 156 PS/220 Nm engine, a 224 PS/390 Nm front traction motor and a 238 PS/310 Nm rear motor. The export J7 PHEV’s engine is slightly less powerful at 143 PS and 215 Nm, so we can assume that’s where most of the shortfall lies.

Omoda C9 PHEV by Jaecoo – AWD, 598 PS, 150 km EV range, 1,100 km total range, Malaysia launch possible

Also mentioned was an impressive pure electric range of 150 km on the WLTP cycle, which is exactly what the Yaoguang C-DM achieves, meaning that the C9 PHEV likely uses the same 34.46 kWh CATL M3P battery. Total range is rated at 1,100 km, also on the WLTP cycle. The car can support DC fast charging at an unspecified input, with the Exeed capable of charging from 30 to 80% in 20 minutes.

On the outside, the C9 PHEV maintains the petrol model‘s sleek design, with a coupé-like roofline, distinctive “Sigma” full-width front light signature, segmented taillights and even the same 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. The only visible differences are a split front air intake, a charge port door on the passenger side and a “340E” badge. Unfortunately, the car still features fake quad tailpipes.

The C9 PHEV’s interior is also very familiar, with organic lines, a widescreen display panel with twin 12.3-inch displays, a tall centre console with cool silver air-con and drive mode knobs, and quilted leather seats. This South African tester gets a stylish brown and white colour scheme that is unlikely to make it to Malaysia given buyers’ preference for more somber hues here.

Unlike the J7 PHEV, the C9 PHEV retains the same door cards as the petrol model, meaning you still get Mercedes-Benz-style powered seat adjustment switches and (blissfully) discrete door mirror controls. Other features carried over include adaptive dampers, triple-zone climate control, an air fragrance system, a panoramic glass sunroof, a head-up display, power-reclining rear seats, a 360-degree camera system with a 3D view and a transparency function and a 14-speaker Sony sound system with headrest speakers.

A Jaecoo Malaysia representative present during the drive told us that the Omoda C9 PHEV could be coming to our market, although a launch timeline has not been set. In case you were wondering, the Malaysian team including yours truly took first place during the drive with an effective range of 1,190 km (939 km driven, plus 251 km of range remaining), beating out the South African contingent by just six kilometres.

  • 2025 Omoda C9 by Jaecoo Malaysian review – Mercedes-Benz GLC for the price of Honda CR-V?

2025 Omoda C9 by Jaecoo Malaysian review – Mercedes-Benz GLC for the price of Honda CR-V?

Launched in Malaysia in December 2024 following its preview in September that year, the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo is one of the most disruptive Chinese cars to enter the Malaysian market, priced from RM168,800 with a generous equipment specification.

By the numbers, the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – as it is sold by Jaecoo Malaysia – measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm and packs a luggage capacity of 660 litres with its rear seats in place and 1,783 litres with the seats folded.

This places the C9 in the price ballpark of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Honda CR-V, while gunning for the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, and the Toyota Harrier. The Omoda C9 undercuts the latter two on price by a long way; two variants of the C9 are on offer in Malaysia; the 2WD at RM168,800, and the AWD at RM188,800; prices for both are on-the-road without insurance.

That outlay brings a powertrain comprised of a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque, sent to the driven wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The C9 2WD gets three drive modes, while the C9 AWD gains a further four modes with emphasis on off-road driving.

It’s a generous kit list in the Omoda C9, and both 2WD and AWD variants get a Level 2.5 ADAS suite that packs adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, AEB, blind spot detection, front collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, emergency lane keeping, lane change assistant, lane departure prevention, active speed limiter, and front departure alert.

Also on are door opening warning, automatic headlamps, and driver monitoring with driver fatigue warning. Active safety features include ABS, ESP, brake assist, EBD, traction control, hill hold, hill start assist, hill descent control, multi-collision brake, tyre pressure monitoring and speed limit reminder. On the passive safety front, the C9 gets eight airbags.

That said, the Omoda C9 isn’t perfect. Our man, Hafriz Shah goes through what’s good, and what’s bad about the locally assembled (CKD) SUV; watch the review video here.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo production begins, Jan delivery

The first unit of the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo has rolled off the assembly line at Jaecoo’s Shah Alam plant (which also assembles the Jaecoo J7), with deliveries set to begin next month.

“We are very happy with the encouraging response for our C9 premium off-road SUV coupe and ready to deliver on the Malaysian market’s demands. As a brand that is invested for the long term, we are equally dedicated to taking care of our customers throughout their ownership journey with us,” said Jaecoo Malaysia VP Emily Lek.

“Looking ahead, Jaecoo continues to keep our finger on the pulse to ensure we deliver best-in-class vehicles and services that suit the market’s current needs,” she added.

Launched last week, the Omoda C9 is priced at RM168,800 (2WD) and RM188,800 (AWD). Sold by Jaecoo, it’s got a 261 PS/400 Nm 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed auto, and is about the size of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Leapmotor C10 and Toyota Harrier. • Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – D-segment coupé SUV launched in Malaysia, 2WD and AWD; fr RM169k OTR

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – D-segment coupé SUV launched in Malaysia, 2WD and AWD; fr RM169k OTR

Following the preview of the Omoda C9 SUV in September, it is now finally the official launch for the D-segment SUV under the Jaecoo brand, and this is priced at RM168,800 for the 2WD, and RM188,800 for the AWD; prices are on-the-road without insurance.

The early bird promotion for the C9 includes a 10-year, one-million km warranty on engine and suspension components, in addition to the standard seven-year, 150,000 km vehicle warranty, and this promotion is applicable to bookings made for the C9 until December 8.

To recap its brand positioning – in Malaysia, Jaecoo is positioned as a premium SUV brand, and the Omoda C9 is the most premium product from the Chery group so far in Malaysia, so this is being sold by Jaecoo Malaysia.

Measuring 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, the C9 SUV has luggage capacity from 660 litres with its rear seats in place, expanding to 1,783 litres with the seats folded. Its size places it in the ballpark of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, as well as the Toyota Harrier that is possibly its closest competitor.

Omoda C9 AWD (matte grey); Omoda C9 2WD (white) – click to enlarge

Two drivetrain variants for the C9 are on offer – 2WD and AWD, both featuring the 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine that outputs 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Key visual identifiers for the C9 include the diamond-matrix front air intake grille, along with its ‘Sigma’ daytime running lights (DRL) signature. Headlamps are adaptive LED units, accompanied by LED tail lamps, with an auto-sensing function for the tailgate.

Underneath, the C9 chassis gets MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup at the rear, supplemented by the Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension on the AWD which is a stand-out feature for the SUV segment in this price bracket.

Wheels are 20-inch multi-spoke alloys shod in 245/50R20 tyres, with a matching full-size spare; the 2WD gets brake calipers in silver, while the AWD get calipers in red. Driveline controls for the C9 2WD variant include three drive modes, while those of the C9 AWD get an additional four modes with an off-road focus.

The AWD version adds off-road oriented drive modes (row below)

Equipment on the AWD is comprised of features such as a Tesla-style front and rear push-button electric door release system, rhythmic ambient lighting, a combined 24.6-inch screen and a 14-speaker Sony audio system that has speakers in the driver’s headrest (eight speakers on the 2WD).

Air-conditioning is a three-zone setup, adding a three-cartridge fragrance system on the AWD, where the choice of scent can be selected from the infotainment touchscreen.

Also included are ventilated front seats, a leather-trimmed dashboard, shift paddles, head-up display, eight-way powered driver’s seat with memory for six positions (six-way adjustment on the 2WD), dashcam and a 540-degree surround view camera, an electric steering column (manual on the 2WD) and double-glazed front windows. The rear occupants get seats with a power recline function, and B-pillar air-conditioning vents.

Added to the AWD variant are the front door ambient light, air-conditioning vent ambient light, adaptive front lighting system and an electronic child safety lock.

Active assistance systems are standard across both variants, and include a Level 2.5 ADAS suite. These are comprised of adaptive cruise control, integrated cruise assist, traffic jam assist, AEB, blind spot detection, front collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, emergency lane keeping, lane change assistant, lane departure prevention, active speed limiter, and front departure alert.

Other assistance functions include door opening warning, automatic headlamps, and driver monitoring with driver fatigue warning. Active safety features include ABS, ESP, brake assist, EBD, traction control, hill hold, hill start assist, hill descent control, multi-collision brake, tyre pressure monitoring and speed limit reminder. On the passive safety front, the C9 gets eight airbags.

The Omoda C9 is covered by a seven-year, 150,000 km warranty. Exterior colours are Carbon Crystal Black, Khaki White and a matte grey paint finish, the latter the first for a locally assembled vehicle in Malaysia (the C9 is assembled at Chery’s Shah Alam plant). Customer vehicle deliveries will commence in January 2025, says Jaecoo Malaysia.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo launching in Malaysia Dec 6

After plenty of teasers, Jaecoo Malaysia has announced that the Omoda C9 will be launched in exactly a week’s time on December 6. That means the five-seater premium SUV will miss some of the hubbub created by the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) happening concurrently, but it will also give the car some space of its own.

The second of the company’s models to be launched in Malaysia after the popular Jaecoo J7, the C9 is the first Omoda model to be marketed separately from the main Chery brand. As previously reported, the car will be locally assembled in the Jaecoo plant in Shah Alam, with deliveries of the AWD variant set to kick off the following month in January 2025.

The 2WD version will take quite a bit longer, only reaching customers’ hands in May or June. Prices will start from an estimated RM185,000 for the 2WD model, rising up to RM195,000 with all-wheel drive.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo launching in Malaysia Dec 6

Known as the Exeed RX in China, the C9 is powered by the same 2.0 litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder petrol engine as the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, here uprated to produce 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Also differing from its more humdrum seven-seater sibling is an eight-speed automatic gearbox instead of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Underlining its status as a premium vehicle, the C9 will be fitted as standard with adaptive dampers – virtually unheard of under RM200,000. It will roll on 20-inch two-tone multi-spoke alloy wheels shod with 245/50-section Michelin e-Primacy tyres, replete with a full-size spare. The car also boasts a modest 165 mm of ground clearance but a rather more impressive 450 mm maximum water wading depth.

The C9 is the most upmarket model offered by the wider Chery Auto Malaysia group, so it’s no surprise it’s also the largest. Measuring 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,671 mm tall, the car is 53 mm longer, 60 mm wider and 34 mm lower (befitting its “coupé” designation) than the D-segment Tiggo 8 Pro, while its 2,800 mm wheelbase is a whole 90 mm longer.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo launching in Malaysia Dec 6

It’s a big car for sure, and its mildly recognisable Omoda design language gives it plenty of road presence. Like the electric E5, the C9’s slim LED headlights (featuring cool segmented L-shaped daytime running lights) are joined by a strip with the Omoda badge, while its diamond-pattern grille has since been added to the facelifted Omoda 5.

The car’s considerable length is emphasised by the long shoulder line that stretches from the headlights to the full-width taillights, accentuated by a chrome front fender appliqué. Further evidence of the C9’s upmarket bent are the flush pop-out door handles and blacked-out D-pillars, giving it a “floating roof” look. The rear end is finished off by vertical reflectors and quad tailpipes.

The classy look continues on the inside, where the C9 houses a broad dashboard with full-width air vents and a widescreen display panel with twin 12.3-inch screens. Oodles of soft-touch leather trim adorns the dash, door cards and seats, featuring a quilted stitch pattern in places.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo launching in Malaysia Dec 6

Particular attention has been paid to the centre console, which features stylish silver air-con and drive mode selector knobs (a far cry from the J7, which relegates the climate control functions to the touchscreen) nestled within a cool rectangular trim piece. This is also where you’ll find twin smartphone holders – one incorporating a 50-watt Qi wireless charger – and a roller top-covered storage bin.

The exhaustive list of standard kit includes keyless entry, push-button start, triple-zone climate control (including rear controls, again rare for this price), an air fragrance system, a panoramic glass roof, a head-up display, front double glazing, power-adjustable seats with memory and ventilation, a dash cam, power-reclining rear seats, a 360-degree camera system with a transparency function and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.

The AWD model adds powered steering column and driver’s seat squab adjustment, as well as seven off-road drive modes compared to the 2WD’s three. All models come standard with eight airbags and a full suite of driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, lane change assist, blind spot warning, a driver attention monitor and a door opening warning.

  • Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – ‘SUV coupe’ launching next month, AWD deliveries in Jan 2025, 2WD in May/June

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – ‘SUV coupe’ launching next month, AWD deliveries in Jan 2025, 2WD in May/June

Jaecoo Malaysia, which is gearing up for its second model launch in our market, has revealed the full timeline for the Omoda C9 rollout. The ‘off-road SUV coupe’ will be officially launched in December (yes, that’s next month, time flies!).

Deliveries of the Omoda C9 – which is CKD locally assembled at Chery’s Shah Alam plant – will start in January 2025 for the AWD model. Those who are going for the 2WD will have to wait a little longer, as deliveries of the front-wheel-drive variant is scheduled for May/June 2025. The C9 is open for booking at an estimated price of RM185,000 for the 2WD and RM195,000 for the AWD.

If you were among the crowd at 1 Utama last week for the C9’s public preview (5,000 visitors, Jaecoo Malaysia says), you’d know that the C9 is a big car. At 4,775 mm long and 1,920 mm wide, its footprint is 53 mm longer and 60 mm wider than the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which is a D-segment seven-seater SUV.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – ‘SUV coupe’ launching next month, AWD deliveries in Jan 2025, 2WD in May/June

Also, this big five-seater’s 2,800 mm wheelbase is nearly 100 mm (90 mm) longer than the Tiggo 8’s. Longer and wider, but lower (-34 mm), giving it muscular proportions. Boot space is a generous 660 litres, expandable to 1,783 litres with the rear seats folded.

Under that wide hood lies a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine producing 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Drive goes to the front (2WD), or all four wheels in the AWD version, via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. In China, this car is called the Exeed RX and the same engine has 249 PS/385 Nm and is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox driving the front wheels. The Exeed also has a 1.5T plug-in hybrid variant, by the way.

While the C9’s front MacPherson struts and real multi-links are common, the Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension isn’t for an SUV below RM200k. At each corner are 20-inch multi-spoke alloys wrapped with 245/50 Michelin e-Primacy tyres (matching spare wheel and tyre). The C9 2WD gets the usual three drive modes while the AWD comes with four extra off-road-flavoured modes.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – ‘SUV coupe’ launching next month, AWD deliveries in Jan 2025, 2WD in May/June

There’s a lengthy list of equipment on this upmarket model. You’ll get things like a Tesla-style push-button door release system, rhythmic ambient lighting, a combined 24.6-inch screen and a 14-speaker Sony audio system that has speakers in the driver’s headrest. The air con is a three-zone system with a three-cartridge fragrance system. Choose the scent you want from the big touchscreen. Rear occupants get B-pillar vents in addition to the central vents.

Also on are air ventilated front seats, a leather-trimmed dashboard, shift paddles, head-up display, eight-way powered driver’s seat with memory for six positions, dashcam and a 540-degree surround view camera. The rear seats have a power recline function. There’s also an electric steering column and double-glazed front windows.

Safety wise, the C9 gets eight airbags and a ‘Level 2.5’ ADAS suite with blind spot detection, door opening warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane change assist and emergency lane keep assist, along with a driver monitoring system, among other things. The C9 could very well be the best-equipped sub-RM200k car in Malaysia.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo – ‘SUV coupe’ launching next month, AWD deliveries in Jan 2025, 2WD in May/June

Besides black and white, the Omoda C9 will also be offered with a stealthy matte grey paint option (RM3,000 extra), which is a first for a CKD car.

“We are very happy to receive such positive interest for the C9 from the public. Our product strategy is always supported by market research which empowers us to deliver the right offerings that meet customer needs. We believe the C9 fits seamlessly into the Jaecoo premium brand DNA with its off-road capabilities that are ideal for urban and outdoor adventures,” said Jaecoo Malaysia vice president Emily Lek.

If you missed the C9’s public debut at 1 Utama, you can check out the Chery group’s most premium product so far in Malaysia at Desa Parkcity’s Plaza Arkadia carpark this weekend, October 9-10. If you’re wondering why is an Omoda sold by Jaecoo, and why is the Omoda name on the car, but not displayed at the event (C9 by Jaecoo), we explain the family dynamics here.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo on public preview at 1 Utama – ‘off-road SUV coupe’, 2.0T 261 PS/400 Nm, fr RM185k

We’re at the public preview event of the Omoda C9, by Jaecoo Malaysia. Where’s Chery in the picture? Here’s an explanation before we proceed – both Omoda and Jaecoo are brands under Chery, and the more trendy/upmarket duo are meant to be sold under one roof, away from the more traditional namesake Chery brand.

Malaysia is an exception, though. Chery started its journey in our market with the Omoda 5 before Jaecoo was established here. Jaecoo is positioned as a premium SUV brand, and the Omoda C9 is the most premium product from the Chery group so far in Malaysia, so it’s being sold by Jaecoo Malaysia.

The event setup at 1 Utama has ‘C9 from Jaecoo’ branding, without ‘Omoda’ although there’s no change on the car, which is still an Omoda C9 with matching logos.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo on public preview at 1 Utama – ‘off-road SUV coupe’, 2.0T 261 PS/400 Nm, fr RM185k

According to Jaecoo Malaysia vice president Emily Lek, the branding decision is to simplify the customer journey and reduce confusion, emphasising that the C9 is sold by Jaecoo Malaysia and its dealerships. This more upmarket image and approach is on display at 1 Utama’s new wing from today till Sunday.

What’s the Omoda C9, you ask. Jaecoo is calling it a ‘premium off-road SUV coupe’ and it’s quite a big car. At 4,775 mm long and 1,920 mm wide, the C9’s footprint is 53 mm longer and 60 mm wider than the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, which is a D-segment seven-seater SUV.

Omoda C9 by Jaecoo on public preview at 1 Utama – ‘off-road SUV coupe’, 2.0T 261 PS/400 Nm, fr RM185k

Like the Omoda E5 EV, the C9 has the Omoda script on its nose, which sits above a diamond-matrix front air intake grille. Other highlights include ‘Sigma’ daytime running lights that run vertically on the edges of the C9’s face, flush door handles. There are adaptive LED headlamps in front and a full-width LED strip at the back, on the auto-sensing tailgate. What do you think of the C9’s design?

Under that wide hood lies a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine producing 261 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Drive goes to the front (FWD), or all four wheels in the AWD version, via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Omoda C9 coupé SUV previewed in Malaysia – sold by Jaecoo; 261 PS/400 Nm 2.0L turbo SUV from RM185k

The Omoda C9 SUV has been previewed today in Malaysia ahead of its market launch that will take place in December this year, coming to market as a locally assembled (CKD) model.

Given its D-segment SUV positioning, the Omoda C9 measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, and luggage capacity is from 660 litres to 1,783 litres. This makes the C9 larger than the Honda CR-V, and measures closer to the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, as well as the Toyota Harrier that is possibly its closest competitor.

Visually, the Omoda C9 is identified by its diamond-matrix front air intake grille, along with its ‘Sigma’ daytime running lights (DRL) signature, and its doors get pop-out handles. Lighting is by LEDs for the adaptive headlamps and LED tail lamps, and the tailgate gets an auto-sensing function.

The Omoda C9 will be offered in Malaysia in 2WD and AWD forms. Powertrain for the Omoda C9 is by a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine producing 261 PS (257 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, driving the front, or all four wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

In China, the Omoda C9 is sold as the Exeed RX that gets the same engine rated for 249 PS and 385 Nm, driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. This is also sold in China as a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 litre turbo petrol inline-four cylinder, and this gets paired with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

Ground clearance for the C9 is 165 mm, enabling a water wading depth of up to 450 mm. Rolling stock is a set of 20-inch alloy wheels shod in 245/50R20 Michelin e-Primacy tyres, with suspension by MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup at the rear. It gets Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension all-around too, which is a first in this price range. The C9 2WD gets three drive modes while the AWD variant gets seven drive modes for added off-road capability.

Driver assistance systems offered in the C9 brings a claimed Level 2.5 ADAS suite, comprised of blind spot detection, door opening warning, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane change assist and emergency lane keep assist, along with a driver monitoring system. On the passive safety front, the Omoda C9 gets eight airbags.

Inside, the Omoda C9 gets a push-button door release system such as those found on Tesla vehicles. Interior equipment for the C9 includes ambient lighting of the active rhythmatic variety, with a combined 24.6-inch HD display panel, and audio is a 14-speaker setup by Sony, including speakers in the driver’s headrest.

Air-conditioning is a three-zone configuration that features B-pillar vents for the second row, and includes fragrance that employs a proprietary cartridge system that holds up to three scents which can be selected via the infotainment touchscreen. Meanwhile, the front seats get ventilation and the console and dashboard are trimmed in soft-touch leather.

The multi-function steering wheel gets shift paddles, and the dashboard also gets a head-up display. Further equipment includes an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory for six positions, a built-in digital video recorder (DVR) and a 540-degree surround view camera suite. At the rear, the second-row seats get electrically-powered reclining.

In addition to the exterior colours displayed here, the Omoda C9 is also offered in a matte grey exterior paint finish. This will be the first matte paint finish offered on a locally assembled vehicle in Malaysia. Estimated pricing for the Omoda C9 starts from RM185,000 for the C9 2WD, and RM195,000 for the C9 AWD, and registrations of interest for the coupé-SUV have been opened.

Rather confusingly, while the Omoda 5 is sold via Chery dealerships, the Omoda C9 is positioned further upmarket and thus is marketed under the Jaecoo banner. So, sales and servicing of the Omoda C9 will be carried out at dedicated Jaecoo dealerships in Malaysia.

Omoda C9 to be previewed in Malaysia via livestream on Facebook and Instagram at 10.30am today

The Omoda C9 will be previewed in Malaysia via a livestream scheduled for today at 10.30am, according to a social media post by Jaecoo Malaysia. This comes after the SUV, which is also known as the Exeed RX or Yaoguang, was teased just a few days ago.

UPDATE: The Omoda C9 has been officially previewed in Malaysia and you can read all about it here.

Curiously, the latest post (particularly the one on Instagram) isn’t a collaborative effort with Omoda Malaysia’s account (@omodamalaysia), which appears to be not available. It was presumed that Omoda and Jaecoo (collectively known as “O&J”) would follow the same approach seen in other markets, where both brands share the same dealers separate from Chery.

The C9 is a five-seat, midsize SUV that is underpinned by the M3X platform and is about the size of the Proton X90 and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. It is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels.

In China, its close sibling, the RX, is rated at 261 PS (257 hp or 192 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission also available. There’s even a plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine, a front electric motor and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). As an option, a version of the PHEV system with an additional rear motor is offered for a total output of 619 PS (610 hp or 455 kW) and 920 Nm.

The Omoda C9 has been earmarked for Malaysia when we reported on it last October. It is one of three models planned for our market, with others being the Jaecoo J7 and J8, the former already on sale here and the latter previewed earlier this year. We’ll have wait till the livestream to see what sort of specs and equipment comes standard on the C9. Stay tuned for updates.

Omoda C9 SUV teased ahead of launch in Malaysia

The Omoda C9 has been teased for Malaysia ahead of a local launch set to take place soon, according to a recent collaborative post by Jaceoo Malaysia and the newly set up Omoda Malaysia.

UPDATE: The Omoda C9 has been previewed in Malaysia and registrations of interest have been opened; read more, here.

Omoda and Jaecoo (collectively known as “O&J”) are marketed outside China to support Chery’s export strategy. In most markets, O&J vehicles share the same dealers separate from Chery, and it looks like Malaysia will follow suit.

It’s already known Jaecoo is marketed as completely separate brand from Chery in Malaysia with no shared resources with existing showrooms and service centres. However, if the O&J strategy applies here, Omoda and Jaecoo models will be sold in the same showrooms.

We already have Omoda cars on sale here here in the form of the Omoda 5 and E5, and from what we’ve heard, these models will continue to be kept under Chery Malaysia, which also sells the Tiggo range.

On the vehicle being teased, the Omoda C9, which is also known as the Exeed RX or Yaoguang), is a five-seat, midsize SUV built on the M3X platform. First revealed in February last year, the C9 measures 4,775 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, 1,671 mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2,800 mm. With those dimensions, the C9 is larger than the Honda CR-V we have here and comparable to the Proton X90 and Tiggo 8 Pro in terms of size.

The C9 features a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. Referring to the Exeed RX sold in China, the engine makes 261 PS (257 hp or 192 kW) and 400 Nm of torque, with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission also offered.

The Exeed RX can also be had with a plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.5 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). The PHEV system also includes a front electric motor or an additional rear motor for a total system output of up to 619 PS (610 hp or 455 kW) and 920 Nm.

The Omoda C9 has been earmarked for Malaysia when we reported on it last October. It is one of three models planned for our market, with others being the Jaecoo J7 and J8, the former already on sale here and the latter previewed earlier this year.
