All 3 teaser videos for MINI’s Frankfurt exhibits

MINI Two Untamed

Okay, after watching the three teaser videos of MINI’s Frankfurt exhibits I think what they’re trying to say is that there’ll be two takes on the same car at Frankfurt. We’ve already seen the MINI Coupe Concept in full but word is that there will also be a drop top version called the MINI Roadster Concept there, which frankly I don’t see how will be very different from a MINI Cabriolet with the JCW upgrade pack other than the fact that there will be no rear seats. But maybe BMW has some surprises in store – for now watch all three teaser videos after the jump.

BMW celebrates 10 years of the BMW “SAV” with the X5 xDrive35d 10-Year Edition

BMW X5 10-Year

It’s been 10 years since BMW have been making SUVs (they insist that they’re SAVs), so that means they’ve also held off making an “M” SUV for 10 years now. That’s a long time to wait for an itch to be scratched for their finance department – of course massively high powered SUVs will sell, there’s always the Middle East remember?

To me I think the X5-M an X6-M is already good as a celebration of 10 years of the BMW SUV. After all, it’s basically Munich shoving the middle finger to the law of physics – technologies such as Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Drive active anti-rollbars do wonders to such lumbering hulks and turn them into vehicles that are surprisingly apt at tackling the bends for their size and weight.

BMW X5 10-Year

But of course which finance department would pass off the chance to produce yet another special edition vehicle so here is the BMW X5 xDrive35d 10-Year Edition. The default paint for this special edition is Sophisto Grey, which kind of looks like Sparkling Graphite but with a a kind of slight brownish tinge to it instead of the slightly purple colour that Sparkling Graphite has. You’ve got 20 inch Y-spoke wheels, Matt Aluminium exterior trim and roof rails, and a panoramic sunroof.

On the interior, you get Comfort seats, Anthracite headliners, Carrara Shades Nappa leather, and BMW Individual Piano Black interior trim. To remind you that this is a special edition plaques with the wording ‘10-Year’ are fixed onto the front doors, front door sill plates, and to the dashboard.

BMW now has a total of four X models – the X1, X3, X5 and X6. The X1 will be coming sometime next year, and the X3’s replacement model will grow in size to be somewhere in between the new X1 and the soon to be facelifted X5.

MINI Frankfurt Exhibits – Teaser Video #1

BMW’s MINI division released the video above just a few hours ago and its supposed to be a teaser for the brand’s 2009 Frankfurt show exhibits.

From what we know so far, two cars are going to be exhibited, with one being the MINI Coupe Concept. The other is said to be a MINI SUV that’s much closer to production (or perhaps even a production car) compared to the MINI Crossover Concept from last year.

Anyway, more teaser videos will be coming up, building up momentum towards the actual Frankfurt show. I’ll post other teasers up as they are released.

Confirmed: MINI range to get two new models

MINI Coupe Concept

BMW’s chairman Dr Norbert Reithofer have confirmed today that two new MINI models will go into production at UK’s Plant Oxford, including the Frankfurt show’s MINI Coupe Concept. This ends speculation as to whether the MINI Coupe Concept will be produced or not. Previously other senior BMW officials have said that the concept will be built if public response at the motorshow was good but I think these days with the internet and social media you can already gauge such responses before the public sees a car.

MINI Crossover Concept

The announcement today also had another surprise – apparently a second car that will be unveiled at Frankfurt will also go into production. I have a feeling this is the MINI SUV based on the MINI Crossover Concept showcased last year. This will give the MINI brand a total of 5 bodystyles – Hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Coupe and Crossover.

Two more videos of the BMW Vision ED Concept

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept
I guess she overestimated how far the EV mode would take her…

Two new video clips on BMW’s new Vision EfficientDynamics Frankfurt showcar have been released by the boys at Munich, making it a total of three videos now if you include the first one. One is 3 minute long video while the second one is a short 3D teaser of just under a minute long. I’ve also added the first video in case you missed it, so head on after the jump where you will find all three videos. You can also check out my previous post on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept car to read more on BMW’s new turbodiesel-hybrid sports car concept.

Diesel-electric powered 2009 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept officially unveiled!

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

And here we have it, BMW’s secretive concept car with the radical rear tail lamps set for its Frankfurt showcase unveiled before the show – the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. If you’ve been following the motoring scene closely you’ll remember back in early 2008 there was another concept car with the exact same name but with a much less radical body. Come to think of it the design was probably inspired by the GINA concept. 2008’s Vision EfficientDynamics Concept was built using the body of an X5 but featured a 2.0 liter twin turbodiesel (from the 123d) with 204hp mated to a 15kW electric motor.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

For this new vehicle, you can see its clearly a sports car, a 2+2 seater to be exact. It’s very aerodynamic, rated at 0.22 for its CX drag coefficient. The car’s 0.22 figure for its aerodynamics were achieved using various methods. At the front, you have active air flaps which channel only the required amount of air smoothly into the car. A number of body elements are used as air deflectors and guide vanes, like the A-pillar. The underbody is completely covered with a smooth surface.

BMW says this car’s development concept was to offer the performance of a BMW M Car and a highly emotional character combined with the fuel economy and emission management of a modern small car in the premium class. Make no mistake, it’s a hint that future M cars might have KERS-like hybrid electric motors for power assist.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

Under the hood of the new BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is something very interesting. It’s BMW’s first modern three-cylinder engine in a long time – a 1.5 liter inline-3, mated to two electric motors, one each on the front and rear axle. It is mounted in a mid-engine position behind the rear seats and puts out 163hp and 290Nm of torque by itself, and is mated to a 6-speed twin clutch transmission with its TCU tuned for fuel economy (other twin clutch previously announced by BMW have been 7-speed). Overall system output – 356hp and a massive 800Nm of torque.

0 to 100km/h takes 4.8 seconds and the car goes up to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. EU test cycle fuel consumption is rated at 3.76 liters per 100km, and CO2 output is pegged at just 99g/km. BMW says it can go up to 700km or just 650km on the diesel motor alone.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

The rear motor sits between the turbodiesel and its twin clutch transmission, while the front motor stands on its own and puts its drive through a two stage single speed reduced ratio transmission. It puts out 60kW on its own with a peak torque of 220Nm but can boost this up to 84kW for up to 30 seconds and even up to 104kW in 10 seconds.

The rear motor makes more torque – 290Nm but less power at 25kW constant to a peak of 38kW. The rear motor also performs the brake energy regeneration functions. The exhaust system even has a Thermo-Electric Generator which scavenges exhaust gas heat to generate power – up to 200 watts in this instance.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

The Vision EfficientDynamics can run on electric power alone for about 50km – an EV mode as people usually call it. And the 10.8kWh (80% discharged capacity) lithium polymer batteries (98 cells) on-board can be recharged via your wall socket, not just through brake energy regeneration. When plugged in, a full charge can be done in 2.5 hours with a regular 220V wall plug, or down to 44 minutes at most with a 380V quick charger.

I like how BMW is honest in saying EV mode emissions are rated at about 50g/km when you take into account how the electricity that you pump in from the grid is generated typically in Europe. The rest of the manufacturers claim completely zero emissions – of course there are emissions, just not from your tailpipe.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

You’re going to have trouble finding tyres for this guy though, the size is quite weird. 195/55R21. The whole chassis and suspension are made out of aluminium while the roof and outer skin of the doors are made out of a special polycarbonate glass which have a darkening function when there is excessive light. Weight is pegged at just 1,395kg with a low centre of gravity. The Vision ED measures 4,600mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,240mm in height. Maximum luggage capacity is 150kg, which BMW says the shape and size is enough for 2 golf bags.

Look after the jump for hi-res images of the new Vision ED. Also check out the video which reveals alot more about how the Vision ED looks like especially at night, and how the front flaps move – this isn’t found in the photo gallery.

VIDEO: MINI Coupe Concept Beauty Shots

MINI Coupe Concept

Here’s some beauty footage of the MINI Coupe Concept’s exterior and interior that BMW typically produces for publications to slice up and use in their videos. You don’t really get to see the car in much action, but in typically quirky MINI style there’s bound to be a promo video of it later depicting the Coupe Concept actually driven by people that are as fun (and overdressed) as their car looks.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept teaser

The future is one where engines have not just been downsized but completely eliminated, or at least that’s the prophecy that the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics makes. The Frankfurt-bound concept has been teaser in this new video from BMW. It’s a bumper-view of the concept car racing down some green B-roads and guess what – no engine noise. It’s definitely a really powerful electric car of sorts, not sure if it will be powered by plug-in chargeable batteries or hydrogen fuel cell. But the sight of the bizarre tail lamps above makes the question of how this new concept will look like an equally big questions as what it’s powered by. Watch the video after the jump.

VIDEO: MINI 50th birthday celebration song

MINI Birthday

MINI is officially 50 years and 1 day old today, and BMW AG celebrated the MINI brand’s “birthday” yesterday with a celebration video that you will find after the jump. And of course their other present to the brand would be the new MINI Coupe Concept. In your opinion, do you consider MINI a continuation of the old school Mini? Or something completely new altogether that’s only a few years old now? Is MINI 50 years old or is Mini 50 years old? Share your thoughts in the comments.

MINI Coupe Concept to debut at Frankfurt 2009

MINI Coupe Concept

I was undecided at first what to think of this. My first instict was to exclaim “what’s wrong with them?” but then I had another look and thought, hey, this isn’t really that bad. What came to mind is a German take on the Suzuki Cappucino or Daihatsu Copen with a British badge. Maybe MINI got pissed off that Daihatsu ripped off the MINI with the Mira Gino, so it did the same with the Copen :P For some reason it also looks like its top is supposed to come off like a targa top or something but it’s actually a normal coupe with a fixed roof.

Don’t be fooled by the name MINI Coupe Concept – this baby is definitely going into production, looking at how ‘ready’ it is, as with every other concept car BMW has unveiled in the past year. You’ll struggle to point out any major difference between the production 5-Series GT and its concept.

MINI Coupe Concept

The MINI Coupe Concept is a two-seater – with that sloping rear roof, both legroom and headroom for the area behind the front seats are compromised so MINI cannot pretend its a 2+2 anymore, like with the MINI Cooper. Other than rear wheel drive, like any other car that BMW makes, they claim the Coupe Concept has perfect axle load distribution and a low gentre of gravity, but BMW boldly claims the Coupe Concept will take the agility typical of a MINI to a level never seen before.

The concept measures 3,715mm long, 1,683mm wide, and 1,356mm tall. The rear tailgate opens upwards to unveil a 250 liter boot space. Under the hood is a 1.6 liter turbocharged Prince engine carried over straight from the MINI John Cooper Works, and this means 211hpand 260Nm of torque, with a 280Nm overboost.

I think the MINI’s design team has got one of the toughest jobs in the BMW Group now. BMW’s designers have always followed this simple rule: revolution, then evolution, and repeat. The original New MINI was clearly a revolution of the old school MINI and then the second generation R56 MINI Cooper was an evolution of the first new MINI. Soon it will be time for another revolution, and how do you do that with a car that has so much of its identity ingrained in its looks?

Look after the jump for a hi-res photo gallery.
