Volkswagen Golf R Mk7 – teaser image surfaces

A teaser image of the Volkswagen Golf R Mk7 has surfaced – not much to see from the darkened face shot, which has the words “R Comes” in German and a 300 PS tag. The hot hatch – caught testing on the ‘Ring as late as June – is expected to make its premiere at the upcoming Frankfurt show next month.

Like the outgoing Mk6 R incarnation, the 4MOTION-equipped Mk7 R will be equipped with an EA888 2.0 litre turbo mill as seen on the Audi S3, in which it develops 300 PS and 380 Nm of torque.

Aided by the MQB platform and the latest iteration of the Haldex all-wheel drive system, the new Golf R will be a lighter proposition than the current car. It’s also rumoured to have a meatier exhaust note compared to its predecessor – shades of a return to that from the Mk5 R32 then?

Reports also intimated that an updated version of the GTI‘s optional electronically-operated mechanical front limited-slip diff might find its way on, as will a specially-developed electronic stability system, which can be deactivated.

It’s about time they lighten the Golf R. The Mk6 Golf R is, and feels heavy with the AWD, making it feel like a GT sports hatch. Exhaust note wise, i like the one in the Scirocco R, raspy with bass. Didn’t expect much from the iroc R, but after driving both, i like it more than the Golf R.

So in the past few years we had the Megane RS, the Focus ST, the FD2R (demised), Golf R and Iroc R, Mazda MPS and the 86. Which one tickled your fancy most?

Dear Anthony correction to the engine, the mk6 golf R uses a modified variant of the EA113 engine not the ea888 which featured in the mk6 golf gti
