New Mazda CX-5 spotted in Malaysia ahead of launch

The second-generation Mazda CX-5 has been spotted in Malaysia, ahead of its expected launch debut in September. The model has already been introduced in neighbouring markets such as the Philippines and Singapore, while dealers here have begun announcing the model’s arrival.

In these photos sent to us by paultan.org reader Alan Ong, we see the new CX-5 wearing what is likely the Meteor Grey exterior body colour and 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. It’s hard to determine the exact variant, but based on the left-side badging at the rear, this could be a front-wheel drive model (the right side is for the SkyActiv badge).

The CX-5 retains the same engine line-up as its predecessor – 2.0 and 2.5 litre SkyActiv-G petrol engines as well as a sole 2.2 litre SkyActiv-D diesel – and these offerings will likely be offered on the Malaysian-spec model as well.

New Mazda CX-5 spotted in Malaysia ahead of launch

Back in April, during the launch of the G-Vectoring Control-equipped models, Bermaz CEO Datuk Seri Ben Yeoh noted the new CX-5 will be a locally-assembled (CKD) model from the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah (same place where the first-gen CX-5 is assembled).

When the CX-5 finally makes its debut, the obvious competitor will be Honda’s latest CR-V, which comes with a pretty comprehensive safety suite in its highest specification. Which of the two popular models tickles your fancy more? Or will you prefer other options instead?

I really hope 2wd SUVs do not become a trend.

      • Sad to see that that more automakers are ditching AWD/4WD for SUVs. Its the equivalent of neutering your pets.

4WD or AWD are on-demand systems. In normal driving conditions, you’ll be using FWD most of the time. No point carrying additional weight for the rear and center differentials, easily 50-60kg. They’re good on slippery conditions; snow, sand. Almost useless on normal tarmac. Even if you can engage 4WD Lock, which most models do not have, the vehicle will not distribute power 50-50 to the front and rear wheels all the time. Don’t believe the hype that they’re better than FWD. And don’t compare to 4×4, totally different story.

This CX-5 design is way sportier than CRV! Just not sure how Mazda can compete with Honda turbo engine? The road tax is rm700 cheaper for 2.5l performance plus Honda has Honda Sensing…

  • This will be head to head with a new CRV. but Honda sensing vs SkyActiv tech, look like Honda has advantage.

  • Actually is 3 units on test drive. Grey (x2), Red (x1). The actual Red color painted out from Inokom Kulim Mazda Painting Facilities is NOT the Soul Red Metallic or the revolution Soul Red Crystal –> Its a lousy DARKER RED that totally disappointed. The cap. exp. approved by Mazda Malaysia Top Management is limited to build 3 layers of Soul Red painting, the $$$ only enough for building 2 layer painting workshop, now somemore the RED Color code is lousy Red.
