  • Malaysia market to get X-Wedge trikes in near future

Malaysia market to get X-Wedge trikes in near future

Set to debut in Malaysia in the near future is the X-Wedge range of trikes, imported by local distributors MForce Bike Holdings. A new brand from China, founded in 2023, the X-Wedge is a joint venture production between Kiska – the designer for motorcycles from brands such as KTM, Husqvarna, CFMoto and others – and the Huansong Industrial Group, manufacturer of aftermarket engine parts for Harley-Davidson.

This goes some way to explaining the close resemblance of the X-Wedge to Harley-Davdison’s range of three-wheeled motorcycles, or trikes. However, X-Wedge goes one better by offering two trike configurations – either two wheels front or two wheels rear.

Malaysia market to get X-Wedge trikes in near future

The front wheel trike is dubbed the Walker WR1000 and bears a strong resemblance to the Can-Am Spyder which was previously sold in Malaysia. Engine capacity is listed at 976 cc and the specifications sheet lists power out as 80 PS with 80 Nm of torque.

Riding conveniences include TFT-LCD instrument panel, traction control and smart key system. Notably, the Walker WR1000 comes with hand shifting for gear changes.

Malaysia market to get X-Wedge trikes in near future

Meanwhile, the more conventional Vanguard VT2000 trike follows American motorcycle styling closely, with 1,979 cc V-twin producing 158 Nm of torque, with a weight of 505 kg. Similarity in design to a Harley-Davidson product continues to the cockpit, engine fittings and switchgear.

There is also a sidecar model but this is unlikely to be brought into Malaysia due to the strict requirements imposed by JPJ. What do you think? Is there space on the road (and in your heart) for a made in China American style trike?

  • Honda files patent for electric drive motorcycle sidecar

Honda files patent for electric drive motorcycle sidecar

A patent filed by Honda indicates the Japanese motorcycle maker is researching or developing an electric motorcycle sidecar. In the patent, Honda intends to install load sensors on the supports connecting the sidecar to the motorcycle.

The sensors will feed data to a control unit located in the sidecar which then controls power to the sidecar wheel. When the rider accelerates or decelerates, the sensors detect the change in power delivery.

The control unit will then activate the electric motor to balance out the driving force from the motorcycle’s rear wheel, giving an even forward motion instead of a sudden yaw in direction. Under braking, the control unit will apply the sidecar’s wheel brake, similarly to balance the motion of the motorcycle sidecar and preventing any sudden changes in direction.

Honda files patent for electric drive motorcycle sidecar

Honda’s patent drawing showing sidecar layout and location of sensors, items 172 and 174

The system also works while cornering, with power or braking applied to stabilise the motorcycle sidecar’s trajectory through the corner. For countries where driving is on the right side of the road, in a right-hand corner, the system applies braking to help negotiate the turn.

Conversely, in a left-hand turn, power is applied to the sidecar wheel to balance the motorcycle’s tendency to lean into the corner. According to the patent filing, this gives the motorcycle sidecar stable handling when cornering.

While sidecars are no longer part of mainstream traffic, Honda’s idea is intriguing as an electric motorcycle sidecar allows for much more battery space and a bigger, heavier motor. This addresses range anxiety and lack of speed, two main concerns for those wanting to adopt electric motorcycles.

  • New Triumph 1200 RS Modern Classic teased

New Triumph 1200 RS Modern Classic teased

Appearing on social media is a teaser video from Triumph Motorcycles UK for its Modern Classics range. The short video shows glimpses of a retro naked sports with a matte orange paint job and the ‘RS’ logo emblazoned on the tank.

With the exit of the Triumph Thruxton last year could this be the replacement for Triumph’s sports bike in its Modern Classic catalogue. The current model Triumph Speed Twin is priced from RM77,000 in Malaysia, going up to RM81,000 for the Stealth Edition.

From the video, the sound of a parallel-twin can be heard, along with a brief flash of the engine. Also visible are gold-anodised upside-down front forks, indicating the new Modern Classic will come with adjustable front suspension.

From the specifications sheet, the Speed Twin carries a 1,200 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin producing 100 PS and 112 Nm of torque. If this is indeed the Thruxton replacement that is due to be launched, or the model update for the Speed Twin, you can expect power numbers to be somewhat similar.

Also expect to see premium components such as Brembo brakes and Marzocchi forks, or its equivalent. Weight for the new Modern Classic will likely be around the 215 kg point with some 15-litres of fuel in the tank and 810 mm seat height.

  • 2025 Buell Super Cruiser enters the US market

2025 Buell Super Cruiser enters the US market

That other American motorcycle maker, Buell Motorcycle, enters 2025 with the Buell Super Cruiser. With deposits being taken beginning September 12, the Super Cruiser is the first cruiser under the Buell name, the company now operating under EBR Motorcycles.

Pre-orders are being taken for the Super Cruiser with its muscle cruiser styling, somewhat reminiscent of the Harley-Davidson V-Rod. Buell is targeting the young rider market segment for the Super Cruiser, with pricing listed at USD25,900 (RM112,245).

With the original range of Buell motorcycles (formerly under ownership of Harley-Davidson) featuring prominently in the naked sports and sport bikes categories, the Super Cruiser follows sports bike ethos with the fitment of 17-inch wheels, front and rear. This goes against cruiser styling trends of front wheels ranging in size from 16-inches up to 22, in fact, every size except 17-inches.

2025 Buell Super Cruiser enters the US market

Since 17-inch wheels are the de facto size for ‘performance’ motorcycles, this allows for proper tyres to be fitted, with sticky rubber. Power for the Super Cruiser comes from a Buell 1,190 cc V-twin – derived from the Rotax Helicon V-twin – which is also used for other bikes in the Buell range such as the Hammerhead 1190RX.

Buell says the engine produces 175 hp with a maximum torque of 136.94 Nm which places alongside the likes of naked sports the KTM Super Duke 1290. The Super Cruiser also comes with Buell’s signature perimeter disc brakes, where the disc is affixed to the outside of the wheel rim as opposed to the centre hub like normal bikes.

  • Is Honda planning a four-cylinder 400 cc sports bike?

Is Honda planning a four-cylinder 400 cc sports bike?

    2024 Honda CBR650R

A trademark filing with the Japanese intellectual property office seems to indicate a Honda CBR400R Four might be on the books. A four-cylinder 400 cc sportsbike is not a new thing for Honda, or Kawasaki for that matter, due to the requirements of Japanese motorcycle licensing laws.

The”CBR400R Four” trademark filed by Honda makes reference to the legendary CB750 Four of the late 1960s and early 70s. It can be argued Honda created the modern four-cylinder superbike with inline configuration with all the Japanese manufacturer following suit.

Notably, in the late 80s and early 90s, there were a series of CBR400RR and CBR250RR four-cylinder sports bikes intended for the Japan market, with model genre finding fans all over the world. With the market return of the four-cylinder small displacement sports bike in the form of the Kawasaki ZX-25R and ZX-4R, it seems Honda is not wanting to be left behind in this market segment.

Is Honda planning a four-cylinder 400 cc sports bike?

    2023 Honda CBR500R

In the 500 cc sports bike category, Honda currently has the CBR500R (last priced at RM34,499 in 2022 in Malaysia) As well as the Honda CBR650R four-cylinder (RM46,499 in Malaysia). However, the CBR500R is a two-cylinder motorcycle, something which has become common in the market of late with a variety of twins ranging in 400 cc to 660 cc in capacity, notably CFMoto and Aprilia.

What do you think? Is the return of the sub-middleweight four-cylinder Japanese sports bike something you feel will be the next trend? Leave a comment with your thoughts and opinions below.

  • UK town seeks to ban motorcycle and car ‘convoys’

UK town seeks to ban motorcycle and car ‘convoys’

A UK town council has drafted an order to ban any vehicles gathering on roads or public spaces without official permission, with failure to do so attracting a fine or fixed penalty notice of 100 pounds sterling (RM569.33). The Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is tabling a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) seeking to forbid ‘car cruising’, bike meets and group rides or gatherings of two or more vehicles.

The council says such activity has a negative impact of the well-being of residents in the town, in a Motorcycle News report. Councillor Gill Heesom said, “Residents, visitors and businesses have repeatedly told us – and Staffordshire Police – that car cruising in public places is causing them significant disruption and misery with booming music, loud exhausts, dangerous driving and wheel spinning, often late at night.”

“It’s clear that this activity is having a detrimental impact on people’s quality of life so we want to put a stop to it and a PSPO would allow us to achieve that. The council is planning to adopt the PSPO towards the end of the year but is keen to hear from residents and other stakeholders first,” said Heesom.

UK town seeks to ban motorcycle and car ‘convoys’

Approached for comment, Staffordshire police said only specific road users would be targeted. “Officers are looking to challenge those that persistently have a negative impact on our
communities, not those that are using vehicles for charity and legitimate purposes,” a spokesperson said.

In Malaysia, a recent spate of motorcyclists behaving badly on public roads and highways has been making the rounds on social media. A recent incident in Kuala Lumpur saw a ‘marshal’ blocking the path of a car to allow a motorcycle convoy to pass through.

Known colloquially as “Mat Rempits”, these motorcycle hooligans, usually minors, ride recklessly, leading to fatalities as well as inconveniencing other road users. Police crackdowns seem to have had little effect while little has been heard of a 2018 proposal to implement an anti Mat Rempit law.

  • Gojek e-hailing leaves Vietnam market after 6 years

Gojek e-hailing leaves Vietnam market after 6 years

After six years, motorcycle ride hailing and delivery service company Gojek is pulling out of the Vietnam market. Gojek’s operations in Vietnam will cease September 16, according to a Retail News Asia report.

The decision was made by parent company GoTo after an assessment of its Vietnam business. Gojek initially entered Vietnam as GoViet in 2018 before being folded into the Gojek brand in 2020.

Gojek’s Vietnam operations accounted for less than 1% of its turnover in the second quarter of 2024. This follows Gojek’s exit from the Thailand market in 2021 with the company now concentrating on Singapore and its home market of Indonesia.

Vietnam’s ride hailing market is estimated to be worth 880 million USD (RM3.8 billion) in 2024, growing to 2.16 billion USD (RM9.35 billion) by 2029, with the lion’s share going to industry leader Grab. In Malaysia, motorcycle ride hailing was first mooted in 2019 but no approvals were given by the government.

  • Kove Moto Malaysia – who are they and what is this dual-purpose motorcycle brand doing in Malaysia?

Kove Moto Malaysia – who are they and what is this dual-purpose motorcycle brand doing in Malaysia?

Seen on display at various shows and during off-road competitions locally, Kove Moto is slowly making in roads into the Malaysian dual-purpose scene. If you are asking, “who is Kove Moto and why have we not heard of this motorcycle brand before?” you would be forgiven for wondering why.

Kove Moto was established in China’s motorcycle manufacturing hub of ChongQing by former professional enduro and off road rider Zhang Xue. Making its international debut at the EICMA show in Italy, Kove is now the fourth largest domestic motorcycle brand in China in the above 300 cc market segment.

Manufacturing a range of motorcycles from the 321R naked sports to the retro scrambler style 510F, for Malaysia, Kove is focusing primarily on the dual-purpose market. This was evidenced by the 450 Rally displayed at the “Jungle to Sea” enduro in 2023, as well as participating in the recent Asia Cross Country Rally 2024 in Thailand.

Kove Moto Malaysia – who are they and what is this dual-purpose motorcycle brand doing in Malaysia?

    Kove 450 Rally

The focus of Kove Moto Malaysia is on off-road riding for the 450 model it is bringing in, with instruction from the principal to put the motorcycle through its paces in the Malaysian jungle, legendary for its lack of sympathy to dual-purpose bikes seeking to challenge the terrain. Kove Malaysia prefers to remain silent for its detailed plans for the brand in Malaysia, though paultan.org was given some hints.

This includes plans to introduce the Kove 450 formally to the Malaysia market in the latter part of 2024. Additionally, there are plans to expand the range to cover other models, “possibly next year.” paultan.org first reported on Kove back in June 2022, when the “Kove Hyper” brand name has been trademarked in Malaysia.

  • WMC 300E+ brings three-wheel EV to first responders

WMC 300E+ brings three-wheel EV to first responders

Bringing electric mobility to UK first responders is the WMC 300E+ three-wheeler electric motorcycle (e-bike). paultan.org readers might remember the WMC (White Motorcycle Concept) name from the WMC250EV, the electric world speed record motorcycle.

For the 300E+, WMC recognises first responder vehicles have different requirements from e-bikes used in the retail and personal use market segments. “Current electric motorcycles are focussed upon retail needs, but fleet customers, and particularly emergency first responders, demand high levels of availability that, due to charge times, existing solutions just can’t deliver,” says WMC founder and CEO Robert White in a The Pack report.

Getting around that problem, WMC has designed the 300E+ with a unique battery design, developed and constructed by specialist engineering company Mahle Powertrain. The Lithium Cobalt Oxide and Nickel Manganese Aluminium battery is constructed in a ‘T’ shape, conforming to the space constraints imposed by the 300E+’s three-wheel configuration.

The battery pack includes key components from Mahle Powertrain’s M³x battery module concept, with cooling methods that improve cell thermal performance and maintain consistent temperatures. With a 11.9 kWh capacity, the battery has a built-in DC-DC converter, providing a direct connection for the traction motor, charger, and 12V system of the bike.

WMC 300E+ brings three-wheel EV to first responders

This allows for quick recharging in under 15 minutes using a standard CCS charger. Despite the size of the battery pack, the design of the 300E+ provides enough under seat storage space for a single full-face helmet along with enough power for auxiliary equipment like lights, sirens, and radios.

The 300E+ boasts of a 160 km/h maximum speed with a 160 km range based on the more intensive emergency services drive cycle, translating to 200 km in normal duty cycle use. Aerodynamic design is also incorporated with the WMC300E+’s patented V-Duct, running through the middle of the motorcycle that significantly reduces drag and improves overall performance, stability, and energy consumption.
