Proton Extrema brochure shown – Proton builds SUV!

UPDATE: This was an April Fool’s 2016 post.

Wow, this is big. First, we received photos of a Proton compact crossover, a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza; now we’ve been sent in a mysterious brochure by regular contributor (and Proton Design Competition 2014 winner) Pow Ying Hern, revealing a Proton SUV! The Extrema, as it is called, is expected to be launched on April 1, 2017, after the launch of the Perdana, Persona and Saga sedans.

No details have been revealed just yet, just the photos seen here. It’s certainly a very contemporary looking vehicle, with xenon headlights with LED positioning lights, a big grille with the Proton Wings (and the new three-dimensional logo), silver skid plates and LED daytime running lights.

At the rear, there are integrated exhaust exits and neat tail lights that blend into the rear windscreen, and the car sits on 19-inch wheels. The interior is also very appealing, with brown dashboard, brown leather seats and plenty of silver trim to lend a more upmarket appearance.

Expect the Extrema to be powered by the national carmaker’s new 1.5 litre turbocharged and direct-injected TGDI engine – in its most powerful configuration, it’s projected to produce 180 hp and 250 Nm. Front- and four-wheel drive should be made available, matched to the new torque converter CVT.

A compact crossover, now an SUV – what do you guys think of Proton’s new offensive into the off-roader market? Sound off in the comments section after the jump.

Proton already got their own April Fool’s joke yesterday. Tun resigning. This alone is enough to put the company six feet under.

Better close shop Proton. Rm2.5 billion debts in 3 years and RM25 million losses every month. Tolong tutup kedai!

Regardless of today’s date… Being a late comers, P1 must make sure this car is done very right… Let starts it with something marketable first… C-segment SUV trends now is its should be able to sit 6 or 7, with competetive expended cargo space… and of course, good look!

Even today in 2016, it looks quite good and modern. Dunno why Proton never brought this in, could’ve been quite a seller.

A desperate moved to counter with the bad political torn outcome after departures of tunM.Furthermore it’s going to be launched yet another 365 days if that’s to be real true with no future last minute postponements. With or without tunM the bailout ‘saga’ will always be continues if no immediate measures in place for this bloody canser ‘money sucker’ survival.Jibby must decide now either to switch off the lifeline machine or keep feeding this worthless national treasure.Which one he chose is not wrong answer but brilliant solutions must come out to mark this historical opportunity.Kill it or keep it.

I understand that Proton is trying to survive and compete with other international brands at this time. I am proud we have our own car badge and as much as we are all concern, we are observing proton’s development very closely. It comes in the forms of ridicule, sarcasm, anger and disappointment. Regardless, even if Proton is going downhill right now, I am still going to remain supportive for Proton. It takes time and a lot of failures to actually produce better cars. I am just a bystander, I don’t do much but the least I can do is just being a still supporter.
