FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

Proton recently held an exclusive media preview for the facelifted Iriz, allowing us to get up close with the hatchback model that will continue to compete against the Perodua Myvi. As of this morning, Proton has begun order taking for the new Iriz, with a promotional fee of just RM9.99 from March 1-11, 2019.

During the preview, Proton said it sold over 50,000 units of the Iriz in five years. But of course, this pales in comparison to the Perodua Myvi – the third generation model has already hit 100,000 units in just 15 months, with more than 1.1 million units in totality (including all generations).

First up, some disclosure. the preview included a short drive around the Proton test track near its Centre of Excellence, along with us being passengers in other exercises. A full, in-depth review, this is not, but we will prepare one when we can spend more time with the Iriz after an official launch, which is said to take place sometime this month.

With that in mind, the majority of this piece will be dedicated to examine the changes that come with the facelift, of which the national carmaker says it has improved 367 items. If you’re looking for a variant-by-variant list, head over here.

The most prominent update is the exterior, where Proton appears to be integrating several family-wide design cues that were first found on its first-ever SUV, the X70. As you can see, the chrome trim on the front grille takes the shape of a bow, with a pinched off section in the middle serving to “cup” the Proton badge, which leads to the top of the headlamps.

The black grille itself is much larger than on the outgoing model, and incorporates another familiar cue, the ‘infinite weave’ pattern from the X70, albeit in small sections beneath the bow.

Other changes as far as the eyes can see include a a new bonnet and headlamps that have been lifted from the current Persona, with the latter no longer being a projector-type unit. Keep in mind that the Myvi offers LED units as standard.

Another revision on the front is a new bumper that features a wider lower intake and faux vents in the corner. The latter is where the LED daytime running lights are found, as well as a welcomed addition to the Iriz, a pair of front parking sensors that comes standard across the range.

Along the sides, the Iriz retains its familiar silhouette as before, which is made better thanks to a shark fin antenna that replaces the “tail” of the outgoing model. New 15-inch ‘rotor blade’ two-tone alloy wheels on higher-spec variants also help provide the hatchback a sportier look. On a related note, the range-topping Premium 1.6L CVT variant is the only one that comes with a black roof.

Around back, it’s hard to ignore the blacked-out portion of the tailgate with the Proton script in chrome placed on it. Such a layout can also be found on the X70, although it is in a much smaller scale compared to the bold approach on the Iriz. Speaking of which, the Iriz logo placed on the tailgate, is of a new design if you didn’t already notice.

Like the front, there’s a new bumper at the back too, and this one features a large rectangular section that houses the reflectors, more fake vents and the number plate that is now further down. Faux diffuser elements again add to the sporty nature the Iriz is trying to portray.

Moving inside, the dashboard layout is exactly the same as before, but if you look closely, you’ll notice that the trim pieces on the pillars are now in black, as is the headliner. As we’ve been told, buyers do have preference for darkened interiors, particularly the more youthful ones, hence the switch.

FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

The theme swap isn’t the only thing that’s changed here, as there’s also new analogue gauges that are larger and more legible thanks to the clearer font type, and a full-colour TFT-LCD multi-info display between them. However, Standard variants will have to make do with a more basic LCD screen in the area.

On the dash itself, Executive and Premium variants get a seven-inch, Android-based head unit with a 1024×600-pixel touchscreen, 16 GB of internal data, Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone mirroring function and as a display for the rearview camera (with dynamic lines).

However, it is the Premium variant that gets 4G connectivity (via an eSIM) and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality. This expands its feature set to include support for online navigation, music streaming, apps, OTA updates and voice command using one of Malaysia’s most recognised phrase since it was announced, “Hi Proton.” Through the phrase, you can set a destination for the navigation system and adjust media playback.

Unlike the system on the X70, you can’t use the Proton Link mobile app to check things like the vehicle’s remaining driving range, odometer, service indicator and vehicle location. This also means the remote control function to lock or unlock the doors, activate the horn and lights as well as wind all the windows up/down, is not available.

FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

As for the contact points of the car, the steering wheel is almost exactly the same before (perforated leather on the side grip areas are new), right down to the Proton logo, so is the switchgear for the manual air-conditioning. Elsewhere, the Premium version also gets a new X70-like gear lever, plus a Volvo-inspired “frameless” rear-view mirror.

The Premium also gets semi-leather seats, with the side bolsters and headrest being upholstered in leather, while the backrest and seat base are fabric. The pattern applied on the fabric pattern is an inverted version of what you’ll find in the outgoing model, with red stripes beside a centre blue one. Other variants get all-fabric seats with a diamond-like pattern instead.

Another feature exclusive to the Premium variant is the six airbags it gets compared to the two of all other variants. However, things like ABS, EBD, brake assist, ESC, traction control, Hill Hold Assist and two rear parking sensors are standard across the range. Sadly, there’s no autonomous emergency braking here.

No changes as far as engines are concerned, with a 1.3 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder VVT engine (94 hp at 5,750 rpm and 120 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm), and a 1.6 litre unit (107 hp at 5,750 rpm and 150 Nm at 4,000 rpm) being offered. The latter makes a return in Executive trim, which was removed when the Iriz got a refinement update in 2017. A five-speed manual and an improved Punch CVT are the available transmission options.

FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

The pre-facelift Iriz has already receive some tweaks in 2017, gaining new engine mountings, a new exhaust from Faurecia, a recalibration of the CVT, and more sound insulation. Therefore, mechanical updates are somewhat limited, although Proton has put in work to further refine the CVT and improve NVH levels for the facelift. Other claims include recalibrating the engine for better fuel consumption and enhanced brake performance.

Given our limited time driving the car (in Premium 1.6L CVT guise) at the test area, we can’t outright validate these claims. For now, first impressions are promising. On the high-speed track, the cabin remained quiet when driving at highway speeds, with less noise from the CVT intruding into the cabin.

According to Proton, Geely uses the same Punch CVT on a few of its models in China, so the extra countermeasures it has developed to make the CVT quieter, more responsive and natural were implemented on the Iriz as well. As a demonstration of technology transfer between the two companies, certain countermeasures that Proton have identified were also implemented in the Chinese brand’s own vehicles.

Engine noise becomes more perceptible when you’re building speed, but it’s more humdrum rather than being a screamer. Similarly, tyre and wind noise begin to rear their heads at much higher speeds. Another new addition we’ve been told is a dynamic damper to help reduce vibrations felt through the steering wheel and pedals.

FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

As we discovered in our previous Driven Web Series episode, the 2017 Iriz was quieter compared to the Myvi. Based on our first time in the updated one, we do agree that new car is even quieter still and remains composed, which adds weight to Proton’s NVH improvement claims.

Our only other driving-related exercise of the day was a slalom so we can be reacquainted with the Iriz’s dynamic ability. Sadly, we had to play passenger as a Proton employee brought us out, forcefully trying to unsettle the car at mid-range speeds by making sharp lefts and rights to cause a spinout.

Thankfully, the undesirable didn’t happen and the Iriz continued to ferry passenger after passenger on the same course, with the ESC and traction control systems keeping things in check when the chassis is pushed beyond its limits. Proton’s ride and handling remains a key selling point.

FIRST DRIVE: 2019 Proton Iriz – a more in-depth look

From a driving dynamics standpoint, the Iriz makes a very strong case for itself, and the equipment updates do help to add value to the hatchback, making it an interesting proposition for car buyers. Design remains a subjective thing, although it’s hard not to agree that it is a much bolder-looking vehicle this time around.

It’s commendable that Proton has continued working to better the Iriz, improving it bit by bit. It may not have been the Myvi killer, or the game changer it had hoped it to be, but it’s now finally the most complete version of itself.

So, will the new Iriz be enough to help Proton regain ground in a segment where the Myvi is currently dominant? Only time will tell.

Yes, better thank China, Geely and Li Chunrong for keeping Proton alive and making sales again.

Li Chunrong, in 6 months as CEO of Proton, manage to identify what made Proton bankrupt. He identified that suppliers and vendors were overcharging Proton big time.

Our local CEOs could not identify this issue in 20 years.

Now looks like because of China’s brain, Proton is heading to new heights!

I don’t know why Proton is wasting money on reviving the Iriz when Geely wants to wipe out the entire range of Proton models and market all their Geely models in Malaysia.

This is just an utter waste of resources. Proton already announced 78.3% of their total sales come from Saga and Persona. The remainder bulk comes from Government ordered Perdanas.

Why keep this line open when it is not making money and cost more to keep the workers of the line paid?

Proton Iriz owners going to get very hurt when Geely kills this product and bring their own Geely model into Malaysia to replace the Iriz.

Then to get spare parts for the Iriz also going to be very difficult cause Proton will be making Geely spare parts in the future

Those who uses cheap LED reflectors can attest that it’s pretty useless in our Malaysian constantly rainy weather. The white LED have much difficulty to penetrate rain droplets leading to bad driver vision. And to add, the light scatter from the reflectors just blind oncoming traffic w/o the benefits of clearer view to the users. See those cheap LEDs used on City, Civic & Accord high spec models.

Yes, even much higher priced civic ketam has laughable LED headlamps.

As A has said, white light sucks in rain, why LED manufacturers don’t get it? It’s not hard to keep it about 4300K, it just is the better colour temperature.

And halogen headlamps are cheaper to replace. Myvi LED headlamp if u break it, rm900 fly.

    • That’s why fog lights exist, they are able to penetrate fog/rain better. Too bad most Malaysians don’t know the proper way to use fog lights, they always switch it on, rain or shine. Worse, they only turn on the fog lights with the positioning lights without switching the main beam on.

And wowzers! Both P1 and Geely alredi sharing Punch CVT enhancements with each other?! Way too cool, even something as big as Geely oso not shamed to learn from smaller P1. If it had been with Jepunis lords like P2, they can only listen and cannot make improvements cuz them Jepunis thinks they r the best and no need to listen (like Takata).

And even Haf has given his seal of approval that interior comfort is miles better than Mivi, heck, even better than Hondas!

P1 has taken Jepunis Kaizen to continuously improve on Iriz and now turned it against the Jepunis creator! Lolz!”

It’s interesting to note that during hardbraking, all 4 wheels are still planted on the tarmac. This unlike the infamous Honda 3 wheel dip during hard brakes.

None. Proton fanboys have said Iriz too came with 6 airbags plus HPF. AEB or ASA or LED headlights cannot protect you from a side impact collision in which the HPF cell will save your miserable life. Now this is what Proton fanboys have said.

Correction: only the top spec got 6 airbags (what a shame)
Btw, direct impact to HPF B pillar without any additional protection can still crack your thick skull in a side impact collision…
Engineers dont invent the side curtain airbags for no reason… its 2019 la now…

Yeah sure. Unless your 4 airbag Myvi comes with curtain airbags, neither those side airbags will prevent your skull from cracking in a side impact collision. In that situation, I’d rather take my chances in a better protected safety cell.

I must say that the pre FL rear are so much better than this. The proton wording at the back are fine but the black element are hideous. Should at least paint it according to the body colour, it will be so much better. Plus, the rear bumper now looks like Kia Picanto. Oh and i’m not a Proton basher, i owned the first batch Iriz Premium and that is my daily drive to work. Clocked almost 150k KM with it already yet it still drives well without problem. Love every bit of the car, the great handling of it especially.

Then, why proton don’t add one USB port behind rear view mirror, just like X70? If meter cluster, gear knob and head unit can inspired from X70, I think, put 1 USB port for Dashcam, will be more simple.

When the iriz first launched 5 years ago (damn, time flew!), safety and handling are all it had to it. It was the cheapest car with ESC and HPF, which is very commendable and the ultimate dealmaker for me to get it. Safety is almost impossible to be added on, so to make multi-year commitment, it is prudent to weigh safety very high up in your consideration.

But even safety has its limit. The NVH was simply unacceptable, even today after 3 years of ownership, and really spoilt my mood. Jerks around like a noob driving manual, and the 1.3L was too weak to carry that weight, it really tested me, and made it very hard to recommend to normal people. Its worse than Myvi fc and expensive service cost then compounded that difficulty too.

But today, things have changed that tilted the balance. Proton since Geely takeover has been more transparent about service cost, and it’s now dropped to be on par with Myvi. Syukur harga barang turun!

A lot of work it seems to focus on NVH, which i think is brilliant. If you cannot compete with Myvi head on at where they’re strongest, you have to switch and focus elsewhere, and NVH is a valid strategic focus, while still having safety and handling in the bag. I test drove the 1.6 premium MC1 before, and my god I was impressed. I’ve said before here, i liked the way the powertrain reacts now 2nd best after Honda Jazz/City’s L15A + Earth Dream CVT torque converter. Way smoother and predictable, making it easier to drive and react ahead.

And i have faith it has better soundproofing than Honda, so I’d gladly accept that. Honda may have the quietest engine sound when driven normally below 2,000rpm in most urban driving scenario, but lack of soundproofing makes them a PITA with deafening wind, tyre roar.

It may still not have class leading fc, but when you get pampered with quiet, smooth, comfy ride unlike the pre-fl one, it changes everything and i think it’s a worthy price to pay. Such NVH makes the whole driving experience more pleasant, relaxing, less fatigue, it’s quite desirable.

To anyone considering, I’d say go for 1.6L, the added 0.3L is worth topping up for overall better power and torque across the whole rev range. And that will come handy in all situations whether just creeping in car park to doing highway run.

  • Look at that body roll from the photo. Its really terrible.
I have driven both the Iriz and the VW Polo. At the same high speed corner, Iriz’s traction control kick in at 80km/h, while the VW Polo does 120km/h comfortably.
Don’t start saying these 2 models are not comparable, they are in the same segment and would be in the same price bracket if it wasn’t for taxes. Shows how much our national car still needs to improve before even start thinking about competing internationally.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1
    • Our highway speeds are 110 kmph. If Proton were to set traction control at 120 kmph, it will never activate when it is needed. Context brother, context! I have driven both and Iriz proved to be the winner in terms of driving dynamics and handling at all speeds.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 8 Thumb down 0
      • Bro, traction control activation has nothing to do with speed. The triggering point of a traction control is when your wheel slips beyond certain point, which the traction control makes adjustments to prevent understeer or oversteer. So if your car’s traction control kicks in, it simply means your car is slipping more than its suppose to be.
So if u drive 2 different car in similar manner, the car which has traction control kicks in earlier simply means that car is less stable.
Do you think your statement that Iriz has better driving dynamics & handling is convincing? Malaysian technology better than German technology? The way u say it only make you sound like a fanboy. No facts and figures.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1
        • lol. Do you know that Iriz safety system (ESC & traction control) was developed by Bosch? Malaysian technology lousier than German technology? From your logic, Proton’s German technology is lousier than German technology lor. You’re talking about the activation point of traction control, and when I pointed out the flaw in your argument you changed tact then say it has nothing to do with speed. What lalang story is this? Here’s some context for you to digest, Polo’s much higher activation point is because they are for designed for use on Autobahns with much higher running speeds so it’s natural for them to brake from 200 kmph down whereby at 120 kmph traction control can kick in. As compared to our max highway speeds at 110 kmph, so it’s natural to set a lower threshold for traction control activation.

Next time do some reading on your subject matter and not just call those who point out the flaws in your argument fanboys because it makes sounds like you come across as an ignoramus.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1
          • Bro, if your point is correct, why not proton set all their cars to be max speed at 110km/h since that is the national car limit?
Trust me, i have been in the automotive industry and there is no carmaker who does their setting based on local road speed limits or policy. They only do setting based on their car’s capability.
With the exception that the local government force them to do so, like the example of Nissan GTR in japan, they can only do up to 160km/h on normal streets, their further speed can only be unlocked if the GPS locates them to be at a circuit. But our local government has no such enforcement to any car manufacturers for now.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2
          • Lol. Talk so highly about yourself but didn’t use the logic. Give me a reason why Proton need to set at 110 kmph? When you brake from max speed of 110 you go below that right? So what’s wrong with putting the threshold at 80 with a 20kmph gap to factor in hardbraking? If by setting the activation point at 110 are you suggesting Iriz owners should travel above 110? Above the speed limits? Logic bro? I’m also in the automotive industry and I’m confident what you said doesn’t have any merits unless you can show me proof.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1
          • Bro, i will stop arguing with you from here. Since your sole purpose is only to prove that Iriz is the better car. But always remember, the first step in improving is realizing there is a room for improvement. If your mindset is that Iriz is already better than VW Polo, which is the benchmark car for B segment hatchback worldwide by many car manufacturers, then good luck to u. At the end of the day, the sales figures will tell the truth; customer’s choice will prove who is better. =)

I drove iriz at high speed almost 110kmph at parliment road sharp corner..and infront of me was vw polo which i saw was unstable to corner and the vw polo give way for me as it took left side. To be honest, i also have vw golf even i’m not dare to drove at high speed as what i did on proton iriz at that parliment road sharp corner . On proton iriz on whatever sharp corner you can take almost 110kmph without having any over or under steer..you feel the confident. Those whose drove proton iriz will know the feel.

I think now I get why Iriz has a more aggressive styling compared to Persona – because it wants to compete with the new Myvi and targets youngsters more. The Persona has a bit more softer styling and is probably targetting young adults with small families. The tagline also kinda makes sense when you compare it that way. Iriz – Excites / Persona – Cares / X70 – Inspire. Wonder what the new saga tagline would be then.
