Proton S70 – 4 variants; 1.5L Turbo and 6 airbags as standard, ADAS only on Flagship, still no CarPlay

Proton S70 – 4 variants; 1.5L Turbo and 6 airbags as standard, ADAS only on Flagship, still no CarPlay

Following today’s announcement that the first Proton S70 sedan has rolled off the production line at the carmaker’s plant in Tanjong Malim, a photograph of what appears to be table of specifications across the C-segment sedan’s range of variants has surfaced on Facebook.

Four variants have been described in the image of the specifications table, and these are the 1.5T Executive, 1.5T Premium, 1.5T Flagship and the 1.5T Flagship X.

Key features highlighted for the base variant, the 1.5T Executive include 16-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlamps, push-button start and driver’s door smart entry, five USB ports and four speakers, cruise control, while infotainment starts with an eight-inch integrated head unit (IHU) that is Linux-based, with a 1,024 x 600 screen resolution. It also gets conventional analogue meters with a 3.25-inch monochrome display.

Safety kit on the base Executive variant brings six airbags, ABS, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control and hill hold assist, while advanced safety features include rear cross traffic alert, rear collision warning, door opening warning and lane change assist.

Stepping up to the 1.5T Premium variant will add automatic LED headlamps, a full-width tail light bar, automatic air-conditioning with rear vents, and leatherette interior upholstery. Safety kit added to the Premium variant includes a reversing camera as well as front and rear parking sensors.

Moving on the the 1.5T Flagship, rolling stock is then comprised of 17-inch alloy wheels, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster at 1,920 x 720 resolution and 10.25-inch infotainment head unit, power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless phone charger and a 360-degree camera system.

Proton S70 interior

Also on the 1.5T Flagship is Level 2 ADAS as featured on the brand’s X90 SUV, save for the omission of emergency lane keeping assist and auto park assist. Infotainment functionality on the Flagship also adds voice command. Topping the quartet is the 1.5T Flagship X variant, which adds a sunroof.

While Atlas is mentioned in the specifications table here, conspicuous by absence in the Proton S70 are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This of course has been anticipated, as confirmed by Proton deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah in July this year, before the S70 name was confirmed.

Also important is that it appears all variants will get the 1.5L turbocharged engine, so it’s the same performance across the board. However, it looks like the S70 will get the port-injection 1.5T (same as in the lower-end X50) rather than the direct-injection 1.5TGDi engine in the X50 Flagship and X70, so expect it to get 150 PS and 226 Nm rather than 177 PS and 255 Nm.

So, what do you think? Which of these variants would best serve your C-segment sedan needs? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Salesman will say..around RM70K for base model …push for 100% loan..then when loan approved..price is Rm85K plus 10yr hire purchase Loan interest of 3.5%pa.
      Loan interest is rm29750..almost 30 K.
The whole damn car cost 85plus30=115K without insurance n road tax.
A week later,P1 salesman rewarded with a handsome commission from banker.
Only desperadoes buy cars without knowing the selling price.

You are right. I don’t use Auto car play that comes with my car. In fact, I seldom use the paddle shifter or Auto cruise control either.

  • Nothing to be proud of on Nov 01, 2023 at 4:33 pm

Rebadged China product and design. Nothing to be proud of. Proton’s RnD talent is lost. Proton suppliers also lose their engineering skills, only mould and press using molds and dies from China. Sad days for Malaysia.

So take your pick 1.5L TPFi (made in China) which is cheaper or the 1.5L TGDi (assemble in Malaysia) which is the most expensive which the same engine in X90 & X70 which has burned (Note: unknown if burning is caused by the 1.5TGDi engine assembly in Malaysia as people like to criticize).

The specs are quite a letdown considering that Perodua can offer many of these features at a lower price point.

    1. Still no AA/ACP? Deal breaker.
    2. Electronic parking brake & reverse camera not standard across the range?
    3. Halogen lamp for exec is disgusting considering Axia offers LED lighting at much much lower point.
    4. 10″ TFT instrument cluster, 17 inch wheels should be accessible for the premium also. Else it’s weird to have Premium variant thats so poor in specs.

Proton did a very good job on the classy all black with matte silver interior. Luckily no beige seat or red tone or any reflective chrome panel.

i don’t understand why we still need to protect proton. basically giving a chinese company free money. let them compete fairly with other manufacturers. everyone will benefit

150ps and 226nm engine is more than enough for a C segment. A simple ECU remap can easily gain 20% more power. Now the concern is the price. If the flagship cost around 100k it gonna gives a tough fight to Civic.

Why Direct-injection for higher variants? Port-injection should be used turbo to minimize carbon build up…btw, turbo + 3-cylinder + DCT is nightmare for long term maintenance

This is quite interesting. The transmission DCT 7-speed alone should be enough extra selling point for segment C sedan comparing civic RS and the rest which use lousy-quick to broken CVT gearbox.

ADAS got 2 lever? Wow…This is engineering marvel because normally ADAS has no lever. This feature alone can beat Civic RS or Altis anytime.
