Audi Malaysia Takata airbag recall reminder – 2,242 owners of 2010-2011 models yet to replace airbags

The Takata airbag safety recall remains the biggest in automotive history, involving at least two dozen carmakers, nearly 200 models and millions of units of vehicles.

For the uninitiated, a little over 10 years ago, a series of airbag-related injuries and deaths happened worldwide, including the tragic loss of a pregnant Malaysian woman’s life in 2014. Investigations pointed towards the manufacturer, Takata, which was found to have used an ammonium nitrate compound without a drying agent as the propellant for its airbag inflators.

This compound’s volatility can cause the inflator to explode, potentially ejecting shrapnel into the cabin and causing serious injury or even death to vehicle occupants. As airbags already inflate with great speed and force, you can imagine how dangerous this can be, and something that’s designed to save your life should not instead become a threat to it.

In full recognition of this highly safety-critical issue that should not be taken lightly in the slightest, Audi Malaysia has been actively running the nationwide Takata airbag safety recall campaign for several years. Still, there remains 2,242 owners in Malaysia who have yet to replace their airbags.

If you own a Model Year 2010 A3, A4, A5, A5 Cabriolet, A6, Q5 or TT, or a Model Year 2011 A6, enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) into the online Service Action checker. If your vehicle is affected, contact your preferred authorised service centre (see all locations here) as soon as possible for an inspection and airbag replacement, free of charge and hassle.

If you’re not an owner but know someone who owns any of these models, do help pass the word – you could save his or her life.

Volkswagen Malaysia Takata airbag recall – 19,400 owners of 2010-2019 models yet to replace airbags

It’s been more than 10 years now since the Takata airbag issue erupted, and the fact that we’re still reporting on it, despite the company having gone bankrupt eight years ago because of it, is a grim reminder of its sheer scale.

Airbags inflate with great speed and force using propellants, and Takata was found to have used an ammonium nitrate compound without a drying agent as the propellant for its airbag inflators. The compound’s volatility can cause the inflator to explode, potentially ejecting shrapnel into the cabin and causing serious injury or even death to vehicle occupants.

It took a series of injuries and deaths worldwide (including the tragic loss of a pregnant Malaysian woman’s life in 2014) to spark off the biggest recall in automotive history, involving at least two dozen carmakers, nearly 200 models and millions of vehicle units.

Needless to say, this highly safety-critical issue should not be taken lightly in the slightest, because the last thing you want is for something that’s designed to save your life to become a threat to it instead. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia is fully aware of this and has been actively running the nationwide Takata airbag safety recall campaign for several years, but there are still 19,400 owners in Malaysia who have yet to replace their airbags.

  • Honda Malaysia recalls 87,490 vehicles for fuel pump issue – Jazz, City, Civic, CR-V, BR-V and more affected

Honda Malaysia recalls 87,490 vehicles for fuel pump issue – Jazz, City, Civic, CR-V, BR-V and more affected

Honda Malaysia has announced a recall involving 87,490 units of Honda vehicles to replace their fuel pumps as a precautionary measure.

In an official release, the company lists two different issues relating to the fuel pump of affected vehicles. As of today, there are no incidences of crashes or injuries caused by these issues reported in Malaysia. The first issue relates to the fuel pump impeller, which may swell after prolonged fuel immersion that can result in the vehicle failing to start or stalling while driving.

This fuel pump recall is part of a global issue affecting Denso fuel pumps which has affected more than 4 million vehicles from multiple brands worldwide.

This issue affects 84,073 units of the Jazz, City, Civic, Accord, BR-V, HR-V and CR-V and Odyssey of varying model years, which are listed as follows:

    • Honda Jazz – 2015 to 2020 model year
    • Honda Jazz Hybrid – 2018 model year
    • Honda City – 2014 to 2019 model year
    • Honda City Hybrid – 2018 to 2019 model year
    • Honda Civic – 2017 to 2018 model year
    • Honda Accord – 2013 to 2017 model year
    • Honda BR-V – 2017 to 2018 model year
    • Honda HR-V – 2015 to 2018 model year
    • Honda CR-V – 2018 to 2020 model year
    • Honda Odyssey – 2017 to 2019 model year

Meanwhile, the second issue involve the high-pressure fuel pump in affected vehicles, which may crack due to prolonged use and excessive stress. The company says this could potentially lead to a fuel leak or give rise to fuel odour while driving or idling. This issue affects 3,417 units of newer Honda models that are listed as follows:

    • Honda Civic – 2023 to 2024 model year
    • Honda CR-V – 2024 model year

Honda Malaysia says all current production and selling models are not affected by this recall campaign. “The company believes this product recall is necessary as customer safety is Honda Malaysia’s top priority. The company will continue to take proactive measures and uphold transparency and stringent controls to ensure the safety of its customers. As such, Honda Malaysia is extending the recall to models where the warranty period has lapsed,” it said in its release.

Customers with affected vehicles will be informed via notification letters which contain details of the product recall. Customers can also check if their vehicle is involved in any recall via the HondaTouch app.

Honda Malaysia is urging all affected customers to get in touch with any authorised Honda dealer to set up an appointment to replace the fuel pump, subject to parts availability. The replacement of the parts is free of charge, with all cost related being borne by Honda Malaysia – the replacement stock will be available in stages.

In addition to the HondaTouch app, owners can check if their vehicle is affected by any recall by calling Honda Malaysia’s toll-free number at 1800-88-2020 or verifying their vehicle’s VIN on the official website.

JPJ announces recalls for Audi, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz vehicles – over 41,000 units affected

The road transport department (JPJ) has issued a statement for recalls involving more than 41,000 vehicles across five passenger car brands in Malaysia, comprised of Honda (previously announced by Honda Malaysia in November 2024), Kia, Ford, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

The tally comes to 41,688 vehicles to be exact, though this figure includes 291 units of MAN trucks for four variants of the 2021-2023 TGS prime mover, which is being recalled for a malfunctioning 24-volt socket within the instrument panel.

    Models from Honda involved in the latest JPJ recall are the 2022-2024 11th-generation Civic for the 1.5L E, V, RS and 2.0L e:HEV RS (26,802 units), the 2023-2024 Civic Type R (159 units), and the 2024 CR-V 1.5L E, V, S and 2.0L e:HEV RS (9,717 units).

This JPJ recall for the above Honda models are for abnormal sounds and roughness when turning the steering wheel, according to the department’s statement. Earlier, Honda Malaysia’s November 2024 statement elaborated on the matter, stating that the issue involves the EPS gearbox where its worm wheel may swell and reduce grease film thickness, causing abnormal steering noise or a sticky steering.

For Kia, the recall issued is for the XM-generation Sorento, for two separate issues and correspondingly, two model-year runs. The 2011-2015 Sorento (1,384 units) is being recalled for damaged engine connecting rod bearings, while the 2010-2014 Sorento (2,861 units) is recalled for a potential electrical short circuit which could cause a fire on the hydraulic electronic control unit circuit board.

Ford has 288 units of the Everest involved in two recalls. Of the 288 units, the first recall involves eight units of the 2022-2024 Everest 2.0L Titanium 4WD AT due to the e-shifter transmission selector draining the vehicle’s battery while driving.

The second recall for the SUV involves the 2.0L Sport 2WD AT (44 units), the 2.0L Titanium 4WD AT (214 units), the 2.0L Trend 4WD AT (12 units) and the 2.0L Wildtrak 4WD AT (12 units). This second recall is for driver or passenger side windows which may not automatically reverse (retract) when encountering an object; in other words, the anti-pinch function may not work.

Five models from Mercedes-Benz are involved in the latest recall announced by JPJ. Involved here is the 2022-2023 S 580 e (nine units), for lambda controls within the engine control unit (ECU) software which may not meet the required specifications.

The second batch of models are the 2017-2022 Mercedes-AMG E 53 (three units), CLS 53 (four units), GT 43 (one unit) and GT 53 (one unit); this batch is being recalled for potentially improperly manufactured electrical connectors for the transmission wiring circuit.

Take JPJ recalls seriously, it’s for your safety – Loke

Transport minister Anthony Loke has reminded vehicle owners to be more attentive to Road Transport Department (JPJ) recalls, saying that although failure to comply is not an offence, they are for personal and public safety, Bernama reports.

“Usually, when a manufacturer finds any defect or technical issue with the vehicle, they are required to notify JPJ, and JPJ will then announce the recall. This is the standard procedure,” he said recently at the Negeri Sembilan-level MyLesen Programme 2024 closing ceremony.

“It is a personal risk, not an issue of guilt… if they do not respond to the JPJ recall (for inspection), they will bear the safety risks, which we do not want, that’s why the announcement comes from JPJ because owners will take it more seriously. If the company calls, they might ignore it because it’s not from the authorities,” he added.

Take JPJ recalls seriously, it’s for your safety – Loke

Previously, recall announcements usually came from carmakers, but the government now mandates that such announcements are made by JPJ, explained Loke.

The Seremban MP also said that as of December 2, over 11 million individuals had the JPJeID to access the MyJPJ app, which has been downloaded by over 14 million users.

“As of October 31, RM222.7 million has been recorded for transactions related to the renewal of road tax and driving licences digitally. This shows acceptance of the digital transformation, which enhances efficiency for both users and the department,” Loke said.

  • Honda Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V recalled in Malaysia over steering issue – 36,000 units affected

Honda Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V recalled in Malaysia over steering issue – 36,000 units affected

Honda Malaysia has announced a recall for approximately 36,000 units of the Civic, Civic Type R and CR-V over an issue related to the steering on these cars. The models involved include the 11th-gen Civic (2022-2024 model year), Civic Type R FL5 (2023-2024 model year) and sixth-gen CR-V (2024 model year).

The issue involves the EPS gearbox, where the worm wheel may swell and reduce grease film thickness, causing abnormal steering noise or a sticky steering. The company said the recall will update the electric power steering (EPS) gearbox to solve the issue.

The company apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected customers, and reassured owners that other current production and selling models are not affected by this recall. The company said it will bear the cost of inspection, repair or replacement of the affected parts in this activity. It added that the replacement stock will be available in stages starting from December 2024.

The company added that all affected customers will be informed via notification letters, which will include details of the product update. Honda Malaysia has urged all customers involved in this update to contact any Honda authorised dealer to make an appointment upon receiving the notification, to have their vehicles inspected and/or repaired if required.

It said vehicle owners can obtain information or check their vehicle status by calling Honda Malaysia’s toll-free number at 1-800-88-2020 or by logging on to productrecall.honda.com.my or contacting any Honda authorised dealer.

The Malaysian recall follows on a recall notice the automaker made last month for two million vehicles and SUVs in North America over a similar issue involving the steering.

As for the CB350RS, which was launched in Malaysia in June, the recall is being issued for faulty speed sensora, which may cause incorrect speedometer readings as well as incorrect operation of the ABS and traction control. A similar recall notice was issued over this matter in India back in September.

The department added that all vehicle owners affected by the recalls will be contacted by the manufacturers for checks and rectification to be carried out, at no cost to owners.

    Chery

    • Chery Omoda 5 (November 2023 – April 2024) – 600 units

In reference to the recent, widely publicised case of rear axle failure involving a Chery Omoda 5 customer unit, which was found to have originated from a welding issue, JPJ stated that Chery Auto Malaysia Sdn Bhd began recalls from May 3, 2024, and has informed the road transport department of the recall.

The company has inspected 592 out of 600 affected units as of June 7, for a completion of 98.67%. The remainder of owners of the affected vehicles have been contacted, and the inspection activity is expected to be complete by the end of June 2024, said the JPJ.

The company initially contacted 60 affected vehicle owners, and subsequently issued a precautionary safety recall for 600 units of the SUV. and the JPJ also issued a recall notice for the vehicles, and the department stated it will monitor the process.

As of May 28, Chery Malaysia stated that 92% of the affected Omoda 5 units have been inspected. On June 13, the customer with an affected vehicle, for which the case went viral, stated on social media that the matter has been resolved, and the case has been closed.

  • Chery Malaysia Omoda 5 recall: 92% of cars inspected

Here’s an update on the Chery Omoda 5 rear axle issue and recall. Chery Malaysia has completed 92% of vehicle inspections for affected customers as of May 24.

“At Chery Malaysia, ensuring your safety is our utmost concern. As of May 24, we have completed 92% of vehicle inspections for the affected customers who had scheduled appointments at our authorised service centres,” the company said in a social media post yesterday.

The previous update on the matter was on May 17, when Chery announced that it had managed to contact all 600 customers affected by the recall. Then, the inspection completion rate was 65%. Prior to that, the carmaker successfully contacted 60 customers for rear axle replacement.

There’s no typo there. A total of 60 units of the Omoda 5 in Malaysia were identified to be using the affected part, produced on August 15, 2023. Chery Malaysia then decided to cast a wider net and recall vehicles with parts made between August 14 and 17, totalling 600 units.

The root cause of the issue has been identified to be a miscalibration of welding equipment at a vendor. “Following a comprehensive investigation, the vendor reported that the issue was due to a facility upgrade during which a worn-out tip of the automated welding machine was replaced by a new welding tip. The replacement of the new welding tip resulted in a miscalibration of the equipment,” Chery Auto Malaysia VP Lee Wen Hsiang said earlier this month.

Chery has set up a website for owners to check whether or not their car is included in the recall.

Chery Malaysia Omoda 5 recall – root cause of axle welding issue identified; new recall website now online

Chery Malaysia has issued yet another statement on the Omoda 5 rear axle case. This is the company’s third public statement after the case exploded on social media on April 28. The initial statement was released the day after, acknowledging the issue, with a second one following soon after on April 30, officially issuing a recall on 600 units of the Omoda 5.

The third statement – released today, May 4 – offers a few interesting insights on the issue. Chery Malaysia says it is “working closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to ensure the rectification of all affected vehicles to the highest standards of safety.” It voluntarily arranged a meeting with the MoT to brief them on the matter, according to Lee Wen Hsiang, Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President.

The root cause of the issue has also been identified following a thorough investigation. “Following a comprehensive investigation, the vendor reported that the issue was due to a facility upgrade during which a worn-out tip of the automated welding machine was replaced by a new welding tip. The replacement of the new welding tip resulted in a miscalibration of the equipment,” said Lee.

A total of 60 units of the Omoda 5 in Malaysia has been identified to be using the affected parts, produced on August 15, 2023. Chery Malaysia then decided to cast a wider net and recall vehicles with parts made between August 14 and 17, totalling 600 units. As of yesterday (May 3), Chery Malaysia has contacted 32 of the initial 60 affected owners.

A new website has also been created for owners to confirm whether or not their car is affected by the recall. Chery Malaysia also pledges to release a weekly update to the public on this matter to provide ongoing information about the status of the recall programme.

In line with this commitment, Chery Auto Malaysia voluntarily arranged a meeting to brief the Ministry of Transport (MOT) on the current product inspection status and the root cause involving the Omoda 5 axle incident,” Chery Auto Malaysia Vice President, Lee Wen Hsiang, explained.

The automaker conducted a thorough investigation into the isolated case and reached out to the parts vendor for further clarification. “Following a comprehensive investigation, the vendor reported that the issue was due to a facility upgrade during which a worn-out tip of the automated welding machine was replaced by a new welding tip. The replacement of the new welding tip resulted in a miscalibration of the equipment,” said Lee.

As a direct result, the automaker says that there are a total of 60 units of Omoda 5 vehicles with the affected parts in Malaysia, produced on 15 August 2023. Chery Auto Malaysia has since taken additional precautionary measures by casting a wider net by implementing a special service campaign to call in and inspect OMODA 5 vehicles with rear axles produced between 14 to 17 August 2023, totalling 600 units.

“Chery Auto Malaysia views this matter most seriously as customer safety is our utmost priority. We are in the process of reaching out to customers of the affected Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to request them to bring their vehicle to our authorised service centres for a detailed inspection.

“We have also set up a website for Omoda 5 users to confirm their vehicles are not affected which can be done by simply keying in their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Our authorised service centres and technicians are well prepared to serve our customers
potentially affected by this,” Lee concluded.

Chery Auto Malaysia has confirmed that no other vehicles by the brand are affected.

Owners of Omoda 5 can check if their vehicles are affected by keying in their VIN number at https://www.chery.my/chery-product-update

Chery Malaysia recalls 600 units of Omoda 5 over potential axle issue – rear beam to be replaced

Chery Malaysia has issued a precautionary safety recall on 600 units of the Omoda 5 over a potential axle issue. This comes following a viral social media post where a customer’s Omoda 5 apparently had its rear axle detach from the vehicle while driving.

The company said it has identified the issue, and that the rear axle beam component on affected vehicles will be completely replaced and not repaired. The work will take about two hours. Affected owners will be directly contacted very soon to bring their cars in.

Chery also added that it had identified one batch of parts to be affected, which may have been caused by a facility upgrade exercise by a particular parts vendor. The company assured its customers that the affected batch of cars are still safe to be driven, and claimed that the viral incident is an isolated case that has since been successfully resolved.

If they so wish, unaffected customers outside the 600 units (over 7,000 units of the Omoda 5 have been sold in Malaysia) can contact the Chery Malaysia careline +603 2771 7070 to have their cars checked, and full reports on the inspection will be provided.

A dedicated website will also be created for customers to check whether their car is included in the recall.
