DRIVEN: Proton Suprima S 1.6 Turbo Premium tested

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 001

Public opinion is an odd thing. Sometimes it’s absolutely spot on, while other times, well, the public is just plain wrong. But once faith has gone, it takes a painfully long time to rebuild. Once scorned, it’ll be a while before many of us go near that guilty party again, if ever. That is, if there’s even a choice.

And so, to Proton. Public confidence in the national carmaker has been tailing off for years, and not without good and/or (most likely and, for most of us) frequent reason. There was the Waja, Gen 2, Persona, Exora, and last year, the much-awaited and hyped Preve. All promised a lot of things, but delivered few.

You hear all the time that the new one is the turnaround car, but it isn’t quite so simple. Even if they’re very good – and the Preve did come very close – it’ll take several years to build up that vital public confidence back again. Strike gold, and the absolute best Proton can hope for is stabilisation.

The real turnaround will come only a few years down the line, when buyers get confident and feel they can put their hard-earned cash behind the vehicles from the first national car company once more. That’s the upside, provided the new Proton Suprima S – now ready to be tested – really is good enough to start the brand back up again. Well now, is it?

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 004

If it isn’t, then Proton really is in trouble. We’ve driven the new model a fair bit to shake out the truth. When the Preve was launched, you may remember, it was pitched, in theory at least, against the Civics and the Fortes of this world. It did well and we rather liked it, even if we did have some reservations.

Now though, the Suprima S has been moved upmarket and is aimed at the mid-sized hatchbacks – the Golf, Focus, 308 and the like. The new Proton hasn’t just changed its gunsights in class and price – it’s also trying to be a bit more sporty.

Out goes the boot, replaced by an intricately designed rump that – take this subjectively, if you will – grows on you the more you see it. I enjoyed a striking moment when it was parked back towards the sun for photography. The light play around the protruding, complex rear panel clearly shows that a lot of work has been put here.

It’s an intricate design that calls upon a fair bit of interplay between seemingly stray lines and surfaces. The Gen 2 had a similarly busy-looking rear end. But they both work, and very well at that. The Suprima S appears taut and low from behind, with no way of telling that it’s ever based on a sedan. It’s just too bad the exhaust pipe is hidden behind the non-functional rear diffuser.

The whole design looks purposeful, like this is exactly the way it was meant to be in the first place. There’s no awkwardness present in the way the rear end dips downwards to create a clean hatchback look, and this is despite the Preve and Suprima S sharing identical rear door panels – check them; they’re the same exact doors.

It has to be said that of the two, it’s the sedan that appears to be less cohesive in terms of proportions. The rising window line fits the hatchback design better, the Suprima S clearly benefitting from not having an awkwardly high bootline. You’d have expected the spin-off to be the one taking compromises, but it ends up looking better than the original. Funny, that.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 011

The front stays much of the same, with little changed from the Preve. But hey, that has always been a handsome looking car, strutting a defiantly chiselled look. So, a minor product differentiation update was all the Suprima S needed. At least to look good.

Taken from the updated Inspira 2.0P are the new 17-inch wheels, now with titanium-like finish on the inside and matte diamond-cut surface on the outside. They do well to add some visual sophistication to the car, which is good, as Proton isn’t known to necessarily make the best decisions with wheels. Remember the original Satria Neo’s blingtastic turbine alloys, anyone?

It’s not all good news, though. The snazzy new LED strips – now daytime driving lights over the Preve’s dimmer position lights – have a very narrow viewing angle (tighter than most DRLs). It looks almost unlit unless viewed from dead on centre, which is to say that it’s more visible through a car’s rear-view mirror rather than to oncoming traffic.

Also guilty of fashion faux pas are the new lower air intake covers. The simpler horizontal slats design may open up the intake more to increase the radiator’s efficiency by a stonking 14%, but it does make the innards of the car more visible. Too visible, by our view.

Then there’s the rear LED light guides, i.e. rear night light. Proton claims to have achieved the same level of luminance from the Suprima’s two LEDs (per side) compared to the Preve’s 14. It sure looks good, but unless it’s very dark, the light guides appear too thin to be discernible from afar.

Similar to the Preve, the stop/brake lights are still bulb-based, which forgoes the use of LED rear-illumination’s main key advantage over incandescent bulbs – its significantly faster response speed. Used the way it is here, the LEDs are merely an aesthetic feature with no real function, which is a shame.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 058

Inside, the new trim panels and on-dash multimedia system are the main changes. The Preve CFE’s dark wood trim has been replaced with silver panels with fine cubic print, and the additions of leather upholstery and gloss black trim on the steering wheel, paddle shifters and gear knob complete the visual overhaul. The rest of the dashboard is still grey and hard in most places, as per the Preve’s.

The new Android-based seven-inch touchscreen system is designed by German car audio specialist Blaupunkt, and has a long list of features including GPS satellite navigation (by Lokatoo; identical to the one found in the Perodua Myvi), audio and video playback (USB, SD card or Aux input), plus Wi-Fi (a YES 4G dongle comes with the car) and Bluetooth connectivity.

It uses a resistive touchscreen rather than the newer and more commonly-used capacitive unit – a decision made to aid usability and tactility. It requires you to press on the screen to register an input, compared to a capacitive display’s touch-sensitive screen. Proton claims that it offers better tactile feedback, and it can be used with gloves on too.

But, the screen’s display quality is poor, and even at its maximum brightness, it struggles under bright sunlight. What’s worse, it’s not the most user-friendly system either, requiring quite some learning to master all the available features (of which there are lots).

Also new are the two extra tweeters mounted on the A-pillars, making up a fuller, better sounding audio system with a good level of customisation through the touchscreen display (only on the Premium variant).

Integrated into the display is the rear-view camera, now paired to a visual aid along with the new front parking sensors, which is a nice addition. The front sensors, however, are turned off by default, and require you to operate the dash-mounted button when needed. This is opposed to every other manufacturer’s choice of automatically turning them on below a certain speed.

At least, the Preve’s folding side mirror issue has been addressed. They now unfold as you unlock the car, and not after you drive off – a jarring oversight as evidently Proton forgot that you may need them when manoeuvring the Preve out of a parking spot. Good to know they listen to customer feedback/complaints, though.

Perhaps something that not enough people have complained about is the flawed seating position. You still sit too high in the Suprima S, and the steering rake adjustment (there is still no reach adjustment) doesn’t allow the wheel to be moved high enough to suit the elevated seating position. More often than not, you’re looking down on the steering wheel rather than at it.

On a more positive note, the Suprima S does offer a suite of six airbags as standard, on top of ABS with EBD and BA, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control. It’s claimed to qualifiy for a top-notch five-star ANCAP crash safety rating, which surprisingly betters the new Honda Accord, Jaguar XF, MINI Countryman and Range Rover Evoque, among others.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 096

The rear quarters have been revamped, to match the new car’s hatchback form. The new headrests sit flush to the seat back to improve rear visibility, and practicality is a strong point back here.

There’s just as much passenger space as there is in the Preve, so that’s more than you’d get in a Mazda3, and on par with a Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Additonally, ISOFIX mounts are fitted as standard in the back, but unfortunately, there are still no rear air con vents.

Boot space is down from the Preve’s class-leading 508 litre to just 309 by ISO/VDA measurement, but you do gain a much larger/taller cargo area with the seats folded flat. One issue though; there’s no external boot release. You either have to hold down the unlock button on the keyfob (no dedicated boot release button here) or open the driver door and pull the switch hidden in the door pocket. Seriously, Proton?

But that’s enough complaining. Let’s move on to the more significant changes that are apparent on the new model, beginning with the substantially revised drivetrain package. It’s astounding that Proton failed to mention this at the Suprima S’ launch event, because it’s the new car’s most improved feature.

There’s now an enhanced mounting structure for the drivetrain, with the inclusion of a new transmission mounting bracket and rear roll bracket. An additional noise insulation layer has also been added to the enhanced transmission, which is now named the VT3+ as opposed to the VT3 units used in the Preve and Exora.

Improvements applied to the secondary and pinion gears as well as the crown wheel (now made from a stronger material too) bring about significantly reduced transmission noise and vibration. The CVT whine that plagued the Preve has largely been addressed in the Suprima S.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 053

On the move, the changes translate directly to improved refinement, as the Suprima S is clearly quieter than the Preve. Move slowly from a stop, and there’s less judder from the transmission. Likewise, lift off the pedal to cruise, and voila, there’s no more annoying whine. It’s not quite as good as CVTs from Toyota or Nissan, mind you, but it’s getting there. Slowly but surely, then.

There’s also a new hill-hold assist feature, curiously only on the Premium variant. It holds the car in place on inclines, so it no longer rolls backwards as soon as you come off the brakes. A simple feature, but one that most current Preve owners would kill to have.

The throttle pedal map has been updated too, giving it a more linear but direct feel compared to the Preve. Proton claims that for any given pedal input (other than fully open, at which they’re identical), the Suprima S commands more power from the engine than the Preve does, which links to a more sporty feel.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 009

Though on paper the Suprima S is slower than the Preve (0-100 km/h in 9.9 seconds versus the sedan’s 9.6 seconds), it feels more immediate on the go, more reflective of the available 138 hp and 205 Nm of torque. It darts forward to the throttle, particularly at medium revs. At highway speeds, it delivers top-gear pull most 2.0 litre C-segment hatches can’t match, though it makes itself heard at anything more than half throttle.

The throttle response through the CVT gearbox still isn’t great, but there’s more than enough poke available when needed. You’ll quickly learn to avoid stamping on the right pedal, as the engine and CVT noise will have you reaching to cover your ears. Feed steady pressure on the pedal, and the impressive mid-range torque will get you where you need to go, quickly.

As for the suspension setup, very little needed improving. The basic MacPerson struts up front and rear multi-links are unchanged, with only detail revisions to the stabiliser bars and minute fine-tuning to suit the larger wheels made. Those detail changes do give it a strikingly perkier character, so there’s nothing wrong with detail, if it’s detail done well.

If it’s sporty you want and hang anything else, the Suprima S is the family hatchback you want. It loves being pushed, prodded, made to spring about the place in whatever direction you can think up. The steering is well weighted, and is quick and full of life as the car zaps into corners.

The Suprima S is easily balanced somewhere between very mild degrees of understeer and oversteer, with the 17-inch Achilles tyres delivering decent grip at all speeds. It responds in an impressively considered way, adding to its dynamic competence. Somehow it manages to feel effortless, yet spirited, on the curvy stuff.

This car changes direction with plenty of communication between it and the driver. It’s very well balanced, even more so than the already excellent Preve. Its superbly sorted handling is made even more impressive by its pliable ride quality, the car striking the right balance between drivability and comfort.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 037

It rides well, both at urban speeds and on lumpy back roads. For a family hatchback, it feels nicely planted, whereas the Mazda3 and Peugeot 308 would feel small and insubstantial in comparison. There’s a nice weight to all the driving controls, and it soaks up bumps with pleasing aplomb, with a bonus from the silence of its suspension.

Newer contenders in the C-segment family hatchback class like the C346 Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf Mk7 still have much better ride and handling, but it’s a big plus for Proton to even be compared to such segment contenders. Next to cars in the same price range (B-segment cars), the Suprima S is much more spacious, has a lot more usable performance and is far better equipped.

Sure, it has its flaws, as we’ve covered above, but at this price range (RM77k to RM80k), it puts up a valiant fight against its size rivals, let alone similarly priced and smaller alternatives. It’s without a doubt Proton’s best car yet (bar the Mitsubishi-sourced Inspira), substantially improving on last year’s Preve on which it’s based.

DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_ 102

It has a huge amount going for it, the Proton Suprima S, but alas, the company’s image and the national mood are the strongest opposition that it will face. However many corners Proton has turned, no matter how many comeback gigs it has staged, correcting public perception is its biggest hurdle.

The car itself is just fine – ranging from good in most key aspects (performance, interior space), excellent in some (ride and handling, value for money), to poor in others (build quality, top-end refinement). It definitely has the depth of ability as well as character to convert cynical Japanese and Korean car buyers.

It’s simple then. Proton can now compete realistically without leaning too heavily on price advantage alone. It’s just up to you to believe that it can.

Thanks Hafriz for the awesome review! It sure does sound promising. Unfortunately I’m unable to get a hold of it for the time being. Will surely do so later.

Also, good job to Proton. Some inputs: (1) get a better presenter during the launch, (2) set a higher standard of build quality and work on it, (3) improve after-sale services, (4) go expand overseas

Lastly to gomen, get your political hand out of Proton. Let professionals handles professional stuff, not crony.

Yes all the praises and all that. But it is solely because of Proton our household debt is one of the highest in the world. It is because of Proton that all cars in Malaysia went up in prices since the 90s. In the 90s, you could even buy a brand new Japanese car for RM20,000. It is because to protect Proton that the government started jacking up the taxes and duties of ALL cars. They pretend to tax ALL cars which include Proton but we all know lah what really goes on. Proton gets special treatment. Even every single car in Malaysia cannot sell below Proton price. All car manufacturers must go through MITI before they can sell the car and it is MITI that decides on the final price. UMW and Honda want to sell their Altis and Civic for RM80,000 also, they are strictly told they cannot do so. “You must sell your car at RM110,000 and above,”. That is the reply they get or else, completely no approval to sell their car. If don’t comply, your whole licence will be taken away and completely no APs will be given to you. That is why Mercedes and BMW also so scared. They want to sell cheaper but are threatened that they will be given lesser APs to bring their CKD panels and engines in.

Proton Suprima can even have a hundred airbags also, people will choose a good Japanese brand because we have seen the past 28 years how low quality the Proton car is. Don’t even talk about mechanical faults like power windows and all that, once your car meets with an accident, you are lucky to be alive. The past 27 years, most deaths occurred in Proton cars because the cars were made virtually of toilet paper quality of strength.

I pity Proton buyers. Most buyers are new car buyers and don’t know anything about resale value. Please be aware that Proton cars fall in RV so sharply that after 2 years, your car is less than half the price. then you are stuck with still 80% of your loan not paid. Proton is the ONLY car where owners have to TOP up to settle their existing bank loans when they buy a new car. YOu can pay for even 5 years susah susah also but when you sell your Proton, you have to cough out so much of money just to top up the loan amount to clear the old loan. All other cars, no need to top up. So your 5 or 8 years of susah susah paying your loan actually goes to clear our outstanding balance. This is because the RV remains. Let me reiterate, what you susah susah pay every month to clear your loan, just goes mainly to clear interest of the loan.

It is better for Proton to just close down. Every Malaysian now has to pay so much of their salary to support Proton. Cars should still be cheap like the 90s despite the yearly inflation taken into consideration. A good Japanese car should cost around RM40k if all the taxes and duites were not put in place 27 years to look after and protect Proton. For 27 years, every Malaysian is depriving their family of better food and clothes because half their salary goes paying their cars. If Proton did not exist, all our children will have better food and clothes to have because all cars would be reasonably priced.

Oh, forgot to add, Proton was born also to give all our banks a free ride. Our banks no need to pur any effort like how banks overseas work so hard to get business. In Malaysia, banks have non stop business pouring in from car buyers. The whole Proton idea was created to give our banks a free ride. Ever wonder why Proton cars have the highest interest rates compared with ALL other cars? Yes, it is to screw the 28 million people of Malaysia for more money. Anyway, the substantial increase of car prices from the 90s was a grand master plan to help our banks to reap more profit. Why? All our banks are mostly GLCs lah. Majority shareholder is always Khazanah or EPF. This was a very well thought our master plan from 1985 to screw the 28 million rakyat and benefit the banks of Malaysia.

Most vendors in Proton is a Malaysian company regardless of the owner’s ethnic. They do this so that we; Malaysian, could get better peluang pekerjaan.

Unless parts/technology that can’t be attained domestically, Proton will find imported ones. Eg: TC, EBD, Air Bag, & Throttle Pedal are from German.

So I BELIEVE, these vendors are the one who should be thankful to Proton and WORK HARD to deliver TOP QUALITY instead.

Ideally it’s as per mentioned. But… If you’re successful on top of your own ‘ílmu cari makan’, would you just simply ‘give’ that knowledge to others? SO that’s what can be said to car making technology and know how, we need to strive to establish the whole thing ourselves. Japanese, German etc won’t ever let us get theirs very easily. Also, do you think their big cos would ever give P1 their parts as good as their Toyota, Honda, VW and BMW get and let P1 cars compete at same level as these makes? If it is so, at the end of the day, who are going to loose? (Just my opinion)

i did agree with u that KIA and Hyundai design but disagree with u that the quality still crappy as Proton, Korean Car sell like hot cake in Europe country actually. What make korean car quality crappy in our country is due to our local deader Naza and Sime Darby, early year the service is really lousy and they clear stock with super cheap price (e.g. Kia Caren, AKA Naza Citra), it make the car totaly priceless at all. But fortunely, in this few year, Naza and Sime darby manage to build up the reputation with along the design revolution of Kia and Hyundai.

        • Actually, there are many features in Malaysia that are being used to measure patriotism:-
          1) Should drive national cars either P1, P2 or Naza.
          2) Must buy and attach flags to their cars, shops and houses.
          3) Should not criticise the ruling party.
          4) Should not support the “traitors” Opposition.
          5) Willingly paying all the amounts + tax + interest + “caj pentadbiran” for cigarettes, liquor, McD, airport tax, car excise duty, income tax, PTPTN, without questioning anything.

Inilah 5 rukun patriotisme Malaysia, tidak mematuhi walau satu pun akan menjadikan anda kurang patriotik dari yang lain.

          • How many years is needed to give for proton to improve? 100 years? 999 years? We all know clearly the issue with proton is that corruption & crony is messing up with its progress! The yardstick is with Kia & Hyundai. Until now still not up to par? Why?

Besides, people don’t support Proton is also part of the corruption, cronyism, & protection exist there. People will support a true genuine product. As long as those bad elements still exist, people will always be skeptical towards its.

Just for the sake of patriotism, I won’t go & simply support those crony. Besides by supporting those crony you are only destroying this country in the long run. Ironically it seems this is more like a betrayal to the country by causing lopsided pricing & preventing better lifestyle of others due to high car prices.

I’ve been using Preve for over a year now.. the fuel consumption is not that high. 50/50 Highway and town driving will give u around 7.1-7.5L/100km. 100% highway at 110km/h 7.0l/100. If u drive at 90 then u can easily get 6.6-6.9l/100km. Town driving is a bit high.. heavy foot then it can go up to 8.8-9.0l/100km. But thats a car with a 2.0 liter performance. Want to save fuel? buy a hybrid or ride a bicycle

If City cruise, Of coz the fuel will more bakar (include when if traffic jam). I also got Toyota Altis (dual vvti), also bakar fuel byk while in traffic jam.. If I change from auto to the shiftronic gear and get more power on highways, still my Altis fuels “cepat habis minyak jugak”.

        Suprima S = C-segment

Stop comparing with B-segment cars unless the B-segment cars have something that Suprima S doesn’t have. My personal opinion: The Suprima S should have all the things that B & C-segment cars have or better. They have the edge over other C-segment cars in terms of pricing after Forte was discontinued to give way to the Kia Cerato.

in malaysia cars can be compared at 2 different aspects like in this case…

          1. compare C segment to a C segment which is fair and square

          2. compare C segment to a B segment due to the disadvantages by non-national makes but the quality it provides, reliability and better after sales support. it can be either this way or vice versa.

    • I have test-driven this car, and I hate to say that this Suprima S is really not bad. The specs and features are up to world class. If you want to talk about design it’s just very subjective. Some people like it fluidic, some people like it angular and complex.
Features like blind-spot warning and auto-parking are still can be considered as advanced features, let’s just hope that Proton will feature it in their flagship model (Perdana replacement model).
The only thing I would criticize after test-driven the car is the lack of auto-blip function when downshifting. The paddle-shifter is responsive enough though. Proton claims that this car is sporty, therefore adding auto-blip to rev-match the transmission while downshifting would make the driving experience sweeter. Maybe Proton’s engineers still can’t came out with the technology yet, why not Proton utilize Lotus technology, since Lotus now has automatic transmission on Evora IPS, so Proton could produce sporty automatic transmission (if not dual-clutch).
I believe Malaysians willing to buy a slightly-expensive car if it’s really a good one.
      Bravo, Proton. And good luck.

        • I know. Of course CVT has no gears, it uses pulley-like device with different radius that’s connected via a belt to mimic the gearchange. As long as there is different RPMs for different gear (pulley radius) at constant speed, there is always room for rev-match in every downshifting to give smoother yet sportier gearshift.

  • If Proton could be more creative in designing the interior (especially the center panel), that’d be great. For now it just looks plain boring. And very hideous as well. The area below the screen (where the aircond controls are) looks too bland and empty, looks like some university students without enough budget just made a prototype car.

Steering FINALLY looks great! (except the cruise control knob which looks exactly like the very old Perdana). That shiny features looks awesome. Probably the best steering design ever from Proton for now. But please do something about the cruise control knob.

I believe some buttons on the center panel are not practical at all to put there….

The seat material doesn’t seems alluring. Polo has the best looking seat in my opinion (it looks cozy that you don’t wanna get out of the car).

I’ve just zoom-in the aircond control buttons. Looks China-made cheap lol.

The buttons for adjusting the mirror looks old, boring and again, cheap.

Not that I’m bashing, but I still have no confident yet with Proton and this car. Please innovate and be more creative.

On its potential, Hafriz mentioned that PROTON can now compete not merely on price alone, or rather get sales based on being cheaper than the competition. And that its biggest hurdle is its image itself.

I agree because I am among the millions that have been put off the brand due to two models that gave me so much grief that I took on the monicker NeverAProton, or NAP.

Which is why the decision to go on a different positioning i.e. not price was a bold, if risque on the carmaker’s part. I would have focussed to improve on quality issues taken up by the masses that form their core customer base first. The logic is simple: the masses form a loud voice, and if this quality perception is improved, the loud voices of discontent will be loud voices of acclaim.

Fighting head on with the Peugeots and the Fords is bold, but you risk a lot including beimg laughed off at first. Among many comments on PaulTan’s launch coverage was price; that huge mass of PROTON customers will always associate the carmaker with cheap cars. They are very happy with the cheap (and fairly good) Saga SV as deliveries and orders prove. Going the route of sporty premium may yet cause PROTON more grief, but as Hafriz said, its up to Malaysians now to give them a fighting chance.

For me, I will wait and see. But all the best to the carmaker, and it will be interesting to see if this car IS the one that will go down in history as the one that saw PROTON really turn the corner (after Waja, Satria Neo and Prévè…)

Its one thing to say it doen;t compete on price.

Price the Suprima S along with the Mazda 3 hatch, Golf TSI, Pug 308, at the same price and just see how well it’d sell.

ITs is still 40K less than any of them…and thats a lot of money.

Proton has had many opportunities to turn things around. But they have been shortsighted. A lot of good products were let down by issues that could have been fixed.

      Ie.
Gen2 – Good chassis, good looking design, half baked powertrain, rubbish interior
Satria Neo – Good chassis, numb steering, half baked powertrain, rubbish interior.
New Saga – Good chassis, weak engine, rubbish interior. The FL could have spend the money fixing the interior instead of the worst off exterior.
Inspira – Good run, but why only 2 airbags?? If it had 6 airbags, it would have owned the market.

I don’t have an issue with proton chassis. Most of the times, their cars drove and handled well. Their weakness is the rushed release of the non CPS Campro engine, and more recently the CFE being limited by the CVT gearbox.

The amount of poorly executed interiors beggars believe. How can the product planners be so far off the mark when it came down to interior design and quality?

It *is* kinda cheaper than the Mazda/Pug/Golf.

Even in Australia, where is enjoys NO TAX ADVANTAGE, it’s A$19k…with alot of kit.

The three cars you mention are all pushing A$30k

        It’s a different league.

If proton priced it at around RM95k driveaway OTR, then yes, do compare it to the above cars.

    Hi,

Even though the review indicates this car is good, comes with a lot of features, etc… something that everyone cant deny is, it is expensive (around 80k)

I see that, rakyat still need to take 7-9, or maybe 10 years loan to purchase this car.

Having said this, I will ignore this car, and use my current car, until I see a more reasonably priced car (maybe rakyat need to only take 4-5 years loan only). I suggest we all, maintain our current ride and avoid buying any new cars for some time and we hit their pocket hard…

If u need a car, buy second hand.

This sacrifice is for out younger generation…

When the buying stop, the killing can too…
If we work together, we can win this…

Don’t worry, sooner or later Bank Negara will imposed that car loan rule with 20% down payment and maximum 7 years car loan tenure.

When that’s happen, used car price will shoot up and Proton, Perodua at risk of closing shop. What a joyful day it’ll gonna be!!!

      Precisely.

Proton is having a hard time of changing its perception because few people would risk a 9 year loan and big monthly commitments just to “TRY” to see if Proton would deliver.

If cars were much cheaper due to less taxes, more people may decide to try, but the price differential between protons and other marques will also be closer, so Proton will really have to deliver.

Pretty sad case though. I had high hopes for this Suprima S. Perhaps I will wait a few more years to see just how good Proton is at turning around its quality.

I did sit in one the other day but not had the opportunity to take a test drive. Didn’t make me feel like spending 80K though….. perception notwithstanding. The interior is a complete letdown, despite all its improvement, it still look cheap and dated.

Now Proton, Hyundai and Kia are all in the same boat; all of them made horrible cars 10-20 years ago, but they make good cars today. It’s just that people’s perceptions are still stuck in the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s. Reality is that the Japanese might have been king back then, but today, they’re becoming the butt-end of automotive jokes worldwide.

            But that’s not my concern, all I’m hoping for is;

            1. The import duties reduced to 5- 10%
            2. The abolishment of ALL excise duty.
            3. The full privatisation of Proton and removal of all ties linking Proton to the government or government backed businesses/institutions.
            4. Proton re-enter China, South America and Eastern Europe, and consider opening up shop in India and North America sometime soon.

I only support Proton as a business venture, with a tinge of patriotism and national pride. Supporting Proton doesn’t necessarily make you a supporter of *ahem* Bankrupt Nation *ahem* Dr M *ahem ahem*. Because behind the closed doors at Tanjung Malim and Shah Alam, are hardworking true blue Malaysians who would love to see Proton stand eye-to-eye, shoulder to shoulder with all the other major players in the auto industry (God bless Syed Zainal Abidin). It’s these people who deserve the credit, not Mamak Kutty.

But Proton doesn’t need to match them to ”win”. They can’t even if they wanted to. Malaysia is just too small, and nowhere near as developed or progressive as South Korea. Plus, there’s no economy of scale for Proton at the moment. That’s one of the most important factors in business.

It’s just not possible for Proton to match Hyundai-Kia in the long run. That’s the reality. But like I said, they don’t have to. Proton need only be the best they can be, and hope to God that they don’t end up like Volvo, Ford AU and the entire British auto industry.

Hyundai, only half the age of Proton, has not only caught up to Proton but has overtaken them leap and bounds.

Bear in mind that when Proton was founded in 1983, Malaysia’s was one of the economic superpowers in SEA, stronger than South Korea.

          • Is your comment supposed to be a joke ? Are you trying to be sarcastic or something ?

YOU need to get your facts straight. The Koreans were making cars early as 1944, but their first passenger car came in the form of a rebadged 1968 Ford Cortina under Hyundai Motors. Kia rebadged the 1974 Mazda Familia, but they also made Fiat 124s under license in 1970. Hyundai eventually came out with the infamous Pony in 1975, Korea’s first mass produced and in-house designed car. Hyundai-Kia later merged in 1998.

Proton’s first car, the Saga, only came out in 1985, essentially a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer of that era. The first in-house designed Proton (the Waja) only came out in 2000.

So there, Proton was NEVER ahead of Hyundai-Kia to begin with. It’s smart of the Koreans to have two of their biggest carmakers join up, instead of competing against each other. In Malaysia, Proton has to compete unfairly against the vastly cheaper Toyota-based Perodua cars. And still, Perodua somehow qualifies for ‘national car’ status.

The only factually accurate thing you said (relatively) is that Malaysia was once richer than South Korea; this was true up until the late 70s. And yes, Dr M did not live up to his promises, and his Wawasan 2020 is still far from reality. The UN has calculated that Malaysia will only become a developed nation (in terms of HDI) by 2030 or 2035. South Korea was already considered a developed country in the late 90s. Japan in the 70s.

So you see, our case is quite complicated. But in order to get anything right, we must stop politicising everything. Let’s just do what we can, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst. In the end, all of us are merely cogs and gears in the machine of civilization.

But while Hyundai-Kia has moved upmarket, Proton is still in the lower end. It doesn’t matter as long as Proton makes good, reliable, fairly priced cars, overseas people will still buy. As a business venture, Proton can still remain profitable, but only for as long as China and India takes to catch up, and that’s like 3 or 5 years from now ONLY.

Anyway, let’s just wait and see how the Suprima (plus Exora and Prevé turbo) does in Australia. If it sells reasonably well there, that’s a done deal. If not, then GG.

      • I will excuse your comment because it was posted earlier that my previous one above, where I already explained this issue.

It’s true, Hyundai-Kia are still miles ahead, but subjectively, they’re in the same category as Proton. Meaning, public perception is not good because of bad past experiences. While Hyundai-Kia have moved up the ladder and are making more expensive cars, Proton is still focused on the lower end of the market. Not many people are willing to buy an ‘expensive’ Korean car yet, but ‘cheap’ Korean cars are no problem. But Hyundai-Kia doesn’t want that, they’re already focused on bigger ambitions. Proton needs to convince their customers in their ‘cheap’ cars first, before they move on to ‘expensive’ products like Hyundai-Kia.

Proton does not have the modal to invest in indigenously-designed (not rebadged) SUVs, D-segment saloons and proper sports cars like Hyundai-Kia. They will have to focus on smaller, cheaper cars first. In most overseas markets, Proton is still priced in the same range as Chinese cars. It’s not a bad thing, but this strategy won’t last. Proton will eventually have to move upmarket like Hyundai-Kia as well. This will take time and a lot of resources, but they’ll get there eventually.

Time? How long? Concentrate on making good cheap entry level vehicles. Just look at their proton day design and you know where the design language comes from.
How to convince if the design needs convincing. How to like if the vehicle is ” look, it’ll grow on you” type.
Why people opt for myvi instead of proton (entry level)?
It is people like you that say give them time, theyre coming. But when? you know the cvt is a liability, they reduced the engine output because of it. Why not spend more time to get a better gearbox or a conventional 4/5 speeder. YOu don’t need a half performing gearbox just to tell youre selling a CVT car.
          It is the mentality.
I have owned 4 different proton models just to try them out, and eveytime they failed me. More time?

Malaysians need to make up their mind. Preve was designed by a European firm (Italdesign), so it has that same “European” hand in the design as Hyundai-Kia. Italdesign is not an in-house firm, and the Preve and Suprima were modified extensively by Proton’s in-house designers, but that just means they get to test their hand at designing, right?

QC issues are still there, yes, but I think Protons are doing okay now, not so severe issues anymore. Hell, Hyundai-Kia cars were having significant issues right up to 2000s. And those Naza-badged Ria and Citra? C’mon, man.

I don’t agree. You simply can’t move upmarket without the corresponding quality.

Just slapping on accessories and gadgets doesn’t make a cheap car feel expensive, it just makes an expensive cheap car. The Forte used to do it, but the Cerato is different.

Contrary to popular belief, it takes the same amount of money to design a good looking car from a bad looking one.

They just have to ask the right focus groups. Many people here would be more than qualified to tell proton what is good looking and what is not.

Making cheap cars doesn’t really mean you have to make horrid ones. You can make good cheap cars. You can make a cheap car without feeling too cheap.

Case in point, proton’s biggest failings has been its driver-car interface. All automotive designers know that the driver or passengers contact points or reach, makes the biggest impression. The steering wheel, the door armrest, the door pulls, the seats, the indicator stalks, and HVAC buttons/controls. You don’t try to save money where the driver (and also most likely the buyer) would be intimate with the car.

Proton has failed on each and everyone of them previously, and only recently, just started to clue in. Even then, there is a lot more to improve.

I sure that not many people notice about that Satria GTI actually rated 4/5 by EVO UK. Satria GTI used to compete with Fiat Punto HGT, Ford Puma and Peugeot 206 GTi in the review. It shows that Proton does know how to build a good drive car if they want to.

I always believe that if Proton want to improve, they need to improve their workers working attitude first ! The main problem is their working attitude, if they improve their working attitude then the company will improve further.

I recall watching one of Top Gear’s episode in which a rally version of Proton Satria Neo was made to race with an Aussie performance car (can’t recall the model tho). Anyway the Aussie car quite literally ate the Proton’s dust notwithstanding the fact that the Stig was drving it.
My point is that the Satria is good enough to be usedby Top Gear, a known Malaysia car basher, in one of its ‘ challenges’ and it won comfortably. Sure as a rally car it is heavily modded but it goes to show that Proton does have the template to work on and come up with great cars.

Not really. I owned 3 cars from Proton. When I bought them I nvr compare in term of engine tech or anything. The things that piss me off it the quality issue i.e body sounds, accessories quality, uneven gap … etc. This’s a attitude issue which show from top to ground in Proton environ, quality & finishing is not ‘that’ important. I don say Almera, Vios are better then SpermaS but they’re very close to U get get what U expect whn driving home without need to go bck to svc center agn OFTEN.

Suprima still failed as global car:

    – no Telescopic steering
    – funny 1980s rear tail light design
    – no Auto-climate aircon unit
    – dashboard crying loud to copy Skoda European style
    – boring light/grey interiors (better use darker or black dashboard)
    – still lots of hard plastics (still the same crony kah? time to kick them out lah)
    – lack of chrome linings (better put in on door handles, window lines, interior door handles, aircon vents linings, dashboard linings)
    – no 20-years car warranty (whole parts)
    – no 20-years Free service maintenance (labour & parts charges)

Fix that all and I’ll buy one ship load of it Ha Ha Ha! :D

      1. True.
      2. Design is subject to taste. I think it’s rather nice, if a bit busy.
      3. False, the Preve and Suprima both has auto-climate air-conditioning.
      4. First people bash Proton for boring interiors and now they copy an upmarket style (VW/Skoda) and it’s a problem?
      5. Agreed, darker dash would be better.
      6. Kia also have a lot of hard plastic.
      7. That’s to your taste. Chrome lining is not to mine.
      8. If you believe a manufacturer will give you a 20-year unlimited car warranty… well, come here, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
      9. Also, I’ve got a tower to sell to you too.

I used to have few Proton 7-8 years back. I am very proud of Proton at that period.

But Proton product quality is low, wasting most of my time and money repairing and finding my own solution to solve all those low quality issue. Even service centre also give crap talk about the issue.

Why should we pay monthly installment for 7 years and still need to suffer? Make a change to other maker and you will notice the sudden improvement in everything. I mean everything. At that time, water coming into cabin is common for proton, but when you drive other maker, you will know it is the greatest joke of the car manufacture.

Owning a car should be fun. Not headache. I had tried few protons and thank you Proton for filling up my time with all the knowledge how to repair a car.

MAybe Proton is trying hard to educate people to understand more about car and try to repair them, this is their ultimate objective.

I feel sorry for Malaysians’ perspective. Many have limited car ownership experience due to Proton’s own fault at protective pricing. Whatever it was, I remember how proud I was when the 1993/94 Persona (Wira to Malaysians) was deemed the better car by Autocar UK compared to the Koreans.

Many who praised Korean cars today forgot their shambolic designs and quality of the past, only until recently. They were also reliant on Mitsu engines much like Proton was. I survived the ownership of a Kia Picanto from ’04-’12 through perseverance (and lack of resale value) until a VW checked in my front porch.

I went through three cycles of Proton ownership (Wira the high point, Waja the lowest point). So I’ve had a fair share of experience. Much like a failed relationship, this old ex-girlfriend now tries to court me back saying that she had changed.

Changed she had indeed….. but I’ve moved on. Still, I looked back over my shoulder and saw the advice which she took after I dumped her. She deserves another chance and I hope that if she will be loved by the new generation. I sincerely hope that Proton becomes the inspiration again to many, even if not all, Malaysians.

My first proton was an Iswara 1.3s back in 1993. Then changed to Wira 1.5GL in 1997. Used it for 11 years. The last Proton was a Gen2 CPS, bought in 2009 and sold off in 2012. I sayang all my protons and gave them TLC but still, there were parts that failed prematurely. Water entry into cabins, rattling dashboards, rust spots, power windows failures etc. to name a few. Just to demonstrate how sayang was I to my proton, I even changed almost the entire skin of my wira including the roof because of cronic rust spots. Not many people were willing to do that. My friends and relatives scorned at me and suggested to me dump it in the sea and turn it into a terumbu karang. Engines were problem free though(maybe because I always use semi syn engine oil and diligently changed every 5000 km) I am still waiting for a Proton that can match the performance, fuel efficiency and ownership experience of my current rides. I don’t mind swapping the badges.

  • Design-wise, I really have to give a thumbs up for this. The rear looks sleek and nice and yes, I agree that the high window line suits this more than the Preve sedan. This looks much better than its brother although they have the same face. The Preve looks so wrong with the high rising boot (makes me think of Fiesta sedan).

Notice that most cars with hatchback/sedan combos look better in their former form, say Ford Focus, Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta and also for this. Of course there are exceptions such as Mazda 3.

The centre console might be a bit too bland in my opinion, and the steering wheel looks huge and heavy. Others would be fine.

“The car itself is just fine – ranging from good in most key aspects (performance, interior space), excellent in some (ride and handling, value for money), to poor in others (build quality, top-end refinement). It definitely has the depth of ability as well as character to convert cynical Japanese and Korean car buyers.”

Too apologetic of a review. Glossed over the negatives of the car. For the past few generations of Protons, ride and handling has never been a sore point of complaint by owners. Neither has value for money since WE are all subsidizing it.

Its always been poor build quality. The have had more than 10 years and multiple CEOs to sort it out. Till today, they cant. This my friend is their downfall.

Although I myself really respect Tun M as a great leader, I agree that it is time for him to move away, let the new generation lead the path for Proton success.

Preve is fitted with Proton Ride & Handling (refer to Preve’s brochure) while Suprima is fitted with Lotus Ride & Handling. May I know why Preve did not fitted with the same Lotus ride and handling technology? What is the different between Proton Ride & Handling and Lotus Ride & Handling?

Personally, I think it’s purely for marketing, and management’s preference. Preve and Suprima were developed under different managements. Bottom line, the same group of people work on both models, and they both ride & handle superbly.

This is true. It baffles me as well as to why Proton backpedaled on using Proton Ride & Handling, as pointed out by a few journalists who realised this starting with Inspira. I think everyone knows well that Proton R&H team had worked closely with Lotus for so many years, and that they are quite capable nowadays churning products on their own. Perhaps it is more of a marketing thing, but then wouldn’t it lend more confidence to Proton as a full-fledged OEM to be able to say that they do their own tuning work? Maybe confidence in the local boys is still something lacking in the new management team.

I would actually like DSZ’s step of using Proton Ride & Handling as it bring sense of capability and strength to Proton branding image. To have directly/saliently associating to Lotus would not be a good move in long term survivability of the brand as it indicates dependency and lack of skills to stand on your own feet. I don’t remember Skoda highlights a direct association with VW.

If perception is what Proton needs to tackle, then its high time for them to come up with a Halo car.

I mentioned this before. Where is the Suprima GTI? Not a half arsed 138hp CFE with the same CVT but a blue blooded 5 or 6 speed gearbox with a extra bootfull of power and Price it well. To hell with making a profit on it.

If Proton can pull this off, watch their perception improve.

Proton needs to win the hearts of more diving enthusiasts (which are also usually more mechanically inclined, and more importantly perhaps less critical on items such as – ahem- reliability) that is where proton should start first…. especially with Lotus expertise.

No one wants to buy a slow sport hatch. It a damn right embarrassing nearly 2 secs slower to 100 compared with my old Satria.

No one wants to part with 80K for a “Sporty” Proton that doesn’t put the fizzle in their passion.

    As an aside,
Would love to see the interior with the rear seats folded. The Neo’s rear seats were a big faux pas…it folded flat but at a different height level. How the hell are you going to slide anything in?

The most major flaws in PROTON are their BUILT QUALITY. Materials they are getting from vendors (crony?) are cheap stuff! Easily broken, cracked, color easily fades, paint easily peels off. Plastics used are way too fragile. Believe me, if these built quality issue had been addressed well, no matter how the dash looks boring, or how the exterior looks f*gly to some, they can still sell and most importanly, people are willing to buy.

Because of the impression of having bad built quality, people are ‘worried’ when proton cars are going hi-tech. those auto wiper, auto this & auto that will probably be easily malfunction. To change those electronic part will cost quite an amount of cash. Even up until now people kept on saying about their power window. This Blue looks excellent on new the Ford Ranger, and my choice is right, I fall in love with the new Ranger in blue. Try to compare to the launch of Ranger on youtube. BTW, Focus got torque vectoring and park assist, not 30 year old Lotus suspension and reverse sensors. You are still more than 10 years behind.

We could not test the fuel consumption during this drive because it was a group convoy drive down south and with multiple media per car, there’s driver changes involved, so an accurate fuel consumption test could not be done.

We will ask for the car for a test drive again and look into the fuel consumption. Thank you for the feedback and your patience is appreciated :)

I like the Ah Peng radio ad as well. Puts a smile on my face each time.

The thing is, there are a lot of people (especially on this site) that knows a hell lot better than Proton would like us believe.

The Suprima isn’t a bad car, but it could have been so much better. Many of us have driven/owned much better cars, more importantly from overseas.

The problem is not solely due to the Suprima, the problem is Proton. It carried (or more accurately – still carries) a lot of baggage (some from its poor reliability, most from being linked to a GLC).

If you compared the Suprima to the overpriced and watered down cars we get here, of course it looks decent. But if taken against a standard, it is way still down on refinement…. quite telling for Proton’s inexperience or possible old ghosts in its closet. I’m not expecting VW levels of interior refinement here, but still proton has a lot to learn. I wonder who their focus groups are.

Bear in mind, the only reason, Proton has some thing to say about it 6 airbags now is due to the fact that they never had a car that was strong in safety standards so other marques took advantage of it and watered down their own products. There is also no excuse not to offer the Preve with 6 airbags, since the chassis has been designed with it.

Once you have Proton offering 6 standard airbags on all their cars, you will see other marques to follow suit. If anything, the one that got the ball rolling was in fact the Forte 2.0.

It’s a pity that Proton never operated on a level playing field, and as such was never run based on sound business principles. Instead, it had to serve so many other interests apart from being just a profitable car company. And when you are not competing based on merits and a level playing field, you cease to be competitive. Malaysian car journalists are generally sympathetic to Proton, you can pick any Proton review in the last five years and the story will be the same (just the model name is different): Looks OK, good ride and handling, but poor quality and brand image holds it back, but please give it try. Seriously, is this self-consolation good enough? I don’t think so because the competition has moved on too, some advancing further. Sums up Malaysia, the land of missed opportunities, doesn’t it?

Let me guess, you’re the type who drives with a Jalur Gemilang draped over the bonnet of your Savvy AMT? Careful now, it might overheat the engine, if the gearbox doesn’t melt first :P

  • The Saga design looks better than the Preve design. May be Proton should ask Peter Schreyer to design a new model for them. The centre stack looks plain and the whole dashboard needs to be reworked.

” However many corners Proton has turned, no matter how many comeback gigs it has staged, correcting public perception is its biggest hurdle”

Well said.. this sums up the review…

I fall into the “never buy Proton” camp
not because of the car, more because of the past and current history of the company.

It’s normal for global auto magazine to have long-term review, actual unit sent to journalist by car firm for few months.

Whatever the results it’s all revealed in full glory be it good or bad. Only then car buyers can make the final decision.

The photo was taken with cruise control turned off. With cruise control on, the revs would drop to around 2,100-2,200 rpm while maintaining a steady 110 km/h.

Can you all believe that proton is still using the same buttons for closing/sliding the side mirrors and the 4 way auto mirror button movements as my perdana which is 10 years old and I do mean the exact SAME buttons as per-the link to the picture below or as shown in the gallery pictures above.

    http://s5.paultan.org/image/2013/08/DRIVEN_Proton_Suprima_S_review_-093.jpg

What’s going on Proton, you got a 90% discount from the same vendor to use those button parts for all your models the next 100 hundred years done by some cronie back when proton was still under gomen !!!!

Simple touch of re-designing the buttons would go a long way to refine the interior of the car, even that cannot be done !!!

Why change if it works and works well? Change for change’s sake doesn’t always result in something better. Plus, it’s such a small component that there’s almost no need to change it when there’s:

          1. Significant volume discounts;
          2. Simpler to fix as it’s standard across all range;
          3. It’s QA’ed to hell and back;
          4. Such a small component that focus should be prioritized on other bigger items. I would rather have Proton care about their uneven fit and finish than redesigning something that’s already proven to work and work well.

I admit The Suprima S is a good car, which Proton is benchmarking against rivals such as the Golf, Focus or 308…but then these cars come with a sticker price of RM40k or more against the Suprima…

So, it’s not a level playing field to begin with…and people looking for a C-segment hatch would be hard-pressed not to choose the Suprima S with such a huge price advantage…

But then how long can Proton survive without price protectionism from the govt…?

Which is why the Suprima S needs to prove itself sales-wise in other countries…on a level playing field where pricing is concerned. But sad to say, Proton has failed miserably over the years with their previous efforts…all hype at the start, but later still end up as jaguh kampung…

I don’t deny the fact that the Suprima S will fly off the local showrooms…but the real test of the car’s future is whether it will have a similar impact in countries outside Malaysia…that’s where the real competition is; all in the same price bracket, give or take.

So if Proton wants to be among the big boys then they have to prove it; like the saying goes – go big or go home…

  • I am still not that impressed with the design. Hence, not because it is from Proton. I feel the design is king of outdated, especially the front grill area.

In terms of interior, the silver panel at the dashboard does looks a bit sportier and modern, but the overall design still looks too simple for me. The steering is hugemongous totally defeat the idea to be sporty and the speedo-meter is to plain, nothing exciting.

You might not like my negative point of view, but that is how I find the car. Kind of sad that Proton is still not up to the level where KIA or Hyundai is after so many years.

My comments on suprima S :-

    1) Hard interior plastic.
    2) Rough engine sound from 3000rpm onward. Lack of refinement.
    3) Backside look cheap and awful. Existing Mazda and latio sport hatchback beat SuprimaS anytime.
    4) lack of pickup before 2000rpm. meaning that you need to wait for 2 second for the turbo to kick in.

Good job Proton for starting to make better cars.

However looking at the design complaints from Hafriz above eg. lack of reach controls on the steering wheel, subpar touchscreen, ineffective LED in the rear, hard plastics etc. I get the feeling that Proton still has the economy car mentality when designing cars. I think Proton designers/engineers need to start designing higher end cars and reducing costs by either cutting specs or improving suppliers/supply chain etc. Adding accessories to an economy car just makes it a more expensive economy car and the whole thing feels subpar.

Most people have come to accept that the VW Passat is a lower cost Audi for example. I think Proton would do well to design a more premium product next time. But still good job Proton!

  • Well i do have high respect for Proton for their slight improvement on their current and upcoming models. That’s the good news..Now the bad newssss are :Come up with the cheapest ‘overengineered’ Inspira and eventually went down to underengineered ..Plagiarism happened to Proton when the Inspira did copy n paste from Lancer..Inspira is a pure flop in Proton’s project… Khazanah Nasional chair professor Dr Rajah Rasiah gave a talk at Universiti Malaya saying that ‘Lotus is a high-end low quantity market while Proton produces cars for the common market with low margins and high volumes’. So there was no proper technology transfer agreement between Proton n Lotus as compared to Hyundai-Kia…Hyundai at one point had made an aggressive n extensive transfer of technology from Mitsubishi..So he said,Proton may have made a mistake when it bought Lotus..Next ,Just because you put electronic safety gadgetry(6 airbags,ABS,EBD,BA, ESC,TC) n u got this 5 star from Aussie ANCAP rating , doesn’t mean that ur a suprima super star..I tell u what , take out all the electronic safety stuff n compare ur chassis strength with the new Honda Accord, Jaguar XF, MINI Countryman and Range Rover Evoque, with all their chasis…In any accident rating or ANCAP ,during the vehicle’s collision ,strength of the chassis comes first n then electronic aids comes later …Selamat Hari Merdeka…

preve/SS chassis is already very hard with HPF tech, about 1.8gpa. ancap is not all about airbags alone, it’s about chassis strength too.

inpsira is rebadged lancer with proton/lotus ride and handling. rebadging is common business practise among automakers. it’s not bad like plagiarism.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 21 Thumb down 0
      • Dude, that’s what i mentioned earlier , chassis strength comes first n then airbags comes later….crumple zone is the first priority for the driver n the passengers n also for ANCAP rating…..U mentioned about Hot Pressing forming tech thingy on preve/SS chassis…well dude, in today’s world, a lot of factors involve in creation of good chassis ..it’s not just having a stronger steel n thats it….the latest welding technique n process ,the right place of welding point, the structure of the chassis , the design of the chassis , how does each part of the chassis being integrated precisely in order to reduce the crumple zone….you just wanna strengthen the chassis by using HPF is not enough….U know lotus had come with this glued-together method where the chassis r not being welded n they applied it on a 1996 Lotus
Elise …in a way the chassis being bonded without welding ..the technique proved so successful the Lotus had produced over 23,000 cars with no reported failures ..Lotus had claimed that the big disadvantage of welding is that stresses are localized along a point or a line, which can lead to material fatigue. That method appears in 1996 !!!!..don’t tell me proton ignore this n focus too much bonuses n kenduri…another perfect transfer of technology n proton n wasted it ..of course this method, lotus applied on aluminium since lotus focuses on light weight material but hey , at least lotus n proton could work together n try on other material in this bonding process….

U know most of the rebadging i know has been successful cause they could able to bring down the price n the most important part is to maintain the quality of it ..look at Myvi …a successful rebadging of toyota passo with heavy cosmetic changes in it…Lancer was part of evo family ….when they introduce the current lancer to the masses in 2007 or 2008 i guess , they bring down to a family car category though it had a little ralliart gene in it…now proton made it even more family type by soften the dampers n change the suspension system n did some changes here n there claiming it’s suits for our country road …why the current Lancer didnt suits well on Malaysian road is it? At the end , Inspira sales were bad until giving heavy discount…and they trying to get rid of their 2012 inspira models… The Rakyat aren’t naive ..we know which car to buy n which car to be avoided….

I wish Proton went for a dual clutch gearbox instead of the annoying CVT transmission. Also they could update the exterior appearance of the gear lever and surrounding to make it look more premium. It looks pretty cheap to say the least. With only 138 hp and just average cornering ability it seems like an utter joke that there are the logo’s “turbo” and “lotus ride and handling” fixed on the car. However the rest of the car seems pretty decent and it does look like a step up for Proton. However the car definitely can’t be put in the same bracket as the VW golf or the Ford Focus. In fact I don’t think it can even match up to the mazda 3 hatch or the Peugeot 308.

Currently Proton only sub-con their quality build-up to vendor during development..so vendor will do ala kadar, sesedap rasa without thinking about implication on overall quality aspect (fit & finish). Futhermore Proton also too bossy, tak turun padang or gemba for investigating problem yang ada…

As an example for this new Suprima:
      1) Front Bumper clearance with Fender uneven..atas besar, bawah kecik
      2) Penutup minyak..susah nak tutup, dan apabila ditutup tersembul keluar..kalau mengikutkan standard Toyota, keadaan overall LEVEL mesti kedalam
      3) Driver glove box..clearance besar dan tak sama

I think the bashers here cant accept their cars i.e. vios and almera are totally ugly. To justify their ‘sport’ spirit, they put lotsa cosmetic so that it their cars sporty. Vios interior totally boring and plasticky. Better interior and they have to pay close to 90xxx for sportivo version. For price rage 70-80k, it’s a decent offer by Proton. Having the previlage to own an Integra and Focus Titanium, i must say the new Proton do make some of the bashers and me turn around. Kudos to them. – My 2 cents

I think Proton is missing the big picture here… What makes a brand great is how the car FEELS…

for instance my cars fitting is bad and had problems with it so have to be in sc a lot in the first year, then the noise insulation is bad, gear gets hot and list goes on, but it felt good as in the showroom itself I like how the door handle feels and sounds when I open it, how the seat feels cuddly yet free for me to cross my leg as I drive, then as I adjust the seat to my personal preference and closed the door, it felt effortless and sounds safely assuring. That captured my heart, and as I spent my time mingling with the interior, everything was in place, like the indicator on the right complements me as my left hand is free to drink and play with the center consoles, the cup holders beside the gear that is ever conveniently at arms reach, a charging and aux port right beneath my hands where my nestled phone can be charging. Test driving was uneventful as the car felt lazy but it all changed when the sales-agent showed me the sports function and the car sprint to life I was sold there and then.

And after 50k of milage I dare say that the car on occasion is a bitter crap but on other days it felt like I belong, as in the air-conditioner blows at just the right height to keep me cool as the sunlight give me a warm cozy sensation. Doubt I’ll be changing cars anytime soon, as I hadn’t felt the same emotions with others cars yet.

Mind sharing your personal experience of how you felt in love with your car?

  • I felt the review is not comprehensive. The review should complimented with the PROTON weakness that we found on Proton Preve especially the quality part.

As a working professional, I will still not consider to buy this car. Who know what is the quality problems after 5 years. Many of us take 9-year loan and may use the car for more than 10-year.

If car quality is a big issue after 3-5 years, then it is a nightmare. I would love Proton Preve drivers share their experience on this. So far, I know many quality complaints for Proton Preve.

Proton has cheated me for so many years especially I was young. I was “blinded” with the promises given by PROTON every time they rolled out new car. I wont consider PROTON again at least for another 10 years.

Some people say VIous, ALmera .. are poor cars. THis point is true because these cars are sold expensively after government charged huge car tax. Proton got very low car tax.

As a rational individual, it is fair to say PROTON is not able to compete Toyota, Honda and Korean cars at same playing field. Proton, please ensure your part quality and design are durable!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll buy this Suprima if Proton willing to give Lifetime warranty unlimited mileage and also lifetime free service (inclusing tyres, batteries, other parts and workmanship charges). It is justifiable and fair to all.

Any problem just send to Proton service centre. Use it until the wheels broke off. The only thing you pay is petrol costs, insurance costs and car loan costs.

If Proton care for rakyat then offer these all. We got no choice under protected market so in return Proton must be forced to provide free lifetime items to the rakyat. Sama-sama lah kita suffer baru lah adil. We die Proton also must die together OK!

Fuel consumption is a big expenses, so as the maintenance fee. I usually make decision based on these two criteria. Another point is I dont want waste time to go to workshop for repairing.

Proton, please make Proton Saga durable.Increase the safety feature for Proton Saga with increase price. Put ABS to ALL PROTON CARS. Make Proton Sage body solid as Proton Preve! although saga’s body not as rigid as preve, it is far better equipped in terms of safety items (airbags, reinforce bars, etc) compared to similarly priced viva.. at least drb-hicom reacted proactively.. when the 1st asean ncap result for saga came out poorly they immediately upgrade all saga variants to comply to 3-star rating without additional cost to the consumers.. i wonder why viva test was not available on the asean ncap program..

Bravo, good review. It’s nice to see Proton putting some efforts to improve the quality of its cars. I fully concur that Proton has serious image problem. I bought two protons i.e. Proton Saga 1.5 M in 1991 and sold the car in 2001 after corroded holes appeared everywhere on the body. I then bought a Waja in 2001 and that was when my real nightmare began. The fittings were so sub standard that I have lost count of the number of times I changed the power window and the handles of the door. People might say that the power window problem was history and ‘sudah basi’ but I can assure you that it’s very much alive. I sold my Waja last month after the final broke down of the motor of the driver side power window. My two other cars Smart for four (2007) and Kia Forte (2009) do not give any problem at all. It has become a family joke that whenever we see a driver opens the door to pay toll, put the touch & go card on the sensor pad, get or slot in the parking ticket, we will look at each other and sigh :”It’s a Proton !”

When you see or heard a car that has turbo, it does not mean for speeding. It’s good for uphill, over taking cars and so on. The respond towards the engine is for efficient. I agree with fredo.

THis is why in developed countries ABS and other safety features are so important for customers. Sadly, Proton does not put enough safety features on Proton Saga.

Indeed there are areas of improvement in this model and competing in B-segment market.

As we know export of Proton cars has been disappointment and I think DRB-Hicom is targeting this model export sale. It will be great challenge how this model fare in oversea market. If oversea sales continue to decline it would DRB-Hicom depend financial sustaining power of DRB-Hicom otherwise self destruction of Proton or perhaps another sell of Proton. Last resort to recall export model and to refitted with 2 air bags, remove all the frills and market price its slight higher than Preve.

  • Regardless of how good or bad the car actually is, this model’s sales will be doomed if they continue to run their ridiculously atrocious radio advert in English. I cringe each and every time I hear it. I certainly won’t want to buy this car and be associated with an Ah Beng (who is obviously reading from a script). I REALLY wonder how much that Ah Beng actually knows about cars.

when proton car is priced higher than many and still make good sales in 1st world country… then i’ll say proton “got it” and will get myself one…

there’s a reason why proton still priced so low in other country. we can brag all we can, but we know we won’t boy proton if we have budget of 500K…

ramai kat sini blame proton kaw2, x kira apa model launch semua kena condemn…yang menghairankan mereka yg byk cakap ni (noisy) x pernah pun beli kereta proton, even ada yg never go for test drive. I owned 2 proton cars, wira s.e and satria vdo model which belong to my wife, both cars aged over 10 yrs (beli thn 2003 & 2004).Apa yg saya nak share kat sini ialah,5 thn pertama pakai kereta tersebut, boleh katakan tiada isu langsung, kecuali pada thn ke-5 tu benda pertama problem ialah power window, lepas tu motor air cond pastu alternator pastu coil pastu tak de dah..semua benda2 minor standard la tu…yang penting bawak gi mana2 workshop barang (spare spart)ada dan harga jauh lebih murah compare tu H & T. Ini cerita pasal kereta yg da lebih 10 tahun bai…x keluar lagi da model ni, sekarang still boleh lenjan lagi bawak gi kerja hari2 60 km dari rumah ulang alik, tip top memang x de lagi la…tapi durability still ada…aritu check kat kedai dorg nak beli 15k for my wira s.e thn 2004, ok la…RV? Dorg yang bising2 tu, lantak dia la…nak salahkan proton sebab x dapat beli golf gti murah…phuuih!!!! x malu, duit x cukup nak berlagak pakai keta import…. Now its a time for us to change for a new brand car and ofcoz we’ll go for this new model becoz we trust and believe the proton have improved in a lot of things.

what? you say after 28 years only proton repent and want to be honest and loyal to its customer by giving out this shit?? Proton has been dishonest to consumers everytime when they launch new model/variant! say this and that good but in the end, they have a growing numbers of unsatisfied buyers! it happens everytime for Proton! If you like you buy la! talk cock and misleading people only! lastime people condemned saga when iswara come out, say ‘you guys are wrong, iswara is a good car ‘, then turns out iswara is a shit, come out wira then say ‘you guys are wrong, wira is good’ and put gt wing, then turns out to be shit, tiara you say is a strong car, then turns out to be super shit, then the ‘asia’s answer to bmw 3 series’ and say ‘you guys are wrong, proton is dramatically different with waja now’ and turns out to be shit, then come campro engine and say ‘you guys are wrong, this engine is superb and it is benchmark against bmw’ and turns out to be shit.. then persona gen2 same story, preve now got many users complaining also (google/go to sc la! malas ka!), and now come suprima s, same thing you say, later same shit happen, then what after suprima s, say again ‘you are wrong, this is really proton effort to quality car’ lah!

Test drive a test drive unit (super quality built to impress at first sight!) a few minute only become so clever to teach people on what to spend on their hard earned money!

say good thing here and there, accusing honest proton owners, misleading potential new car buyers, this thing all you do but owning one for yourself you refused. own one suprima s for 3 years then recommend to people, genius! Gossips here and there, what? you so good ha?

Great write-ups! Totally agree on this statement:

    Price: i dont care much
Design cons: front headroom too low, best for mini people, 5’6″(167cm)will hit your head either to roof or windscreen.
dashboard too height, cant even see the front hood means will get poor space judgement during parking or tight space.
rear sit is for kids only, adults mind your head at the door, old folks don’t even try it, it will break your back when alighting.
honestly the car is fully accessories to international standards but the anthropometric is rubbish.
Final; a car not for everybody

Now we can see many foreigner in paultan.
    Didn’t proud with national car.
Compare with korean and japanese they only using their national car.these is impact from malay kahwin indon, cina kahwin chinese doll and india kahwin india import.no original malaysian here…
Original malaysian will proud with national product and support malaysia company.
Now proton not only run with malay worker but all race.
Suprima s project manager was smart chinese malaysian guy.And now proton was under DRB and its better than without owner before.
If we focus on this model suprima s was better than preve and some specs better than myvi,vios,city,forte,altis,civic,focus,308 and polo
Its come with 5star Ancap to prove that this product good in safety items.
When you test drive even take short time you can feel this car have good pick up and easy to handle.
And when you drive for long distance its very steady and you can maintain highspeed 140 -160 when drive at highway.actual fc is about 8.5l/100km
For me suprima s is excellent car done by proton.
I also owned new exora bold and preve cfe.
Same engine but difference of feeling and engine setting.

  • “Proton Should Close Down” talks emotionally and when he does that, he can no longer objectively judge this particular car. IMO, objectively and all thing considered, Exora (the CFE, not the CPS), Preve and this Suprima are pretty good reliable car. I have one and it’s has been reliable except for some rattle sometimes from the dashboard. Other than that, never any problem. Of course it could be better but you will need to pay a lot more.

  • I am from Australia.
Just to give an idea on ‘relative prices’ of a few competitor cars to the Suprema S over there ……

    Proton Suprema GX (A) – $21290

    Toyota Yaris Sedan (A) – $19790
    Honda Jazz Vti (A) – $19790
    Kia Rio S (A) – $18290
    Suzuki Swift GL (A) – $17990
    Ford Fiesta Hatch (A) – $17825

Or compare to these larger C Segment Cars :
    Suzuki SX4 Crossover 2Litre (A) – $20990
    Honda Civic VTi 1.8 Litre (A)- $21790
    Mazda 3 Neo 2Litre (A) – $22330
    Ford Focus Ambiante 1.6 (A) – $22590
    VW Golf 90TSi DSG (A) – $23990

Now, you get the general picture on what cars should be priced like in Malaysia if it was a level playing field with no extra taxes etc to make locally made cars look cheaper then competitors?

Did very fast break and fast acceleration, no complains unless I wanted to test like Top Gear. No understeer. Don’t care about drop value as wanted to use for 5 years until warranty runs out.

I test driven Suprima S twice. I was quite impressed with the car overall when I tested it in the afternoon. Later in the night, brought my family to test drive to gauge if everyone agrees to buy it as our family car. Now I have reservation as the headlights are not so bright even for a new car. It would be great if they have the new white lights. My current 5 years old car is using halogen bulbs but is still brighter. So I am still considering. I believe my Perdana 2.0 bought in 1995 at $82K is still the best.

Most of the bashed above are more to proton, common paultan not wrotedown about proton here..its about suprima s..and most of the comment on tax I believe don’t do the readup..no more tax on local assembled cars, only ‘eksais’ so did it imposed to toyota, Honda and other local assemble..on the same rate…I had tested vios and new Honda city..got pros and cons but overall suprima made it at the same par..

Wahhhh so many comments. Anyway, I am not a big fan of Proton but I must say I like the exterior design of Suprema S. Looks much better than Almera, Alterage and even the latest Vios. But I am afraid I am just not ready to spend my hard-earned money on one. I don’t even have faith on Koreans so it is not about not wanting to support a local car. If Proton wants to gain confidence (if the car is indeed good) it should offer free towing if the car breaks down and replacement car while it is being fixed during the warranty period. This will help to make the public to reconsider buying one.

During the first month of my Altis, I had to send 3 times back to fix the booth, the hood and the wiper. They insisted to only fix it on week days and until I threaten to post my problems in Facebok. In my complaint I told them how disspointed I was of Toyota quality that I thought would have been better than the MYVII that I traded. Yes they reacted quickly so I cooled down. Unlike my mom’s proton that until now has a problem that even Proton doesn’t know how to fix (squeking break) . So, until Proton can get their act together and improve on their customer service, I doubt they will ever get the trust of Malaysians who can afford to pay for a foreign brand.

  • Proton started production in 1985(29years ago)We still see a lot of saga’s on the road as taxis. If more then 20yrs still good and running,it proves that the quality is OK.I owned a Proton Knight in 1989,after 10 months sold it because of the irritating cabin noise(door panels, rear speaker board and squeaky windows)Engine and performance is good except for dashboard, trims and irritating cabin noise.
Design of Suprima is by Italdesign Giugiaro(world famous car designer)and gear transmission is made in Belgium.Engineered by Lotus.Lets give Proton some space for breathing.Hope Proton will produce world class car like Satria neo….

I would consider Toyota Altis as a decent car. It gives 13.6km/litre consumption on average. It does 90kph at 1600rpm, 100kph at 1800rpm, 110kph at 2000rpm, 120kph at 2200rpm and 130kph at 2400rpm. There is an indicator called eco mode. It actually makes you drive within the eco range to give you better mileage and it controls your acceleration habits. At higher speeds the insulation against engine and wind noise is excellent. The Toyota engineers must have stiffened the suspension and this helps during reasonably quick cornering and going over rough surfaces. The transmission is absolutely smooth and quiet. If the Suprima can provide all of the above, then it is on the right track to better sales.

  • 80k Proton? on Jul 22, 2014 at 11:09 pm

I think Proton is going on the wrong direction. If you want to restore faith of the masses, you need to improve the car that most of them buy: the Saga and Persona. As long as those cars are bad, you’ll not doing anything good to your image, and it doesn’t matter that your expensive cars are good.

I have no doubt the Suprima S is a far cry from the junk Proton used to build, it’s just that the effort is misplaced. How many of us in this country will actually buy a 80k car (exclude company car of course)? Imagine the reaction if the Saga gets the same attention to quality and actually receive some kits and interior quality to match the Myvi, at a lower price. Now this would be an instant win.

Drive tested HRV and the new Mazda3. Booked them both. Cancelled HRV because it committed the cardinal sin, 4 to 5 month delivery. In other industry, nthe Supply Chain director will be sacked if experience this problem. Cancelled Mazda3 due to salesman moral issue. I already paid rm30k down payment and loan approved. Committed to me to get the car before raya, howver cannot deliver. I took my money back. Since then I tested other brands i.e Subaru, Perodua, etc, but not Proton because of the known quality issue and they were really berlagak when they dont have competition about 10 to 15 yrs ago. They ingored my complain of my wira. My proton service center for my proton knight (first car) really berlagak. After spent almosr rm1k for service and repair that they suggested, my car has to be towed back to them. They tore my receipr after a big argument. I vowed not to buy another proton.

Finally i gave proton a try out just for the heck of it. SuprimaS is really value for money. I bought it during promotion, got rm5k discount, 7 yrs warranty with full loaded features even Mazda, Honda hRV and city dont have. You got value for money for rm72k. Better than spend more than rm100k for mazda and honda.

Maybe they have changed a bit. I started to slowly forgive them. I know they are too slow to improve. Let them work at it. Just being objective when comment on the cars. I spent months test driven many rm100k above car brand, paid a huge cash downpayment but cancelled it, then I landed with a value for money Proton SuprimaS. Do you have any rm70k Mazda, honda, kia, nissan, etc. thar can compare to SuprimaS in terms of feature? How about 7yrs warranty?

      Dont think so.
