2022 Mazda CX-5 facelift debuts – updated styling, revised suspension, new Mi-Drive drive mode selector

After an impromptu reveal recently, Mazda has now officially unveiled the new 2022 CX-5 facelift, which gains a revised exterior, an updated kit list and chassis enhancements.

You’ll spot the refreshed SUV by its new front fascia that features redesigned headlamps with rectangular-shaped LED lighting elements within them. These flank a tweaked grille with a three-dimensional mesh insert, while the signature wing underneath has been made thicker and no longer extends that far into the clusters as previously.

Mazda designers also opted to reduce the number of character lines in favour of reflective body surface, hence the lower apron has been simplified as a result. Meanwhile, the rear taillights get a similar light signature as the headlamps, while the reflectors are now smaller and pushed higher up above the exhaust pipes rather than being beside them. New aluminium alloy wheel designs are also part of the facelift, as is a new exterior colour called Zircon Sand.

The Japanese carmaker also notes it applied some aspects of its SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture, which first debuted on the current Mazda 3, to the CX-5. This sees improvements to the vehicle’s bodyshell and seats for enhanced ride comfort, reduced fatigue and significantly less road noise, particularly when driving on rough surfaces. The suspension also gets an enhanced dampening control structure and increased frame rigidity, both helping to suppress unpleasant NVH.

While the exterior revisions are immediately obvious, it’s familiar territory on the inside. A notable addition is a Qi wireless charging tray that has already been fitted to some Mazda models, and you can find it nestled in the SUV’s centre console.

Drivers will also have access to a new Mazda intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) system, which provides them with a few drive modes to choose from; variants equipped with the company’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system will further benefit from an Off-Road mode.

The larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen is nothing new, as it was first introduced as part of a running update for the CX-5 announced last August. Depending on the market it is sold in and the variants offered, there’s a variety of trim, upholstery and contract stitching combinations to choose from.

On that mention, Mazda stated that all CX-5s sold in the United States will come with all-wheel drive as standard, so it won’t be possible to get one with only front-wheel drive for the 2022 model year over there. The company did not provide detailed information on powertrains, although it looks like the current crop of SkyActiv engines will continue to be of service.

According to Car and Driver, the most powerful option will be a 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit with 250 hp and 434 Nm when running on premium 93 octane fuel, or 227 hp and 420 Nm with regular 87 octane fuel.

The lesser powerplant is a 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol with 187 hp and 252 Nm, with both mills still paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, which Mazda says has been made more responsive.

In other markets like Europe, expect a 2.0 litre NA four-cylinder petrol (163 hp and 213 Nm) as well as a 2.2 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel with up to 181 hp and 445 Nm to be offered. Unlike in the US, front- and all-wheel drive should be made available to customers elsewhere.

Finally, in the safety and driver assist department, the i-Activsense suite has been updated to now include a new Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS), which helps reduce driver fatigue by assisting with accelerator, brake pedal and steering operations when stuck in traffic jams. The front Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH) have also been enhanced to provide finer control over light distribution.

Returning system include Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Lane-keep Assist System, Smart City Brake Support, Smart Brake Support and Driver Attention Alert.

    • Lol. i’m sure they have thought of that.
but it wouldn’t match with the steering column parts.

then you should just go get the CX-30 bro.

Rim play significant part to the overall SUV look, waist down to the ground.Mazda rim selection since the last gen up to this, below average and dull looking. The design spoke somehow make it smaller than the actual size.
Below is the best example of a clean match of dual tone rim and body color, 19′ look bigger:

  • Bermaz Can Do Better TBH on Sep 15, 2021 at 10:58 am

Considering Bermaz claims this is their biggest seller, they could at least update the Malaysian one already. We’re still rolling around in the initial facelift rims, with the small outdated infotainment system and 6 (!!!) terrible sounding speakers. And now Mazda introduced yet another facelift but why do I feel like we’re probably gonna get this either. I wished Bermaz did the yearly incremental updates to their Mazda cars like how markets in The US/Australia does. With their prices, it’s ridiculous we don’t.

cars aren’t like clothes.. where any bits want to change can just change on the fly.. impossible. there are regulations and technical considerations as well. i’m sure they are pushing it out as soon as possible. their prices are thanks to our G policies. its even more ridiculous that the G policies aren’t even reviewed. think on that first.

  • ongoing reduction on Sep 15, 2021 at 12:46 pm

just like the cooking show, a reduction here and there. Percentage of water, seasoning and ingredients for the right taste, in this case cleaner and reflective wayout.
    Mostly front end and some,
The wing bow no longer split into 2 like the X50.
Bumper cluster is now shorter (back to basic form).
    previous 2019 face:

Left-right lower apron is empty now, cleanest in this seg, no fog light, reduce more DE for better reflection.
tail-lens, unpopular decision, gone the signature trait of a sport car, the classic led in ‘circle’.
missing it? the circling rear lens, that thing coming soon, 2023-4 Lotus first SUV

  • Looking forward to this facelift arriving on Malaysian shores. My wishlist for the facelift as someone whose seriously considering an entry level premium SUV (200k-300k) is:

    – Better 360 degree camera and reverse camera resolution. Reviewers all criticized the low res cameras on the current models we have.
    – MRCC. No reason why the top spec at 180k (likely more expensive for this facelift) doesn’t have radar cruise control with stop-go traffic support.
    – Better rim choice for the Malaysian market. The current ones make the tires look smaller than they are (they are 19” if I’m not mistaken). The ones in the press photos look miles better than ours.
    – Option for brown interior leather would be amazing.
    – Option or standard across the board better speakers.
    – Hopefully the wireless charger comes to our market too.

Mazda is already making it clear to everybody they’re moving upmarket. Just increase the price to 200k and throw in these goodies!

Finally, this 2022 CX-5 can be used with OpenPilot, without steering lockout. SADLY, looks like Malaysian will NOT be able to enjoy this since there will be no facelift for Malaysian even though we assemble CX-5. BERMAZ goyang tolor!
