GWM Cannon previewed in Malaysia, launching soon?

Great Wall Motor Malaysia has previewed a duo of the upcoming GWM Cannon pickup trucks at the MAS 2023 event happening this week.

We first heard about these trucks sometime in mid-2022 when they were referred to as the Poer P12 for the more passenger-oriented blue version here, and Poer P11 for the white workhorse-oriented truck you see here, but they are now known as the GWM Cannon as it is called in the Australian market.

Under the hood is a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine that produces 160 hp and 400 Nm of torque, paired to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

The blue truck here (P12) has a bold front grille with a thick frame and horizontal bars in chrome, the P11 sports a “nebula” grille instead. The headlamps on the P11 are also shaped to look like “hawk eyes,” as the company describes them, compared to the more angular look of those on the P12.

Previously, the Poer P12 was advertised with a RM13x,xxx price tag while the Poer P11 was estimated to be priced from RM11x,xxx, but this was a year ago and with currency fluctuations, we wouldn’t hold firm to those previous indicated prices.

  • Chery partners Inokom, makes Malaysia its ASEAN hub – RHD R&D centre, exports to Australia

Chery partners Inokom, makes Malaysia its ASEAN hub – RHD R&D centre, exports to Australia

At today’s Malaysia Autoshow 2023 media day, Chery officiated its partnership with Inokom for CKD local assembly at the latter’s 200-acre facility in Kulim. The first two Chery models that will roll out of the Kedah plant are the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Inokom. With nearly three decades of experience in assembling vehicles of many world-renowned brands, Inokom is an ideal partner for Chery in our mission to take root in Malaysia and provide Malaysian consumers with high-technology and high-quality vehicles that are ahead of the curve in terms of design,” said Chery Malaysia country director Leo Chen.

Chen also announced that Malaysia will be the Chinese carmaker’s production hub in ASEAN, despite the fact that it also has local assembly in Indonesia. Products from Kulim will be exported to countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam and as far as Australia. All of the above-mentioned countries are right-hand drive markets, except Vietnam.

Chery’s Malaysia chief also revealed the company’s plans to set up an R&D centre for right-hand drive products, which will encompass regional testing, training and parts distribution. The initial models to be assembled in Malaysia will be ICE-powered, but local manufacturing of plug-in hybrids and full EVs are on the cards.

“As we have done successfully in many other markets, Chery is determined to localise its operations in Malaysia as far as possible. We believe this will bring us closer to Malaysian consumers to fully understand their needs and wants, not to mention contribute economically to the nation through technology transfer as well as the creation of jobs and strategic opportunities,” Chen said.

“We are also accelerating all other aspects of our localisation strategy, including recruiting top Malaysian talents in areas such as product, sales, after-sales, branding and marketing, and of course through our dealership network – we target to launch with no fewer than 30 dealers covering all major cities nationwide,” he added.

We’ve covered Chery’s return to Malaysia extensively and you can click on these links to learn more about the boldly-styled Omoda 5 1.5T B-segment SUV and the larger and more upmarket Tiggo 8 Pro 2.0T seven-seater SUV. Both will be officially launched in end-June or early-July. Also, the Omoda 5 EV will arrive by year end, while PHEVs are set to reach our shores early next year.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Neta has officially made its debut in Malaysia, and the first model being offered here is the Neta V. Distribution of Neta cars is handled by Intro Synergy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GoAuto Group which signed a deal with Hozon New Energy Auto.

Priced at RM99,800 on-the-road without insurance, the Neta V Deluxe is now the cheapest EV in our market. As part of a special promotion, the first 100 customers who make a booking online will receive a cash voucher worth RM10,000 to further reduce the price down to RM89,800! According to Intro Synergy, deliveries will begin in the third quarter of this year. If you want one, you can book it online now for RM1,000.

For the money, you’re getting a CATL-sourced ternary lithium battery with an energy capacity of 38.54 kWh that is good for a range of 380 km following the NEDC standard. The Neta V supports AC charging (Type 2) at a max of 6.6 kW, with a full charge taking eight hours.

It can also do DC fast charging (CCS2) at 100 kW to get the battery from a 30-80% state of charge in just 30 minutes. Users can also use the crossover to power accessories and electronic devices via the vehicle-to-load (V2L) system capable of delivering as much as 3.3 kW.

  • Perodua EMO EV study previews all-electric Myvi – up to 350 km range, 300 kW fast charging, 80% in 20 mins

Perodua EMO EV study previews all-electric Myvi – up to 350 km range, 300 kW fast charging, 80% in 20 mins

Despite having clearly stated that its move into electrification would first come via the hybrid route, national automaker Perodua has offered a glimpse of how its all-electric path could shape up down the road, presenting that vision via its Electric Motion Online (EMO) concept.

The EMO, which made its debut at the Malaysia Autoshow today, is an electric hatchback visualisation, but it isn’t a full-sized study, as you’d expect; while it’s built from clay, the concept is a 1:6 scale model offering an exterior design viewpoint exploring an electrified future.

It’s obvious that the EMO is, as its moniker suggests, electric, as shown by the swanky charger assembly placed along with the study. While there was no accompanying info, some details were offered via the EMO game simulator in a booth alongside the display.

Perodua EMO EV study previews all-electric Myvi – up to 350 km range, 300 kW fast charging, 80% in 20 mins

In it, it’s stated that the B-segment offering measures in at 3,895 mm long, 1,735 mm wide and 1,515 mm tall, with a 2,500 mm long-wheelbase, which sounds exactly like the current Myvi. With 95 PS and 121 Nm (rather lowish, yes) from its electric motor, performance figures include a 10 second 0-100 km/h time and a 160 km/h top speed.

Elsewhere, a 50 kWh battery offers the concept an operating range of 300-350 km, and via DC charging – at up to 300 kW, it is said – it takes just 20 minutes to get the battery to an 80% SoC.

Design-wise, the five-door hatch – which falls in line with the automaker’s usual fare – looks quite sharp, with short overhangs, but you’ve probably seen some cues elsewhere before, like with the funky grille and general lines.

Since it’s a clay model, there’s no presentation of an interior, but P2 has offered its take of what its electric dream looks like inside, and there’s certainly nothing mild in the layout. In it, the driver gets his/her own defined cockpit space, clearly separated from the front passenger, with colours helping to demarcate the zonal element further. Presumably, there’s no shortage of connectivity in the mix.

All this of course is just visualisation, and there’s nothing to suggest any of the styling cues or design elements will ever see light of day. However, the automaker says that an actual model for the concept will be built by the end of this year or early next year, so it’ll be interesting to see how that pans out. Whatever the case, the EMO concept shows that the automaker is already starting to work on the future. Who knows, this could well be a future-gen Myvi you’re seeing here, and an electric one at that.

  • Peugeot e-2008 previewed in Malaysia – 136 PS, 260 Nm, 50 kWh battery, 320 km EV range; launch soon?

Peugeot e-2008 previewed in Malaysia – 136 PS, 260 Nm, 50 kWh battery, 320 km EV range; launch soon?

Bermaz Auto Alliance has previewed the Peugeot e-2008 at the ongoing Malaysia Autoshow 2023. The all-electric version of the second-generation 2008 first made its global debut back in 2019 and is the first such variant in the compact SUV’s history.

In terms of specifications, the e-2008 features a lithium-ion battery with a gross energy capacity of 50 kWh (46.2 kWh net) that is good for a range of up to 320 km following the WLTP standard.

The battery powers a front-mounted electric motor rated at 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW) and 260 Nm of torque. This setup is good for a 0-100 km/h time of around 10 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h.

For charging, the e-2008 supports DC fast charging (CCS2 connection) at a max of 100 kW, with 0-80% state of charge achieved in just 30 minutes. There’s also AC charging (Type 2 connection) at up to 11 kW that requires about 4.5 hours for a full charge.

Design-wise, the e-2008 looks like a regular 2008, albeit with some model-specific touches like the “e” badging on the side scuttles. The car you see here is in GT trim, so the front has body colour accents on the grille and front fog lamps, while the wheels are 18-inch units. The interior is also similar with Peugeot’s i-Cockpit being the main attraction, although the switch-type gear selector is specific to the e-2008.

For now, the company did not indicate when the e-2008 will go on sale here – the original plan was a Q4 2022 launch – nor do we have any indication of pricing.

  • 2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro makes Malaysian debut – 7-seater SUV, 2.0T with 250 hp/390 Nm, June launch

2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro makes Malaysian debut – 7-seater SUV, 2.0T with 250 hp/390 Nm, June launch

As reported, Chery is making its public debut at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 event this week. Held at MAEPS Serdang, the show is open to the public from May 4-7. We’re here at the press day today and the returning brand has two cars on display – the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro. The SUV duo is kickstarting the brand’s return to Malaysia, and will be launching in June/July.

UPDATE: The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has been launched in Malaysia, priced at RM160k.

We’ve already detailed the Omoda 5 B-segment SUV, so here’s the Tiggo 8 Pro in right-hand drive form, as per the CKD locally assembled final customer version. As revealed earlier, we’re getting the latest improved version of the model, which is badged Tiggo 8 Pro Max in China, although the ‘Max’ suffix is dropped for Malaysia to simplify things.

This is essentially the same car as the one we previewed in Wuhu, Chery’s hometown, last month, but in RHD form. Under the hood is a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp and 390 Nm of torque. Power from the GDI engine goes to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and there are three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport.

2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro makes Malaysian debut – 7-seater SUV, 2.0T with 250 hp/390 Nm, June launch

This car differs from the Tiggo 8 Pro that was previewed in Malaysia last year. The SUV gets an updated look that features a new “galaxy” grille and the rear end sports a full-width LED bar and fancy T-shaped third brake lights. The wheels are now 19-inch items, an inch up.

It’s nicer outside now, but it’s inside that the Tiggo 8 Pro Max shines. The big SUV gets a contemporary and horizontal dash design featuring must-haves such as co-joined screens (24.6 inches in total, Chery says), inline AC vents and a high centre console. It’s all much neater now, and there are places where you’ll find Mercedes-esque details – think switches, open-pore wood trim and Burmester-styled speaker grilles.

The steering wheel is also new, with Chery spelled out instead of the logo. Speaking of logos, there are Tiggo emblems on the side of the central screen and the rear AC vent area. Kit wise, the airbag count maxes out at nine now, and there are a total of eight Sony speakers.

2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro makes Malaysian debut – 7-seater SUV, 2.0T with 250 hp/390 Nm, June launch

As for the rest of the kit, the list includes an electronic parking brake with auto hold, automatic LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lamps, welcome lights and multi-colour ambient lighting, electric front seats with ventilation/heating, driver’s seat memory, dual-zone auto air con with rear vents, powered tailgate, electronic panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility.

That very long list of kit is bolstered by a full ADAS suite that includes functions such as lane departure warning/keeping, blind spot detection, door open warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and front collision warning and auto braking (AEB). By the way, the camera system isn’t advertised as 360 degrees but 540. Before you scratch your head, the extra degrees are contributed by the underfloor camera.

So, how much would you pay for a handsome seven-seater SUV (check out the outdoor shots below) with such an extensive kit list? Expect to shell out around RM160k, with the final RRP to be announced at the official launch in June/July. What do you think of this Chery, in isolation and versus fellow Chinese SUV Proton X90?

  • BMW Malaysia, EV Connection unveil first Mobile Charging Vehicle in Malaysia – up to 20 kWh, 15 kW DC

BMW Malaysia, EV Connection unveil first Mobile Charging Vehicle in Malaysia – up to 20 kWh, 15 kW DC

BMW Group Malaysia has partnered with electric vehicle charging solutions provider EV Connection for the development of the first mobile EV charging vehicle powered by repurposed BMW and MINI electric vehicle batteries, shown at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 that is taking place this week.

The mobile charging vehicle is a prototype that houses 16 units of repurposed BMW battery modules which have a state of health of approximately 70%, providing a capacity of 20 kWh and which can provide up to 30 kVA of three-phase AC power.

The Nissan Vanette shown in these images is currently the sole prototype, and actually merely serves as a mobile platform for the charging facility; future iterations may use a different make or model of vehicle, according to an EV Connection representative.

For vehicle charging, the mobile charging vehicle packs what is originally a 30 kW DC charger that has been reduced in output to 15 kW – to prolong battery life – located at the rear of the vehicle, and thus can offer a rescue recharge to provide up to two EVs with enough battery charge to reach the nearest charging station.

In addition to rescuing of electric vehicles in need of battery charge, the mobile charging vehicle also provides enough electricity in disaster zones, to power up to eight homes at full capacity.

The mobile charging vehicle comes into the second-life battery programme that is part of the initiative by BMW Group Malaysia, who aims to divert all retired EV batteries for the expansion of their electrification possibilities. These will expand into high-voltage solutions to provider for urban charging hubs, mobile generators for disaster zones as well as for electrification in rural areas in the future, says BMW Malaysia.

“The repurposing of these end-of-life batteries from our electrified vehicles essentially places them back into the loop to continue serving the EV ecosystem, after they have completed their lifecycle in our vehicles. This recognises the significant value of the precious metals that are in our batteries, which are finite resources on this planet, and prolongs their use as much as possible before they are eventually retired,” said BMW Group Malaysia head of corporate communications and sustainability Sashi Ambi.

“EV Connection is honoured to be part of this unprecedented innovative initiative with a trusted automotive brand such as BMW in the development of this mobile charger. It is our hope that we will be able to elevate the range anxiety of EV drivers and contribute towards driving the electrified mobility revolution in Malaysia,” said EV Connection technical director Che Hang Seng.

  • 2023 BMW i4 M50 EV debuts in Malaysia – all-electric M with 544 PS/795 Nm, 510 km range, from RM430k

    2023 BMW i4 M50 EV debuts in Malaysia – all-electric M with 544 PS/795 Nm, 510 km range, from RM430k

First announced for our market last year, BMW Malaysia has finally given the BMW i4 M50 its Malaysian premiere, with the all-electric performance Gran Coupe making its local debut today at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. Joining the standard i4 eDrive40 variant in the local line-up, the car is the first electrified M-badged vehicle to be officially introduced here.

Aside from being fitted with BMW M 50 Years emblems as standard, the Malaysian-spec M50 rides on 20-inch BMW Individual Style 862 aero alloy wheels and is kitted with an M Sport package, M rear spoiler in body colour and a black rear diffuser insert. There’s also an extended Shadowline package that adds a gloss black grille surround, front corner air inlets and door mirrors, plus dark grey pinstriping on the grille and rear diffuser.

Inside, the variant features carbon fibre trim finishers, M Sport front seats, M tricolour seat belts and M Anthracite headliner in addition to an M Sport steering wheel. Like the eDrive40, the M50’s dash is wrapped in Sensatec faux leather, but ups the upholstery finishing to Vernasca leather, and there’s also a sliding glass sunroof, which the standard i4 doesn’t have.

    2023 BMW i4 M50 EV debuts in Malaysia – all-electric M with 544 PS/795 Nm, 510 km range, from RM430k

Otherwise, interior equipment is identical to the eDrive40. There’s a Curved Display panel with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch centre touchscreen, both running the latest BMW Operating System 8, as well as triple-zone climate control, keyless entry, push-button start and power-adjustable front seats with driver’s side memory, among others.

Also present is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a Qi wireless charger, a hands-free powered tailgate and a 17-speaker, 525 watt Harman Kardon surround sound system as well as the automaker’s IconicSounds Electric synthesised “engine” sounds.

Unlike the rear-wheel drive, single motor eDrive40, the M50 features an all-wheel drive configuration with the addition of a front motor. This produces 258 PS (or 190 kW) and 430 Nm of torque. As for the rear unit, it delivers 313 PS (or 230 kW) and 365 Nm, which is 27 PS (20 kW) and 65 Nm less than the eDrive40’s 340 PS and 430 Nm.

Nonetheless, total system output is way up, with 544 PS (or 400 kW) and 795 Nm on tap. These combined figures are available to drivers for up to 10 seconds using the Sport Boost function, and it enables the M50 to complete the 0-100 km/h run in 3.9 seconds, which is nearly two seconds quicker than the eDrive40. Top speed is an electronically-limited 225 km/h, up from the 190 km/h on the standard i4.

The motors are juiced by an 83.9 kWh (80.7 kWh nett) lithium-ion battery, the same as that on the Drive40, and so the higher performance means a sacrifice in operating range, in this case by around 80 km, with the M50 able to do up to 510 km on a single charge. Charging takes eight hours and 15 minutes using an 11 kW AC charger, while DC charging – at up to 200 kW – gets the battery from a 10 to 80% state-of-charge in just 31 minutes.

In terms of safety and driver assistance systems, the M50 comes with the full Driving Assistant Professional package, which has autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and collision prevention in its kitbag.

Additionally, there’s also adaptive high beam, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, acoustic pedestrian warning and Active Protection (similar to Mercedes-Benz’s Pre-Safe).

As for exterior colour choices, the i4 M50 is available in Mineral White, Black Sapphire, M Brooklyn Grey, M Portimao Blue and Sanremo Green, matched with either black (with contrasting blue stitching) or Cognac Vernasca leather upholstery.

Pricing for the BMW i4 M50 starts from RM430,210. Extending to a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service programme will bring the price of the car to RM445,800. As for the battery, it’s covered by an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty (whichever comes first).

  • 2023 BMW Motorrad CE04 Malaysian price, RM59,500

    2023 BMW Motorrad CE04 Malaysian price, RM59,500

Getting it’s official Malaysian price at the 2023 Malaysia Autoshow is the 2023 BMW Motorrad CE04 electric scooter, which retails at RM59,500. First shown to the Malaysian public in January this year, pricing for the CE04 is on-the-road excluding insurance and 120 units will be brought into Malaysia.

Using a frame mounted electric motor and belt drive to the rear wheel, the CE04 produces the electric equivalent of 42 hp at 4,900 rpm and 62 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm, the equivalent of a 500 cc engine in the combustion engine motorcycle world. Designed for urban use, the CE04 gets a claimed 130 km range from its 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery.

BMW Motorrad says the CE04 gets from zero to 50 km/h in 2.6 seconds in traffic light sprints, with a maximum speed of 120 km/h, which just about allows the CE04 to travel on a toll highway.

Charging is done using the CE04’s integrated charger utilising either domestic current, Type 2 wallbox or public charging station. Charging time with a typical 2.3 kW charger takes four hours and 20 minutes from zero capacity, while quick charging, assuming a Type 2 charger output of 6.9 kW, takes an hour and 40 minutes, or 0-80% in 65 minutes.

Braking uses twin 265 mm diameter discs on the 15-inch front wheel and 120/70 tyre, clamped by dual four-piston callipers. Meanwhile, the rear 15-inch wheel is shod with a 160/60 tyre, stopped with a single 265 mm disc and single-piston floating calliper with BMW Motorrad two-wheel ABS as standard.

The CE04 is held up in front by a single-bridge telescopic fork with 110 mm spring travel while the back is suspended by a single-sided swingarm and central spring strut, giving 92 mm of suspension travel. Tipping the scales at 231 kg (for comparison, the Yamaha TMax 560 weighs 220 kg), the CE04 has a seat height of 780 mm.

For the rider, the CE04 offers three ride modes – Eco, Rain and Road – while the fourth ride mode option, Dynamic, is only available as an ex-factory option. A 10.25-inch TFT colour display with Integrated Map Navigation comes with connectivity powered by the BMW Motorrad Connected App and includes turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle status and statistics.

Using the Connected app, the rider is able to view estimated time required for charging, and how long the battery charge will last and the distance it will enable the rider to travel. Other riding conveniences include a USB charging port in the dash, storage compartment with USB ports and 12 Volt socket.

The rider can also access a helmet storage compartment with courtesy light, and the CE04 comes with lighted flexcase, keyless ride and reversing aid.

  • 2023 BMW iX1 xDrive30 M Sport launched in Malaysia – 313 PS, 64.7 kWh, 440 km EV range; from RM272k

    BMW X1 xDrive30 M Sport

BMW Malaysia has officially introduced the iX1, which is the all-electric version of the third-generation U11 X1 revealed globally last June. For our market, the iX1, which is the first in the X1’s history, will be offered in a sole xDrive30 M Sport variant priced at RM272,370 on-the-road without insurance.

This figure is excluding the optional five-year extended warranty and six-year service package, but if you include it, the asking price becomes RM285,800. With each purchase, you will get an eight-year/160,000-km warranty on the EV battery, along with roadside assistance as well as access to BMW Service Online and BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW Privileges Card.

Featuring the carmaker’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, the iX1 has two electric motors – one for each axle – that are each rated at 190 PS (188 hp or 140 kW) and 247 Nm of torque. The all-wheel drive setup has a total system output of 272 PS (268 hp or 200 kW) and 494 Nm, but a temporary boost function bumps the peak horsepower to 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) under hard acceleration.

In doing so, the 0-100 km/h time is 5.7 seconds, and the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is capable of hitting a top speed of 180 km/h. The electric motors draw power from an underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery that has an energy capacity of 64.7 kWh, which is good for a range of 440 km following the WLTP standard.

    BMW X1 xDrive30 M Sport

For charging, the iX1 is capable of DC fast charging (CCS2 connection) at a max of 130 kW, with a 10-80% state of charge achieved in just 29 minutes. Alternatively, there’s also AC charging (Type 2 connection) at 11 kW that takes 6.5 hours to fully recharge the battery.

Visually, the iX1 doesn’t differ heavily from a regular, non-EV X1, with key identifiers being the dedicated “i” badging on the grille and blue ring on the BMW roundel. The M Sport package that comes standard adds a more aggressive front bumper with a hexagonal-shaped lower intake and prominent air curtains. Also included is the M High-gloss Shadowline package and satinated aluminium grille slats.

Meanwhile, the rear bumper sports a diffuser-like element and has a large blacked-out portion that mimics what you find on the latest 3 Series we have here. In terms of dimensions, the iX1 follows the X1, which is larger than the previous F48 model, measuring in at 4,500 mm long (+53 mm), 1,845 mm wide (+24 mm) and with a wheelbase of 2,692 mm (+22 mm). However, the height of the iX1 is kept at 1,616 mm compared to the internal combustion engine variants that measure 1,642 mm tall.

As part of the X1’s redesign for greater presence, the iX1 also carries a larger front grille and new headlamps (adaptive LEDs for our market) with inverted L-shaped bars marking up the daytime running light signature. Cleaner surfacing along the sides leads to the rear LED taillights with an L-shaped light signature.

Inside, the dashboard design is like that of the U06 2 Series Active Tourer, with the BMW Curved Display taking centre stage with its 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Both form the Live Cockpit Professional system and run BMW Operating System 8, with the latter including a personal voice assistant as well as support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Elsewhere, the raised centre console is without a rotary controller that is typical of iDrive systems. Instead, it only has a switch-type gear selector, controls for specific vehicle functions, a start button and media controls. Ahead of this area is where you’ll find the cupholders and a vertical space that integrates a wireless phone charger.

  • Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, 200 units only

    Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, 200 units only

Hello and good morning from the media day of the Malaysia Autoshow 2023, which opens to the public tomorrow. You won’t miss this one as you enter the event’s main hall, a matte black Proton X50 with yellow accents, an unmistakable R3 signature. The showcar’s plates read “R3 Concept”. What’s this and can you buy it?

Yes. Official details are scant, but we’ve gathered from the Proton booth that there will be a “Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition” that’s open for booking, and only at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. The carmaker will make 200 units of this special edition, basically the X50 with an accessories package.

    Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, 200 units only

UPDATE: Details of the final customer car have emerged, and it includes the black wrap job with yellow accents and stripes, R3 grille logo, R3 20th Anniversary emblems for the tailgate and cabin, R3 3D floor mats, R3 number plate holders and 18-inch flow-formed alloys. Refer to the image below. This means that what you see on the showcar might not match the final car.

We don’t know how much it is yet, and this showcar is not the final product, it was stressed. The car you see here is a ‘concept’ and it features matte black wrap with yellow highlights (on the lower edge of the body and the wing mirrors) and a grey stripe, a bodykit, a more aggressive ‘double wing’ rear spoiler (Binyue S-style) and unique rims. Behind the latter, you’ll see yellow brake calipers.

    Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition, 200 units only

Speaking of brakes, we have been told that there could be possible upgrades to the B-segment SUV’s brakes, suspension and even power from the 1.5 TGDi engine, although nothing has been finalised at this point. The X50 Flagship’s three-cylinder turbo engine makes 177 PS/255 Nm, while the other variants make do with a port-injected version of the engine that makes 150 PS/226 Nm.

Inside, the showcar sports alloy pedals in a signature R3 design, R3 carpets and the R3 logo embroidered on the front seat headrests. Once again, what you see here may not be what you will get, which could be more, or less.

Despite the fact that the specs and content of the Proton X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition aren’t confirmed yet, never mind the price, you can put your name down for one at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023.

Like what you see? We’ll post updates if and when they are available.
