2018 Proton X70 SUV – official details finally released!

2018 Proton X70 SUV – official details finally released!

We’re weeks away from the official launch of Proton’s first ever SUV, and a closed-door viewing at the company’s headquarters in Shah Alam earlier today finally revealed crucial details of the car, as well as the name, which is X70. The new model will be sold through qualified Proton sales outlets only, and bookings can be made beginning September 8, 2018, with a deposit of RM1,000.

To start, there will be four variants on offer, starting with the base Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Executive AWD and Premium 2WD. All variants will feature a 1.8 litre TGDi turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 181 hp and 285 Nm of torque.

Design-wise, it’s pretty much the same as we’ve come to expect, seeing the number of times the X70 has been leaked. Up front, it gets a unique winged grille design with three horizontal bars that converge into the Proton badge, and the entire piece is encased in thick chrome surrounds. Very little cosmetic changes have actually been made, because the bulk of work has been to convert it from left-hand drive to right-hand drive – the Boyue is the first Geely model to be converted to RHD.

Proton’s head of design, Azlan Othman, had earlier said the reason for the minor cosmetic tweaks is to speed up the X70’s market introduction, but more visual changes will come in the CKD version, which is slated for a mid-2019 arrival.

2018 Proton X70 SUV – official details finally released!

For now, the X70 gets keyless entry (with active touch sensors on the front door handles) with push-start, electrically foldable wing mirrors, LED projector headlights with LED DRLs, LED fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels with Hankook Dynapro HP2 (225/60 R18) tyres, and dark-tinted LED tail lights. As with all recent Proton models, both the head- and tail-lights feature Proton lettering.

Inside, again, things remain fairly similar to the Geely Boyue facelift, on which the X70 is based on. There’s brown Nappa leather on the seats, door card inserts and steering wheel (on the Premium model, Exec get black synthetic leather), automatic dual-zone climate control and a widescreen 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (1,920 x 720 pixels) with 4G connectivity. Auto headlights and wipers are also on.

There’s also voice recognition support (designed with Malaysian English in mind), as ‘demonstrated’ by our premier Tun Dr Mahathir, as well as a fully-digital and configurable instrument panel, which is a first for the Proton brand.

Decorative trim and material include brushed silver and wool inlays on the dash and silver grab handles. There’s also an Infinite Weave design element found on the door handles and speaker grilles. Elsewhere, there are rear air-con vents and a full-sized panoramic glass roof, but the latter is only available on the top variant.

2018 Proton X70 SUV – official details finally released!

According to Yang Jun, VP of group engineering at Geely, the X70 will not be short on technology and equipment. Other features include a 360-degree camera, which shows a 3D view of obstacles surrounding the car, as well as a forward-facing camera at the top of the windscreen to enable the car’s driver assist systems. These enable functions such as autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The X70 will also come with a blind spot monitor.

Also on are the “Smartphone Remote Control” and “Smart Air Purifier” features, the latter in reference to the “Air Cleaner” system that can be found above the rear air-con vent between the front seats. A tyre pressure monitoring system is also on the equipment list, and safety kit will include six airbags.

Other amenities include USB charging ports for the front passenger seat, two more at the back of the centre console, as well as another port behind the rear-view mirror, for those who want to install driving video recorder (dashcam). On the top-spec Premium, the front passenger seats are powered with Toyota Camry-like shoulder controls to boot, while a rear subwoofer is present under the boot floor, sandwiched between the space-saver tyre.

In terms of performance, the output seen on the 1.8 litre TGDi turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – which uses Shell oil as the recommended lubricant – is the highest tune available for the petrol-powered Boyue, and the mill is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive versions to be had. According to the energy consumption label found on cars in China, combined fuel consumption for a TGDi front-wheel-drive Boyue weighing 1,690 kg is 7.8 litres per 100 km (12.8 km/l).

2018 Proton X70 SUV – official details finally released!

So far, the available exterior colour options as we can tell are Flame Red, Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey and Cinnamon Brown. As for the name, Proton adds that ‘X70’ was the most popular choice from almost 90,000 participants that voted in the company’s poll, accounting for 60% of the total votes.

So far, the national automaker has 77 test vehicles in its fleet and has performed up to 300 vehicle tests and over 500 vehicle system tests on the car. Approximately 750,000 man-hours have gone into the making of this model, and the test mule has clocked over two million kilometres of reliability testing.

As for pricing, the automaker isn’t saying anything yet on how much the X70 will cost, so everyone will just have to wait for that to be revealed.

So, what do you think of the Proton X70? Is it living up to the hype, and has it met or surpassed your expectations? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to stay tuned for more updates.

It just took 6 months for Li Chunrong to turn around Proton what local CEOs could not do in 20 years.

Bravo Li Chunrong. You have brought so much of positive change

Also thank you to local engineers who had to reverse engineer that platform for RHD conversion, and I predict they will also endow the X70 with better suspension/chassis tuning for better ride and handling than the donor platform- it’s becoming their hallmark like the PV6 Vs Eterna, Inspira Vs Lancer- P1 versions just rode better.

Proton should actually feel very shy that a younger company of 12 years like Geely can show Proton how to make a good car

Even dumber, still don’t realise it’s a failure, throw another few millions for Season 2 of the same old thing. All the while, most of their lineup still old models and poor safety. The millions wasted on the Vios Racing should be passed on to buyers with better specced cars or rebates instead.

So long as Proton can become profitable and doesn’t require government aid, that’s fine. The ckd production can also keep local plant running, provide job opportunities to downstream parts supplier, while we get to have more choices of affordable quality car. Afterall, Boyue has been selling well in China.

dari segi teknologi, kemasan, handling, power..torque..aku serius cakap this is the best berbanding kereta-kereta lain dalam segmen dia..

Pesaing Alza Baojun 360..cek la speks dia..oklah..malas nk taip bebanyak.

One model a year is just nice in term of strategy and Geely equip the car well. Most of the SUV competitor going to face drop in sales such as CRV, CX5, Tiguan and 3008. Time really flies. I still remember the official Proton-Geely ‘wedding’ ceremony like it happened a month or two back. But it’s been about a year now, and although it may not yet be apparent to the public, I’m sure a lot has changed within Proton since then.

I’m sure many Malaysians are looking forward to seeing and experiencing the new Proton X70 in the metal. After all, if Dr. M gave it a ‘thumbs up’, that means it must be pretty impressive. It is should be, seeing how the X70 brings a ton of new USPs to the table, USPs from premium and luxury cars, USPs which will likely become ‘firsts’ in its price range. Remember how everyone was blown away by the ‘futuristic’ autonomous safety in the new Myvi ? The X70 will do the same, and then some. I think the X70’s safety features alone will put most Malaysian-spec B, C, D and even E segment cars to shame.

Proton can use the same marketing tactics Tesla uses. Tesla knows that they cannot compete with BMW and Mercedes in terms of branding, quality and refinement, so they make sure to give their cars the latest cutting edge technology to compensate. All Tesla cars have that ‘wow’ factor, even though they are actually very questionably engineered (the again, so are BMWs and Mercs these days).

The new X70 will face some anti-China stigma not just locally, but also abroad. Combine that with Proton’s own pre-existing stigma, and the X70 has the odds stacked against it. But if Proton-Geely continues to work hard and smart, they will surely be able to win back a sizeable customer base. Some Malaysians will forever hate Proton no matter what you say or do; I say don’t waste resources on these ‘lost cause’ people, focus on your existing paying customers, reassure them that they made the right choice when they invested in a new Proton, despite the negative stigma. But of course, I’m sure Proton-Geely are already well aware of all of this, as evident by their recent aftersales push and rebranding. But it will take time until customers begin noticing the improvements.

Anyway, it’s been nervous waiting, but I’m glad to see Proton-Geely’s turn-around has thus far gone according to plan and remained on schedule despite all kinds of external instabilities and changes. Nonetheless, I still wish to remain cautiously-optimistic, I don’t want to jump on the ‘hype train’. I would rather have modest expectations and be pleasantly surprised (new Persona), than to have high expectations and be utterly disappointed (Prevé). Pragmatic approach, nothing more nothing less. I wish Proton-Geely all the best and godspeed.

The best car Proton has come up with with still Suprima S. Although the FC is abit high due to 8.9:1 compression ratio, everything else about the car is good, especially the Lotus handling.

I won’t buy anything with Geely platform. I think the Lotus platform is better.

Also, what happened to the new 180 HP 1.5 litre turbocharged engine developed by Proton and Ricardo? They spend 600 million for the R&D. I want to see that engine in another car with Lotus handling, but Proton no longer has Lotus. Bye bye Lotus handling?

  • I saw many Boyues in Hangzhou and by now it should be a proven technology. What took me by surprise was the total conversion of petrol to electric scooters. So many of them running around and they don’t make any sound. My bet is electric car is coming up next from Geely. So no need for another 3rd Msian Car please !

Only fools will buy lousy Honda quality with Donkey Honda models designs and ugly, junk and outdated for Honda models designs as well as Honda service quality is very terrible and even Honda assembly quality is also very terrible too for all Honda models. Only smart people will buy Proton, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota, Kia with more attractive, inspiring and more fashionable for Proton design, Mazda design, Toyota design, Kia design, BMW design, Mercedes design and Volvo design as well as service quality and assembly quality for Proton, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota and Kia is improving, well progressed and maintainable.

  • Building customer’s confidence is a tedious process. This one part of a marketing strategies. In such a short period Proton vendors has turned to embrace the 3s n 4s systems which are a customer’s friendly move. It translates strong support of service, parts, insurance claims of damage cars cause by accident, spray painting etc these will pose a better fortune to Proton.
No one from the previous management could ever do that because they are lacking in experience n entrepreneurship to drive the business to further to realise the goal.
We wish the current management will succeed within 2 years n take Proton to greater height.

12.8 km/l for a 5 seater SUV? Too bad. Even the Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 l is 13 km/l, while the 2.0 l model is 13.7 km/l on paper, claims Mitsubishi. In real life, some even reached 14+ km/l kn highway. It’s a heavier 7 seater SUV. In this segment, utmost power & top speed is secondary to safety & practicality. It’s a family SUV.

The 2.4 Outlander has 165 hp and 222 Nm of torque.
The X70 will have 181 hp, and 285 Nm of torque. For that 2% increase in fuel consumption, you get 10% more power and 28% more torque. Say that the X70 fuel consumption figure is a lie, it’s still a given that it needs to be more powerful (and consume more fuel) to haul the extra weight. As to why it’s heavier, we won’t know until full spec list is provided. The X70 weighs at least 160kg more than the Outlander. Both cars have the same power:weight ratio, but the X70 clearly wins in torque.

Speaking of safety, Boyue/X70 still has all the safety features the Outlander does, but with a bonus of better handling. Outsider reviews all agree on Boyue’s good chassis tuning and steering. Outlander however is typical of its size and weight, and for all that “softness” it’s not even as comfortable as the better handling CR-V.

Looks great! Even though it’s a rebadge, this is amazing for Proton to offer as their first SUV. Great specifications, features and loving how it looks from the inside. For those who are worried that it’s underpowered – the torque figures matters more than the horsepower and realistically, most SUV owners in Malaysia won’t take it offroading. All-in-all, I’m very pleased to see this. With a proper price point, it can penetrate the market very well.

We wanted to know the price for each specs. If it is reasonable price ( Below RM 80 kilo ) compared to other established SUV brand in the market then it is meaning a lot for us. If it is nearly the same with others SUV, there is no point to have it.

  • the AWD should offer in premium model as well instead of just for exec trim. typically SUV is high center of gravity, AWD become quite crucial when facing extreme condition. where malaysia rainpour and flooding nowadays seems getting worse.

Let’s be honest, yes an all wheel drive is offered but how can a vehicle whose drive train disengages all wheel drive at 40 KPH really call itself AWD. I for one was looking forward to buying one but not now. What a disappointment it turned out to be. I hope that the new alliance with Geely does not go the same way as the old Proton:- Full of promises but short on delivery
