    2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV launched in Malaysia – 7-seater X90 rival with 2.0T, 256 hp, 390 Nm; RM160k

Finally, Chery’s return is official. Moments ago, Chery Malaysia officially launched the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs as the first models in a new era of the brand in Malaysia. Click here to read about the Omoda 5 – this post focuses on the Tiggo 8 Pro. TLDR: there’s a single Luxury variant priced at RM159,800.

It has been a long gestation – our exclusive in December 2021 broke the news of Chery’s re-entry into our market, and the Chinese carmaker’s first official event here happened in October 2022. Since then, we’ve brought you previews of what’s coming next from the company’s base in Wuhu, as well as first look posts of the local spec Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro. All of that culminates in tonight’s ‘grand launch event’.

In case you’re wondering about the ‘return’ part, or aren’t old enough to remember, Chery was brought in by Tan Sri Cam Soh Thiam Hong’s Alado in the noughties and we had models like the QQ minicar, Tiggo SUV and Eastar MPV in the ‘Chery Alado’ era. We even had a world debut of a Chery here in 2015!

No local partner this time around, as Chery has decided to do things its own way in a market that’s very difficult to penetrate. Even the mighty BYD has the backing of major player Sime Darby. Also, there will be 31 dealerships at launch, with more opening by the end of 2023. That’s a staggering number that’s probably unprecedented in the Malaysian auto market, based on our memory.

Another sign of bravery is the fact that the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro are launching in CKD form, with no initial small CBU batch to ‘test the waters’ but local assembly at Inokom in Kulim right from the start. This is no small undertaking, as even Proton – with its huge plant, established vendor network and national car status – kickstarted sales of Geely SUVs with CBUs.

We’ve had a few looks at the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro now, and it still looks really good, both inside and out. We first brought you live coverage from Wuhu, Chery’s hometown, before covering the SUV’s local debut at the Malaysia Autoshow in May. We then gave the D-segment SUV our usual 360-degree outdoor gallery and walk-around video treatment.

    2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV launched in Malaysia – 7-seater X90 rival with 2.0T, 256 hp, 390 Nm; RM160k

By the way, we’re getting the latest improved version of this seven-seater SUV, which is badged Tiggo 8 Pro Max in China, although the ‘Max’ suffix is dropped for Malaysia to simplify things – it’s the only Tiggo 8 we’re going to get anyway. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 256 hp and 390 Nm of torque. Power from the GDI engine goes to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and there are three drive modes – Eco, Normal and Sport.

By the way, today’s Tiggo 8 Pro differs from the one that was previewed in Malaysia last year. The SUV gets an updated look that features a new “galaxy” grille and the rear end sports a full-width LED bar and fancy T-shaped third brake lights. The wheels are now 19-inch items, an inch up, wrapped with 235/55 tyres. We have some night shots for you to see the LED signatures, and the illuminated logo.

It’s a fair bit nicer outside now, but it’s inside that the latest Tiggo 8 shines. The big SUV gets a horizontal dash design featuring contemporary cues such as conjoined screens (24.6 inches in total), inline AC vents and a high centre console. It’s all much neater now, and there are places where you’ll find Mercedes-esque details – check out the switches, open pore wood-style trim (no texture though) and speaker grilles that mimic Merc’s Burmester items.

    Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Interior

The steering wheel is also new, with Chery spelled out instead of the logo. Speaking of logos, there are Tiggo signatures on the side of the central screen and the rear AC vent area, in classical font. Kit wise, the airbag count maxes out at nine now (we’ll explain the odd number later), and there are a total of eight Sony speakers.

As for the rest of the kit, the list includes an electronic parking brake with auto hold, automatic LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lamps, welcome lights and multi-colour ambient lighting, electric front seats with ventilation/heating, driver’s seat memory, dual-zone auto air con with rear vents, hands-free powered tailgate, electronic panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charger and (wired) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also proximity sensor keyless entry, like Honda’s walk-away auto lock.

That very long list of kit is bolstered by a full ADAS suite that includes functions such as lane departure warning/keeping, blind spot detection, door open warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and front collision warning with auto braking (AEB). Parking is aided by an all-around camera.

A note on airbags – on top of the usual six, the Tiggo 8 Pro adds on a driver’s knee bag and rear side airbags. The latter is very rare in Malaysia, and is typically seen only on luxury cars.

For those wondering how this compares to the Proton X90 – which is also a three-row SUV designed in China – the tiger-badged car tops out at RM152,800 for the Flagship, but it’s powered by a 1.5T three-cylinder mild hybrid system with 190 PS/300 Nm. The Chery’s 2.0T outguns it with 256 hp/390 Nm.

Size wise, the Tiggo 8 Pro is 4,722 mm long and 1,860 mm wide, which is 108 mm shorter and 40 mm narrower than the X90. The Chery’s 2,710 mm wheelbase is 95 mm shorter than the Proton’s. So, the X90 has a bigger footprint, which this writer wouldn’t have gueesed – the Chery looks beefy. As for boot space, it’s 193 litres with all three rows of seats in place, or 892 litres with the third row folded. Max volume is 2,101 litres with all seats down.

Colour options are limited to Dark Black and Khaki White, which means that we miss out on the gorgeous deep green colour of the preview unit, which shimmers under the sun. Once again, the Tiggo 8 Pro is priced at RM159,800.

Chery Malaysia also unveiled its warranty package tonight, and it’s seven years or 150,000 km for the vehicle, plus five years of ‘free service’ (alternating, free labour). The engine warranty is a whopping 10 years or one million km. But the catch is that the headline-grabbing engine warranty is for the first 3,000 customers. After that it reverts to seven years/150,000 km, joining the rest of the vehicle. But if you really want the 10y/1m package, top up RM2,000 for an extended warranty package.

Proton X90 aside, the Tiggo 8 Pro’s local rivals include the Mazda CX-8, the just-launched Toyota Innova Zenix and fourth-gen Kia Sorento, although the latter starts from above RM200k. The next-gen Honda CR-V too, when it comes. The C-SUV stalwart has grown in size and is available elsewhere with an optional third row. So, what do you think of the Tiggo 8 Pro’s looks and price/package versus this bunch?

  • 2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro walk-around video – 7-seater SUV, 250 hp 2.0T, RM165k, better than Proton X90?

We’ve had a few looks at the 2023 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro now, and it still looks really good, both inside and out. We first brought you live coverage from Wuhu, Chery’s hometown, before covering the SUV’s local debut at last month’s Malaysia Autoshow. We then brought you our usual 360-degree full gallery where the Chery’s deep green paint gleamed under the sun.

UPDATE: The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has been launched in Malaysia, priced at RM160k.

Now, here’s a full walk-around video, where Hafriz Shah takes you on a tour of the Tiggo 8 Pro. Count him impressed. “It has an amazing blend of looks, quality, performance, and most of all, sheer value,” our man said, adding that the Chery “really does look and feel like a proper premium product both outside and inside”. Much more so than the Proton X90 and Honda CR-V, in fact.

The Tiggo 8 Pro you see here is a CBU import in right-hand drive form, as per the CKD locally assembled final version that customers will be getting. By the way, we’re getting the latest improved version of the SUV, which is badged Tiggo 8 Pro Max in China, although the ‘Max’ suffix is dropped for Malaysia to simplify things – it’s the only Tiggo 8 we’re going to get anyway.

    Chery Tiggo 8 Pro

This is essentially the same car as the one we showed you from Wuhu, Chery’s hometown, in April, but in RHD form. Under the hood is a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp and 390 Nm of torque.

The wheels are now 19-inch items, an inch up, wrapped with 235/50R19 tyres. We have some night shots for you to see the LED signatures, and the illuminated logo.

It’s nicer outside now, but it’s inside that the Tiggo 8 Pro Max shines. The big SUV gets a contemporary and horizontal dash design featuring must-haves such as co-joined screens (24.6 inches in total, Chery says), inline AC vents and a high centre console. It’s all much neater now, and there are places where you’ll find Mercedes-esque details – think switches, open-pore wood trim and Burmester-styled speaker grilles.

    Chery Tiggo 8 Pro

The steering wheel is also new, with Chery spelled out instead of the logo. Speaking of logos, there are Tiggo emblems on the side of the central screen and the rear AC vent area. Kit wise, the airbag count maxes out at nine now, and there are a total of eight Sony speakers.

Sharp graphics, as you’ll see in the gallery below.

That very long list of kit is bolstered by a full ADAS suite that includes functions such as lane departure warning/keeping, blind spot detection, door open warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and front collision warning and auto braking (AEB). By the way, the camera system isn’t advertised as 360 degrees but 540. Before you scratch your head, the extra degrees are contributed by the underfloor camera.

So, the Tiggo 8 Pro looks properly premium (it was Chery’s flagship SUV until the recent debut of the Tiggo 9) and has a very long equipment list. The remaining big questions are when and how much?

You’d have heard by now that this is one of two SUVs that will spearhead Chery’s comeback in Malaysia (the other is the Omoda 5) and the official launch will be held late this month or early July. As for the price, expect a sticker of around RM165k, with the final RRP to be announced at the official launch.

The Proton X90 – also a three-row SUV designed in China – tops out at RM152,800 for the Flagship, but it’s powered by a 1.5T mild hybrid system with 177 PS/255 Nm. The Chery’s 2.0T outguns it with 250 hp/390 Nm. We’re not talking about a few horses here and a couple of Nms there.

Dimensions: Chery Tiggo 8 Pro vs Proton X90

If you’re wondering how both SUVs compare in size, the Tiggo 8 Pro is 4,722 mm long and 1,860 mm wide, which is 108 mm shorter and 40 mm narrower than the X90. While you’re at it, check out the Mazda CX-8 and next-gen Honda CR-V; the latter has grown in size and is available elsewhere with an optional third row. Already on the market in Thailand, the sixth-generation household name should be on its way here.

Cars usually look better outdoors, and so it is with Chery’s three-row, seven-seater SUV. Handsome, isn’t it?

As reported, Chery is making its public debut at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023 event this week. Held at MAEPS Serdang, the show is open to the public from May 4-7. We’re here at the press day today and the returning brand has two cars on display – the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro. The SUV duo is kickstarting the brand’s return to Malaysia, and will be launching in June/July.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro 7-seater SUV launching in Malaysia in June – updated Max version heading our way, CKD

Here are some updates from Chery from Auto Shanghai 2023, where we are at. We know that the Omoda 5 SUV will be launching in June, but the funky B-SUV won’t be alone in the Chery brand relaunch – the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro will be alongside it as well, making it a duo for the introduction. Both will be locally assembled at Inokom’s plant in Kulim, which will be the first factory in the world to CKD this model in right-hand drive form.

UPDATE: The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has been launched in Malaysia, priced at RM160k.

The Tiggo 8 Pro was part of Chery Malaysia’s local preview back in October 2022, but the actual CKD car is an improved version, and we caught up with the latest Tiggo 8 Pro Max in Wuhu, Chery’s hometown. The three-row SUV has an updated look that features a new “galaxy” grille with a bolder insert and an illuminated Chery emblem. The rear end sports a full-width LED bar and fancy T-shaped third brake lights. The wheels are now 19-inch items, an inch up.

It’s nicer outside now, but it’s inside that the Tiggo 8 Pro Max shines. The steering wheel is also new, with Chery spelled out instead of the logo. Speaking of logos, there are Tiggo emblems on the side of the central screen and the rear AC vent area. Kit wise, the max count for the airbags and Sony speakers are up.

There are 1.6T and 2.0T versions of the Tiggo 8 Pro Max in China, but we’ll be getting only the bigger engine. Also different is the name – Chery’s flagship model in Malaysia will be called the Tiggo 8 Pro, without the Max suffix seen on this CDM unit. Basically, we’ll be getting a Max without the slightly unwieldy name. Expect the price of this seven-seater SUV to be between the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-8. The latter is also a three-row model, a direct rival.

Chery Malaysia officials told us that PHEV variants of the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro are confirmed for Malaysia, and we can expect the launch to be early next year. What do you think of the latest Tiggo 8 Pro compared to the Proton X90 and Mazda CX-8?

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro launching in Malaysia by Q2 2023 – flagship 7-seat SUV to be CKD, 2.0L turbo and 7DCT

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro previewed in Malaysia recently will be launched here by Q2 of 2023. The company’s flagship SUV that’s set to give other seven-seater SUVs like the Mazda CX-8 and Hyundai Santa Fe a run for their money will be introduced as a locally assembled (CKD) model from the get-go.

UPDATE: The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has been launched in Malaysia, priced at RM160k.

The model confirmed for Malaysia will be powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder TGDi turbocharged petrol engine with 254 hp and 390 Nm of torque, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 2.0 litre TGDi mill is the more powerful engine option with the other being a 1.6 litre TGDi turbocharged engine, like in the Omoda 5, with 194 hp and 290 Nm of torque.

There is also a PHEV model that’s likely to be introduced in Malaysia in 2024. It’s powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors and a hybrid transmission to produce 241 hp and 510 Nm of torque.

Based on the model previewed here, the Tiggo 8 Pro with come with three digital displays – a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a digital air-conditioning system display in a cabin that’s visibly more plush and distinguishable from the Tiggo 7 Pro.

Standard kit seen on the previewed model includes full LED headlights with Matrix technology, LED daytime running lights and 18-inch wheels while on the inside, the Tiggo 8 Pro gets an eight-speaker Sony sound system, wireless charging, dual-zone air conditioning and a panoramic roof.

Based on what you’ve seen in the pictures, do you think the Tiggo 8 Pro is well equipped to bring the fight to more established models by the likes of Mazda and Hyundai? Let us know in the comments!

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV previewed in Malaysia – 7-seat flagship model, 2.0T with 254 hp/390 Nm, PHEV option

Of the five SUVs that were present at the Chery Malaysia preview event yesterday, the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is the largest and most luxurious. The flagship of the Tiggo Pro range is also available in “e+” plug-in hybrid form, and both the regular ICE and PHEV variants were showcased.

If the Omoda 5 is a HR-V rival and the Tiggo 7 Pro is a CR-V-sized SUV, think of the Tiggo 8 Pro as a Hyundai Santa Fe or Mazda CX-8 type of SUV, one with three rows of seats for seven occupants. Size aside, the 8 also serves as the flagship model for the Tiggo Pro range, and since Chery is all in on SUVs these days, this is also a flagship for the brand itself.

Powering the Tiggo 8 Pro is a 2.0 litre turbo-four with 254 hp and 390 Nm of torque, and the TGDi is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is the more powerful of the two engine options – the other is the 194 hp/290 Nm 1.6 litre TGDi that can also be had in the Omoda 5. AWD is also available. 254 hp/390 Nm is a pretty strong set of figures a 2.0L – Mazda’s 2.5 litre turbo is rated at 228 hp/420 Nm, for instance.

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro SUV previewed in Malaysia – 7-seat flagship model, 2.0T with 254 hp/390 Nm, PHEV option

Meanwhile, the PHEV combines a 1.5 litre turbo engine with a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and dual motors for 241 hp and 510 Nm of torque. Chery claims 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.2 seconds and a pure EV range of 80 km.

What’s more eye-popping is the car’s nine operating modes – single motor pure electric, dual motor pure electric, series and extended range mode, direct engine drive mode and parallel drive mode. The other four is related to energy recovery – parking and charge mode, driving and charge mode, single motor brake energy regeneration and dual motor brake energy regeneration. We’re pretty sure that this PHEV doesn’t work that differently from others, but Chery decided to spell it all out.

The Tiggo 8 Pro’s dashboard is similar to that of the Tiggo 7 Pro you saw earlier, but with plusher materials and more coverage for the nicer (read softer) stuff. The seats are where this is the most obvious – the leather is smoother and significantly softer. Another easy way to differentiate 8 from 7 is the AC control screen – it’s in colour here, making it three colour screens on the dashboard.

There are small changes to the PHEV’s dashboard, which has a continuous strip of AC vents and joint instrument panel and infotainment screen (in total, 24.6 inches wide). The centre console gains hybrid related touch panel controls and a 4WD model selector, and some elements have been moved here to balance out the symmetry. The PHEV display car is a left-hand drive model.

Kit wise, the flagship SUV gets all that’s on the Tiggo 7 Pro, and more. Included are full LED headlights with matrix tech, LED DRLs, 18-inch wheels, powered panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-speaker Sony sound system, wireless charging tray, dual-zone climate control, and two-tone leather upholstery. The driver’s seat gains lumbar and memory functions.

What do you think of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, the flagship model with the whole inventory of kit thrown in. Does it stand a chance in our market and how much would you pay for it? For something a bit more mass market, check out the C-segment Tiggo 7 Pro and the rather wild-looking Omoda 5.
