Volkswagen ID. Buzz launched in Indonesia – 286 PS, up to 430 km WLTP EV range; SWB version fr RM367k

The first Volkswagen electric vehicle (EV) to go on sale in Indonesia is the ID. Buzz, which is the German carmaker’s retrofuturistic take on the iconic Microbus. Launched during the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), the ID. Buzz is offered there in short-wheelbase (SWB) form and is priced at 1.3 billion rupiah (about RM367k).

For the money, the MEB-based ID. Buzz gets a lithium-ion battery with a net energy capacity of 79 kWh (84 kWh gross) that is good for a range of up to 430 km following the WLTP standard. The battery powers a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 286 PS (282 hp or 210 kW) and 560 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds and top speed of 160 km/h.

Charging at a max AC input of 11 kW will see the battery be completely filled in about 7.5 hours, while with DC fast charging at a peak of 170 kW, a 5-80% state of charge can be achieved in around 30 minutes.

  • Seres 7 in Indonesia – rebadged Huawei Aito 7, 6-seat range-extender EV SUV, up to 449 PS, 1,150 km range

Seres 7 in Indonesia – rebadged Huawei Aito 7, 6-seat range-extender EV SUV, up to 449 PS, 1,150 km range

Aside from the Seres 9, Dongfeng Sokon Automobile (DFSK) also previewed the Seres 7 at the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Just like its sibling, it ditches the Aito branding – a collaboration with telecommunications equipment and smartphone maker Huawei – used in the Chinese market.

The Seres 7 may be smaller than the massive 9, but despite looking like a C-segment SUV, it’s still not exactly what you’d call small. At 5,020 mm long, 1,945 mm wide and 1,775 mm tall, it sits between the BMW X5 and X7 in size, although its 2,820 mm wheelbase is smaller than both. It’s no wonder, then, that the car can be had with up to six seats, the second row sitting in power-adjustable “zero gravity” captain’s chairs with retractable ottomans.

Like the Seres 9, the 7 is a range-extender electric vehicle, with the standard rear-wheel-drive model being powered by a single motor producing 272 PS (200 kW) and 360 Nm of torque. The all-wheel-drive version adds a front motor churning out 177 PS (130 kW), resulting in a total system output of 449 PS (330 kW) and 660 Nm. Zero to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds and 4.8 seconds respectively.

Seres 7 in Indonesia – rebadged Huawei Aito 7, 6-seat range-extender EV SUV, up to 449 PS, 1,150 km range

All Seres 7s are fitted with a 48 kWh battery that provides a WLTP range of 200 km on the RWD model and 175 km with AWD. If that’s not enough, you can engage the 152 PS 1.5 litre turbo four-cylinder engine to provide more juice to the motors and boost total range to between 1,050 km (AWD) and 1,150 km (RWD). Unlike the Seres 9, there’s no pure electric version of the Seres 7 available.

Seres/Aito has not provided a DC fast charging power figure for the 7, only that the car will charge the battery from 30 to 80% in half an hour; AC charging from 20 to 90%, on the other hand, will take five hours.

The Seres 7’s design is defined by the wraparound grille and headlight design, a large lower grille, clean side surfacing (aided by the flush pop-out door handles) and full-width taillights integrated into the tailgate (much like the Audi Q7). The car you see here rides on rather handsome 20-inch two-tone turbine-style alloy wheels, although a 21-inch option is also available.

Seres 7 in Indonesia – rebadged Huawei Aito 7, 6-seat range-extender EV SUV, up to 449 PS, 1,150 km range

Inside, the Seres 7 is just as minimalist as the exterior, featuring a horizontal dashboard, a full-width air vent design, a classy brown, tan and wood colour scheme and a wide centre console with Tesla-style twin Qi wireless chargers.

Dominating proceedings are a large 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Here, Huawei’s expertise comes to the fore – the Seres 7’s tech runs on that company’s HarmonyOS operating system, delivering a smartphone-like user experience. Here, however, Huawei’s branding has been completely wiped out, presumably due to ongoing sanctions against the company outside China.

Safety-wise, the Seres 7 comes with eight airbags and numerous driver assists that include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, lane change assist, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and automatic high beam.

A recent facelift in China has given the Aito 7 a slimmer lower grille and an upgraded sensor package that includes a roof-mounted lidar sensor. This adds the Navigation Control Assistant (NCA), providing highly-automated driving on city and highway roads, along with a driverless valet parking feature.

  • GAC Aion Hyptec HT in Indonesia – Hyper HT EV with new name, up to 340 PS, 825 km range, RM194k

GAC Aion Hyptec HT in Indonesia – Hyper HT EV with new name, up to 340 PS, 825 km range, RM194k

Remember the GAC Aion Hyper HT that was shown at the Malaysia Autoshow in May? Well, the electric SUV has since made its way to Indonesia at the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) with a new name – the Hyptec HT.

With that name (presumably due to trademark issues) comes a lower price – starting at 685,000,000 rupiah (RM193,400) for pre-orders, the Hyptec HT is considerably less expensive than the Hyper GT is in Thailand, putting it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y. Two variants, Premium and Ultra, will be made available in the archipelago, with a launch set for September.

Despite its more premium positioning relative to other Aion models, the Hyptec HT is only available in rear-wheel-drive form – its single motor produces either 245 PS (180 kW) and 355 Nm of torque or 340 PS (250 kW) and 430 Nm. The zero-to-100 km/h sprint is completed in 6.8 seconds and 5.8 seconds respectively.

GAC Aion Hyptec HT in Indonesia – Hyper HT EV with new name, up to 340 PS, 825 km range, RM194k

In its home market of China, the Hyptec GT is offered with four battery size options – the less powerful motor can be had with either a 70 or a 72.7 kWh battery providing a CLTC-rated range of 550 km and 600 km respectively. Meanwhile, the high-powered version can be specced with either an 80 or 99.5 kWh pack that can travel up to 670 km and 825 km respectively.

Interestingly, only the more powerful versions have an 800-volt electrical architecture for faster DC charging, with Aion claiming that the Hyper HT can gain up to 425 km of range with just 15 minutes of charging. The 400-volt versions, on the other hand, receive up to 140 km of range with ten minutes of DC charging.

Built on Aion’s Advanced Electrification Platform (AEP), the Hyptec GT bears a striking resemblance to a certain Texan carmaker, particularly through its streamlined “coupé” SUV design. The inspiration is especially evident in the Tesla Model X-style “falcon” rear doors, replete with hinges near the roof that fold slightly as the doors go upwards, enabling them to open in tighter parking spaces. The car you see here, however, comes with regular forward-opening rear doors.

GAC Aion Hyptec HT in Indonesia – Hyper HT EV with new name, up to 340 PS, 825 km range, RM194k

Inside, the Hyptec HT features a minimalist cabin typical of many Tesla-aping Chinese EVs, dominated by a massive 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. The driver environment, however, takes a leaf out of the Peugeot book, with a small steering wheel sitting below an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. Both run on Qualcomm’s ubiquitous Snapdragon 8155 flagship automotive chip.

Following its appearance in Indonesia, the Hyptec GT is set to be sold in Malaysia in the coming months, with GAC Aion dealers letting slip during the Malaysia Autoshow that an October launch was planned. As yet, it is unclear whether the car will be named the Hyptec or Hyper HT, but we can assume we will follow Thailand’s lead and choose the latter.

  • 2024 MG3 Hybrid at GIIAS 2024 – 1.5L Atkinson-cycle petrol, 4.4l/100 km consumption; RM58k in Indonesia

    2024 MG3 Hybrid at GIIAS 2024 – 1.5L Atkinson-cycle petrol, 4.4l/100 km consumption; RM58k in Indonesia

Following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the MG 3 Hybrid has been shown at the 2024 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) this month.

This model measures 4,113 mm long, 1,797 mm wide and 1,502 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm, or 95 mm longer, 69 mm wider and 5 mm lower than its predecessor, while having grown 50 mm in its wheelbase.

The third-generation MG3 gets a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, comprised of a 1.5 litre Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 102 PS and 128 Nm of torque on its own. The combustion engine is aided by an electric motor, rated to produce 136 PS and 250 Nm of torque, bringing a combined output of 194 PS.

Providing energy for the electric motor is a 1.83 kWh battery with an onboard motor generator, while a three-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the front wheels. All in, the MG3 Hybrid does the 0-100 km/h benchmark in eight seconds, and a top speed of 170 km/h. Fuel consumption is a claimed 4.4 l/100 km, and 100 g/km of CO2 emissions on the combined cycle.

Inside, the cabin of the MG3 Hybrid mirrors that of its European counterpart (named the MG3 Hybrid+), which brings a 10.25-inch central infotainment touchscreen, while a seven-inch unit above the steering column serves as instrumentation for the driver. The dashboard is a slight variation of that found in the larger MG4 EV that is on sale in Malaysia, which is further along the minimalist design path.

Active safety kit for the MG3 Hybrid, based on its debut kit list, includes Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and Traffic Jam Assist.

Further conveniences comprised of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, air-conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, four USB ports, rear parking sensors and camera, leather upholstery, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel as well as a 360-degree camera.

According to Indonesian website Oto, the MG3 Hybrid is in Indonesia as a single variant and will go on sale in November this year, priced at 203.34 million rupiah (RM57,523).

  • Honda e:N1 previewed in Indonesia – HR-V EV with 204 PS, 310 Nm, 412 km WLTP range goes on sale 2025

Honda e:N1 previewed in Indonesia – HR-V EV with 204 PS, 310 Nm, 412 km WLTP range goes on sale 2025

Having made its ASEAN debut at the Bangkok Motor Show in March, the Honda e:N1 was next shown in Indonesia at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Unlike the StepWGN that was displayed at the same event, Honda actually has plans to sell the electric HR-V in the archipelago, starting next year.

Also known at the e:NS1 in China and the e:Ny1 in Europe, the e:N1 is powered by a single front motor that produces 204 PS (150 kW) and 310 Nm of torque. This gets the car from zero to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 160 km/h.

Meanwhile, a 68.8 kWh battery provides a range of 412 km on the WLTP cycle (500 km NEDC, as advertised in ASEAN). Unfortunately, the e:N1 only supports up to 78 kW of DC fast charging, taking 45 minutes to bring the battery from 10 to 80% charge; the same charging process with an 11 kW AC charger takes six hours.

Honda e:N1 previewed in Indonesia – HR-V EV with 204 PS, 310 Nm, 412 km WLTP range goes on sale 2025

On the outside, the e:N1 is differentiated by a new, closed-off grille that integrates the charge port, along with L-shaped front bumper corners. You also get EV-specific flat white Honda badges as well as the Honda script at the rear.

Inside, the e:N1 is dominated by a massive 15.1-inch portrait touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Also fitted is a push-button gear selector, replacing the HR-V’s conventional lever.

Honda e:N1 previewed in Indonesia – HR-V EV with 204 PS, 310 Nm, 412 km WLTP range goes on sale 2025

Indonesians will be hoping the e:N1 will be sold outright to the public through the usual means. This is in stark contrast to Thailand where, despite investing heavily in building the car there, Honda is only making the e:N1 available for rentals through 12 of the country’s leading rental firms.

As for us, Honda Malaysia said last year it was focusing on hybrid vehicles first as a “more practical solution” while waiting for the local charging infrastructure to be further developed, with a switch to full EVs only coming later.

  • Huawei Aito M9 on show at GIIAS 2024 – BEV/REEV to go on sale under Seres badging in Indonesia next year

Huawei Aito M9 on show at GIIAS 2024 – BEV/REEV to go on sale under Seres badging in Indonesia next year

As expected, there’s no shortage of Chinese brands at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) this year, and one of them is Seres, which has the Aito M9 as one of its exhibit vehicles.

The large luxury SUV isn’t on sale yet in the republic, but has been brought in as a “concept” to gauge consumer acceptance in the country. However, Sokonindo Automobile, a joint venture between Sokon Group and Kaisar Motorindo Industri, indicated a couple of months ago it was planning to introduce the M9 along with its M7 sibling in the country next year.

When it arrives, it will not be marketed as the Aito (which is a joint-venture brand between Huawei and Seres), but will instead be known as the Seres M9. Sounds a little confusing? Not really, as the short of it is that the Huawei Aito M9 and this is the same car.

In its domestic market, the M9 is available as a full-fledged EV or as a range-extender EV (REEV)., in two variant forms for each. The display example at GIIAS is the range-extender version, but the product literature at the show also highlights the BEV, so both variants are likely to be sold in Indonesia.

The REEV (or EREV, extended range electric vehicle, as the company calls it) features a 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that acts as a generator for the ternary lithium battery that comes in 42 or 52 kWh energy capacities. The battery powers two electric motors, a 224 PS (221 hp or 165 kW) and 315 Nm unit at the front, and a 272 PS (268 hp or 200 kW) and 360 Nm rear unit.

Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h, and as for operational capability, the claim is that the REEV offers up to 1,210 km (42 kWh battery) or 1,239 km (52 kWh battery) of WLTC-rated range on a full tank. Without relying on the range extender, the fully electric driving range is 190 km (42 kWh battery) or 233 km (52 kWh battery), WLTC-rated.

As for charging, it takes about five hours (7 kW) or three hours (11 kW) to get the battery on the range extender from a 20-90% SoC via the AC route, while DC fast charging takes about 30 mins to gte the unit from a 20-80% SoC, although no charging capacity figures were indicated.

As for the BEV, it also features a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup, although the output from the electric motors is different. The one at the front is rated at 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 277 Nm, while the rear motor provides 313 PS (308 hp or 230 kW) and 396 Nm. The top speed is identical to the range extender, although the century sprint time is lower at 4.3 seconds.

A 100 kWh ternary lithium battery provides a CLTC-rated range of up to 630 km on a single charge. It takes 11.7 hours (7 kW) and 7.5 hours (11 kW) to get the unit from a 20 to 90% SoC via AC, and DC fast charging from 30-80% takes just 15 minutes.

No shortage of tech and novelties amidst all that presented luxe, and these include a panoramic glass roof and soft-close doors to a multitude of screens at the front, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen and a 16-inch front passenger touchscreen to be found. Elsewhere, there’s a retractable 32-inch screen and an actual laser projector for rear occupants.

  • 2024 Nissan Serena e-Power in Indonesia – new C28 hybrid with 163 PS, 315 Nm, RM183k; Malaysia next?

2024 Nissan Serena e-Power in Indonesia – new C28 hybrid with 163 PS, 315 Nm, RM183k; Malaysia next?

While we await the much-anticipated launch of the latest C28 Nissan Serena in Malaysia, over in Indonesia, the sixth-generation MPV has gone on sale at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The seven-seater is being offered in the archipelago solely in e-Power form, featuring a hybrid powertrain that closely mirrors Honda’s e:HEV system.

It’s not exactly cheap, however – priced at 635,000,000 rupiah (RM183,300), the new car is 74,200,000 rupiah (RM21,400) more expensive than the petrol-powered outgoing model. A two-tone colour scheme adds an extra 4,500,000 rupiah (RM1,300).

Power comes from a single electric front motor that produces 163 PS and 315 Nm of torque, which in turn is juiced by a 98 PS/123 Nm 1.4 litre HR14DDe naturally-aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine that also charges the 1.77 kWh battery. Unlike Honda’s system, the three-pot has zero mechanical connection to the wheels and can’t drive the car on its own.

2024 Nissan Serena e-Power in Indonesia – new C28 hybrid with 163 PS, 315 Nm, RM183k; Malaysia next?

Measuring 4,765 mm long, 1,715 mm wide and 1,885 mm tall, the C28 Serena is 25 mm shorter and narrower and 20 mm taller than the C27, while its 2,870 mm wheelbase is 10 mm longer. While the dimensions aren’t much different, the new car is a much more modern-looking machine, at least where the front is concerned.

Here, the Serena is dominated by a massive slatted V-motion grille that runs all the way out to the upper corners. Sitting between those slats are the neatly-integrated three-tier LED headlights, while underneath them are a pair of triangular inlets duct air around the front wheels. A decorative trim piece with the “Serena” script visually links the grille/headlight combination to the tall glasshouse.

At the back, the window line kinks upwards towards the slim vertical LED taillights, which combine with the sizeable rear spoiler to frame the upright split-opening tailgate. Indonesia gets the range-topping Highway Star model, which gets a sportier bodykit and rides on 16-inch turbine-style two-tone alloy wheels.

2024 Nissan Serena e-Power in Indonesia – new C28 hybrid with 163 PS, 315 Nm, RM183k; Malaysia next?

The modernisation continues on the inside, where a pair of 12.3-inch instrument and infotainment displays sit on a widescreen display panel above the full-width air vents. Below this you’ll find a large control panel for the dual-zone auto air con and push-button gear selector, above a slot for the Qi wireless charger.

As per the current model, the seven seats are arranged in a 2-2-3 configuration with second-row sliding and reclining captain’s chairs and a third row that folds up towards the sides of the cabin. Standard kit includes keyless entry, push-button start, hands-free power-sliding rear doors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C fast charging ports, rear side window sunshades, a 360-degree camera system, a camera-based digital rear-view mirror and six speakers.

Safety-wise, the Serena comes with a range of ProPilot driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, a driver attention monitor and automatic high beam. Six airbags and stability control are fitted as standard.

The Nissan Serena is widely expected to be the next new model to be sold in Malaysia. The car was sighted here as early as March last year, hinting at an impending launch, but things have been quiet on that front since then. We’re not sure what’s the reason for the delay, but we can imagine the significant price increase – as seen in Indonesia – may have had something to do with it. Would you buy the new Serena e-Power at this price? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

  • 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N launched in Indonesia – CKD; from RM375k; up to 650 PS, 770 Nm; simulated 8DCT

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N launched in Indonesia – CKD; from RM375k; up to 650 PS, 770 Nm; simulated 8DCT

PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) has officially launched the Ioniq 5 N at the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). Like the regular Ioniq 5, the high-performance N version is locally assembled (CKD) in Indonesia at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) plant near Cikarang.

The launch of the Ioniq 5 N also marks the debut of Hyundai’s performance brand (simply called N) in Indonesia, and customers can now pre-book the electric vehicle (EV) which is estimated to retail for around 1.3 billion rupiah (about RM375k).

Seven colours (Performance Blue Matte, Midnight Black Pearl, Magnetic Silver Metallic, Titan Gray Metallic, Optic White, Optic White Matte, Gravity Gold Matte) are offered for the model. As part of a special promotion, buyers will also get a complimentary wallbox, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and one-year charging subscription with their purchase.

If you’re wondering how much the N model is compared to the regular Ioniq 5, the latter’s line-up starts from 782 million rupiah (RM226k) for the base Prime Standard Range and goes all the way up to 990 million rupiah (RM286k) for the special Batik edition.

The premium, naturally, goes towards performance, as the Ioniq 5 N’s dual-motor powertrain is rated at 609 PS (600 hp or 448 kW) and 740 Nm of torque. With N Grin Boost (NGB) engaged, those figures rise to 650 PS (641 hp or 478 kW) and 770 Nm for 10 seconds. As such, the 0-100 km/h sprint takes just 3.4 seconds (3.5 seconds without NGB in play) and the top speed is 260 km/h.

Powering the electric motors is an 84-kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 448 km of range following the WLTP standard. With DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, a 10-80% state of charge can be achieved in just 18 minutes.

Other enhancements over a standard Ioniq 5 N include a wider body, revised front and rear aprons to promote better cooling and aerodynamics, a sporty interior, a more rigid body-in-white (BIW) structure, a rear electronic limited slip differential (e-LSD) as well as beefier brakes. There is also a whole suite of N-branded functions, including:

    • N Pedal – provides instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity
    • N Drift Optimiser – maintain a drift angle more easily
    • N Torque Distribution – provides fully variable front and rear torque distribution with 11 levels of adjustment
    • N Grin Boost – temporary power boost
    • N Launch Control – provides three different traction levels for the best possible start
    • N Battery Pre-conditioning – sets the battery up for specific driving requirements: Drag for a short burst of full power and Track for the lowest possible battery temperature for more laps.
    • N Race – optimises the EV’s endurance by giving drivers more direct control over the car’s energy usage: Endurance, which maximises range on track, or Sprint that prioritises power and provides shorter bursts of full energy
    • N Brake Regen – a specific regenerative braking system that offers up to 0.6 G of decelerative force
    • N e-shift – simulates the gearshifts made by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission by controlling the torque output, providing a jolt feeling between shifts
    • N Active Sound+ – uses 10 speakers (eight internal, two external) to generate three distinct sound themes

  • Wuling Binguo EV special edition celebrates brand’s 7th anniversary in Indonesia – limited to 1,000 units

Wuling Binguo EV special edition celebrates brand’s 7th anniversary in Indonesia – limited to 1,000 units

Wuling is celebrating seven years since its debut in Indonesia with a special edition of the Binguo EV that is limited to 1,000 units. Details are limited but according to local media reports, the celebratory model is based on the existing Premium Range variant, albeit with some aesthetic enhancements like multi-colour wheel caps, tailgate decals and graphics inspired by local batik designs.

The carmaker also revealed that local production has passed 146,000 units and there’s now a network of 150 dealers in Indonesia. In terms of EVs, Wuling says it currently commands a 52% market in the first half of this year with cumulative sales of over 20,000 units. Meanwhile, exports out of Indonesia amounted to around 5,500 units to 14 countries.

Since its launch last December, the Binguo EV has had its pricing adjusted and as of January 1, 2024, the starting price is 317 million rupiah (about RM92k) for the base Long Range. This variant is equipped with a 31.9-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that provides up to 333 km of range (likely a NEDC figure). There’s also a version of the Long Range with more kit for 326 million rupiah (RM94k) and the same powertrain.

The range-topper is the Premium Range at 372 million rupiah (RM107k) that gets a 37.9-kWh LFP battery for up to 410 km of range. All variants get the same front-mounted electric motor rated at 68 PS (67 hp or 50 kW) and 150 Nm.

For charging, the Bingo EV supports AC charging at a max of 3.3 kW, with a full charge requiring 9.5 hours. There’s also DC fast charging (the carmaker didn’t indicate the acceptable power input) that sees a 30-80% state of charge achieved in just 35 minutes.

In terms of available equipment, the Bingo EV is offered with 15-inch wheels, LED headlamps and taillights, perforated synthetic leather seat upholstery, two 10.25-inch screens (digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen), a six-way powered driver’s seat, two airbags, ABS, EBD, an electronic parking brake (with auto hold), ESC, a reverse camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, keyless entry and start, cruise control and automatic air-conditioning.

  • Honda StepWGN 2.0 e:HEV at GIIAS 2024 – Serena, Noah/Voxy competitor makes its first ASEAN showing

Honda StepWGN 2.0 e:HEV at GIIAS 2024 – Serena, Noah/Voxy competitor makes its first ASEAN showing

The appearance of the sixth-gen Honda StepWGN at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024 suggested the possibility of the MPV’s introduction into that market, but as it turns out, the vehicle has been brought in by Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) to, as it put it, continue studying consumer needs in various segments in Indonesia.

Despite it just being a showcase display to gauge public interest, its entry into the market hasn’t been discounted, as indicated by HPM president director Shugo Watanabe when we spoke to him. If it does eventually make it to the republic, the long-awaited replacement for the Odyssey will go up against the likes of the Nissan Serena and Toyota Noah/Voxy.

The StepWGN example on show at GIIAS is a Spada e:HEV example, which is powered by an Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) system similar to that seen on the Civic and CR-V e:HEV, combining the workings of an electric motor and petrol engine.

The latter is a 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine offering 145 PS (143 hp at 6,200 rpm and 175 Nm at 3,500 rpm, acting primarily as a generator. A 184 PS and 315 Nm electric motor handles most of the propulsion work, but the petrol engine can provide direct drive – via a lock-up clutch – at higher speeds for better efficiency.

In the metal, the latest StepWGN is pretty clean,if conventional, looking machine. It has become a bit more generic though, as a result of its signature Waku Waku Gate tailgate having been replaced by a single-piece tailgate.

Inside, there’s plenty of practicality in the seven-seater, especially in terms of seating configuration – the second row can be moved sideways and slid all the way forwards and backwards, and the third-row seats can still be stowed into the floor to provide a flat boot, with the low floor improving aspects of cargo loading.

  • 2024 BYD M6 in Indonesia – e6 facelift, up to 204 PS, 310 Nm, 530 km range, from RM110k to RM124k

    2024 BYD M6 in Indonesia – e6 facelift, up to 204 PS, 310 Nm, 530 km range, from RM110k to RM124k

It looks like BYD is about to have another winner on its hands in the shape of the M6, which makes its Indonesian debut at the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). If this electric MPV looks familiar, that’s because it is essentially a rebadged version of the budget-oriented e6, now with new looks, greater sophistication and more power.

Despite this repositioning, the M6 hasn’t lost its value-driven roots. Prices start from just 379,000,000 rupiah (RM109,500) for the standard seven-seater model, rising up to 419,000,000 rupiah (RM121,000) for the Superior variant. A version of the latter with six seats (including second-row captain’s chairs) will run buyers 429,000,000 rupiah (RM123,900).

This is in spite of the car being much more powerful than the e6. Even the base model’s single front motor has been boosted from a measly 95 PS (70 kW) to a far more usable 163 PS (120 kW), while torque has swelled from 180 Nm to 310 Nm. As for the Superior, that one gets the same motor as the Atto 3, producing 204 PS (150 kW). So equipped, the M6 will get from zero to 100 km/h in 10.1 and 8.6 seconds respectively.

    2024 BYD M6 in Indonesia – e6 facelift, up to 204 PS, 310 Nm, 530 km range, from RM110k to RM124k

Of course, all models get BYD’s Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The standard model’s 55.4 kWh capacity provides an NEDC-rated range of 420 km, while the Superior’s larger 71.8 kWh unit is claimed to be able to travel up to 530 km on a single charge. Speaking of which, the M6 can accept up to 89 kW of DC fast charging, or up to 115 kW for the Superior, the latter taking 40 minutes to charge the battery from 10 to 80%. Meanwhile, AC charging is limited to 7 kW across the board.

Design-wise, the M6 has been thoroughly modernised. The e6’s slightly gawky front end has been replaced by BYD’s latest corporate face, with a full-width silver bar (housing the BYD script) linking the revised multi-projector LED headlights. These sit above a wing-shaped bumper insert that ties neatly into the slim air intakes and chrome “tusks”.

The styling revamp continues at the rear, where you’ll find handsome full-width taillights that integrate a slimmer, more subtle chrome strip; you also get just a simple BYD badge instead of the tacky “Build Your Dreams” of old. The more upmarket look has been enhanced by another chrome strip around the lower perimeter, while 17-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels come as standard.

    2024 BYD M6 in Indonesia – e6 facelift, up to 204 PS, 310 Nm, 530 km range, from RM110k to RM124k

Inside, the changes are smaller but no less significant. The horizontal dashboard, analogue gauges (with a five-inch multi-info display) and “Build Your Dreams” text (now in a more modern font) remain, but you now get wood-effect dash trim and a redesigned centre console with a stubby gear selector instead of a rotary knob. More importantly, the rotating centre screen is now powered and goes up in size from 10.1 to 12.8 inches – the same size as the Dolphin‘s. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, of course.

Other bits of standard kit include keyless entry, push-button start, an NFC key card, automatic air con, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, cruise control, faux leather upholstery, a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, a 360-degree camera system and six speakers. The Superior adds roof rails, a panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable ventilated front seats, Qi wireless charging and a powered tailgate.

Safety-wise, the M6 comes with six airbags, stability control and a door opening warning. However, only the Superior gets any form of advanced driver assists such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring and automatic high beam.

Could the M6 make its way to Malaysia? The MPV segment has rebounded of late – sales have surged by 11% in the first half of the year. The e6 was previously earmarked for our market, and now that the local lineup has been fully fleshed out, this could make a great electric alternative to a conventional seven-seater SUV. Would you buy one? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

  • Wuling Cloud EV on display at GIIAS 2024 – MG4 EV, BYD Dolphin rival; 136 PS, 460 km range; from RM115k

Wuling Cloud EV on display at GIIAS 2024 – MG4 EV, BYD Dolphin rival; 136 PS, 460 km range; from RM115k

The Wuling Cloud EV is currently on display at this year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) following its market launch in May. Available in one variant priced at 398.8 million rupiah (about RM115k), the Cloud EV competes against models like the BYD Dolphin as well as the MG4 EV.

Measuring 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, 1,652 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,700 mm, the Cloud EV is similar in size to rivals, although it does have a more unique design with a stepped section near the full-width daytime running lights that is reminiscent of the smaller Air EV.

There’s no traditional grille on the Cloud EV, with only a small intake in the lower apron just above the primary LED headlamps. Other notable cues include flush, pop-out door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels, while the rear features ‘Horizon Skyline’ taillights.

Inside, there’s a simple dashboard layout with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that integrates the air-conditioning controls. The seats are trimmed in synthetic leather and have a tufted look to them, accompanied by soft-touch materials in other areas and rose gold panels.

Other items on the kit list include second-row air vents, a PM2.5 filter, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, a 20W USB port, a wireless charging pad, a six-speaker sound system, a smart power tailgate, telematics, powered front seats, ambient lighting (up to 256 colour options), a tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, EBD, brake assist, ESC, hill start assist and four airbags.

The ADAS suite consists of adaptive cruise control with cornering assist, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and intelligent high beam.

As for the powertrain, the Cloud EV is equipped with a 50.6-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that provides as much as 460 km of range following the highly generous CLTC standard. With AC charging, a 20-100% state of charge can be reached in around seven hours, while DC fast charging gets the battery from 30-100% in about 30 minutes.

The battery powers a front-mounted electric motor rated at 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. These figures are competitive against the Cloud EV’s rivals, but the Dolphin in the higher Premium Extended Range variant sold there is more powerful and provides more range. However, the Cloud EV undercuts the competition in terms of price at being under 400 million rupiah (RM116k), which both the BYD and MG EVs exceed.
