DAB 1 Alpha limited edition electric scooter – 36 hp, 130 km/h top speed, 400 units worldwide, RM75,731

Entering the electric motorcycle (e-bike) market is the 2024 DAB 1 Alpha, to be produced in a limited production run of 400 units and priced at 14,900 Euro (RM75,731). As DAB’s debut model, the 1 Alpha, comes after the French company’s acquisition by Peugeot Motorcycles.

With its initial concept electric scooter finding favour with musical artists and fashion design brand Burberry, the 1 Alpha features an avant-garde design. Strongly resembling the Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen, the 1 Alpha is crafted in Beaulieu-Mandeure and designed in Bayonne, France.

Notable in DAB’s design philosophy is the 1 Alpha’s battery, which can be fully repaired, disassembled, and recycled, thus eliminating any issues with battery lifespan and utility. The battery itself is a lithium-ion unit rated at 72 Volts with a 7.1 kWh maximum capacity, giving a maximum range of 150 km and a governed top speed of 130 km/h.

Motive power is provided by a brushless DC motor with a claimed 11 kW nominal and 25.5 kW peak power, the equivalent of 34.6 hp with regenerative braking. Meanwhile, torque is claimed to be 395 Nm at the rear wheel, driven by a DAB transmission and Gates carbon drive belt.

Using the onboard charger and domestic current, the 1 Alpha takes three hours to go from zero to full charge while a Type 2 charger adaptor is available as an optional extra. On the handlebar, there is a blue “Nitrous” button that when pressed gives a short boost of power, installed as homage to the “Need for Speed: Underground 2” video game.

Premium components are used on the 1 Alpha, including a Brembo radial four-piston brake calliper on the front wheel and a single-piston Brembo calliper at the rear while Peugeot supplies the two-wheel ABS. There are two colour options available – W-White and MGT Grey – as well as an extra cost customisation option.

Paioli supplies the suspension for the 1 Alpha, with 46 mm diameter upside-down adjustable titanium nitrided front forks and preload-adjustable rear monoshock with external reservoir. Faba supplies the spoked wheels in 17-inch sizing, shod with a 120/70 tyre in front and a 150/60 at the back.

Portions on the bodywork are made from repurposed carbon-fibre from Airbus Industrie, including the front fender and frame protectors. The trend of high quality components continues to the Alcantra leather clad seat, as well as the Alcantra-lined glove compartment that conceals the 1 Alpha’s charging port.

All the necessary information is displayed on a 2.8-inch LCD display that also doubles as the front number plate holder and there are four ride modes – Eco, Standard, Sport, Nitrous – and a reverse mode. Weight for the Alpha 1 is listed at 125 kg with seat height set at 880 mm as standard and 840 mm for the low seat.

2025 KTM 300 EXC HardEnduro ready to race

Following the release of KTM’s 2025 EXC Enduro off-road motorcycle range, focus now falls on the 2025 KTM 300 EXC HardEnduro. Designed specifically for off-road enduro racing, a race series that is seeing a surge of popularity in Malaysia of late, the 300 EXC HardEnduro is built for the toughest races.

Powered by KTM’s two-stroke Enduro single-cylinder engine with throttle-body injection, the 300 EXC HardEnduro is, as much as possible, engineered for tool-free maintenance and adjustment on the trail. This includes an Off-Road Control Unit (OCU) that replaces the traditional fuse box and relays with a single black box located under the seat.

The OCU takes signals from the voltage regulator and ECU constantly with over-current deactivated instantaneously. This makes for easy error detection and diagnostics as the status of each output is indicated by the red or green indicator.

Two engine maps are available with Map 1 giving linear and predictable power delivery. Meanwhile, Map 2 is more aggressive for added throttle response and explosive power delivery.

  • Yamaha goes automatic with Y-AMT bike gearbox

Yamaha goes automatic with Y-AMT bike gearbox

Jumping on the motorcycle automatic transmission bandwagon is Yamaha, with its Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT). Much like Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), Yamaha gives riders clutchless shifting with gear changing done via rocker switches located on the left handlebar pod.

Automatic gearboxes for motorcycles is not new, the technology reaching the mass market back in the late 70s and early 80s. However, response was tepid to say the least and riders did not embrace the benefits of clutchless shifting.

Moving to modern times, like Honda’s DCT the Y-AMT system comes with a finger-operated manual shift, ‘MT’ or the fully automatic ‘AT’. Shifting is controlled with the index finger and thumb – ‘+’ for upshifts and ‘-‘ for downshifts, with the plus lever pulled to shift up and pushed to shift down with the index finger for true one digit operation.

The default automatic ‘D’ shifting mode gives a softer gear shift at lower rpm, suitable for daily commuting and long distance riding. Selecting the ‘D+’ mode moves gear changing slightly higher up the rev range for sportier riding.

Yamaha goes automatic with Y-AMT bike gearbox

In fully automatic mode, riders can override the gearbox at any time with the handlebar switches. Y-AMT uses two electric actuators that perform the functions of the rider’s left hand and foot in operating the gearbox.

The system weighs in at 2.8 kg and designed to allow for a slim and lightweight installation that is no wider than a traditional motorcycle gearbox. While Yamaha did not give an indication of when Y-AMT will enter the market, expect to first see it installed on Yamaha’s touring and sport-touring motorcycles such as the Yamaha Tracer GT.

Meanwhile, ‘D’ is for city and highway riding, with full automatic operation and maximum fuel efficiency. ‘S’ mode with three levels makes the engine rev a little higher before shifting up and while shifting down sooner when decelerating for extra engine braking.

The rider can immediately switch to ‘MT’ mode while riding, over riding the gearbox if necessary. As normal riding resumes, the DCT gearbox will switch back to automatic mode, depending on throttle and gear position, and vehicle speed.

Selecting gearbox off-road mode for the Africa Twin is done with ‘G’ mode, accessible through the 6.5-inch TFT-LCD screen. Available in any of the gearbox modes, this mode improves feel for available traction and machine control by reducing the amount of clutch slip during gear changes.

The Africa Twin’s electronics suite comes with a six-axis IMU and ride-by-wire throttle. This allows for four levels of power delivery and three levels of engine braking. Honda Selectable Traction Control (HSTC) comes with seven levels of intervention as well as an ‘Off’ selection for pure off-road riding.

Coming standard is Wheelie Control, offering three levels. Level 3 prevents any sort of front wheel lift, while Level 2 gives some lift and Level 1 is for those riders who prefer saving on front tyre life by keeping the front wheel off the ground.

The Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (Showa EERATM) is now standard equipment (previously optional in Malaysia) with 200 mm off suspension travel front and rear. There are four suspension modes – Soft, Mid, Hard and Off-Road – as well as a User mode for rider preference.

2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES in Malaysia, 7% more torque, RM119,388

Ergonomics and rider comfort is also revised with 15 mm thicker urethane seat foam, with the seat shape now cut for increased comfort during long rides in the saddle. Seat height is adjustable between 820 mm and 840 mm without the use of tools.

The Africa Twin’s front fairing is redesigned for better wind protection, along with a five-position manually-adjustable windscreen. This minimises wind blast and improves rider comfort on long journeys.

Braking is done with twin 310 mm diameter brake discs on the 19-inch front wheel with four-piston callipers and a single disc with single-piston calliper on the rear 18-incher. Two-wheel ABS and rear wheel lift mitigation is standard, with ABS switched off for off-road duty only while the Africa Twin is stationary, re-activating when the ignition is turned off and on again.

2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES in Malaysia, 7% more torque, RM119,388

Equipped with a Multi Information Display (MID) 6.5-inch TFT touch screen, the Africa Twin allows the rider to select ride modes using the top left of the screen. Standard is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving seamless integration with the rider’s smartphone.

Hands-free wireless Bluetooth connectivity is available, with all control inputs managed from the left-hand switchgear while a USB charging port is located next to the MID for ease of use. Colour options for the CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES in Malaysia are Mat Ballistic Black Metallic and Pearl Glare White.
