    Special edition Ducati Panigale V4s celebrate Borgo Panigale’s 2022 MotoGP and WorldSBK titles

    Celebrating Ducati’s double championship wins in MotoGP and World Superbike Championship (WSBK) are two special edition Ducati Panigale V4Rs. Dressed in the racing livery of the Ducati Corse teams in the respective championships, each series will consist of only 260 units, in honour of 1926, the year of Ducati’s founding.

    Taking the base Panigale V4S, each bike will be dressed in either the colours of MotoGP rider Pecco Bagnaia (#63) and WSBK racer Álvaro Bautista (#19). The rider’s autograph is personally signed on the tank, which is then sealed in clear lacquer and each bike then getting an edition number.

    The number is laser etched into the upper triple clamp along with the model name. Further setting the Panigale V4 MotoGP and WSBK editions apart is the single-seat only configuration, nine-disc STM-EVO SBK dry clutch and Akrapovic street-legal silencer.

    Other special equipment includes Brembo Stylema callipers with Brembo MCS master cylinder that features remote adjustment, Rizoma billet aluminum adjustable footpegs and a plexiglass racing cowl. The rear exhaust manifold heat shield, alternator cover, front and rear fenders, and front brake ducts, are madee of carbon-fiber.

    The swingarm protector is made from a combination of carbon-fibre and titanium. The WBSK version also features the brushed aluminum tank found on the Panigale V4R.

    Each bike will be delivered in a packing case with dedicated graphics and will come with a certificate of authenticity, a custom bike cover and the Ducati Data Analyser data acquisition system. Each special edition Panigale V4 will also come with track duty accessories such as carbon-fiber open clutch cover, license plate and mirror removal kits and the billet aluminum racing fuel cap.

    No doubt, motorcycle racing is dangerous and while we never wish for any mishap to befall riders, **** happens, as they say. For the 2022 MotoGP season, there were 1,106 crashes across all the classes, MotoGP, Moto 2 and Moto 3, while in the top class, there were 335 crashes, averaging out at 16.7 falls per Grand Prix.

    At Sepang International Circuit, there were 66 mishaps during the Malaysian MotoGP, tying Malaysia with Circuit of the Americas in the US. However, the record holder this year for race crashes is Portugal at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. the Portuguese Grand Prix recording an astounding 105 crashes.

    Portugal is followed by France, the Le Mans circuit gathering 87 victims while Misano in Italy recorded 71. The most crashes recorded at a single circuit in 2022 is Sachsenring in Austria, with the notorious Turn 1, a very tight right-hander, seeing 21 riders going down this season.

    Corners that also made the top three list include Turn 7 at Le Mans with 20 riders exceeding the limits of adhesion while Turn 4 at Misano claimed 17 racers. As for the riders, Darryn Binder of WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team holds the record for the most number of crashes for a single rider in 2022, with 27.

    Taking over as Malaysian distributor for Triumph Motorcycles is Didi Resources. This appointment takes effect January 15, 2023.

    Didi Resources will be responsible for the importation, sale, and distribution of Triumph Motorcycles in Malaysia. New Triumph showrooms are planned for Petaling Jaya, Selangor and mainland Penang.

    Fast Bikes ends distributor agreement with Triumph in Malaysia, becomes Honda Big Wing Dealer on Jan 14

    As of January 14, 2023, Fast Bikes will cease to be the official Malaysian distributor for Triumph motorcycles, subsequently taking on a Honda Big Wing dealership. Accordingly, Motoradic, as exclusive official importer for Triumph, will also relinquish its role.

    Fast Bike’s Triumph outlets in Penang, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu will also end operations on that date. A new Triumph motorcycles representative for Malaysia has been appointed but the name has not been officially announced.

    For Triumph motorcycles no longer under warranty, Fast Bikes remains available for consultation and advice on service and technical matters. For motorcycles still under warranty, Triumph Motorcycles UK and its official representative in Malaysia will be solely responsible for all terms and conditions.

    After assuming the Youth and Sports Ministry portfolio following the 15th Malaysian General Election, Minister Hannah Yeoh paid a visit to Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Her visit was intended to get first hand information on the challenges facing the circuit, in light of the nearly two-year moratorium on events at Sepang due to the pandemic.

    In a social media post, Yeoh said during the visit she identified several aspects that require co-ordination with other agencies in order to improve events and services at SIC. During her walkaround of the circuit, Hannah was briefed by SIC Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif and Chief Financial Officer Caroline Lee.

    Also in attendance were SIC Chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Azman Yahya and member of the SIC Board of Directors Abdullah Hassan.

    Getting its official launch in Malaysia is the 2023 WMoto XDV250 from distributors MForce Bike Holdings, priced at RM18,888 for the standard , while the “Project X” variant goes for RM21,888. The XDV250 is available in red and blue and features adventure-touring styling, similar to the WMoto XDV150 which is priced at RM9,588, very much in vogue with Malaysian scooter riders.

    Power for the XDV250 comes from a Euro 4 compliant, single-cylinder, four-valve, liquid-cooled mill fed by EFI and displacing 249 cc. Power numbers are claimed to be 24 hp with 23 Nm torque at 6,750 rpm with power getting to the rear wheel via CVT gearbox and belt drive.

    Braking is done with single hydraulic brake discs front and rear, grabbed by J Juan brake callipers while two-channel ABS is standard equipment. Suspension comes from KYB, with upside-down forks in front and preload-adjustable twin shock absorbers.

    Riding conveniences include keyless start and adjustable handlebar, along with a digital LCD meter. Inside the instrument panel, readouts include tyre pressure monitoring, engine temperature and ambient temperature, while all the handlebar switches are backlit.

    The windshield on the XDV250 is manually adjustable to one of three positions while a 26-litre storage compartment is found under the seat. There is an additional storage compartment inside the front cowl containing a USB charging and an additional 12 volt power outlet is found on the left side of the instrument panel.

    LED lighting is used throughout out on the XDV250, with auxiliary fog lights are included as standard equipment. The XDV250 tips the scales at 159 kg with 13.2-litres of fuel carried in the tank while seat height is set at 800 mm.

    Pininfarina designs Eysing PF40 electric motorcycle

    Legendary Italian design house Pininfarina lends its magic to the Eysing PF40 electric motorcycle (e-bike). Taking cues from 1930’s motorcycle design, the PF40 is an e-bike with a “retro-futuristic” twist.

    Based on Ensign’s Pioneer e-bike model which is hand-built in Holland, the PF40 features an analogue tachometer and round, cowled headlight, reports movelectric.com. The design of the P40 itself is severely minimalist, featuring a rear-wheel hub-mounted motor.

    Terming the PF40 an “electric moped”, which in Europe means a top speed limited to 45 km/h and no requirement for a “full” motorcycle licence, the intended use if for short journeys in and around urban areas. The hub motor is rated at 1.5 kW and there are two versions available – limited to 25 km/h and 50 km/h.

    Suspension is done in front with sprung rider forks in the old school style, while the rear end is rigid. Braking uses mechanical drum brakes front and rear, and alloy wheels with ribbed pattern old style tyres fitted.

    Configured from the outset as a single-seater, the PF40 weighs 60 kg, while no details were provided about battery capacity, range or charging time. Pre-orders are being taken for the Eysing PF40 in its website with the placement of a 1,000 euro booking fee. The listed price is 13,780 euro (RM64,128).

    Just a colour update for the 2023 Honda CRF300L dual-purpose motorcycle with the Swift Gray colour scheme with orange graphics joining the familiar Extreme Red. Also new is black handguards to match the gray bodywork, while the CRF300L gets the same in a shade of red.

    In Malaysia, the CRFR250L was priced at RM24,378 in 2021 while the CRF250 Rally with improved riding comfort and handling had a retail price of RM27,599. A check with our source in Malaysian distributor Boon Siew Honda revealed plans for importing the CRF300L in the local market are “under very early discussion.”

    Power for the CRF300L comes from a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC mill displaying 286 cc. Power is claimed to be 26.95 hp at 8,500 rpm with 26.6 Nm of torque available at 6,500 rpm.

    A six-speed gearbox with slip and assist clutch gets power to the rear wheel via chain drive. For 2023, the CRF300L gets shorter first to fifth gear ratios for better engine response and acceleration while the sixth gear functions as an overdrive for relaxed highway cruising.

    The CRF300L’s 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear are shod with 80/100 and 120/80 tyres, respectively. Braking is done with a single 256mm disc gripped by a two-piston caliper while the rear gets a 220mm disc and single-piston caliper, with two-channel ABS as standard.

    Showa provides the 43 mm diameter upside-down front fork with 2260 mm of travel while the Showa rear monoshock provides the same amount. Weight for the CRF300L is listed as 142 kg, with seat height set at 880 mm and 7.8-litres of fuel is carried in the tank.

    Singapore cracks down on motorcycle emissions

    If you’re a motorcycle commuter from Malaysia to Singapore, ensure your ride is in compliance with the island state’s rules and regulations. In a recent enforcement exercise, the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) issued 66 fines to motorcyclists for various offences.

    Of the total, 25 were fined for excessive noise, four for excessive smoke emission and 24 for other misdemeanours such as improper licence plates. Additionally, 13 riders were found riding without a valid motorcycle licence and using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, as detailed by an NEA media release.

    In the release, the three enforcement agencies stated the exercise is part of efforts to remind motorists to adhere to Singapore’s environmental and road safety regulations. All vehicles, including foreign-registered vehicles entering Singapore, must comply with safety and emission requirements.

    Beginning April 2023, Singapore will tighten emissions standards for motorcycles, including foreign-owned vehicles, registered before July 2003. Such motorcycles falling under the dateline can continue to be used till Jun 2028, provided they meet the April 2023 emissions standard.

    Enforcement will be carried out through random emissions testing for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons at land entry checkpoints to Singapore, as well as during enforcement operations. Malaysian motorists are reminded vehicles that breach the rules may face penalties and be denied entry at the land checkpoints.

    Getting colour updates for the Malaysian market is the 2023 Yamaha Y15ZR, with the recommended retail price now set at RM8,998, an increase of RM500 over the 2022 Y15ZR price of RM8,498. The new colour choices are Yellow, Silver, Matte Green and Orange while pricing does not include road tax, insurance or registration.

    No other changes for the Y15ZR for next year, with power still coming from liquid-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder, 149.7 cc mill putting out a claimed 15.4 PS at 8,500 rpm and 13.8 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. A a five-speed gear box with multi-plate wet clutch and chain final drive gets power to the ground.

    Suspension is done with conventional telescopic forks on the front wheel while the rear end is held up by a preload-adjustable monoshock. Braking is done with a single hydraulic disc front and rear and the Y15ZR rolls on 17-inch wheels shod in 90/80 rubber in front and 120/70 on the rear wheel.

    Seat height for the Y15ZR is set at 780 mm while weight is 117 kg, with fuel carried in a 4.2-litre tank. The 2023 Yamaha Y15ZR comes with a two-year or 20,000 km warranty, whichever comes first, and every purchase gets a gift of a Yamaha brake disc lock worth RM100.

    Now in Malaysia is the 2022 Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory, priced at RM73,900 excluding road tax, insurance and registration. This compares against the price for the “base” model Aprilia Tuono 660 in 2021 at RM77,900.

    The Tuono 660 Factory is differentiated from the Tuono 660 with the Aprilia 659 cc parallel twin-cylinder engine with a 270-degree combustion interval getting a 5 hp increase in peak power output to 100 hp. Peak torque number remains unchanged from the standard Tuono 660 with 67 Nm at 8,500 rpm, of which 80% is available from 4,000 rpm and 90% of peak torque coming in at 6,250 rpm.

    With the extra power, gearing for the Tuono 660 Factory is shorter with a 16-tooth front sprocket (one less than on the Tuono 660) combined with a 43-tooth rear sprocket. An up-and-down quickshifter is standard equipment, fitted to a six-speed gearbox.

    Weight for the Tuono 660 Factory is reduced from the base model, with a lithium-ion battery contributing to a weight reduction of 2 kg for a kerb weight of 181 kg. Suspension is upgraded with a 41 mm Kayaba front fork and Sachs rear shock with remote reservoir, both adjustable for compression, rebound and preload.

    The Tuono 660 Factory rolls on 17-inch wheels shod in 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tyres. Braking is done with dual 320 mm discs and Brembo radial-mount calipers, while a 220 mm rear brake disc gets a Brembo caliper.

    There are five customisable ride modes in the electronics suite, three for road and two for track use, with a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU). The Aprilia APRC riding aids fit out comprises of traction control, wheelie control, adjustable engine braking, cruise control and cornering ABS.

    An added feature is what Aprilia calls “bending lights” where the LED headlamps with DRLs adjust the beam angle to suit the lean angle sustained through a turn.     Now in Malaysia’s ASEAN neighbour Thailand is the 2022 BMW Motorrad CE04 electric scooter, priced at 859,000 baht (RM108,518). For the price, the CE-04 comes with a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects, as well as free service for the same period.

    Specifications for the CE04 in Thailand are identical to the European model released in 2021, with power coming from a 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery energises a 31 kW electric motor – the equivalent of 42 hp with 62 Nm of torque.

    This makes the CE04 capable of sprinting from zero to 50 km/h in 2.6 seconds while maximum speed is governed to 120 km/h. With a full charge, BMW Motorrad claims the CE04 has a travel range of 130 km.

    Charging is done using a domestic socket, wall box or public charging station. When getting a 2.3 kW charge, the CE04 takes four hours and 20 minutes to get to full charge. Connecting to a 6.9 kW charger, the CE-04 goes from 20% to 80% battery capacity in 45 minutes.

    A Mode 2 charging cable for domestic sockets is supplied as standard while a Mode 3 fast charging cable for connection to a wall box or public charging station is sold separately. There are three ride modes available, Eco, Rain and Road, to suit riding conditions with an additional power mode, Dynamic, which gives the CE04 quicker throttle response.

    Other specifications on the CE04 include twin disc brakes on the front wheel and a single disc at the rear with ABS fitted as standard equipment cornering ABS, known in BMW Motorrad parlance as ABS Pro, available as an option. The CE04 rolls on a 15-inch wheels, shod with 120/70 tyre in front and 160/60 at the back.

    Necessary information is displayed on a 10.25-inch TFT-LCD screen with smartphone connectivity and onscreen navigation. LED lighting is used throughout on the CE04 with Adaptive Headlight Pro available as an extra cost option.

    Entering the small scooter market in Malaysia is the 2022 Benelli Panarea 125 scooter, priced at RM6,888. Pricing does not include road tax, insurance or registration and the Panarea 125 comes with a 20,000 km or two-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

    Intended for the budget conscious commuter, the Panarea 125 comes with a 124 cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder mill with both electric and kick starting, fed by EFI. Power is rated at 8.44 HP at 7,500 rpm with 9.2 nm of torque at 6,000 rpm with power getting to the ground via CVT gearbox and belt drive.

    The Panarea 125 rolls on 12-inch wheels shod with 100/90 front and 110/90 rear tyres. Braking in done with a hydraulic single 190 mm diameter brake disc on the front wheel and a mechanical drum brake at the back.

    Suspension uses telescopic forks in front while a single shock absorber holds up the rear end. 4.6-litres of fuel is carried in the tank with the Panarea 125 tips the scales at 104 kg while seat height is set at 760 mm.

    Mounted on the handlebars is a combination analogue speedometer with a secondary LCD display showing all the necessary information the rider needs. There are four colour options available for the Panarea 125 – Black, Yellow, Red and White.

    Modenas Malaysia scores MIROS 5-star rating for Modenas Z250 and Ninja 250 ABS

    A Malaysia Motorcycle Assessment Program (MyMAP) five star rating has been awarded to Modenas for the Modenas Z250 ABS and Ninja 250 ABS. This comes after both motorcycle models passed a MyMAP assessment and audit at Modenas’ plant in Gurun, Kedah, in October.

    Under the MyMAP programme, both the Z250 naked sports and Ninja 250 sportsbike clocked identical scores on the chart. Scoring criteria includes adherence to UN Regulations on motorcycle safety standards, conformity of production, safety technology and the manufacturer’s rider safety support programme.

    MyMAP uses the same 5-star grading system as NCAP and each pillar carries a certain weightage to the total points. Participation in the MyMAP programme which is run under the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) is currently voluntary for all motorcycle manufacturers in Malaysia.

    2023 sees Indonesia subsidising sales of electric bikes

    Beginning 2023 Indonesia plans to subsidise electric motorcycles to increase affordability and stimulate sales. Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said Indonesia is finalising the scheme which will see 6.5 million rupiah (RM1,833) put towards each individual purchase of an electric motorcycle with a similar scheme being considered for cars.

    “If you want to swap your motorbike to electric one next year, do it. You will get a subsidy,” said Pandjaitan while addressing a banking forum. Indonesia plans to have at least 1.2 million electric motorcycles and 35,000 electric cars on the road by 2025, according to a Reuters report.

    Current uptake for electric vehicles in Indonesia is growing but industry groups have pointed the sales and adoption rate is low due to the higher purchase price. Indonesia has provided a tax rebate for sales of electric and hybrid vehicles since 2019.
