New entries into the Malaysian electric motorcycle (e-bike) scene are the TailG Ebixon Bold and Ebixon Torq electric scooters, priced at RM9,000 and RM14,999, respectively. Launched in Kuala Lumpur, the TailG e-bikes are imported from Tailing Electric Vehicle, Dongguan, China by Ni Hsin EV Tech and manufactured in its facility in Seri Kembangan, Selangor with pre-orders taken for delivery in the first quarter of 2023.

The two e-bikes on offer by Ni Hsin are intended for different market segments in Malaysia – the Bold for personal electric mobility and the Torq for the small business and delivery sector. As a delivery vehicle, the Torq comes with twin swappable 72 volt 50 Ah lithium batteries, equating to 7.2 kWh, weighing 23 kg each.

Charging uses domestic current with a claimed charging time between two to eight hours, using an off vehicle charger rated at an output of 72 volts DC at eight amperes. The batteries drive a brushless 72 volt hub-mounted electric motor rated at 5 kW and 74Nm of torque.

This gives the Torq a claimed range of 200 km and governed top speed of 90 km/h, and there are two colour choices available. Weight for the Torq is listed as 85 kg with a maximum vehicle payload of 233 kg. Braking is done with hydraulic discs front and rear, with 12-inch wheels shod with 90/90 and 110/70 tubeless tyres.

For the commuter rider, the Bold is intended for short journeys in urban areas, with a range of 120 km and a governed maximum speed of 70 km/h. This achieved by the use of twin 72 volt 22 Ah lithium swappable batteries – the equivalent of 3.17 kWh – weighing 11 kg each while a 1.5 kW hub-mounted electric motor delivers 35 Nm of torque.

Smart Tunnel reminds that motorcycles aren’t allowed in, no insurance coverage if an accident happens

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel, better known as the Smart Tunnel, is one of the stretches in the Klang Valley that motorcycles and heavy vehicles aren’t allowed access, and this has been the case in the 15 years the route has been in operation.

Recorded public notice that motorbikes are prohibited from using the tunnel go all the way back to 2008, and reminders continue today in the form of signage mounted at the various ingresses going into the four km-long, double-deck motorway.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped bikers from using the tunnel, with enough videos and posts on social media highlighting this illegal activity over the years, despite repeated calls for motorcyclists to stop doing so. The reason for denying its use to two-wheeled vehicles is simple – the tunnel is narrow, and the potential for mishaps are high.

Earlier today, its operator, Smart, once again issued a warning to motorcyclists that two-wheeled vehicles are not allowed access to the tunnel. In a tweet, Smart added the point that motorcyclists and pillion riders are not covered by insurance should they be involved in an accident inside the tunnel.

On its website, the company states that the only vehicles allowed to use the Smart Tunnel are passenger cars, MPVs and SUVs, the height of which does not exceed two metres. There are three entry/exit routes for the Smart Tunnel, namely at Sungai Besi, next to RMAF airport in Jalan Tun Razak, at the Kg Pandan roundabout, next to RHB Bank in Jalan Sultan Ismail and at the Park Royal Hotel traffic light, next to Berjaya Times Square.

2022 sees Ducati as MotoGP and WSBK team champs

A dominant season for Ducati Corse as the Italian team finishes the 2022 World Superbike Championship (WSBK) season in Philip Island, Australia, with the Team and Constructor’s titles. After clinching the rider’s World Championship title the previous week in Mandalika, Indonesia, Alvaro Bautista of Aruba.IT won the Superpole race before cementing Ducati’s name on the trophy for the manufacturer’s title.

This was done in convincing fashion as the Philip Island track was wet after a short downpour just before the start of Superpole. However, Bautista, starting in pole position, elected to remain with slick tyres front and rear causing him to slip to 16th position as the grid overtook him.

The gamble on using slicks paid off for Bautista as the track dried, with the Spaniard rapidly making his way to the front. Two laps from the end of Superpole, Bautista took the front position and went on to win the race.

A dry but red-flagged Race 2, five laps from the end, saw Bautista leading the pack after scrapping with Sam Lowes, Scott Redding, 2021 WSBK champion Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jonathan Rea with Red pushing hard for a win. “What can I say: I am really happy to have ended the season like this, giving great satisfaction to the whole Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team. I think the Superpole Race was one of the best victories for me in World Superbike,” said Bautista.

“On the grid, I spoke with Giulio (Nava) and I asked to put the slick on. I had confidence even though after the warm-up lap I had some doubts,” added the 37-year old rider from Talavera de la Reina, Spain.

The 37-year old, who hails from Kajang, Selangor, rides for Honda Asia-Dream Racing and this is his first time as ASB1000 champion, following his success in winning the 600 cc championship a few years ago.

Riding a Honda CBR1000RR-R, Zaqhwan entered the second race of the weekend, the fifth and final round of the series, as clear favourite, finishing fifth to clinch his ASB1000 title. Eventual winner of the race was Suhaithai Chaemsup of EEST NJT Racing, followed by Ikuhiro Enokido of SDG Motor Sports HARC-PRO Ph and 2019 ARRC ASB1000 champion Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman of ONEXOX BMW TKKR Team.

Motive power is the same as its stable mates, the Continental GT650 and Interceptor 650 (priced at RM48,500 and RM45,500 in Malaysia, respectively), an air-/oil-cooled parallel-twin displacing 650 cc and fed by EFI. The Super Meteor produces a claimed 47 PS at 7,250 rpm and 52.3 Nm of torque at 5,650 rpm with power going to the back wheel via chain drive and a six-speed gearbox.

Weighing in at 241 kg, the front end is held up by 43 mm diameter upside-down forks with a travel of 120 mm while the back is fitted with twin shock absorbers with 101 mm of travel and preload adjustment. • 2023 Aprilia RS660 Extrema – 100 hp, 166 kg

    2023 Aprilia RS660 Extrema – 100 hp, 166 kg

At the recent EICMA show in Italy, Aprilia presented the 2023 Aprilia RS660 Extrema. Touted as the sportiest version of the current RS 660 model range, the Extrema name calls back to the Aprilia 125 Extrema produced from 1992 to 1994.

The Extrema tips the scales at 166 kg dry, some 3 kg lighter than the standard Aprilia RS660. Power remains the same at 100 hp at 10,000 rpm and 67 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm from 660 cc, parallel-twin mill.

Weight savings is achieved by the use of a new and lighter street-legal exhaust system by SC Project with carbon silencer. Unlike the “base” RS660 which has the exhaust can sitting underneath the engine, the Extrema has its exhaust placed on the right side.

More weight is reduced with the use of front mudguard and new design belly pan in carbon-fibre. A single-seat cowl replaces the pillion seating of the RS660, with the pillion seat supplied should the rider desire to put the Extrema to dual-seat duty.

The Extrema comes with a full suite of riding aids including traction control, cornering ABS, engine brake, engine map, and wheelie control – all adjustable. An added feature of the Extrema is software that allows the rider to set the standard equipment quickshifter in race shift pattern.

  • 2022 KTM 890 Duke R and RC390 first ride in Malaysia

2022 KTM 890 Duke R and RC390 first ride in Malaysia

With the release of the 2022 KTM 890 Duke R naked sports (priced at RM75,800) and the RC390 (RM33,800) sportsbike in Malaysia, paultan.org was invited to take both out for a media test ride at Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Intended for very different market segments, the 890 Duke R and RC390 round out KTM’s stable of road bikes in Malaysia.

For the 890 Duke R, this naked sports goes up against the likes of the Ducati Monster and Streetfighter V2, Triumph 765RS and Yamaha MT-09 in the local market. A development of the previous generation Duke 790 “The Scalpel”, the 890 Duke R gets the tinker “The Super Scalpel” and turns things up a notch.

Like the 790, the 890 Duke R carries a parallel-twin power plant, in this form putting out 119 hp and 99 Nm of torque from 889 cc. As typical for KTM motorcycles, power goes through a six-speed gearbox – an optional up-and-down quickshifter is availabe – and PASC slipper clutch with chain drive to the rear wheel.

2022 KTM 890 Duke R and RC390 first ride in Malaysia

As we were briefed on the day, the 890 Duke R is intended as a performance middleweight, for the rider who appreciates lots of engine torque and precise handling. This is borne out by the fully-adjustable WP front fork, with tuneable compression and rebound and fully-adjustable WP Apex monoshock at the back, with hydraulically adjustable preload as well as compression and rebound.

The suspension is coupled with lightweight alloy wheels, minimising unsprung mass and allowing for faster turn-in and changes of direction. Taking the 890 Duke R out on the track, the bike was set to Sport mode, one of four available modes the others being Street, Rain and Track mode which switches off rear wheel ABS.

The stripped back, racing feel of the Scout Rogue by Hardnine is also enhanced by miniature turn signals and the removal of the front fender for that flat tracker style. Completing the look, Schneider’s Scout Rogue gets a bobbed rear fender and minimalist turn signals.

2022 ATC: Hakim Danish first ever Malaysian champ

At the conclusion of the 2022 Asia Talent Cup (ATC) round in Mandalika, Indonesia on the weekend, Malaysian motorcycle racer Hakim Danish emerged champion. This is the first time a Malaysian has won the ATC riders’ championship, with Hakim standing on the podium seven times during the season, four times on the top step.

In a hard fought battle in Race 1 with Shinya Ezawa which saw the duo swapping places with Briton Carter Thompson, Hakim ended the day with a narrow six point lead over Ezawa. paultan.org spoke to Hakim on the day, with the young Terengganu lad saying with his P3 grid start position, he was hoping for a quick takeoff at the beginning to put some distance between himself and the pack.

2022 ATC: Hakim Danish first ever Malaysian champ

During Race 2, Hakim managed a clean start but got caught in a fracas, with him brushing fairings with another rider and losing some places. Hakim quickly and successfully performed several overtakes, leaving the rest of the ATC racers behind and chasing down eventual race winner Veda Ega Pratama of Indonesia.

Settling down into second position behind Pratama who showed an admirable turn of speed, at one point gapping third place finisher Ezawa by almost 10 seconds, Hakim played the safe game to clinch the championship. “I am really happy with this 2022 season. I would like to say thank you to all my sponsors, my family, ZK Racing crews, Asia Talent Cup crews, and to everyone who supported me. I will work harder and achieve more titles in the future,” said Hakim.

2022 EICMA: Italjet Dragster 500 concept revealed

Showing up at the EICMA motorcycle show in Italy is the Italjet Dragster 500 Concept. Like the Italjet Dragster 125 (RM29,500) and Dragster 200 (RM34,800) recently launched in Malaysia, the Dragster 500 features a minimalist industrial design with frame on display.

A 160-section rear tyre fills up the rear end of the Dragster 500, fitted to a 15-inch wheel. Italjet says the Dragster 500 weighs about 180 kg with 12 litres of fuel in the tank and is expected to enter the scooter market in 2024.
