DRIVEN: Proton Iriz 1.6 CVT – first driving impressions

Iriz_etc_15

Proton hasn’t really had a good track record at building a small car. In its nearly 30 years of existence, it actually only made two. The Tiara, launched in 1996, was based on the ageing Citroën AX (which by then was already reaching its 10th year on the market) and was saddled with the usual French reliability problems. The car was discontinued after just four years due to low demand.

Looking to right those wrongs, the company introduced the Savvy in 2005 (famously, it was launched barely a month after the Perodua Myvi, which went on to become Malaysia’s most popular car). Proton spent a great deal of effort to banish its reputation of poor quality with this car – even going so far as to getting the Savvy audited by the TÜV Rheinland Group – but hobbled it by failing to provide a proper automatic option, as the sole self-shifting ‘box was a Renault-sourced automated manual transmission.

Since then, Proton has pretty much stayed off Perodua’s turf, a domain Malaysia’s second national carmaker dominated from the start. Sure, there is the Saga, which sells at under the RM50k mark. But it’s a sedan, and the prices it commands straddle between those of the Axia and the Myvi.

But now there’s the new Proton Iriz, developed and priced squarely to compete against the Myvi in both specs and price. It’s hard not to be impressed by the company’s ambitions – the car has apparently been benchmarked against the Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo, the latter in particular in terms of build quality. But does it all add up? We take a (very) short drive on the roads near the Tanjung Malim plant to find out.

DRIVEN: Proton Iriz 1.6 CVT – first driving impressions

First of, it’s a looker, isn’t it, the Iriz? Certainly, the large, swept back projector headlamps and gaping lower grille will give it oodles of road presence, while at the side, the steeply-rising beltline is echoed by the “dynamic” shoulder line and the lower “side blades”, contributing to a wedge-shaped profile. The rear of the car is probably its most distinctive (and perhaps controversial) aspect, with slim, tall LED combination tail lights set into a “chamfered” section.

As a whole, it’s an edgy, well-proportioned design, with just enough character to stand out in a sea of B-segment hatchbacks. The bodykit on the Executive and Premium variants is perhaps a little overdone for this writer’s tastes, but at least it fits well with the sporty looks of the rest of the car. The 15-inch wheels on the 1.6 litre models look excellent – the smaller 14-inch six-spoke wheels less so, but at least alloys are standard fitment throughout the range.

Measuring 3,905 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,550 mm tall, the Iriz is 215 mm longer, 55 mm wider and 5 mm taller than the Myvi, while its 2,555 mm wheelbase also bests the Myvi’s by 115 mm. The near-four metre width makes it one of the longer cars in the segment, just a few centimetres shorter than the Honda Jazz (3,955 mm), the Fiesta (3,982 mm) and the Polo (3,970 mm).

Proton claims class-leading space inside, although the Iriz’ cabin is still not quite as capacious as the Honda Jazz. Still, there’s plenty of room in here, even for five full-sized adults. Boot space, meanwhile, trumps the Myvi’s (215 litres versus 208), but that still trends towards the lower end of the market – and don’t forget that the Axia from a segment down can hold 45 litres more behind its tailgate.

Iriz_1600E_05

Of more interest for this car is the interior itself, and here is where Proton has finally made the improvement in perceived quality it so desperately needed. It looks clean and modern, if perhaps a little dour next to the exterior, but everything is where it should be and works as intended. More to the point, everything feels well screwed together and most of the plastics, although hard, feel great to the touch, particularly the faux leather stitching. Only a few low-rent materials dotted around the cabin let the side down.

Proton has got to be commended for the level of safety equipment on the Iriz. Every model gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist (BA), Hill Hold Assist (HHA) and even Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and traction control. The Premium model adds side and curtain airbags to make it six in total, but that’s the only thing that separates the top of the range from the base model in terms of safety.

Under the bonnet sit a pair of new engines for Proton – 1.3 and 1.6 litre four-pots, both now featuring variable valve timing (VVT) on the intake side. The 1.3 produces 94 hp at 5,750 rpm and 120 Nm at 4,000 rpm, while the 1.6 delivers 107 hp and 150 Nm at the same engine speeds.

These aren’t just the old Campro engines with VVT tacked on, because the engines also feature a new block, pistons and valves. Proton says these mills are the first in a new engine family that will power future models, finally sending the 10-year-old Campro into retirement. Transmission choices, meanwhile, are a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Iriz_etc_17

Beneath the skin, there’s a new platform that has been designed to accommodate hybrid and electric powertrains. Suspension is handled by MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear – par for the course in this segment – while the brakes are ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear.

We were allowed to take an Iriz 1.6 Executive CVT on a drive along some of the main roads of a very rainy Proton City in Tanjung Malim. While the experience with it was but fleeting (our time spent in the car was all of 15 minutes), it did give us a peek of its character and capabilities.

First, the good news. Despite carrying four adults (including Izwaashura Sadali of our sister page InfoKereta.com) as well as a host of camera equipment, the ride comfort was exemplary. The suspension effortlessly smoothed out the choppy roads on our test route, a feat which many cars in this segment still find difficult to master. Road and wind noise was well insulated too, the only significant noise being the heavy rain pelting onto the windscreen.

As the route consisted of long straights with a U-turn at either end, it was almost impossible to provide a thorough assessment of the car’s handling, which would have to wait for a proper test drive. We did, however, find the steering to be rather accurate, if a bit slow, and has a nice weight to it at speed. It did feel a little inert, though, a trait undoubtedly brought on by the new electric power steering system.

Iriz_etc_18

A consequence of the car’s excellent ride was some body roll in the corners, but grip levels through the Silverstone Synergy M5 tyres remained high even on wet tarmac.

The engine felt revvy, if a bit tight – the car showed less than 30 km on the odometer. That enthusiasm from the motor was stifled somewhat by its sedate throttle mapping, presumably tuned for fuel-saving reasons. Combined with the sluggish CVT, it made the car feel slightly strained under acceleration.

The transmission also has the tendency to hold on to lower ratios for longer than usual, causing the engine to linger at higher revs. This exposed another weakness of the engine, namely its slightly raucous nature under load, accompanied by some vibration felt throughout the car. This is, however, a pre-production prototype that hasn’t been run in, and we expect final units to be rather more refined.

Overall, despite the brevity of this taster, the Proton Iriz shows some great potential. It does a lot of things right – it rides and handles nicely, the interior finally feels up to snuff and it looks great – but it’s just missing a final level of polish on this occasion to stand at the top of class. We’ll see if that polish is there on the actual production car when we do a more comprehensive review at a later date.

UPDATE: Our full comprehensive review of the production-spec Proton Iriz (1.3 and 1.6 engines, manual and CVT) is now up.

If Proton can capture Japanese/Korean market, they will dominate global car sales… Literally dominate >90% global market. If you had visited those two countries on regular basis, you’ll notice that >90% of the cars are local brands, I barely saw any continental exports over there aside of scarcely occasional full size luxury sedans or supercars, and that is once a day if i’m lucky, of once a month if I’m not.

Being “patriotic” doesn’t mean you have to buy or use things made in this country. If you only support the “small” progress made by Proton in this case instead of ridicule it,that should be enough to be considered “Patriotic”. I know Proton still have a long way to compete against the Japanese or European made car, but the beast called possibility is unpredictable. No hard feelings. Just an opinion.

”This also implies that Proton will not be able to export the Iriz to many developed markets unless it produces an engine that meets Euro-6 emission standard.

The short-term solution would be for Proton to source the engine from other manufacturers.

Agreed on the rough engine note during hard acceleration. When prodded lightly, the throttle response is slow, but with a bit additional pressure on the pedal, suddenly the RPM shoots up to 4-5K RPM, and you can hear the rough engine noise and a bit of vibration throughout the cabin.

Most people will choose this over Myvi, but some will choose Myvi due to road tax, design (we can’t expect everyone to like Iriz’s design), RV and PERHAPS service cost (to be confirmed) and fuel consumption (depends on driver, tyres, road conditions etc). However, safety isn’t a reason, except for ignorant and narrow-minded people (aka Sam Loo). With HPF technology (used in German cars) and active safety systems like VSC and TC, Myvi has no match (heck, even the Axia scored better than Myvi in ASEAN NCAP score).
As always, there’s pros and cons. it depends on your needs. No need for quarrel. Also, don’t drag Proton into politics. Proton has no choice but to get funds from the government because the people are not buying their products, don’t expect money falls from the sky into Proton’s R&D. Perodua has better quality because it’s a rebadge, therefore requiring lesser R&D cost compared to Proton.

so you are saying for the good part of nearly 30 years of existence of proton in our country, it had just been a semi-national carmaker? since their first “fully-produced-by-themselves” car was the Gen.2, which was launched slightly more than 10 years ago. even waja when first came out was still using mitsubishi engine and transmission.

But you can’t change what it is they are doing. Whether you agree or disagree, they’re rebadging Daihatsu cars. That doesn’t just mean taking out the Daihatsu badge and inserting the Perodua badge. They can change its outward appearance and even the engine and it’ll still be a rebadge because they use their platform.

I don’t think there is shame in it in the automotive industry, but some people sure make a big deal about it.

that’s my point actually. don’t undermine other peoples’ effort. it’s as if rebadge or building something on top of any currently available platform can be done overnight, and can be done by anyone from 3 years old to 80 years old.

just because they don’t do that much of R&D, doesn’t mean they are playing around all the while, and many malaysians were “jinxed” in some way into buying their products, so they can have some very easy success or something.

I understand where you’re coming from but a rebadge is still a rebadge. Those who understand how the system works and who really see what Perodua has done wouldn’t say that they just do a simply badge swap. They do have R&D on how the cars can best be adapted to the local needs and wants. They can change the materials and those things too, if they want. They can bring in better safety equipment too, if they want and see a need for it.

Check out Toyota Passo/ Daihatsu Boon. I don’t see how you can call it ‘national car’ when it’s a rebadged car built in Malaysia. If it’s a national car because it’s built in Malaysia, Jazz is a national car too. Volvo S60 is a national car too.

      • Perodua falls under national car assembler category lah, they don’t develop cars from scratch. Yes, they do spend some money to do R&D on certain things, but things like engine, drivetrain, chassis schematics, are all derived directly from the model that they rebadge. But I can’t blame Malaysian consumers for opting Perodua cars more than proton, because smart people like to play safe (buying cars with proven tech; i.e. rebadged cars). And that is also why Proton Inspira is selling well compared to Lancer, because it is a direct rebadge over the latter and with lesser price tag.

Agree with “Perodua has better quality because it’s a rebadge, therefore requiring lesser R&D cost compared to Proton”. That’s why they manage to come out with two different front bumper designs for Axia as they don’t need to spend much R&D (or rather none) on engine technology and body platform.

The transmission also has the tendency to hold on to lower ratios for longer than usual, causing the engine to linger at higher revs.

that was my thought as well..

i don’t have a chance to test drive but here are some questions/concerns:
      1) power-to-mass ratio of this car is not that high, hence acceleration is an issue
      2) responsiveness of the transmission
      3) NVH: how does this compared to City/Jazz?

Proton cars are heavy, compared to others. Besides working on a better engine, this is another area that they need to put focus on to achieve better fuel consumption. My first impression from this posting is that this Iriz is not quite there yet. Please prove me wrong when you’re doing the full test drive. If not, then proton still has a long way to go …

Transmission holding on to lower ratio? This is a CVT, with an infinite number of effective gear ratio. What you felt would be the rubber-band effect before it settles at the most efficient RPM. To say, that the intent of CVT is not really performance lah. But once you get going, in-gear acceleration should be OK without penalty on FC.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 34 Thumb down 0
    • Obviously (Member) on Sep 26, 2014 at 3:12 pm

Yup, sounds like the rubber-band effect but that doesn’t totally discredit the “gear ratio” thing. CVTs can be programmed to simulate virtual ratios and they can be programmed to hold certain gear ratio configurations under certain conditions for the duration of those conditions.

For me, it proves that Proton still has ways to go before they nail the programming for CVTs. CVTs can be so much more than just an efficiency gearbox.

I do understand the gear ratio thing. It is only that the last I checked, unlike Preve, P1 do not put the SAT to simulate the 7 gear ratios in Iriz’s CVT.

I drive a Sylphy and have grown very adept with my right foot to nail the acceleration without needing to simulate a conventional gear ratio. I “win” traffic lights drags (but will eventually drop back coz low hp….. heheheh).

It’s probable that the engineers took the lesson with Preve a bit too far and made the ratio to hold a bit longer. In my test drives of Preve previously, it made sense to keep the low artificial ratio (using paddle shifters) and only let go once u got that clean getaway. So without SAT in the latest CVT requires the gear to hold at the torque needed, and as a result the new engine sounded coarse. Once the engine is properly run-in, the engine should get more refined.

In time the (good) drivers will learn the torque curve and shall find the sweet RPM spot to maximize the performance of whatever car u drive.

Maybe Myvi wins on the acceleration segment for 1.3 version. I suggest go for 1.6 version for people who always bring full load. Nevertheless, the driving experience of Iriz is comparable with conti cars. It feels stable and solid during high speed. VH also far better than Myvi (You don’t feel like you drive a hatchback rather more like a C-Segment sedans). Conclusion: Well done Proton. It is a good car. I think the performance is to be expected.

It IS still a nearly 1200kg car…and no lightweight that the 150Nm will need to haul. Perhaps more obvious saddled with the CVT. Not sure if the gearboxes are the same, but I drove a Suprima S and found the gearbox to be fiddly and indecisive at the best of times. The only saving grace is that the Suprima has more torque, so wrong ratios are not too much an issue.

I think the manual will be the gearbox to get.

Iriz has all the thing which myvi lack of, and it is really way better than Myvi in every expect. But from the review above, the drivetrain sounds disappointing and really hope that Iriz’s drivetrain will be as refind as myvi, or even better in the real drive unit. #fingercrossed.

Proton, hope you get the quality and reliability issues ironed out first. Reputation-building is a MUST from here on end. Focus on the sponge of the cake, before marketing the fancy cream icing. No point in all the features if later on the car breaks down and interior parts fall off. Learn from your past mistakes. I sincerely wish this brand the best.

I sure hope the refinement is at least on Par with Myvi(better would be great) . I’ve driven the suprima , while it’s faster, more features and safer then most car in its price range the refinement is poor . Noisy engine and unpredictable gearbox is its achilles heel . Lets hope PCC fixes these problems . Because sometimes perceived quality is just as important as quality itself . A car with poor perceived quality gives us the impression of low quality car . Best of luck proton . And drive safe everyone:)

    copy pasta.

…Well, just got back from a test drive, speaking from a Myvi 1.5(M) and Persona 1.6(M) user’s perspective, so bear with me. I tested the 1.3(M) Premium in green.

Build quality : Miles above all proton and perodua cars. Enough said. Everything looks good, buttons click nicely. Everything is very reassuring. The seats are very comfortable and the jacking action is very smooth and well damped, unlike the persona and myvi. All the features and buttons are logically placed and easily accessible. The wiper and signal stalk action is nice and solid with a discernible clicky feeling, but no audible clicking sound, very comparable to the myvi’s (the ones in persona is very creaky and noisy). The signal sound is also different from the myvi and persona, a deeper and softer sound, giving a higher quality sensation from it. The gear action is very smooth, unlike the myvi’s odd long and dodgy gear feel (masuk gear but feel macam x masuk for the myvi). There were no creaks or anything for that matter to indicate a poor build quality in the unit i tested. Everything is very well put together, panel gaps is also improved tremendously comparing against the persona (my myvi somehow have this weird rattling from the glove box, it was there from day one so it’s pleasing to see proton improving in this area).

Notable features: Starting requires you to depress the clutch, which is a safety feature. No complains there. I really love the tap to switch lane signal feature. A very convenient feature to have and i love that they repositioned the button to toggle through the MID at the right stalk (easier to access during driving). The radio sounds absolutely good unlike the Myvi’s tinny and hollow sound, but that’s expected for a proton. The USB charging ports are a big plus point, can’t seem to think why more car manufacturers can’t implement this. It’s the little things that matters most.

Drive: Gear change is buttery smooth. No shakes and judders to report here (the manual myvi really sucks as this). Got stuck in a traffic jam during the test drive, so I can vouch that the manual trans is excellent for all situations. The Myvi’s trans is just absolutely crappy during jams. At least once the engine will stall, especially during jams at hilly areas. The acceleration is good enough with 3 people including myself in the car (I wouldn’t call it underpowered, but that’s just me). Engine noise and NVH is significantly improved! I gunned the engine hard until roughly 6000 rpm in 2nd and 3rd and the noise level were very acceptable. I dare say better than my myvi (the persona on the other hand is absolutely hopeless, underpowered and very noisy). RPM for 60 kmh in 5th was 1500 roughly. Lowest fuel consumption noted during the drive was at 60 in 5th 4.5L/100 km (Fluctuates from 3.3-5 ish L/100km). The absorbers does their job very well, as i drove quite hard into a patch of road under construction and i barely felt it. Only the bigger gashes will unsettle this car, but even then it’s still far better than the rock hard absorbers found on the myvi. The EPS feels excellent, it’s not as heavy as the persona’s but it’s not as effortless as the myvi’s, a very good compromise as i found that the myvi’s steering is rather too light, especially at highway speeds. There were also no vibrations or noise from the engine compartment intruding the cabin at stationary conditions (the myvi still wins at this though, but not by much. Often i wonder if my engine has stalled during stop and go traffic with the myvi)…

A good test drive & review of the Iriz by a MyVi owner. Thanks. FYI I once drove a newly registered MyVi Extreme from KL to Kelantan and found it so underpower compared to my father’s 17 year old Wira. Don’t get me wrong, all I want to say here is when it’s a smaller in size & lighter it suppose to have no power issue compares to a bigger & heavier cars with the same cc but I was frustrated.

    Myvi will beat Iriz :

    1) Engine refinement – Myvi engine more refine and silent.
    2) Better pick up/acceleration for Myvi and is good for town used.
    3) better fuel consumption for Myvi with lighter body weight.
    4) Reliability – proven a bullet proof engine for the past 10 years (another rough compro engine and reliability is unknown?)
    5) Timing Chain for Myvi will cost less to maintain.
    6) Resale value – Myvi easy to sell and resale value is good. Proton famous of poor sale value and need to use it till rot. (can not sell cause loan is higher than the selling cost)
    7) Myvi part is cheap and easily available in any tyre shop. Iriz will end up another Tiara and Savvy where costly part will kill the owner.

God luck Iriz, and hope no more subsidies from Taxpayer money from poor sale.

the design for this new proton has much improved compared to my saga blm. like all the interior and exterior.

yet, still get disappointed when read about the engine performance and gearbox. haven’t get on test drive yet, and hopefully it will impress a bit. as test drove both preve and suprima s before, was quite impressed on the improvements on suprima s. yet, failed due to bad insulations. for such a good car, i’m amazed proton doesn’t put insulation in between engine and cockpit….

hope proton can hear this out.

Look, instead of quarrelling over booking figures etc., why not we go for a test drive and buy whichever car we think is worth your money. Pre-launch bookings are pre-launch bookings. The figures show very little of how good the car is. Don’t just blindly follow what other people/salesman tell you about the cars. Test drive them, do some homework… be wise. I would go as far as advising people never to trust the words of a car salesman.

If you want power, go for the manual. The CVT is designed for women. It will stay at low rev in D by default and to override it, you have to floor the pedal. Only then the engine will rev at higher rpm and stay there. This driving style is known to be developed and perfected by women.

    Women ruined car for men.

    • Tested Exora Turbo, the RPM stayed once you push the pedal. I stopped at junction. When the green light turned on, I don’t floor it, just till the turbo kicks in about 2100RPM. Just in seconds, I already far in front, right behind those moving motorbikes while those cars were getting smaller behind! Yikes, it’s so fast!

At 1175kg, the Iris Premium is heavier than the ‘bigger’ Almera Vios and City (less than 1100kg). The old Waja manual which is considered bulky during its heyday has a kerb weight of 1185kg. Proton really has an uphill task to prove that the new VVT mill is fuel efficient & refined (quiet and smooth) with that kind of kerb weight.

Perhaps Paultan can do cabin noise test under different loads & speed, and also the urban fuel consumption test. The Iriz has scored well on most areas, the only things left are the fuel consumption & NVH-refinement.

    Strategy and Target:
    1) Axia apparently target all those 1st time buyer, so it will get Saga + want to buy MyVi customer
    2) Iriz target MyVi upgrade, and Jazz owner and or fist time buyer?
If fist time buyer (Saga initial), Axia hands down due to price
If you been driven MyVi for 5 years…and wanted to upgrade, will you choose Iriz? i doubted, they will foreign for sure

Have you seen more Indian cars than foreign cars in India? NO
Have you seen more British cars than foreign cars in Britain? NO
These countries have their own car manufacturer but they are not good enough to compete with the big boys, as simple as that.. China and India cut corners while the British are being too arrogant and level of improvement is not on par with European rivals, look at British Leyland.. Majority of British cars are saved Germans.

PSA (Citroen+Peugeot), Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai and GM are already ranked on top as top manufacturers in the world, no surprise why their citizens support so much on their own brand..

We are far far far INFERIOR in terms of level of complaint compare to advance country like Singapore..

having living abroad in various countries, you have no idea the level of complaint and the level of willing to improve in advance countries..

Malaysia I would call “tak apa” attitude, while other countries like Germany and Japan “stay uncompromised” that brought their technology to greater heights..

The quality of product from a country has a lot to do with the culture and attitude of the country.. German and Japanese’s discipline, the Swiss obsession in precision and the Swedish obsession in safety

We are still consider pretty layback comparing with other countries..

The 1.6CVT is too powerful for such a small car, however, there is a half a second power kick in delay when stepped on the accelerator from stand still for the CVT. The 1.6CVT is very nervous to drive as the car jerk forward whenever stepping on the accelerator and need some time to get use to and very loud CVT. Prefer the 1.3MT smoother and quieter drive. FYI, you need to step on the clutch to start the engine for the manual transmission, a good safety feature.

The dashboard looks nice until you touch it, yes, hard plastic. Fake leather stitching (available on all variants) actually looks nice only to be disappointed by the small and unattractive speedometer and rev meter. Overall interior is very well fitted. Back seats a bit cramped if the front seats are positioned too far back.

The exterior looks very nice at the front and ok for the back.

  • Has anyone consider Iriz vs Jazz comparison?

I think we need to be a smart consumer considering the overall cost of ownership rather than being enticed by its “lower price than foreign car” mentality..

We need to consider for national car, hire purchase is rate is higher than foreign new car, can be as much as 0.05% different, also Iriz fuel consumption is “freaking high”.. 13.5km/L NDEC cycle is really disappointing.

Lets calculate the cost of ownership of Iriz:
    1.6 CVT – RM65,000 (OTR)
    DP: 10%
Loan: 90% for 7yrs with 3.3% interest rate
    monthly installment: 857
Petrol RON95 (RM2.1/L), assuming 2000km per month, FC 10km/L (real life driving always more suck than publish figure) = RM420
    Commitment permonth: RM1277

Honda Jazz 1.5L V (top spec): RM87,000 OTR
    DP: 10%
Loan: 90% for 7yrs with 2.8% interest rate
    monthly installment: RM1115
Petrol RON95 (RM2.1/L), assuming 2000km per month, FC 15km/L (it share the same drive train as Honda City, checkout paultan video on Honda City FC) = RM280
    Commitment permonth: RM1395

Monthly commitment is actually not that far off, about RM118 difference. Of course I havent factor in maintenance, and annual insurance.. but hey, Honda is offering free labor for 1,000km, 10,000km, 30,000km, 50,000km, 70,000km and 90,000km. If government decide to reduce fuel subsidy in near future and fuel price increase, the gap of ownership of both cars will become narrower.. all thanks to Iriz bad fuel efficiency and Jazz superior frugal drive train

The point is the difference in ownership cost is actually not that very far off for both cars.. Because of the high interest rate for national car and Iriz poor fuel economy, It make better sense not to look at just absolute selling price, but consider the overall package.

What you get in Honda Jazz V is on par with Iriz premium in terms of safety, VSC, ABS, 6 airbags, 5 star crashtest, touch screen, push start button etc.. Moreover Jazz has 363L boot space compare to Iriz 215L (gosh, what is this). Jazz magic versatile seats that can create more space.

Not to mention Jazz more refined engine and more horsepower than Iriz (Jazz 1.5L 120PS vs Iriz 1.6L 107PS)
Japanese made cars are usually built to last, thus its better peace of mind than Proton experimenting new engine with the Iriz and everyone know their SC tak apa attitude.

At the same time.. Honda has a reputation as Resell King.. and to majority of Msia mind set, its a Honda, must be good..

Just my 2c for the rest of the consumers to ponder.

where do you get 10Km a liter? even under European Stress Test, Iriz managed to get FC around 13 or 14 km a liter if i not mistaken

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 4
      • As I mentioned,NDEC or any test cycler are always quite ideal figure. Test cycle FC for Honda City 17.8km/L, actual 15km/L tested in paultan review video, my VW Polo Test cycle FC 18.8km/L, but my actual FC is ranging 15-16km/L.. Iriz NDEC test 13.5km/L, do you think it can do on par with that figure? Iriz NDEC cycle FC is even worse than City n Polo actual FC..

If you wish to compare petrol budget based on published figures, fine.. lets compare..
With 2000km per month, petrol budget for Iriz (13.5km/L) is Rm311 while Jazz (17.8km/L since using same power train as City) is Rm235, still a big difference by ~rm80 permonth

You also forgot to mention that THIS proton iriz is free services for 3 year and 5 year warranty. I don’t know where you get those NDEC rating for that Jazz and Polo, but according to caradvice its way more higher (jazz 8.7l/100km and polo 10.7l/100km) . About the engine reliability, I don’t think they will have issues (I have gen 2, exora bold and savvy) except in some part where it have minor wear and tear

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 2
          • since car advise are taking samples of various drivers from various driving characteristics, you can see some are getting 16km/L for Jazz n Polo, some are getting 10km/L.

For apple to apple comparison, we use published figure to normalize the baseline to compare.. still Iriz is way to high for its FC

also Iriz is using new engine different than any existing proton cars..

      Hi there.

Please get your fact right before make such a lousy comment.

The proton loan interest only 2.9%. Where the hell you get 3.3%? try to make out the story there?

Besides, the Premium 1.6L cvt OTR priced 62888. Where you get your 65k data? Please visit the showroom now for the latest pricing list!

monthly only RM811 only. Let’s say your FC correct is RM420. it was RM1231. Different RM164.

Myself monthly travel around 600-1000km only.

The cost changed for me. petrol only rm210 for Iriz and Rm140 for jazz? I don’t think so but still i stick to your FC. It makes iriz total ownership per month become RM1021 and Jazz become RM1255. Please take note Honda original item not cheap. :)

      • You may check with banks with the latest interest rate after OPR increase last month. Before OPR increase, Non national cars interest rate was as low as 2.4 – 2.5.. now they have increase it…

I have check the webpage and it did not specify 62k including insurance while jazz has already include insurance premium..

Is it up to you to compare.. To my, unless its a whooping 20% to 30% lower in cost of ownership, I will consider bcos Proton is given the “protection” and tax incentive to buy their car.. but its just a mere 10% to 20% cheaper considering the total cost of owning it, I would rather pay a premium for a better build car.. no offence, engine and cabin refinement is still a lot to improve for proton.

If you are doing lower mileage permonth is fine for you.. but for ppl who do a lot of mileage is something to think about..

As I mention, its something to ponder on..

This is why i ask u to go showroom.

I am getting RM62888 and interest rate only 2.9% from all their panel bank.

No point to argue on paper. I tested both Iriz and Jazz. The only thing people may argue is FC but this cannot confirm since no one actually running it OTR right now.

Anyway, I am not going to buy any of those car. I am looking for C segment now. My prior exp as Proton car owner and toyota owner tells me both got pro n cons.

I am moving out to try different brand. Unless Proton could give those features in Preve, I might reconsider them again.

Btw, my previous exp driving a saga blm says it can make it 16 cent per km when RM1.90/L Ron 95. some of my friend can make it even lower. :)

Oh ya… one deal-breaking issue with the car. The rear bench, when sitting at the side, you will feel that the cushion near the edge is a bit soft, and it causes your body to slightly slant to the side. For example, if you sit behind the driver, the cushion near your right butt will feel softer, and you will feel like slanting to the right side.

I remembered your comment while sitting for a test drive in the back with 2 more people and experienced no issues with that. I think the most uncomfortable part of sitting at the rear were those headrests – they hurt my shoulder after awhile as I was squeezed right on the door. The rear legroom is smaller than the Myvi and you have to bunch up your legs to fit

As a Proton Persona owner, let me fill in the gaps where this writer is afraid to provide. I find the engine sound loud & intrusive inside passenger cabin. Even my 7 yr old persona engine is significantly quieter be it during idle or revving. Since the car was tested during rain, he missed out on poor tire noise insulation. In dry normal tar road, you can hear tire noise while driving at 60kmh onwards. As you pick up speed, the road sound adds to the loud engine+cvt noise. After so long, the engine refinement is still not there amongst the foreign makes which it intends to compete & benchmark. Iriz will have to priced lower than these cars over in ASEAN countries if exported because while technical specs on paper may be at par, the actual product, refinement & driving characteristics is still not there yet. Also for the manual drive, the gearstick is too high + couple with long shifts, makes me feel like shifting a broomstick. In this area, my manual Persona gear shift is way better. I’m now hesitating to purchase this car as I was hoping to replace my sons car with it. Well I will pass my Persona to him & I get something else instead.

When Iriz was launched I was really impressed with the looks and I was comparing this with the Jazz. I told my wife we should consider Iriz too but she refused to even go to the showroom despite me convincing her profusely.

Having experienced owning a Proton Saga 1.3, Proton Saga 1.5 Magma, Proton Iswara 1.3, Proton Wira 1.5, Proton Wira 1.6, Persona and Waja, we decided to get the Jazz instead. I also own a Honda now.

What I did was to look at the car and see myself with it for the next 3 years. For a Honda, it’s service, drive it and problem free. My 3 year old Honda was like how it was the first time I drove it.

I can’t say the same for Proton though, having owned 7 Protons, I have experienced going to service centers multiple times and the quality of the cars (in terms of assembly) will deteriorate after 8-12 months of owning it. So you start to feel vibrations, buttons falling out, power windows, sound in dashboard, etc. The Waja and the Persona were the worst. When Savvy was launched we considered that too but we bought the Myvi instead and never looked back – Myvi was a fantastic car which we own for 6 years – absolute workhorse and problem free.

I am not sure about Iriz but if Proton is going to convince me, they will need to have at least 2-3 more new models after Iriz to do so. For now, the best way to test the Iriz is to test drive a 2nd hand Iriz (2-3 years old) to see how good the car is. If it’s good, then you can consider buying it. Otherwise it’s going to be in my “buy at your own risk” category. I did that with Myvi but because we had a Kancil which was again a fantastic car, we decided to take a gamble on Myvi.

I test drove a 2 year old Honda Jazz, it was magnificent and that is why I bought a Honda Jazz 2 days ago.

    • I had a reversed experience compare to you. My brother once own a Myvi and it was hell of a headache.. We had it for 3 years and during the 3rd year, the whole cabin vibrates like no tomorrow when we drive it on rough roads.. We then changed to Persona, though there were problems like water leak and faulty sensors but those are just about it’s problems.. We then bought another 2nd hand unit and it served us for the 5th year now.. No major probs at all..

handling superb..small and nimble, felt like driving a gokart with steroids.

infotaiment are good..sound systems easily beats of any sound system like bose, sony or jbl..similar to beats by dre headphones speakers but larger.

engine..tiptop 10 thumbs up! eventhou small, its powerful..its exhaust fumes smells like Ferrari Italia V12..magnificent!

on the 3000 rpm and so, the VVT valves open, feel the G force kicked in, feel awesome and accelerate pretty fast from still to 100kmh, faster than B18C vtec with hondata and toda cams.

well..im gonna sell my ferrari then buy this proton iriz…its just a masterpiece.

I am totally dissapointed by this car..only good thing is the ESC. Build quality is decent. But if i drive this car, i would go crazy listening to the noise.

Here is the long and short – You can’t make enough profit from copying someone if you don’t have a big price difference. Lets assume you split the market between MyVi and Iriz, is there enough profit? Highly unlikely. In the meantime Perodua is raking in profit with Axia..Proton still getting it wrong because its original DNA was wrong and can’t be changed..

wow you guys are really being kind here…. they dont have a track record at building anything good. Just fyi… my family had a iswara and myself a savvy… the iswara to be honest is quite reliable, spartan but does its job but eventually when the finances became better we changed to a better ride; the savvy.. however.. sigh… cheap car but very expensive to maintain. i really hope proton bucks up and do well but no confidence anymore la, come on 30 overs already what else you expect. imagine being 30 years old and no being able to feed yourself, and still asking for pocket money.

anyway, seen the car.. all i can say is.. first time car owners especially those without rich parents. get a good mechanic friend, shop around for a good used car. focus on your career, and suddenly in about 5-6 years you will suddenly realise you can/will be able to afford many many other cars.

Went to test drive the Iriz 1.6 premium. From the perspective of a persona driver, the power output is satisfying as the torque feels balance across the rpm however, the CVT is a huge let down, as the noise level is, hmmm. The air con isn’t cold either, but the interior is well put together. The head unit response is just about right.
Anyway, to keep thing short, avoid the CVT. NVH is okay but not that impressive. It get really loud when revved. Kuching doesn’t have the manual version for test drive so I wouldn’t know if it’s the same for manual.

But there wasn’t any manual versions available at that time. And there’s some vibrations felt when the car is in idle mode.. I would say, everything is alright, all Proton need is to improve the NVH on the Iriz and it’s a perfect car..

Having test driven the car (1.6 VVT exec auto), here is my 2 sen:

    PROS:

    1. Build Quality & Fit Finish – Dashboard, steering & most of the interior feels very good to see & touch, the best Proton has ever produced. Switches tactility is good too except for the aircon knobs which feels a bit loose & rough when twisted..

    2. Driving Dynamics – No need to elaborate. It handles even better than some bigger C-segment cars. The electric power steering is superbly tuned to be light, but remains communicative and inspires confidence when tackling sharp corners.

    3. Creature Comfort – The bucketed front seats have very good ergonomics and feel more comfortable than other Japanese competitors. The rear seat has a long base, thus providing excellent thigh support (better than the Preve, perhaps due to slightly higher seating position), but then it lacks proper side bolster to support the shoulder (e.g. Kia Rio).

    4. Safety – Driven the car at 80km/h and applied sudden emergency brake to a complete standstill, the steering doesn’t even vibrate and there’s not even slight change in direction. A proof how ESC/VDC can save lives. Bravo.

    CONS:

    1. Engine Refinement & NVH

    – Engine note is audible even when idling. At 2.5-3K rpm with moderate throttle, noise increase to 65dB. IMHO, it is quite noisy considering other B-segment cars’ standard (City/Vios/Almera). Slight vibrations & rattles are felt inside the cabin. Proton engineers need to seriously to look into this matter.

Frankly, the Iriz is such a great accomplishment by Proton considering how problematic they were in the past. Excellent in terms of build quality, driving dynamics and safety. Good in terms of acceleration, throttle response, interior & exterior design, gadgets, and ergonomics. Mediocre in terms of engine refinement and NVH. Well, so close Proton. Sooo close..

The vibration is very noticeable. Bought mine July 2014. Day 1 vibration felt… seems to come when RPM goes to 3.1-3.2k rpm. Then, there’s also this weird air-cond like noise, you know when it’s ‘sucking’ in the gas or something. But this is not the air cond making the noise. Happens around 2.5k RPM and also other specific RPMs.

But now, to make myself feel better, I just say “This is an added feature on the Iriz. Massage feature at high RPMs”… hey, what else can I do. SC cannot fix oso maaa

The car has serious faults from obviously standing outdoors for many months and there is obvious rust, damage to the paint and many more defects. Proton Edar delivered faulty goods but refuses any responsibility. Iriz buyers please be aware!
