    255,532 road accidents Jan-Sep 2021, 3,302 deaths

A total of 255,532 road accidents were reported from January to September 2021, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. Based on police statistics, of this number, 3,302 were fatal.

For the whole of 2020, 418,237 accidents were recorded, with 4,634 fatalities. “The sudden reduction in traffic deaths for 2020 compared to previous years is the result of lockdowns, reducing the amount of traffic and thereby the number of traffic fatalities,” said Dr Wee during the launch of the Chinese New Year road safety and “Ops Selamat” campaign in Putrajaya.

He added to reduction in traffic deaths due to restricted movement not only happened in Malaysia, but worldwide. “All nations around the world recorded a reduction in road fatalities, up to 20%, including Malaysia where the reduction was 25% in 2022,” Dr Wee said.

Aside from this, based on Ops Selamat 16 by police, 23,308 road accidents were recorded during the Chinese New Year holiday period in 2020. Of this, 206 accidents were reported as fatal, with 230 deaths.

“This figure of 230 road user deaths in two weeks during the festive period is worrisome. To me, this is an indication the road safety literacy level amongst road users is far short of a commendable level,” said Dr Wee. Ops Selamat is scheduled to run from Jan 28 to Feb 6, 2022.

  • 2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

For 2022 Harley-Davidson (H-D) introduces the Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST, joining the current catalogue offering, the Low Rider S. Setting the Low Rider ST apart is a taller ride height, following the trend of the California “tall bike” design style.

Done in the interest of increasing cornering clearance, the Low Rider ST mounts its saddle bags higher up at the subframe, while the rear suspension has a taller monoshock than the standard Harley-Davidson Softtail giving one degree more cornering clearance. This provides the Low Rider ST 12.7 mm more stroke and 25.4 mm more shock travel while seat height is now 19 mm taller than the standard Low Rider S’ 710 mm.

A frame mounted fairing increases wind protection for the rider, designed with the help of computational flow dynamics (CFD) to minimise airflow buffeting the rider’s helmet. The saddle bags have a capacity of 53.8 litres and are designed to be operated with one hand with the rider seated on the bike, the clamshell door using a damper to ensure smooth operation.

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

For the Low Rider S, the same monoshock is installed, giving 1.3 degrees more cornering clearance. Instead of the frame mounted fairing on the Low Rider ST, the Low Rider S gets a smaller handlebar mounted cowl fairing while the combination analog tachometer/digital speedometer instrument console has now moved from the tank to the handlebar as a single round gauge.

Front suspension is the same for both Low Riders, a 43 mm non-adjustable upside-down fork while the rear monoshock is preload-adjustable only. Twin 300 mm discs with four-piston callipers provide stopping power on the 19-inch front wheel, the rear wheel measures 16-inches, with ABS now standard fitment for the Softtail models.

Foot controls are mid-mounted with the handlebar comes with four-inch pull-back risers. Power comes from H-D’s Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-twin, displacing 1,923 cc and producing 105 hp at 5,020 rpm and 168 Nm of torque, replacing the 2021 model’s Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin (1,868 cc, 93 hp, 155 Nm) with overall wet weight claimed to be 308 kg.

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

Blacked out styling features on the 2022 Low Rider S and Low Rider ST, the V-twin wearing a Wrinkle Black finish on the powertrain, primary cover, triple clamps, top clamp, rear fender supports and tank console. Similar treatment is applied to the rest of the bike, with every possible component wearing either gloss black, satin black or jet black while the wheels are painted Matte Dark Bronze.

There are two colour options available for the Low Rider S and ST, Vivid Black and Gunship Grey. As for pricing, no word from Harley-Davidson importer Didi Resources as yet but in H-D’s home market, the Low Rider ST pricing starts at USD 21,749 (RM91,450) for the base model in Vivid Black and USD 22,199 (RM93,342) for Gunship Grey while in Malaysia, the 2021 model Low Rider S is priced at RM106,900 for Vivid Black.

After missing out most of two MotoGP seasons, multiple world champion Marc Marquez will return to action at the 2022 MotoGP Sepang Winter Test. Given the all clear after suffering a bout of diplopia (double vision), Marquez will appear at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) to put the 2022 Honda RC213CV through the paces.

This is after a successful attempt test riding the Honda RC213V-S, the road going version of the MotoGP race machine, at Portimao, Portugal, as well as a Honda CBR600RR in Aragon, France. Marquez, who has a contract racing for Repsol Honda till the end of 2024, fell off his motorcycle during the first MotoGP round in Jerez, Spain, during 2020 season opener, resulting in a broken humerus.

Returning to action in July 2020 for the Andalucía GP, Marquez withdrew from competition, declaring there was too much pain in his arm. He then missed the rest of the 2020 MotoGP season, as well as the first two races of 2021, before returning at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao, finishing seventh.

    BWM Motorrad R18 M

On stage at the Verona Motor Bike Expo in Italy are the R18 M and R18 Aurora, a pair of custom motorcycles based on the BMW Motorrad R18. The R18 M is a joint project project developed by Italian magazine LowRide and built by American Dreams of Lobardia, Italy, while the R18 Aurora is the work of custom builder Garage 221, commissioned by BMW Motorrad Rome.

Traditionally, the ‘M’ designation has been used for four-wheeled vehicles and products from BMW’s Motorsports division, recently carrying over into the two-wheeled world with the launch of the BMW Motorrad M1000RR superbike. Designed as a fun cruiser, the R18 M is the brain child of designer Oberdan Bezzi who has previously collaborated with LowRide.

Built under commission from BMW Italy, attention was paid to the chassis, suspension setup and bodywork of the standard model R18. With the R18 lightened and a different riding position, the mechanicals and electronics were left untouched, giving the R18 M a more streamlined and sportier look.

The R18 M comes with ER Exhaust Revolution shorter exhaust pipes, allowing for a greater lean angle, along with custom made tail piece, and fibreglass windshield from Elabotario. Carbon Italy supplied head covers and intake ducts for the R18 M, amongst other carbon-fibre pieces while Rizoma provided mirrors, grips, and universal indicators, the whole being topped off by paintwork from Dox Art Factory and leather seat from L R Leather.

    BMW Motorrad R18 Aurora

Stemming all the way back from the EICMA show in 2019, the R18 Aurora take inspiration from the American cruiser style which has always impressed Garage 221’s Pier Francesco Marchio. Taking the saddle from a 2005 BMW Motorrad R1200 C, supports fashioned from the turn indicators of a 1982 R100 and the rear sub-frame of a 1991 K75, the R18 Aurora combines everything with the colour code the 1983 BMW RT100.

Leo Vince supplies the exhaust pipes for the R18 Aurora with emphasis placed on the sound, made more full-bodied and captivating. Complementing the build is the R18 Aurora’s oil cooler grille, inspired by grille of BMW’s cars from the 1960s.

“It was a lot of hard work,” said Marchio, “but the result is truly stunning. The textured paintwork of the cylinder head covers, the injection housings, the central crankcase and our oil cooler grille make everything look homogeneous, creating a unique effect with the cylinder block and the bevel gear.”

Modenas customers can redeem the voucher at its participating service outlets located in Selangor and Pahang. The voucher can be used to offset the cost of repair of personal flood damaged Modenas motorcycles and customers will also enjoy a 25% on labour and replacement parts costs.

Alternatively, the voucher can be used as a down payment towards the purchase of a new Modenas motorcycle for cases where the customer’s motorcycle is declared a total loss, subject to terms and conditions. “With this small gesture, we hope that the victims can get back on their feet to regain whatever that they have lost and most importantly to continue with their livelihood to support the family,” said Roslan Roskan, chief executive officer of Modenas.

Modenas customers wishing to take advantage of the RM1,000 discount voucher can contact the Modenas toll free number at 1-800-880-181 or send a WhatsApp message to the Modenas care line at 019-570 8135.
