Asked about the possibility of breaking the 1’57” barrier at Sepang, Bastianini said, “a 57 was close, after I went along, it was very close, it was possible but I couldn’t get it.”

Saying the differences between the 2019 and 2021 Desmosedicis make it easier for him to ride, Bastianini said improvements in straight line stability have resulted in consistency and speed. “My style is aggressive in the entry to the corner and with this bike allows me to be fast in the corner,” Bastianini said.

  • 2022 MotoGP: Sepang Winter Test a template for holding international motorsports events in Malaysia

2022 MotoGP: Sepang Winter Test a template for holding international motorsports events in Malaysia

Currently ongoing this weekend of February 5 and 6, the 2022 MotoGP Winter Test will be used as a test bed for future international motorsports events in Malaysia. Sepang International Circuit (SIC) CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif said Winter Test is important as the government as well as race organisers Dorna will use this as a template for future events at SIC.

“Winter Test is the first international motorsports event at Sepang since the beginning of the pandemic. As such, the eyes of the authorities, the Health Ministry and the Home Affairs Ministry will be paying close attention to the SOPs we proposed and are implementing,” said Shafriman.

Saying that it took a lot of work to convince the authorities to allow Winter Test to proceed, Shafriman explained the gradual loosening of the standard operating procedures in line with government guidelines is necessary for the health of the national economy. “We will have to learn to live with Covid-19, in the expectation it will eventually be endemic,” said Shafriman.

2021 MotoGP World Champion Fabio Quartararo, Monster Energy Yamaha

This will have a bearing on the scheduling of the 2022 Malaysian Grand Prix, slated to happen in October of this year. “We have to wait and see but god willing, the Malaysian MotoGP will happen as scheduled,” Shafriman added.

As to whether the Malaysian Grand Prix will happen with a limited capacity crowd or be open to all will depend on the authorities, Shafriman elaborated. “Certainly, the Malaysian MotoGP was voted best for two years and the MotoGP teams love the circuit. Many are pleased to be back in Malaysia for Winter Test,” he said.

“We have seen crowds in excess of 160,000 people and it is obvious the fans are willing to come to SIC and support not just MotoGP but other motorsports events,” Shafriman said, using the unexpected crowd turning out to watch Winter Test from the main grandstand as an example.

Shafriman said SIC is also looking at external revenue streams in future with the withdrawal of the Ministry of Youth and Sports grant. “We will be holding events such as cycling, which has proven popular with the public,” Shafriman said, “and the driving centre where driving enthusiasts can upgrade and hone their skills is proceeding.”

As for motorsports talent development, the SIC MiniGP programme is still in place and will identify grassroots talent for coming years. “Our boys in the Spanish CEV are still competing, and we aim to get Damok into Moto3 next year,” said Shafriman.

At the basis of it, Shafriman expressed his gratitude to Malaysian motorsports fans for their support and patience during the past two years with the cancellation of the Malaysian MotoGP in 2020 and 2021. “It has been a difficult period for many and I am grateful Malaysian fans are still supporting SIC by coming to watch the Winter Test.”

2022 MotoGP: Monster Energy Yamaha shows colours

With incumbent world champion Fabio Quartararo and team mate Franco Morbidelli, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP is favourite for the 2022 MotoGP season. During the 2022 Winter Test at Sepang International Circuit (SIC), Yamaha unveiled the racing livery adorning the Yamaha YZR-M1.

Not much in the way of changes from the 2021 racing colours, with the YZR-M1 still decked out in the black and blue with main sponsor Monster Energy featuring prominently. What is new is the engine package along with suspension upgrades and updates.

Monster Energy Yamaha had a stellar 2021 season, despite the unfortunate incident with Maverick Vinales leading to the Spanish rider’s dismissal from the team mid-season. Vinales has now joined Aprilia MotoGP, astride the Aprilia RS-GP V4.

As for Morbidelli, coming to the Yamaha factory team after the dissolution of Petronas Sepang Racing Team (resurrected as WithU RNF Racing), a dismal 2021 season with a 17th place overall due to knee surgery sees the young Italian raring to go.

“I have always had a good feeling on the Yamaha, but this M1 is so smooth. I can‘t wait to start riding the 2022 bike now that my knee is in a better condition. I‘m very interested to see how our progress will continue,” said Morbidelli in a statement.

2022 Honda Vario 160 updated for Indonesia market – engine update, rear disc brake + ABS, new bodywork

After four years in the market, the 2022 Honda Vario has been updated and is now in the Indonesia market. This Honda scooter is now known as the Honda Vario 160 and receives a host of updates including in the engine while in Malaysia, the 2020 Honda Vario 150 retails at RM7,499.

Despite retaining the familiar Vario styling, all the body panels on the Vario 160 are new and differences are most noticeable in the front cowl. Another styling cue that left the previous generation Vario look “unfinished” has now been addressed with new fender, as well as upsized tyres measuring 100/80 in front and 120/70 at the back.

Wheel sizing remains the same at 14 inches but now comes in a new colour scheme. The Vario 160 uses LED lighting throughout while the seat unit has been restyled.

As can be surmised from the name change, the Vario 160 now comes with a larger engine capacity. From the previous 149.3 cc, the single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, EFI fed mill in the Vario 160 now displaces 156.9 cc with compression ratio taking a jump to 12:1 from 10.6:1.

This results in the Vario 160 producing a claimed 15.4 PS at 8,500 rpm and 13.8 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm, up from the outgoing Vario 150’s 13.1 PS and 13.4 Nm of torque. Another upgrade for this year’s Vario is in the braking department, with the Vario 160 now coming with a disc brake on the rear wheel, complementing the single disc in front.

However, the Indonesia market also gets the Vario 160 with combined braking system that uses a hydraulic disc in front and a mechanical disc brake at the back. Meanwhile, the Vario 160 with twin hydraulic discs comes with ABS braking as standard.

The rest of the Vario 160’s equipment specification remains the same, with a monochrome LCD instrument panel and 5.5 liters of fuel carried in the tank. Suspension is done with telescopic forks in front and monoshock in the rear while a USB charging port and keyless start is standard equipment while there are six colour choices for the Vario 160 in Indonesia.

After five seasons in MotoGP, KTM enters its sixth season for the 2022 MotoGP with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Tech3 KTM Factory Racing. Campaigning the KTM RC16, which paultan.org was privileged enough to get a close look at during its first season racing here, KTM has managed five Grand Prix victories and 12 podium appearances during its half decade racing in MotoGP.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will have Brad Binder and Miguel Oliviera in the saddle, riding the number 33 and 88 KTM RC16s, respectively. Oliviera is KTM’s most successful MotoGP rider to date with five podium spots in three MotoGP seasons, while Binder, with two MotoGP wins under his belt, is in his third season with KTM.

Speaking on his previous season, Oliviera was optimistic about his chances for 2022, saying, “Last year we had a huge step forward in four races where I scored three podiums and one win so that was quite nice. Then with the injury in the second half of the season the races became really tough: it was definitely a learning curve for me.”

Raul Fernandez (left) and Remy Gardner, Tech3 KTM Factory Racing

“I would say if I’m able to score points in every GP then at the end of the championship the result might be quite different, so we’re just looking to take the maximum potential of myself, of the bike, of the whole crew and translate that into results,” Oliviera said. Meanwhile, Binder was rather more confident of his chances next year, “I’m going in to my third season understanding what I need to do to go faster and I’m looking forward to getting the year started. I’m more ready than I’ll ever be.”

For the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing satellite team, riders Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner, both alumni of the KTM’s GP Academy and mentored by former racer Aki Ajo of Ajo Motorsport, will ride into battle on RC16s bearing race numbers 25 and 87. Gardner, son of 1987 500 cc Motorcycle World Champion Wayne Gardner, moves up to MotoGP after winning the 2021 Moto2 World Championship.

    255,532 road accidents Jan-Sep 2021, 3,302 deaths

A total of 255,532 road accidents were reported from January to September 2021, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. Based on police statistics, of this number, 3,302 were fatal.

For the whole of 2020, 418,237 accidents were recorded, with 4,634 fatalities. “The sudden reduction in traffic deaths for 2020 compared to previous years is the result of lockdowns, reducing the amount of traffic and thereby the number of traffic fatalities,” said Dr Wee during the launch of the Chinese New Year road safety and “Ops Selamat” campaign in Putrajaya.

He added to reduction in traffic deaths due to restricted movement not only happened in Malaysia, but worldwide. “All nations around the world recorded a reduction in road fatalities, up to 20%, including Malaysia where the reduction was 25% in 2022,” Dr Wee said.

    255,532 road accidents Jan-Sep 2021, 3,302 deaths

Aside from this, based on Ops Selamat 16 by police, 23,308 road accidents were recorded during the Chinese New Year holiday period in 2020. Of this, 206 accidents were reported as fatal, with 230 deaths.

“This figure of 230 road user deaths in two weeks during the festive period is worrisome. To me, this is an indication the road safety literacy level amongst road users is far short of a commendable level,” said Dr Wee. Ops Selamat is scheduled to run from Jan 28 to Feb 6, 2022.

  • 2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

For 2022 Harley-Davidson (H-D) introduces the Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST, joining the current catalogue offering, the Low Rider S. Setting the Low Rider ST apart is a taller ride height, following the trend of the California “tall bike” design style.

Done in the interest of increasing cornering clearance, the Low Rider ST mounts its saddle bags higher up at the subframe, while the rear suspension has a taller monoshock than the standard Harley-Davidson Softtail giving one degree more cornering clearance. This provides the Low Rider ST 12.7 mm more stroke and 25.4 mm more shock travel while seat height is now 19 mm taller than the standard Low Rider S’ 710 mm.

A frame mounted fairing increases wind protection for the rider, designed with the help of computational flow dynamics (CFD) to minimise airflow buffeting the rider’s helmet. The saddle bags have a capacity of 53.8 litres and are designed to be operated with one hand with the rider seated on the bike, the clamshell door using a damper to ensure smooth operation.

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

For the Low Rider S, the same monoshock is installed, giving 1.3 degrees more cornering clearance. Instead of the frame mounted fairing on the Low Rider ST, the Low Rider S gets a smaller handlebar mounted cowl fairing while the combination analog tachometer/digital speedometer instrument console has now moved from the tank to the handlebar as a single round gauge.

Front suspension is the same for both Low Riders, a 43 mm non-adjustable upside-down fork while the rear monoshock is preload-adjustable only. Twin 300 mm discs with four-piston callipers provide stopping power on the 19-inch front wheel, the rear wheel measures 16-inches, with ABS now standard fitment for the Softtail models.

Foot controls are mid-mounted with the handlebar comes with four-inch pull-back risers. Power comes from H-D’s Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-twin, displacing 1,923 cc and producing 105 hp at 5,020 rpm and 168 Nm of torque, replacing the 2021 model’s Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-twin (1,868 cc, 93 hp, 155 Nm) with overall wet weight claimed to be 308 kg.

2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S and ST revealed

Blacked out styling features on the 2022 Low Rider S and Low Rider ST, the V-twin wearing a Wrinkle Black finish on the powertrain, primary cover, triple clamps, top clamp, rear fender supports and tank console. Similar treatment is applied to the rest of the bike, with every possible component wearing either gloss black, satin black or jet black while the wheels are painted Matte Dark Bronze.

There are two colour options available for the Low Rider S and ST, Vivid Black and Gunship Grey. As for pricing, no word from Harley-Davidson importer Didi Resources as yet but in H-D’s home market, the Low Rider ST pricing starts at USD 21,749 (RM91,450) for the base model in Vivid Black and USD 22,199 (RM93,342) for Gunship Grey while in Malaysia, the 2021 model Low Rider S is priced at RM106,900 for Vivid Black.

After missing out most of two MotoGP seasons, multiple world champion Marc Marquez will return to action at the 2022 MotoGP Sepang Winter Test. Given the all clear after suffering a bout of diplopia (double vision), Marquez will appear at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) to put the 2022 Honda RC213CV through the paces.

This is after a successful attempt test riding the Honda RC213V-S, the road going version of the MotoGP race machine, at Portimao, Portugal, as well as a Honda CBR600RR in Aragon, France. Marquez, who has a contract racing for Repsol Honda till the end of 2024, fell off his motorcycle during the first MotoGP round in Jerez, Spain, during 2020 season opener, resulting in a broken humerus.

Returning to action in July 2020 for the Andalucía GP, Marquez withdrew from competition, declaring there was too much pain in his arm. He then missed the rest of the 2020 MotoGP season, as well as the first two races of 2021, before returning at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao, finishing seventh.
