EVx 2023: Double the hall space, exhibitors from 2022 – number of visitors also up to 22k from 10k last year

If 2022 was a year of gentle growth for electrification in Malaysia, then 2023 has been very much a huge leap forward, despite the year only being just over the halfway mark at this point. Activity has picked up considerably, with the influx of new electric vehicle offerings coming on to the scene having plenty to do with that resulting spike and the corresponding surge of interest in the genre.

This is best exemplified from the response to the paultan.org Electric Vehicle Expo (EVx), which was held on July 22-23 at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC). To put it simply, this year’s show easily eclipsed that managed by the inaugural outing last year.

How so? Well, EVx 2023 was more than double the size of the 2022 show, both in terms of hall space and number of exhibitors. The number of visitors to the event also doubled, from around 10,000 in 2022 to over 22,000 this year.

Of course, much of that swell in attendance was undoubtedly due to the presence of a number of fresh faces, with no less than four EVs making their first public appearance at the show. There was the Tesla Model Y, fresh off its launch in the country two days prior, as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which made its Malaysian debut the night before the event.

Also making their public debuts were the smart #1, which is set to be launched here sometime in the fourth quarter, and BYD Dolphin, which was previewed at EVx ahead of its official launch a week later.

Besides the new faces, visitors to the event managed to catch just about everything EV-related currently available in the country under one roof. Automotive brands that were present at EVx 2023 were Mercedes-Benz and smart (represented by Hap Seng Star and Hap Seng Smart), BMW and MINI (through Wheelcorp Premium), Volvo, Audi, Hyundai, BYD, GWM and Lotus.

They were joined by a host of other exhibitors, which included the likes of Petronas, Gentari, JomCharge (via EV Connection), Kineta, evhub.my, Bank Islam, Bank Muamalat, myTukar, V-Kool and Dodo Mat.

Of course, it’s only set to grow further from here, and you can expect the scene to get busier in the coming future as more brands and models head our way. We’ll be there in the thick of the action, what with EVx set to be back for its third edition in 2024. Yes, you’ll be seeing us again next year!

Well, come find out for yourself at the paultan.org EVx 2023 at the Setia City Convention Centre. Today is the last day of the show.

Launched in December 2022, we get two variants of the Atto 3, the Standard Range with a 49.92 kWh battery offering 410 km of range (NEDC, 345 km WLTP), and the Extended Range with a 60.48 kWh battery, rated for 480 km (NEDC, 420 km WLTP). The Atto 3 is built on 400V architecture and supports AC charging (Type 2) up to 7 kW as well as DC fast charging (CCS2), the latter at a max rate of either 70 kW (SR) or 80 kW (ER). Speaking of batteries, the Atto 3’s Blade Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, made in-house by BYD, is a differentiating factor compared to other EVs on the market. Check out our video review of the Atto 3 on why the LFP battery is an USP.

By the way, if you’re wondering about the Atto 3’s size, it’s larger than a Proton X50. The BYD’s interior is very unique in design and there are a couple of fascination points unseen in our market. The seats are also super comfy. EVx 2023: Lotus Eletre EV SUV at SCCC this weekend

After decades as a relatively specialist producer of lightweight sports cars, Lotus has emerged with its first SUV that is also its first fully electric vehicle, the Eletre that was launched in Malaysia in April this year.

Arriving in Malaysia in three variants, the Eletre, Eletre S and Eletre R, all three feature a dual-motor AWD powertrain and the R is the range-topper that boasts of 905 hp and 985 Nm of torque, enabling it to do 0-100 km/h in 2.95 seconds, 80-120 km/h in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h.

The Eletre is part of an exclusive club of EVs featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports fast charging at up to 350 kW DC, which brings a 10-80% charge in just minutes; the Eletre also takes AC charging up to 22 kW. All three variants use a 112 kWh battery, yielding a range of 600 km (WLTP) for the Eletre and Eletre S, and 490 km for the Eletre R.

Coming laden with technology, the Eletre range offers five drive modes, with the top Eletre R getting an additional Track mode for further adjustment of its active rear-wheel steering, adaptive dampers and active anti-roll control for greater chassis performance, and also fully opens the active front grille along with enabling launch control for access to the variant’s full performance.

Safety-wise, the Eletre gets an ADAS suite that can be updated over-the-air for future iterations, while also featuring the world’s first deployable Lidar system to support higher levels of autonomous driving in the future.

In addition to Lotus and all other automotive manufacturer brands present at EVx 2023, there are also charging solutions providers in attendance.
