Ducati shows Powerstage RR Limited Edition e-MTB

Set to debut at the German MotoGP in Sachsenring this weekend is the Ducati Powerstage RR Limited Edition electric mountain bike (e-MTB) with 230 units available for purchase. This enduro e-MTB comes with a carbon-fibre frame and features styling by renowned designer Aldo Drudi in collaboration with Centro Stile Ducati, inspired by the Desmosedici GP23 MotoGP race motorcycle.

The Powerstage RR is designed to compete in the recently introduced special stage in e-enduro racing. The e-enduro special stage, aside from the traditional technical downhill, also features a technical uphill route that tests the skills and performance of the rider.

Cable routing on the carbon-fibre frame is all internal with T-Stopper bearings at the joints. The frame itself is the result of finite element analysis, adding stiffness in the steering head and rear chain stay, with reinforced motor mount.

  • The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

Ducatisti from around Asia gathered at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) recently for the Ducati Riding Experience (DRE) Racetrack Academy. No stranger to DRE, the author was invited to the very first Asian DRE at Buriram, Thailand in 2016, and it was interesting to see how things have changed in the intervening seven years.

Cost of doing the DRE at (SIC) is based on class, with four classes available. The Intro class, priced at RM4,930, the Warm Up at RM5,913 and the Evo and Master classes at RM6,896 and RM7,930, respectively, with use of a Ducati Panigale V4S superbike for the day included while riding gear is at the rider’s own expense.

The difference between classes is somewhat self explanatory and is dependant on rider skill level. Instructors are drawn from the DRE pool and include decades of riding and racing expertise, including former world champions.

The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

For us, we were shoved at the top into Master class, supervised by none other than the head of DRE himself, Dario Marchetti. This was something of a repeat of our first DRE day in Thailand in 2016, where we were tutored by former 250 cc World Champion Manual Poggiali.

Those who are somewhat uncertain of their riding skill level, fret not, because DRE instructors will evaluate riders during the first session and adjust classes accordingly. Such was the case with our colleague in the paultan.org Bahasa Melayu section, Durrani Shahrom, who started the day in the Intro class and was rapidly bumped up to Evo.

Classes start with a briefing on the track, explaining the corners, entry and exit lines, braking markers, apexes and the such. This was, however, missing from the Master class.

The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

    NONE

At this level, it is assumed you know which way the track goes and how to actually ride a Panigale at full throttle. And no, Ducati is not kidding when they say it is a riding experience.

In Masters, you will be shown how to use the full potential of the bike, along with the best and/or fastest lines on the track (the two can sometimes be mutually exclusive.) A case in point is taking a series of two or three corners at Sepang, for example, turns six, seven and eight.

If you take the proper apex for turn six on a superbike, then the medium length run up for seven, you will promptly find yourself wide on eight. On the other hand, apexing six early and allowing for a later entry into seven, leaves you more to the right on the exit at eight, setting yourself up nicely for the uphill turn nine.

The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

This was pointed out to us by Dario, haranguing us for not showing confidence when dropping the Panigale into certain corners. We did earn praise for our very smooth riding style and correct apexing of Sepang despite the lack of body mobility on our part due to an old riding injury.

Each 15 minute track session with the DRE instructor is followed by a debrief in the pit, where mistakes are pointed out and correction made. DRE instructors are very sharp and notice little things about riders, their bike handling skills and riding position, some of which the rider may not be aware of.

Such was the case with us, when Marchetti said, “you are riding in pain but it is ok.” I asked how he knew that and he replied, “by where you place your left foot.”

The Ducati Riding Experience with Ducati Malaysia

    144

A DRE is a very physical day, with a lot expected of participants, notably a willingness to keep your mouth shut and learn. The DRE instructors are very approachable and eager to share their skills and knowledge.

For riders wanting to hone their skills, fine tune their riding or just take that first step into track riding, DRE provides the perfect environment to do so, albeit at a price. But for the price, you get instruction from properly certified instructors with the credentials and experience to back it up.

  • MyEG and Oyika to collaborate on electric scooter battery-swapping programme for a trial period

MyEG and Oyika to collaborate on electric scooter battery-swapping programme for a trial period

Last September, smart battery swapping provider Oyika announced that it was set to launch its “Battery-as-a-Service” for electric scooters in Malaysia in the near term, with rollout of its battery swapping stations to take place in early 2023.

Movement on this front looks to be coming about, with MyEG Services having announced that it has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Oyika Green Technologies (OGT) to collaborate on the use of electric scooters as well as the placement of battery swapping stations at designated locations for a trial period, The Star reports.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, MyEG said OGT, which is a wholly-owned unit of Yinson Mobility, will supply electric bikes to it for a free trial for up to 30 days. The company added that it will provide designated locations for OGT to deploy the battery swapping stations.

As its designation suggests, the Oyika battery swapping service will allow subscribers to the company’s electric scooters to swap the battery on their ride easily for seamless, continued travel. A subscriber to the plan merely has to ride up to a battery vending machine, activate the app and swap the battery for a fully-charged unit, riding off in a matter of minutes.

The Oyika developed app shows available battery swapping locations and number of available batteries within the user’s travel range and also allows the user to pre-book a battery for a specific time period. As for subscribing to the Oyika programme, users will be able to do so via single use, daily, weekly, monthly or annual plans.

  • Harley-Davidson X440 unveiled for India market

Harley-Davidson X440 unveiled for India market

More photos of the upcoming Harley-Davidson X440, first shown in a series of press photos last April. There is now a model name, X440, and the India launch is expected in July.

The new 440X is Harley-Davidson’s (H-D) attempt to address the small and entry-level motorcycle market, something it previously tried with the Street 500 and Street Rod 750. This collaboration is with Hero MotoCorp of India, previously Hero Honda, with production exceeding 100 million units in 2021.

This is despite H-D announcing its pullout from the India market in September 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, then pulling an abrupt u-turn with its partnership with Hero MotoCorp. From what is known, the X440 is designed and manufactured in India by Hero MotoCorp under license from H-D.

Harley-Davidson X440 unveiled for India market

The partnership leverages on Hero’s five manufacturing plants in Dharuhera, Gurugram, Neemrana, Haridwar and Halol, with a sixth being set up in Chitoor, Andhra Pradesh. According to Indian press, orders are being taken for the X440 at Hero MotoCorp showrooms.

No technical details of the X440 but from photos, the engine configuration is an air-cooled single, a design particularly suited to Indian roads and riders. In India, competition for the X440 will come from Royal Enfield’s Hunter 350 and Bajaj Dominar 400 as well as foreign brands like the KTM Duke 390, made in India by Bajaj, and Benelli Imperiale 400.

  • Harley-Davidson shows Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-twin, installed in CVO Street and Road Glide tourers

Harley-Davidson shows Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-twin, installed in CVO Street and Road Glide tourers

Installed in Harley-Davidson’s touring motorcycles is the 2023 Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-twin. New for the 1,977 cc Milwaukee-Eight 121 is variable valve timing (VVT), which H-D says produces 115 hp at 4,500 rpm with 189 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm.

In this iteration, VVT advances or retards camshaft timing through 40-degrees of crankshaft rotation. This gives an improvement of three to five percent in fuel economy compared to the Milwaukee Eight 117 mill.

The cylinder is also redesigned with oval intake ports for the combustion chamber with a higher compression ratio leading to increased intake air velocity and greater combustion efficiency. An improved cooling system in the exhaust valve area improves thermal comfort, especially in low-speed riding situations and hot weather.

Harley-Davidson shows Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-twin, installed in CVO Street and Road Glide tourers

A high-performance camshaft with higher lift and longer duration increases power and torque. The valve train is updated with high-capacity lifters and inner cam bearing, and valve springs with higher lift.

Shifting is improved with a new shift drum that features a redesigned neutral pocket geometry for the six-speed gearbox, making neutral easier to find. Rounding out the changes for the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-twin on H-D’s CVO models is a larger airbox and 12.5 mm larger diameter exhaust pipe from the previous 100 mm.
