2025 Porsche 911 GT3 facelift launched in Malaysia – 992.2 is faster on track, gets 4 seats, fr RM2.29mil

Nearly a full year after it was revealed to the world, the facelifted Porsche 911 GT3 has finally been launched in Malaysia. The driver-focused rear-engined sports car, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, enters the 992.2 generation bearing no additional power but a significant fine-tuning, plus the addition of several options hitherto reserved for other models in the lineup.

First, the price – the new 911 GT3 comes directly from Zuffenhausen costing a cool RM2,290,000 nett, inclusive of duties but excluding options and on-the-road costs. Launched alongside the standard winged model for the first time is the subtler Touring, which is supposedly a no-cost option but exacts a nominal RM2,018 premium here due to ISOFIX front child seat anchors fitted as standard.

All that cash buys you a car that, to an untrained eye, is hardly changed from the highly-acclaimed 992, but that would be a disservice to the amount of reengineering that’s been carried out under the skin. Let’s start with the engine, which has been substantially revised to counter the two particulate filters and four catalytic converters – required under stricter European emissions regulations – suffocating it.

The sonorous high-revving 4.0 litre naturally-aspirated flat-six, still spinning to a dizzying 9,000 rpm, receives hotter cams from the track-spec GT3 RS, along with flow-optimised individual throttle bodies and redesigned oil coolers – all to keep power at the same 510 PS as before. Peak torque, meanwhile, has actually dropped for the first time on a GT3 to 450 Nm, still all sent to the rear.

To make up for this deficit, the 992.2 gets an eight per cent shorter final drive ratio for both the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission and the no-cost six-speed GT manual. Zero to 100 km/h is again identical to the old car – 3.4 seconds for the PDK, 3.9 seconds for the manual – although the shorter gearing means the top speed is a trite lower at 311 km/h (313 km/h with the row-your-own shifter).

While Porsche hasn’t exactly moved the needle in terms of straight-line performance, a lot of work has taken place to make sure the GT3 is even more exhilarating in the corners. Like the latest ground-effect Formula 1 cars, the newest model employs anti-dive geometry – lifted from the RS – on the GT3-specific front double wishbone suspension to maintain downforce balance even under heavy braking.

Also derived from the RS are teardrop-shaped front trailing arms to increase front downforce and improve brake cooling. The dampers, on the other hand, have been retuned to provide a modicum of extra ride comfort to address the one bugbear of the current model, while the steering has been made to respond “more calmly from the centre position without losing any of its directness,” according to rally legend Walter Röhrl.

The tweaks were put to the test by former Daytona winner Jörg Bergmeister, who set the manual transmission track record at the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 6 minutes 56.294 seconds. That is over 9.5 seconds faster than the “significantly more powerful” previous record holder and beats even the car’s PDK-equipped predecessor by 3.633 seconds.

Bergmeister, who was on hand for the Malaysian launch at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit today, told us that the a PDK-specified example would have only been around 1.5 seconds faster, due to it being heavier than the stick.

2025 Porsche 911 GT3 facelift launched in Malaysia – 992.2 is faster on track, gets 4 seats, fr RM2.29mil

“On the track, the new 911 GT3 enables even better control because it holds even steadier and handles better on bumps and when driving over kerbs thanks to the optimised damper tuning,” he said. “The anti-dive system noticeably reduces the pitching movement when braking. As a result, the balance of the car remains significantly more consistent under all conditions.”

The lap record was set using the standard GT3 with the Weissach package, which is being made available for the first time on a non-RS model. Exclusive to the winged version, it includes a carbon fibre roof, front bumper corners, rear wing endplates, door mirror caps and A-pillar triangle, as well as the rear anti-roll bar, coupling rods and shear panel.

You also get additional leather and Race-Tex microfibre trim (including the upper dashboard for the first time to reduce glare), along with carbon door handles and storage nets. Speccing this sure-to-be-desirable option is not cheap, costing a heady RM203,447 (RM254,739 with the carbon rear roll cage), although the Clubsport track pack that throws on a steel cage, a six-point driver’s harness and a lightweight fire extinguisher is another no-cost option.

    Touring package shown

The wingless Touring is instead offered with the Leichtbau (German for “lightweight”) package that throw on the carbon roof (here painted in body colour) and rear suspension components from the Weissach pack, along with lightweight door panels and a manual short shifter from the limited-run S/T. Ticking this box will cost you even more money, coming in at RM381,182.

Beyond the mechanical changes, the GT3 receives the redesigned headlights and wider taillights from elsewhere in the 992.2 lineup, the former integrating the previously-separate indicators and position lights. This cleans up the design of the front bumper and enables the air intake – which now dispenses of the body-coloured surround hitherto exclusive to the Touring model – to be made wider.

At the back, the rear diffuser – still housing dual central tailpipes – and rear deck have been redesigned, while the larger rear vents necessitated the repositioning of the fog lights. On the “regular” GT3, the endplates have been slightly re-profiled, while the new forged aluminium alloy wheels (measuring 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear) are over 1.5 kg lighter than the previous rollers.

2025 Porsche 911 GT3 facelift launched in Malaysia – 992.2 is faster on track, gets 4 seats, fr RM2.29mil

On the options list (standard on the Leichtbau pack, hence the extra cost) are magnesium wheels that save a further nine kilograms. This, together with the 40 Ah lithium-ion battery that shaves four kilograms on top of that, means that the GT3 weighs just 1,420 kg in its lightest configuration – barely two kilos heavier than the outgoing model despite the additional emissions control equipment. The weight-to-power ratio is just 2.8 kg per PS as a result.

Inside, the GT3 again receives the upgrades from the greater 992.2 range, including the 12.6-inch fully-digital instrument display. This jettisons the analogue central rev counter but adds a rotatable digital version that places the redline at 12 o’clock, plus a reduced “Track Screen” mode.

The revised 10.9-inch Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment touchscreen also gains a unique-to-GT3 driver assist shortcut that allows drivers to quickly turn off the default-on nannies. For the first time, the Touring can be had with four seats, in response to customer demand.

In Malaysia, the rear pews are fitted as standard, throwing on the aforementioned ISOFIX mounts. Access to the rear is freed up by the optional lightweight sports bucket seats, which can now fold and feature removable headrests, making helmet-wearing drivers more comfortable. As with all the options you’ve already seen, these pews costs a pretty penny at RM70,324 (yeowch).

The revamp was summed up by GT boss Andreas Preuninger, who said: “The new 911 GT3 has become even more exhilarating and individual. We dug into a wealth of details and gave it many features that our customers wanted. This allows the GT3 to be adapted even more specifically to the purpose or preferences of the driver.”

  • BYD Seal 6 EV launched in Malaysia – more affordable C-seg sedan, over 400 km range, priced from RM100k

BYD Seal 6 EV launched in Malaysia – more affordable C-seg sedan, over 400 km range, priced from RM100k

Right on cue, the BYD Seal 6 EV has made its official debut in Malaysia, with BYD Sime Motors formally introducing the model earlier this morning. The Seal 6 EV – which is the brand’s seventh new model to be introduced here in two years – slots into BYD’s range here as its second sedan-based offering, sitting below the Seal (which was launched here in its updated form last month) in the local line-up.

Before we get to the details about the car, let’s get its identity out of the way. While it wears a Seal moniker and a 6 suffix, the car is not the Ocean series Seal 06, of which the EV version of the type was launched in the domestic market a few months ago, but the Dynasty series Qin L EV that was introduced in China in March, renamed to the Seal 6 EV for this market.

Its arrival here may be a surprise, but as mentioned previously, the Qin L EV has been hiding in plain sight in ASEAN since early this year. Back in March, a camouflaged prototype of the sedan was actually spotted next to an Atto 2 ahead of the SUV’s debut in the Kingdom, but no one thought much of it at that point.

BYD Seal 6 EV launched in Malaysia – more affordable C-seg sedan, over 400 km range, priced from RM100k

Two variants of the Seal 6 are available for Malaysia, which is the first export market for the renamed Qin L EV, and they are the Dynamic and Premium. They are priced as follows:

    • BYD Seal 6 Dynamic – RM100,000
    • BYD Seal 6 Premium – RM115,800

This makes the Seal 6 EV significantly cheaper than the Seal, which is priced at RM171,800 for the Premium (Extended Range) and RM191,800 for the Performance (AWD).

    Exterior

Size-wise, the Seal 6 – which is underpinned by the automaker’s e-platform 3.0 – measures in at 4,720 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,495 mm tall, with a 2,820 mm-long wheelbase. In terms of dimensions, the Seal 6 is very much related to the Seal 06, with its exterior measurements mirroring the Ocean series model, with the only difference being in width, with the 06 being wider by 20 mm.

BYD Seal 6 EV launched in Malaysia – more affordable C-seg sedan, over 400 km range, priced from RM100k

Beyond the price, comparisons to the Seal are inevitable, and from an exterior viewpoint the Seal 6 is slightly shorter and narrower, but taller than the Seal, which measures in at 4,800 mm long, 1,875 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall, with a 2,920 mm-long wheelbase.

It remains a sizeable car, one the company touts as the largest C-segment sedan offering available in this market, independent of powertrain type. This is reflected in it being longer, wider and taller than the likes of the Proton S70, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla Altis and Mazda 3.

Elsewhere, other relevant numbers are a 165 mm ground clearance and a kerb weight of 1,780 kg for the Dynamic and 1,800 kg for the Premium, the latter likely from the inclusion of a panoramic sunroof for the variant. Technical highlights mentioned at a presentation ahead of the launch includes a high torsional rigidity of 31,167 Nm for the car’s cell-to-body chassis.

    Design and equipment

Styling-wise, its Dynasty series origin means styling is closer to the Atto 2 and Atto 3 rather than the Seal and Sealion 7, with both the front and rear ends pitched differently. For one, the front end’s full-width silver bar joining the slim LED headlights and bumper design give it a more traditional sedan look.

The Qin nameplate has been around since 2008, and since then has sold over 2.4 million models as of September this year, including PHEV models. As far as form to eye goes, the Seal is inherently more rakish and sporty, but the Seal 06’s suit, despite its higher bonnet line, remains sharp with a dynamic enough waistline and will appeal to shoppers looking for a stylish, if conventionally presented, sedan.

Both the Dynamic and Premium look identical at a glance, but there are exterior cues that differentiate the Premium visually. For one, the Dynamic doesn’t have the front full width LEDs of the Premium. Then, there’s the aforementioned panoramic sliding sunroof, which has a front portion that can be opened instead of the Seal’s fixed glass roof. It also has a powered sunshade, as per the updated Seal.

Also, the Premium rides on 18-inch wheels, which are wrapped with 225/50 profile Westlake rubber, while the Dynamic is shod with 17-inch alloy rollers, fitted with 225/55 series tyres. Incidentally, the Seal 6 EV comes with normal windows, not double-glazed units as per the Seal.

Three exterior colours are available for the Seal 6, these being Arctic White, Harbour Grey and Misty Blue, with the Dynamic getting the first two shades, and the Premium the full set of three.

    Powertrain, performance, battery and charging

The two Seal 6 variants are rear-wheel drive, which the company says helps to provide the car with a more premium sporty driving feel. The single electric motor is an 8-in-1 unit, integrating the motor, reducer, high-voltage controller, DC-DC converter, on-board charger, electrical distribution unit, vehicle control unit and thermal management system, and can operate at up a maximum 16,000 rpm.

Motor outputs – and performance figures – are different for both variants, and they are:

    • Dynamic – 129 PS (127 hp, or 95 kW) and 220 Nm; 0-100 km/h in 10.9 seconds, 160 km/h top speed
    • Premium – 218 PS (215 hp, or 160 kW) and 330 Nm; 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, 180 km/h top speed

Aside from this, the battery size is identical, with both variants for Malaysia equipped with a 56.64 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is the larger unit available for the car in its domestic market. In terms of operating range, it’s rather interesting, as both the Dynamic and Premium quote the same 485 km NEDC-rated range (about 410 km WLTP), despite their different outputs.

In any case, the battery can be juiced up at a maximum DC rate of 100 kW, in which it takes 23 minutes to get the unit from a 30% to 80% state-of-charge. As for Type 2 AC charging, the maximum rate is 6.67 kW, although there is vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at up to 3.7 kW.

Mention was made of the Seal 6’s 12V starter battery being a LFP unit – at 2.2 kg, it’s lighter than a conventional sealed lead-acid battery, but the real benefit is its higher charge/discharge efficiency and, more importantly, its operational longevity, providing up to 3,000 cycles before it needs replacing.

The Seal 6 has a dual ball-joint MacPherson front and rear multi-link suspension setup, which the automakers says provides better handling and smoother, more stable cornering on top of better ride comfort. Notably, in a first for BYD in Malaysia, the dampers have been specifically tuned for local roads, aimed at offering a firmer ride and providing the car with sportier handling.

    Interior and equipment

In line with its Dynasty theme, the Seal 6 features a cabin with a cleaner, less organic interior design, the dashboard being dominated by a flat, full-width gloss black panel. It also ditches the Seal 06 EV’s discrete gear selector in favour of the Atto 2’s steering column-mounted stalk. Also taken from the Atto 2 is the three-spoke steering wheel design. Only one colour scheme is available for the interior, and this is in black and grey.

Standard fit items include an 8.8-inch digital instrument display and a DiLink 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Unlike the domestic model (which also offers a larger 15.6-inch option), the central screen does not rotate, and as such presents everything only in landscape – or horizontal – mode. The central console has a dual space to store smartphones, with one slot having a 15 watt Qi wireless charger, which is only available on the Premium.

The infotainment system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and there’s also a voice assistance feature, supporting commands made in English, Malay, Cantonese and Mandarin. Also provided with the car is an internet connection package, consisting of 2GB of data per month for a period of two years. Elsewhere, access to the car can be accomplished through a physical NFC key card, a digital NFC/Bluetooth key or via the BYD digital app.

The seating element was also highlighted, with mention of the high level of comfort provided by the seats, which are finished in faux eco-leather. The front units come with an increased level of lateral support, and attention has also been paid to the rear pews as well, with the 60:40 split rear seat backs having a more slanted design to improve ergonomics and comfort for occupants.

There are some differences in equipment specifications between the variants. For one, the front seats on the Dynamic are six-way power adjustable for the driver and manual for the front passenger, the Premium comes with eight-way driver and four-way passenger powered units as well as ventilation for both units.

Additionally, the audio system on the Dynamic consists of a six-speaker set-up, while the Premium ups this to eight speakers. There’s also a sunglasses holder, LED front door lights, front footwell lighting and cabin ambient lighting, which is not available for the Dynamic. As for cargo space, the Seal 6 has a 460 litre boot and a 65 litre frunk, which is deep enough to fit a cabin-sized luggage.

Safety, driving assistance equipment and warranties

The Seal 6 comes equipped with six airbags (front, front side and front/rear side curtain), front parking sensors, a 360-degree view monitor and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

As for its ADAS suite, it’s not a very big set, with available items being automatic emergency braking (AEB), stop/go adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and front collision warning, The Seal 6 is also equipped with a brake override system and intelligent high beam control.

As part of the model’s introduction, the company is offering an exclusive launch package worth RM6,288 for the first 800 customers. For those with a landed property, this consists of a free wall charger worth RM3,288 and a launch rebate of RM3,000.

Meanwhile, those residing in a high-rise property will get a Sime Platinum 4+ by Power Up 12-month doorstep charging programme package worth RM5,000. This consists of four times mobile doorstep charging/two car washes per month and two free EV rescue charging service per year, along with a launch rebate of RM1,000.

Buyers will also receive a V2L adapter and a Type 2 three-pin plug charging cable. As for warranties, the BYD Seal 6 EV comes with a six-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/100,000 km drive unit warranty, while the Blade battery unit is covered by an eight-year/160,000 km warranty.

The BYD Seal 6 EV is a sedan built on the same e-Platform 3.0 Evo as the Sealion 7 and is powered by a single rear motor. In China, the car is offered in three variants, with the base model producing 150 PS (110 kW) and 220 Nm of torque and delivering a CLTC-rated range of 470 km thanks to a 46.08 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The other two variants receive a more powerful motor pushing out 218 PS (160 kW) and 330 Nm, as well as a larger 56.64 kWh battery providing a CLTC range of 545 km (circa 430 km WLTP). The smaller pack can DC fast charge at up to 84 kW, the larger unit at up to 103 kW; both can be topped up from 30 to 80% in 24 minutes. AC power is 7 kW, and both variants also feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at up to 6 kW.

Measuring 4,720 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,495 mm tall, the Seal 6 EV is just 80 mm shorter than the regular Seal and is actually five millimetres wider and 35 mm taller, although its 2,820 mm wheelbase is a full 100 mm shorter. The rear motor frees up space at the front for a storage area.

This frees up more space on the centre console for storage that includes dual smartphone holders (including one 50-watt Qi wireless charger), dual cupholders and an optional fridge under the front armrest. Also taken from the Atto 2 is the three-spoke steering wheel design.

The Seal 6 EV should be cheaper than the full-fat Seal (which starts at RM171,800), given its lower positioning and power outputs. However, it’s not much smaller and has nearly the same amount of tech. How much do you think the BYD Seal 6 EV will be priced at?

BYD Seal 6 EV Malaysia launch Sept 26 – first market outside China, 218 PS, 330 Nm, 545 km CLTC range

Less than a week after showing the first proper teaser of the Seal 6 EV, BYD has confirmed that the electric sedan will be launched in Malaysia on September 26. As we had previously guessed, this will be the first global market for the car, called the Qin L EV in China.

Marginally smaller (and presumably cheaper) than the full-fledged Seal, the Seal 6 EV is built on the same e-Platform 3.0 Evo as the Sealion 7 and is powered by a single rear motor. In China, the car is offered in three variants, with the base model producing 150 PS (110 kW) and 220 Nm of torque and delivering a CLTC-rated range of 470 km thanks to a 46.08 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery; expect a more realistic WLTP figure of around 380 km.

Unfortunately, AC charging power is limited to just 7 kW, although both variants do also feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at up to 6 kW.

BYD Seal 6 EV Malaysia launch Sept 26 – first market outside China, 218 PS, 330 Nm, 545 km CLTC range

As per that Seal, the rear motor frees up space at the front for a separate boot.

The Seal 6 EV is also less overtly sporty than the Seal in terms of design – not a surprise considering the latter’s performance. At the front, you’ll find slim headlights joined together by a silver bar – a telltale sign that this car originates from the Dynasty series instead of the Ocean range like the Seal, as the same cue is also on the Atto 2 and Atto 3 (called the Yuan Up and Yuan Plus in China respectively).

Down below, the bumper has a distinct X shape to it that’s mirrored in the rear, while the side features the Seal’s six-window glasshouse and sculpted sills with black trim running across. Finishing off the look are full-width taillights with the “infinity” graphic similar to the Atto 2, as well as an illuminated red BYD badge.

Inside, the Seal 6 EV gets a cleaner, less organic design than other models in the Ocean series, the dashboard being dominated by a flat, full-width gloss black panel. It also ditches the Seal’s discrete gear selector in favour of the Atto 2’s steering column-mounted stalk.

This frees up more space on the centre console for storage that includes dual smartphone holders (including one 50-watt Qi wireless charger), dual cupholders and an optional fridge under the front armrest. Also taken from the Atto 2 is the more sober three-spoke steering wheel design.

BYD Seal 6 EV Malaysia launch Sept 26 – first market outside China, 218 PS, 330 Nm, 545 km CLTC range

As is usual for the latest BYD models, the Qin L EV comes with the brand’s ubiquitous screens, including an 8.8-inch digital instrument display and a 12.8- or 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment touchscreen. Other features include six- or eight-speaker sound systems, power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation and driver’s side memory, a panoramic glass roof with powered sunshade and optional DiSus-C adaptive dampers (only recently added to the Seal).

One more variable concerns the price. The Seal 6 EV should be cheaper than the full-fat Seal (which starts at RM171,800), given its lower positioning and power outputs. However, it’s not much smaller and has nearly the same amount of tech, so we can’t imagine it costing much less than RM150,000. Then again, BYD is known to price its lower-end cars aggressively, so who knows?

BYD Seal 6 EV teased for Malaysia – renamed Qin L EV, RWD, up to 218 PS and 545 km CLTC range

Having teased its next model for the better part of a week now, BYD Malaysia has released the first image of the car – the taillights of what appears to be a small sedan. At first glance, this looks to be the Seal 06 EV that was rumoured previously, but a few details are amiss.

UPDATE: BYD Malaysia has confirmed the launch of the Seal 6 EV will take place on September 26, 2025.

For one, instead of the lamps being sleek quad L-shaped items, we instead have more angular trapezoidal graphics, similar to the “infinity” lights on the new Atto 2. You can also just about make out the pronounced X-shaped design for the rear bumper, taking the place of a large diffuser on the Seal 06 EV. There’s only one BYD electric sedan that has these lights and bumper, and it’s the Qin L EV launched in China in March.

Surprised? Us too. After all, BYD Malaysia has already announced that the four-door will have a “6” in the name, suggesting that it will carry the Seal 6 EV name – following in the footsteps of the Seal 5 (called Destroyer in China) and Seal 6 (née Seal 06) DM-i plug-in hybrids already offered in other markets. That would lead credence to the Seal 06 EV getting the export treatment, rather than the Qin L EV which is part of the Dynasty (instead of Ocean) range. Confusing, isn’t it?

BYD Seal 6 EV teased for Malaysia – renamed Qin L EV, RWD, up to 218 PS and 545 km CLTC range

Then again, the Qin L EV has been hiding in plain sight in ASEAN for a while now. Cast your mind back to March, when the Atto 2 was spied in Thailand ahead of its launch – a camouflaged prototype of the sedan was actually spotted next to the entry-level SUV, but we didn’t think much of it at the time. By the way, Malaysia looks set to be the first export market for the Qin L EV, as it has not been shown outside China yet.

Despite the different names and unique designs, however, the Qin L EV and the Seal 06 EV are practically identical underneath. Both are built on the same e-Platform 3.0 Evo and are powered by a single rear motor producing 150 PS (110 kW) and 220 Nm of torque. A 46.08 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivers a range of 470 km on China’s very lenient CLTC cycle; expect a WLTP figure of around 380 km.

The long range variant adds a more powerful motor pushing out 218 PS (160 kW) and 330 Nm, as well as a larger 56.64 kWh battery providing a CLTC range of 545 km (circa 430 km WLTP). The smaller pack can DC fast charge at up to 84 kW, the larger unit at up to 103 kW; both can be topped up from 30 to 80% in 24 minutes. Unfortunately, AC charging power is limited to just 7 kW, although both variants do also feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at up to 6 kW.

BYD Seal 6 EV teased for Malaysia – renamed Qin L EV, RWD, up to 218 PS and 545 km CLTC range

Not only are the Qin L EV and Seal 06 EV indistinguishable under the skin, but even their dimensions are the same. Both measure 4,720 mm long, 1,880 mm wide and 1,495 mm tall and have a wheelbase spanning 2,820 mm – just 80 mm shorter than the full-sized Seal. As per that Seal, the rear motor frees up space at the front for a separate boot.

Aside from the taillights and rear bumper design (something that’s mirrored at the front), the Qin L EV is differentiated visually through a full-width silver bar joining the slim LED headlights, less sculpted flanks with a black strip and full glass rear quarter windows rather than the Seal 06 EV’s odd half body-coloured items.

Befitting its status as a Dynasty model, the Qin L EV gets a cleaner, less organic interior design, the dashboard being dominated by a flat, full-width gloss black panel. It also ditches the Seal 06 EV’s discrete gear selector in favour of the Atto 2’s steering column-mounted stalk.

BYD Seal 6 EV teased for Malaysia – renamed Qin L EV, RWD, up to 218 PS and 545 km CLTC range

This frees up more space on the centre console for storage that includes dual smartphone holders (including one 50-watt Qi wireless charger), dual cupholders and an optional fridge under the front armrest. Also taken from the Atto 2 is the more sober three-spoke steering wheel design.

The Qin L EV…sorry, the Seal 6 EV should be cheaper than the full-fat Seal (which starts at RM171,800), given its lower positioning and power outputs. However, it’s not much smaller and has nearly the same amount of tech, so we can’t imagine it costing much less than RM150,000. Then again, BYD is known to price its lower-end cars aggressively, so who knows?

  • BYD Seal updated in Malaysia – new wheels, adaptive dampers, powered shade for sunroof, fr. RM171,800

BYD Seal updated in Malaysia – new wheels, adaptive dampers, powered shade for sunroof, fr. RM171,800

As indicated earlier this week, the 2025 BYD Seal is now officially on sale in Malaysia, with Sime Darby Beyond Auto taking the wraps off the refreshed EV earlier this afternoon. The updated Seal takes over from the initial version, which made its local debut in February 2024.

As it was when it was introduced here last year, the updated 2025 Seal arrives in two guises, as an extended range Premium and an all-wheel drive Performance. While the base Dynamic version was introduced later that year, the variant has been dropped from the new Seal line up because customers have preferred the higher-spec models with the pre-update.

Pricing of the updated 2025 Seal variants are:

    • 2025 BYD Seal Premium (Extended Range) – RM171,800
    • 2025 BYD Seal Performance (AWD) – RM191,800

This makes the updated Seal RM8,000 cheaper than before – when it was launched, the Seal Premium was priced at RM179,800, while the Performance went for RM199,800.

BYD Seal updated in Malaysia – new wheels, adaptive dampers, powered shade for sunroof, fr. RM171,800

The update doesn’t bring about many changes, with the exterior skin of the four-door coupe-styled sedan retaining all the visual features and lines as before. The local car differs from the China version, which comes with a roof-mounted Lidar sensor and red badging.

It does however bring about a new 19-inch wheel design, again with 235/45 profile rubbers. To complement the new rollers, the Performance gets coloured front brake calipers, with the stoppers finished in red.

Dimensions and associated elements, save a minor one, are likewise unchanged. The updated Seal, which continues to sit on the automaker’s e-platform 3.0, measures in at 4,800 mm long, 1,875 mm wide and 1,460 mm tall, with a 2,920 mm-long wheelbase. External elements include LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights as well as retractable door handles and a panoramic sunroof.

Kerb weight remains at 2,055 kg for the Premium and 2,185 kg for the Performance, as well as the 400 litres of boot space on offer, with the aforementioned minor change being that for the front storage compartment, the frunk volume being increased to 53 litres from the 50 litres available previously.

The only mechanical change with the 2025 Seal is a revision to the suspension on both variants, with the Performance moving up from its previous Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) system to an adaptive DiSus-C continuous damping control system, the latter similar in scope to the one found on the Denza D9. The Premium, meanwhile, now gets the FSD suspension as an upgrade.

Otherwise, it’s all par for the course. The electric powertrains have been carried over unchanged for the 2025 model year car. The Premium features a single-motor driving the rear wheels, with 308 hp (313 PS or 230 kW) and 360 Nm on tap.

The all-wheel drive Performance adds on a 215 hp (218 PS, or 160 kW) and 310 Nm front motor, and together with the 308 hp/360 Nm rear unit offers a total output of 523 hp (530 PS or 390 kW) and 670 Nm. Acceleration figures are also the same as before, with the single-motor Premium managing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds, while the dual-motor Performance does the same run in 3.8 seconds.

An 82.5 kWh LFP Blade battery continues to provide the both Seal variants the necessary juice, and this provides the Premium with up to 570 km of WLTP-rated range (650 km on NEDC) and 520 km of WLTP-rated travel (580 km, NEDC) on the Performance.

No change in charging aspects, with the maximum DC rate continuing to be 150 kW. Although the company now lists a slightly faster time of 32 minutes to get the battery from a 30 to 80% state of charge (SoC). Previously, it took 37 minutes, but it is worth noting that the SoC rate quoted then was from 10 to 80%.

The maximum AC rate is also unchanged at 7 kW, and so going the AC Type 2 charging route will still take 15.2 hours to get the pack from a zero to 100% SoC. As it was, the Seal comes with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, and comes supplied with a V2L discharge adapter.

Inside, the update doesn’t alter anything visually, and so the cabin presentation is identical to that seen previously, save three new things, two of which are physical. These are an powered sunshade for the panoramic sunroof and a sunglasses holder. The third new bit is that a mobile phone Bluetooth key has been added alongside the existing NFC key card for access to the car.

Aside from that, everything is as from that seen on the earlier Seal, and these include leather upholstery, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen unit – with the usual switchable landscape/portrait orientation – and a 10.25 digital instrument panel as well as a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

BYD Seal updated in Malaysia – new wheels, adaptive dampers, powered shade for sunroof, fr. RM171,800

Elsewhere, you’ll find ventilated/heated driver/passenger powered seats (eight-way powered adjustable for driver, six-way powered for front passenger), dual-zone air-conditioning, a PM2.5 air filtration system, keyless entry/start and a head-up display.

There are also two wireless mobile device chargers, four USB ports (one Type-C and one Type-A at both front and rear) and fully wireless Apple CarPlay/wireless Android Auto connectivity (the Seal originally came with wired Apple CarPlay, but this was updated to wireless via an OTA update).

Safety and driver assistance kit includes nine airbags (front, front/rear side, front/rear side curtain and far-side driver) as well as the ADAS suite seen previously, with adaptive cruise control, AEB, lane departure warning and prevention, lane keeping assist, front/rear cross-traffic alert and brake as well as high beam assist and a high-resolution 360-degree camera in that kitbag.

Finally, exterior colours, and again four are available for the 2025 Seal, with three of these carried over from before – Cosmos Black, Aurora White and Atlantis Grey, with Shark Grey the new shade, replacing Arctic Blue. This four-colour palette is identical to that for the Sealion 7.

As it was before, the 2025 BYD Seal comes with a six-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty and an eight-year/150,000 km drive unit warranty.

To mark the launch of the updated Seal, it was also announced that the first 300 customers of the car will enjoy a launch promotion package worth up to RM10,888, which includes a wall charger, service package and special launch rebate.

  • BYD Malaysia confirms plans for new CKD plant in Tg Malim – production to start in second half of 2026

BYD Malaysia confirms plans for new CKD plant in Tg Malim – production to start in second half of 2026

BYD Malaysia has officially confirmed plans to set up a local assembly (CKD) plant located in Tanjong Malim, Perak. Occupying an area of 600,000 square metres, the new facility (100% invested by BYD) is expected to begin vehicle production in the second half of 2026, although the company is not mentioning what model will be the first to roll off the line for now.

UPDATE: KLK Land has issued a press release that revealed BYD Malaysia’s CKD plant will be built at KLK TechPark. Additionally, the Perak state government has also revealed timelines for the plant, and this post has been updated with the new information.

At present, BYD sells six models in Malaysia, all of them fully electric and imported from China. With the ongoing government incentives for EVs, these CBU models are currently exempted from import duty and excise duty, although they won’t be for long as the exemption only lasts until December 31, 2025.

BYD’s CKD plant in Malaysia will be built at KLK Land, a 1,500-acre integrated industrial hub envision as a hub for advanced manufacturing and green technology. BYD is the anchor tenant of the development’s first phase and will take up 150 acres.

BYD Malaysia confirms plans for new CKD plant in Tg Malim – production to start in second half of 2026

Separately, Perak tourism, industry, investment and corridor development committee chairman, Loh Sze Yee, said that land approval had been initiated since last May, with preliminary work starting in July, the Malay Mail reports. He added that construction of the factory is expected to commence at the end of August, with the launch ceremony to be officiated by menteri besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad on September 4.

With a local CKD plant, BYD will be able to benefit from incentives applied to CKD EVs, which are exempt from excise duty and sales tax until December 31, 2027. This also opens up the possibility of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models being introduced here, which could get incentives under the proposed New Customised Incentive Mechanism (NCM).

“Malaysia has always been one of BYD’s most important markets in Southeast Asia, and today’s dual announcement of CKD and the new BYD Seal marks a new chapter in our journey here. With the strong support of Sime Motors, we are confident in deepening our roots in Malaysia and bringing world-class EV technology closer to local customers,” said Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia Pacific auto sales division.

“This commitment is not only about delivering innovative products, but also about investing in the future of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem – from local assembly, to talent development, and electric mobility. Together, we look forward to accelerating Malaysia’s transition towards a greener and smarter transportation future, with BYD standing as a long-term partner to the nation,” he added.

BYD Malaysia confirms plans for new CKD plant in Tg Malim – production to start in second half of 2026

“Today’s launch builds on the success of the BYD Seal, which was Malaysia’s best-selling electric sedan in 2024. With the updated model, we are confident it will continue to attract a wide range of Malaysian customers with its enhanced features. Together with the CKD production plan, this further reinforces our position as the number one BEV brand in Malaysia,” commented Jeffrey Gan, Sime Motors managing director for Southeast Asia.

With this announcement, BYD is poised to join a number of brands that assemble EVs in Malaysia, including Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Chery. Meanwhile, other brands that have expressed or are currently in the midst of carrying out plans to locally assemble EVs here include Proton, Leapmotor, TQ Wuling and Volkswagen.

Despite Tanjong Malim being synonymous with Proton – the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) lists the local carmaker as the only one with a base in the town currently – the new BYD CKD plant will be built on a separate piece of land, unrelated to DRB-Hicom’s Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) project.

  • Sime Motors Power Up charging for BYD Atto 2; Allianz offers EV Ranger, RoboRanger rescue service

Sime Motors Power Up charging for BYD Atto 2; Allianz offers EV Ranger, RoboRanger rescue service

As battery-electric vehicles continue to gain market share, demand for user support will also increase. One such type of service is EV mobile charging and rescue recharge.

For buyers of the recently-launched BYD Atto 2, Sime Motors has partnered with Power Up Malaysia to support vehicle charging for owners of the electric crossover.

This comes as part of the 12-month Sime Platinum 4+ by Power Up subscription programme which offers mobile vehicle charging up to four times a month, vehicle hand-wash, vacuum and tyre shine services up to twice a month, and free EV rescue service up to twice a year for selected areas.

Photographed here with a single-cab Ford Ranger as its base, the Power Up mobile charging/rescue vehicle is equipped with a 120 kWh battery, and this is dispensed at up to 120 kW DC. As part of the 12-month Sime Platinum 4+ by Power Up subscription, each of the four mobile charging sessions a month will recharge the customer vehicle to 80% SoC.

The first stage of deployment of Power Up mobile charging and rescue services is offered in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Penang, with three units to serve across these areas. This is to be grown to four units for Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, and two units for Penang by end of the year.

The service will cover all of Klang Valley and Penang from January 2026, while the southern region will see the inclusion of Johor Bahru by the first quarter of 2026, according Power Up personnel.

Rescuing an electric vehicle that has insufficient battery charge is a procedure that is more involved than refuelling a petrol or diesel-powered vehicle that has run out. To that end, Allianz has a fleet of EV rescue vehicles, also shown at the Malaysian market launch of the BYD Atto 2.

Among the more conventional vehicles in the fleet is a rather curious-looking contraption, the RoboRanger. This is a remote-driven robotic cart that serves the EV rescue recharge role, and its form makes it applicable in confined spaces such as car park buildings that cannot be accessed by a conventional flatbed truck.

It is on a flatbed truck that the RoboRanger rescue cart arrives on, as it is not a road-legal vehicle, and it is then remotely driven on the car park grounds to the stricken EV in need of a charge to be mobile again.

The RoboRanger will typically offer 10 kWh of charge at 80 kW DC to get the EV to a charging point, or slightly more than 10 kWh if the EV owners requires a bit more charge to get to their next stop, according to Allianz Malaysia.

At present, there is one unit of the RoboRanger in service in the Klang Valley. The make and country of origin of the RoboRanger is undisclosed; Allianz Malaysia directly purchased the unit from its manufacturer, according to Allianz Malaysia personnel.

When attending to EVs in need of recharging in less confined spaces, the Allianz EV Ranger fleet has more conventional, road-going rescue vehicles carrying EV charging equipment.

Allianz Malaysia presently has two vehicles in its EV Ranger fleet, each providing up to 10 kWh of recharge as with the RoboRanger robotic cart. This is dispensed at up to 80 kW DC.

The EV Ranger service by Allianz Malaysia comes as part of the Allianz EV Shield vehicle insurance policy for EVs. This is for active Private Car Comprehensive (EV) policies, and policyholders receive RM200 in charging credit with the purchase of any eligible policy, including Smart Home Cover, Allianz Business Shield, Commercial Fire, Standard Fire, PremierHome, Houseowner, or Householder policy.
