2024 Toyota Prius in Indonesia – 5th-gen 1.8L hybrid and 2.0L PHEV, indent order only, from RM202k

It’s taken a good long while, but the fifth-generation Toyota Prius has finally been launched in Indonesia at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) that opens today. The latest iteration of Toyota’s pioneering hybrid hatchback will be offered in the archipelago in both regular and plug-in hybrid versions.

Only the standard hybrid model is currently available, priced at 698,000,000 rupiah (RM202,500). Such is the expected low volume that the Prius, fully imported from the Tsutsumi plant in Aichi, Japan, can only be purchased via indent order, with a minimum wait time of three months.

New it may be, but the Prius – at least in Indonesia – still uses the old 1.8 litre hybrid powertrain, also found in the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The 2ZR-FXE VVT-i Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine produces 98 PS and 142 Nm, and when combined with a 95 PS/185 Nm electric motor and eCVT, it delivers a total system output of 140 PS.

Also shown at the Toyota stand is the far more potent PHEV variant. Under the bonnet sits a M20A-FXS 2.0 litre Dynamic Force engine that churns out 151 PS and 188 Nm, paired with a lustier 163 PS/208 Nm electric motor for a total output of 223 PS. A 13.6 kWh battery provides an all-electric range of up to 105 km and can be topped up using an AC charger at up to 3.7 kW, taking four and a half hours for a full charge.

Built on a revised version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), the latest Prius is far sleeker than the car it replaces. A sweeping, extremely low-slung roofline means the new one is a full 50 mm lower than before; couple that with the jutting front end, C-shaped headlights, hidden rear door handles and full-width taillights and you end up with a very dramatic-looking package – especially in the new Mustard hero colour. Unfortunately, the Indonesian model is saddled with the smallest 17-inch wheels.

The interior is just as futuristic, borrowing the electric bZ4X’s high-mounted digital instrument display that places vehicular information closer to the driver’s line of sight. Indonesian buyers get the smaller nine-inch infotainment touchscreen, a freestanding unit that sits above the centre air vents.

As expected at this price, the Prius comes as standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver assists. This includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist and automatic high beam.

Now that the new Prius has gone on sale in ASEAN, might we expect the Prius to make its way to Malaysia? Distributor UMW Toyota Motor already previewed the car at the Beyond Zero showcase event earlier this year – in tasty 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition concept form, no less – but the car’s CBU-only status means it won’t be eligible for any form of hybrid tax incentives. Nevertheless, would you buy this thing at over RM200,000? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

  • GIIAS 2024: Kia Carnival Hybrid launched in Indonesia – 245 PS 1.6 litre turbo petrol hybrid, over RM400k!

GIIAS 2024: Kia Carnival Hybrid launched in Indonesia – 245 PS 1.6 litre turbo petrol hybrid, over RM400k!

The fourth-generation Kia Carnival facelift has made its public debut at this year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), albeit with an update to variant line-up that sees a new turbo hybrid option. The refreshed MPV was first introduced in the country (fully imported from South Korea) back in May in Premiere and Dynamic variants, all with the same turbodiesel engine.

With the adjustments to the variant line-up, the Dynamic appears to have been dropped, while the Premiere is retained. This variant continues on with a Smartstream D 2.2 litre inline-four CRDi turbodiesel engine making 194 PS and 441 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic driving the front wheels.

The new addition is the Hybrid, which features a 1.6 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine augmented by an electric motor to drive the front wheels. This combination results in outputs of 245 PS and 367 Nm, with a six-speed automatic being the transmission pairing. The turbo powertrain is similar to the one found in the Sorento Hybrid and was previewed in Singapore back in January this year.

As for seating arrangements, the Premiere is offered with seven (2+2+3 layout) or 11 seats (2+3+3+3) – the latter across four rows instead of three – while the Hybrid is only offered as a seven-seater. Official pricing for the Carnival Hybrid is 1.388 billion rupiah (about RM402k), which makes it even more expensive than the Dynamic that retailed for 960 million rupiah (about RM278k) as well as the Premiere that starts from 998 million rupiah (RM289k).

In terms of equipment, all variants of the Carnival facelift come standard with LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, a smart power tailgate, dual sunroofs, dual 12.3-inch screens (instrumentation and a touchscreen for the infotainment system), a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, three-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, remote engine start, a surround view monitor and a wireless charging pad.

The Premiere 7-Seater gets 18-inch wheels, while the 11-Seater version as well as the Hybrid 7-Seater come with larger 19-inch units. The driver and front passenger seats of the three variants are powered and come with heating and ventilation functions, the former also found on the second-row seats. Specific to the Premiere 11-Seater and Hybrid 7-Seater are premium relaxation seats for the second row with electric adjustment, leg support and ventilation.

Advanced driver assistance systems that are fitted across the range include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and following assist, autonomous emergency braking with junction assist as well as blind spot monitoring and collision-avoidance assist.

Design changes for the Carnival are meant to evoke the latest Sorento and EV9, with highlight cues being with vertically-oriented LED headlamps that are framed by T-shaped daytime running lights. The latter extends into the top section of the reprofiled grille with a new insert pattern, while the rear taillights mimicking the front DRLs hug the corners of the MPV and extend into the tailgate.

Inside, a notable revision is a new touch panel under the infotainment screen that is similar to the one in EV6, whereby the climate and media controls are integrated into a single unit – you tap a button on the panel to switch between modes. Beyond this, the rest of the interior appears largely similar to before.

Daihatsu Rocky Crossfield at GIIAS 2024 – Ativa twin gets a rugged makeover; e-smart Hybrid goes two-tone

Greetings from Jakarta, where the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024 has just kicked off. Over at the Daihatsu booth, the automaker has a couple of Rocky versions on display, one of which is this, the Rocky Crossfield.

If the name sounds familiar, it should be. The brand showed a Crossfield concept at Tokyo Auto Salon in 2022, and the 2024 outing largely follows the same projection, albeit with a more rugged outlook than before.

The roof rack and yellow fog lamps are still around, and the black finish on the 16-inch alloys has been retained, as have the AT tyre (Dunlop Grandtrek ATS) and white lettering theme.

However, the new Crossfield amps up its Sand Beige exterior with contrast coloured bumpers (in Black Doff) and a new front grille, the latter presented with prominent “Daihatsu” lettering on the top section of the frame. Black decals with ‘Rocky Crossfield’ wording on the lower sides complete the look.

The Crossfield presented at the show is equipped with a WA-VE 1.2 litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder engine, which makes 86 PS at 6,000 rpm and 105 Nm at 4,200 rpm. The Rocky is also sold in Indonesia with the 1KR-VET 1.0 litre turbocharged three-cylinder.

The second Rocky variant the automaker has on display at the event is an amped up version of the Rocky e-Smart Hybrid called the City Cruiser. The show car features a two-tone exterior, dressing up the front fog lamp and rear inserts, body cladding, side mirror covers and roof in blue to contrast with the primary silver finish. It also gets more aggressive-looking wheels and sportier tyres.

If it also looks familiar, well, that’s because it has been seen before too – it’s literally the same car that was presented at TAS 2022, where it was known as the Premium.

  • 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is a CKD EV in Indonesia, including batteries – up to 602 km range; from RM145k

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is a CKD EV in Indonesia, including batteries – up to 602 km range; from RM145k

At this year’s Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMI) launched the second-generation Kona Electric, which is locally assembled in the country. The CKD operation is extensive as it also covers the batteries used, which makes the Kona Electric the first Hyundai electric vehicle (EV) to use batteries (and cells) made in Indonesia.

Earlier this month, Hyundai Motor Group announced a joint venture with LG Energy Solutions for the local production of EV battery cells in Indonesia. The JV company is called PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power, which produces battery cells at a plant in Karawang before they are assembled into battery packs PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia that has the capacity to supply 50,000 units annually.

Both factories complement the PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) plant that currently makes the Ioniq 5, and now, the Kona Electric. This facility is poised to increase its EV production capacity to 70,000 units by this year, with total production capacity of 150,000 units per year after.

It should be noted that the battery cell plant in Indonesia is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia with an annual capacity of 10 GWh. This represents another signal of intent that the country wants to become an EV powerhouse in the region. HMI also pointed out during the reveal that the first-generation Kona Electric was the first EV in Indonesia.

Getting back to the Hyundai’s landmark EV for Indonesia, the latest Kona Electric retails from 499 million rupiah (about RM145k) for the base Style Standard Range variant. This is followed by the Prime Standard Range (515 million rupiah or RM149k), Prime Long Range (560 million rupiah or RM162k), Signature Standard Range (575 million rupiah or RM167k) and the range-topping Signature Long Range (575 million rupiah or RM171k).

In terms of specifications, all variants of the Kona Electric come with a front-mounted electric motor, which is rated at the same peak torque of 255 Nm. The difference comes in maximum power, which is 156 PS (154 hp or 114.6 kW) for the Standard Range variants, while the Long Range packs 217 PS (214 hp or 160 kW).

Similarly, the SR cars are equipped with a 48.9-kWh lithium-ion battery for a NEDC-rated range of 448 km. The LR variants get a higher-capacity, 66-kWh unit for up to 602 km with the Prime Long Range, or 549 km with the Signature Long Range.

As for standard equipment, the Kona Electric comes standard with a battery conditioning system, navigation point of interest function (showing EV charging stations), LED daytime running lights, six airbags, ABS, brake assist, hill start assist, an electronic parking brake (with auto hold), a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, remote start, Bluelink telematics, a dual-zone climate control.

Going by variant, the Style lacks any advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) unlike the Prime that comes with autonomous emergency braking (with junction assist), lane following and keeping assist, driver attention warning and active cruise control with stop and go.

The Signature gets additional systems such as blind spot monitoring with collision avoidance assist, parking collision-avoidance assist when reversing, a surround view monitor and rear cross traffic alert with avoidance assist. The top-spec option also gets further goodies like an eight-speaker Bose sound system, a wireless charging pad, a full-width glass sunroof, a smart tailgate, vehicle-to-load (V2L) function and 19-inch wheels (all other variants get 17 inchers).
