  • GWM Tank 300 open for booking in Malaysia – RM250k est. price, deliveries of off-road SUV set to start in July

GWM Tank 300 open for booking in Malaysia – RM250k est. price, deliveries of off-road SUV set to start in July

Great Wall Motor Malaysia has announced that the order books have opened for the Tank 300, with the off-raod SUV expected to make its way into the local market very soon. Slated to be introduced in Q2, the company says that deliveries are due to begin in July following its official launch, which is now expected to be sometime next month.

As previously indicated during its preview in March and recent test drive in China, the Tank 300 will arrive here as a CBU fully-imported offering, and will be offered in its non-hybrid 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engine form. Estimated pricing has also been firmed up, with the SUV anticipated to be priced in the region of RM250,000, slightly lower than the first indication of it offered earlier this month.

To recap, the mill will offer 220 PS (217 hp or 162 kW) and 380 Nm in the way of output, with drive delivered via an eight-speed automatic transmission and a dual-speed, electronically-controlled part-time four-wheel drive system. Technical highlights include an all-terrain control system with nine driving modes, a ramp angle of 23.1° and a maximum gradability of 70%, along with a maximum wading depth of 700 mm.

Inside, you’ll find a well-appointed interior, with novelties including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen – with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support – as well as Nappa leather upholstery. Standard fit items include a nine-speaker Infinity sound system, automatic air-conditioning and double-layer acoustic glass (for improved in-cabin NVH levels), among others.

Meanwhile, driver assistance kit on the ANCAP five-star rated SUV will include items such as adaptive cruise control, lane drparture warning and autonomous emergency braking as well as a 360-degree all-around view monitor with a Transparent Chassis Function.

The Tank 300 is of course on display at the ongoing Malaysia Autoshow 2024, shown at the event in its regular forms as well as the unit you see in these images, a specially-kitted version that dresses the SUV up with body-coloured flares and flashy accoutrements such as the OTT bonnet and cool-looking aluminium storage box mounted on the rear access panel of the vehicle.

However, don’t get too excited about all the glitz that’s on show or hoping that it will be offered here, because it won’t be, not through official channels at least. According to GWM Malaysia, the black display unit and its Chinese-market accessories was brought in to show potential customers what can be done in terms of customisation for the vehicle, should they wish to explore that path.

    2024 Honda Transalp 750 Malaysia debut, RM56,800

Not quite the return of the legendary XLV750 but the 2024 Honda Transalp 750 makes it Malaysian debut at the on-going Malaysia Auto Show 2024, priced at RM56,800 ex-showroom. The XL750 Transalp slots in between the Honda NX500 (RM37,099) and Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin (RM117,888) in Boon Siew Honda’s adventure-touring catalogue.

The Transalp 750 carries a liquid-cooled, eight-valve parallel-twin with 270-degree crank and SOHC displacing 755 cc. Power is rated at 90.5 hp at 9,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 75 Nm at 7,500 rpm going through a slipper and assist clutch equipped six-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

Suspension for the XL750 Transalp uses Showa 43mm SFF-CA (Separate Function Fork-Cartridge) upside-down forks and preload-adjustable rear monoshock. The Transalp gets 200 mm of suspension travel in front and 190 mm in the rear, with 210 mm of ground clearance.

Catering to off-road sensibilities, the Transalp 750 comes with a 21-inch wheel in front and an 18-inch hoop in the rear. Tyre sizing is 90/90 and 150/70, front and rear, respectively.

The Transalp 750 carries 16.9-litres of fuel in the tank while seat height is set at 850 mm and weight is listed as 208 kg. In Malaysia, primary competition for the Transalp 750 comes from the Yamaha Tenere 700, priced at RM69,988.

  • 2024 Kia EV3 debuts as brand’s new compact EV SUV – up to 600 km range; 204 PS; Volvo EX30 competitor

2024 Kia EV3 debuts as brand’s new compact EV SUV – up to 600 km range; 204 PS; Volvo EX30 competitor

After some light teasing, Kia has officially unveiled the all-new EV3. The South Korean brand’s latest electric vehicle (EV) joins the EV5, EV6 and EV9 as a compact SUV that will go on sale in its home country in July, with Europe and other regions set to follow from the second half of this year.

First previewed by an identically named concept last October, the EV3 is built on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) but doesn’t get an 800V architecture like the EV6 and EV9. Instead, it follows the EV5 by using a 400V architecture, which enables a DC fast charging that can get the 81.4-kWh battery from a 10-80% state of charge in about 31 minutes.

Fully charged, the EV3 delivers up to 600 km of range following the WLTP standard, but bear in mind the figures mentioned so far only apply to the Long Range variant. There’s also a Standard Range model with a 58.3-kWh battery which gets less range.

In a media briefing prior to the debut, Kia said the company went with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry for the battery instead of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) because the former offered better power outputs and had a longer lifespan. Full charging details weren’t provided but the EV3 is said to come with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) system and will definitely support AC charging.

Regardless of the battery chosen, both variants share the same electric motor, which is mounted at the front instead of the rear. Outputs are 204 PS (201 hp or 150 kW) and 283 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 7.5 seconds and top speed of 170 km/h.

The EV3 gets eDTVC (Electric Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control) to ensure optimum traction on the move, while a new piece of Kia tech to debut here is i-Pedal 3.0 regenerative braking, essentially one-pedal driving with different levels of adjustment available to the driver.

In terms of dimensions, the EV3 measures 4,300 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, 1,560 mm tall and packs a wheelbase of 2,680 mm. For context, that’s about the size of a Volvo EX30 and the current Honda HR-V we have back home. The SUV also has a 25-litre frunk and a 460-litre boot, the latter said to be best in its class and with an adjustable two-tier luggage board with 140 mm of load height flexibility.

    Kia EV3 EV3 GT-Line

If you found the EV5 and EV9 appealing to look at, the EV3 will likely be in your good books as well. Appearing as a sort of “baby EV9”, Kia’s latest adopts the Opposites United design philosophy and features boxy rear fenders, a sloping roofline as well as a robust stance. Despite the chunky shape, the drag coefficient (Cd) is quoted at just 0.263.

Meanwhile, the ‘Tiger Face Star Map’ carries a daytime running light signature reminiscent of constellations that has light bars wrapping around the main headlamp clusters that carry several individual diodes.

A closed-off grille is also part of the front end, which gets two bumper designs. The base version has its lower intake large covered up and is joined by black trim with an array of vertical slats. Go with the GT-Line and it’s a design that looks to be inspired by the EV6, with “tusk-like” elements on either side of a large black section with small cutouts.

The prominent bookends are replicated at the rear of the GT-Line to frame the number plate, while the base model is less expressive. Both get the same taillights which mimic the DRLs seen up front. For the EV3, Kia is offering nine body colours, including two exclusive ones called Aventurine Green and Terracotta.

Kia EV3 interior – base variant (left); GT-Line (right)

Moving inside, we find a minimalistic dashboard design that doesn’t stray too far from what we saw in the concept. The air vents are positioned in a single file to simulate a full-width look and act to separate the dash into two sections, with the bottom having physical controls for the air-conditioning system while between the central air vents is a simple media volume control.

Above that is almost 30 inches of screen real estate, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a five-inch air-conditioning touch panel.

This setup is like what you would find in the EV9 and is meant to promote ergonomics and ease of use along with the multi-button steering wheel that is lifted straight from the latest EV6. Buyers can also option a 12-inch head-up display that projects information on the windshield to minimise driver distraction.

Recycled materials are used for many parts of the cabin, which comes with Air, Earth and Water trim finishes. There are also several colour themes to choose from, including Subtle Grey, Warm Grey, Blue and Onyx Black, the last of which is a GT-Line exclusive.

For practicality, the centre console incorporates a sliding table and storage area in addition to a few driving-related controls. There’s also storage under the console for items as large as a small backpack, while other notable features include ambient lighting and seats that come with a fold-back relaxation mode.

As for the infotainment system, it integrates LG’s Automotive Content Platform (ACP) powered by webOS to enable in-car gaming and content consumption, complemented by a Harman Kardon sound system. The infotainment also has configurable themes (purchasable through the Kia Connect Store) and another first for a Kia EV, an AI assistant.

No shortage of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with the EV3 either, with available features being Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

What do you think of the Kia EV3? Do you like the way it looks and what do you think of the range and tech it comes with? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

  • 2024 Citroën C3 Aircross shown in Malaysia – 7-seat SUV with 110 PS 1.2T 3-cyl; Ami Buggy also on display

2024 Citroën C3 Aircross shown in Malaysia – 7-seat SUV with 110 PS 1.2T 3-cyl; Ami Buggy also on display

Peugeot may be the star of Stellantis’ Malaysia Autoshow stand, but those who venture towards the back of the booth will also be treated to a few left-field offerings from Citroën. But hang on, didn’t this quintessential French brand sell its last car here at the end of 2020?

Yes, but haven’t you heard? Stellantis Malaysia is poised to bring Citroën back to our shores as a “mainstream” brand (think of it as a rival to Toyota and Honda), and its presence here is a look at things to come. To that end, the company is showcasing two cars, namely the C3 Aircross and Ami Buggy.

    Citroën C3 Aircross

2024 Citroën C3 Aircross shown in Malaysia – 7-seat SUV with 110 PS 1.2T 3-cyl; Ami Buggy also on display

The C3 Aircross is a world away from the Euro-centric little tyke that was previously sold here. It’s now grown into a seven-seater SUV very much in the vein of the Perodua Aruz and the dearly-departed Honda BR-V. It’s built on the Smart Car Platform and has been designed with the Southeast Asian market in mind, made in India.

Measuring 4,323 mm long, 1,796 mm wide and 1,669 mm tall, the C3 Aircross is quite a bit smaller than the Aruz (4,435 mm long) and especially the BR-V (the new second-generation model is 4,490 mm long), and it has the shortest wheelbase of all at 2,671 mm. It is wider than all of them, however, which should free up some shoulder room, especially at the back.

Power comes from the 1.2 litre PureTech turbocharged three-cylinder engine last seen in the Peugeot 208, producing 110 PS at 5,500 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. Drive is sent to the front wheels through a choice of either six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes, the latter obviously being a shoo-in for our market.

The C3 Aircross’ distinctive design features split headlights with X-shaped daytime running lights, chunky wheel arch flares, scalloped fender surfacing, C-shaped taillights and thick body-coloured C-pillars split by a black band; this defines the border of the optional two-tone colour scheme. Unlike the recently-introduced European model, this car still doesn’t get the new Citroën badge with the oval border.

The car you see here is locked and heavily tinted, so we can’t show you the interior. However, you can expect to find a seven-inch digital instrument display, a ten-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a cool interlocking design for the air vents.

Unfortunately, the C3 Aircross only comes with two airbags and no driver assistance systems whatsoever (not even autonomous emergency braking). We can imagine Stellantis will have to do some significant reengineering to add these much-requested features – including six airbags at the minimum – for our market.

    Citroën My Ami Buggy Concept

2024 Citroën C3 Aircross shown in Malaysia – 7-seat SUV with 110 PS 1.2T 3-cyl; Ami Buggy also on display

The other car being shown is a real oddball. This is the Ami Buggy, an off-road version of the Ami electric quadricycle. Specifically, it’s the My Ami Buggy concept shown in late 2021, coming with knobbly ATV-style tyres (wrapped over tiny ten-inch wheels), skid plates, wheel arch extensions and a bull bar at the front.

Other concept-specific touches include head- and taillight guards, a “visor” over the front windscreen, a roof rack with a front light bar and a spare wheel, and a complete lack of any doors. In place of the latter are tubular “protectors” that house deployable transparent rain guards for inclement weather. No, this is not road-legal in the slightest. The car is finished in matte black with a retina-searing yellow interior.

All these cutesy beach buggy design cues go on top of an already cuddly package – the Ami is a tiny city runabout that measures just 2,400 mm long, 1,390 mm wide and 1,520 mm tall, making it an absolute cinch to park. It’s slightly longer and quite a bit wider than the Renault Twizy that was once sold here. That “car” (if you could call it that) sat two occupants in tandem; the Citroën can just about fit two people side-by-side.

Those two people will have a hard time getting anywhere quickly, because the Ami draws just 8 PS (6 kW, or half that of a Twizy) from its single motor, giving it a top speed of only 45 km/h. A tiny 5.5 kWh battery provides a range of 70 km, with a full charge taking three hours from a 220-volt domestic socket.

Of course, the Ami isn’t a real consideration for the Malaysian market, owing to its lack of power, top speed, a right-hand-drive version (yes, even in the UK) and any safety features whatsoever (even the Twizy had a driver airbag for crying out loud). But are you excited to see the Citroën brand back in Malaysia? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

  • 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX Malaysia launch, RM89,900

    2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX Malaysia launch, RM89,900

Getting its official launch at the Malaysia Auto Show 2024 is the 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX, priced at RM89,900. This crossover-tourer comes up against stiff competition in Malaysia, including the recently updated and launched BMW Motorrad S1000XR (approximately RM130,000), the Kawasaki Versys 1000 (RM81,900), the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT (RM69,998) and the Ducati Multistrada V2S (RM105,900).

Taking the engine from the GSX-S1000GT sports-tourer, the GSX-S1000GX carries Suzuki’s vaunted 999 cc four-stroke, liquid-cooled DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. Euro 5 compliant, the GSX-S1000GX delivers 152 PS and 106 Nm of torque, numbers that compare against the BMW S1000XR’s 165 PS and 114 Nm torque.

The six-speed gearbox comes equipped with an up-and-down quickshifter, with slipper clutch and chain final drive to the rear wheel. Wheel sizing on the GSX-S1000GX is biased towards road work, with 17-inch wheels front and rear wearing 120/70 and 190/50 rubber.

New for the GSX-S1000GX is semi-active electronic suspension, dubbed Suzuki Advanced Electronic Suspension (SAES) with four electronically controlled damping modes– “H” (Hard), “M” (Medium), “S” (Soft) and a customizable “U” (User) setting. This automatically adjusts damping force on the fly to match riding conditions according to the selected mode.

Having ridden the GSX-S1000GX in Portugal recently during the international media test, we can tell you the suspension does work, and work well. A full review follows when we get the green light from Suzuki Malaysia.

    2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX Malaysia launch, RM89,900

Also new is Suzuki Road Adaptive Stabilization (SRAS) that seamlessly switches between settings to emphasise responsiveness when riding on normal road surfaces, and settings that smooth out bumps when riding over uneven surfaces, causing Suzuki Floating Ride Control (SFRC) to activate.

The GSX-S1000GX carries 19-litres of fuel in the tank which Suzuki says is good for 6.21 litres per 100 km. Seat height is set at 845 mm while the GSX-S1000GX tips the scales at 232 kg, compared to the 226 kg of the S1000XR.

Both the Model 3 LR have their warranty stated as expiring in April 2028 so they were in use as demos since last month. This means you get around one month less warranty compared to a brand new unit.

  • 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ Electric Art Line and updated AMG Line now in Malaysia – RM380k-RM430k

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ Electric Art Line and updated AMG Line now in Malaysia – RM380k-RM430k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has added a new Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan variant to its line-up with the introduction of the EQE 350+ Electric Art Line. The model made its debut earlier today alongside the updated EQE 350+ AMG Line and two new EQE 350+ SUV variants.

The base EQE 350+ Electric Art Line is priced at RM379,888, while the updated EQE 350+ AMG Line, which was launched here in December 2022, now goes for RM429,888 (RM10k more than previously), both on-the-road without insurance but with SST. Away from the duo, the AMG EQE 53 continues to be offered, sitting at the very top of the EQE sedan hierarchy here.

As before, the sedan features a rear electric motor developing 292 PS (288 hp or 215 kW) and 565 Nm, enabling the EV to do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h.
Providing juice to the motor is an underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 90.56 kWh, and this provides up to 682 km of WLTP-rated travel on a single charge.

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ Electric Art Line and updated AMG Line now in Malaysia – RM380k-RM430k

The inclusion of 22 kW onboard AC charging as standard from the 11 kW previously means it now takes four hours and 45 minutes to get the battery from a 10-100% state of charge (SoC). No change in DC fast charging numbers – at a maximum rate of 170 kW, it takes 32 minutes to get the unit from a 10 to 80%.

Kit on the base variant includes an Electric Art exterior and interior, Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, 19-inch five-twin spoke light-alloy wheels, a Keyless-Go Comfort package and an Advanced Sound System audio system.

Elsewhere, the seats are upholstered in black/space grey Artico man-made leather, while the dashboard is adorned with laser-cut backlit trim with the Mercedes-Benz star pattern and the centre console, a black fine-structure look, similar to that seen before with the initial EQE 350+ AMG Line.

As for the updated AMG Line, it now gets new features such as a panoramic sunroof, rear axle steering (which offers up to 10 degrees of steering angle adjustment), an Airmatic air suspension (previously, comfort suspension) and an electric charging socket flap, among other things.

Otherwise, the equipment specifications remain unchanged, so items such as the head-up display, Burmester 3D surround sound system and wireless charging pad and 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and a 17.7-inch OLED centre touchscreen continue to feature.

Likewise, the Driving Assistance Plus Package, which offers items such as autonomous emergency braking, Active Distance Assist Distronic (adaptive cruise control) with extended automatic restart in traffic jams, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive Manoeuvre Support and Pre-Safe Impulse Side.

  • Jaecoo J6 previewed in Malaysia – funky Land Rover Defender-lookalike EV with up to 279 PS, 501 km range

Jaecoo J6 previewed in Malaysia – funky Land Rover Defender-lookalike EV with up to 279 PS, 501 km range

Jaecoo has been building momentum in Malaysia with a steady drip feed of teasers and information of its new, soon-to-be-launched J7. But Chery’s upmarket off-road brand is already looking forward to the future by previewing a couple of forthcoming models at the Malaysia Autoshow, including this – the all-electric J6.

First seen in China last year as the iCar 03 (iCar is yet another Chery sub-brand), it’s a compact electric SUV that’s slightly shorter than the Toyota Corolla Cross. It measures just 4,406 mm long but a massive 1,910 mm wide and 1,715 mm tall, while its wheelbase is a generous 2,715 mm long.

The tall and wide stance gives the J6 a quasi-4×4 appearance not too dissimilar to the Land Rover Defender. The visual connection to the latter is heightened by the boxy design, chunky wheel arch extensions, upright wraparound glasshouse, black roof and even the sideways-opening tailgate.

Adding a bit of funk to the styling are the tessellated “i” daytime running lights and taillights (a nod to the iCar brand), the former joining the slim headlight/grille bar. As promised, local cars will get the illuminated “i” front badge and the sizeable 40 litre rear storage “backpack”.

One promise Jaecoo didn’t deliver was a right-hand-drive show car, the unit seen here still being a left-hooker. Even so, we’re getting a very good look at what the J6’s interior will look like, with the Land Rover cues continuing in the available black-and-white colour scheme, large grab handles on the centre console and door cards, copious amounts of metallic silver trim and even exposed Allen bolt heads.

As befits a Chinese car these days, there’s tech aplenty, including a 9.2-inch digital instrument display and a huge 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. You also get a 50-watt Qi wireless charger, a panoramic glass roof and an optional 12-speaker Infinity sound system.

Jaecoo has taken another book out of the Land Rover playbook by giving the J6 an all-aluminium structure, but beaten the storied British brand with an all-electric powertrain. Two versions of the iCar 03 are available in the Middle Kingdom, one with a rear motor producing 184 PS (135 kW) and 220 Nm of torque, the other adding a front motor for a total system output of 279 PS (205 kW) and 385 Nm.

There are also three sizes of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, including a 50.63 kWh unit (only offered on the RWD model) with a range of 401 km, a 63.69 kWh version with a range of 501 km (RWD) or 472 km (AWD) and an AWD-exclusive 69.77 kWh battery with a range of 501 km. All figures are on China’s lenient CLTC cycle, of course.

Unfortunately, charging speeds are fairly modest, with DC fast charging limited to 60, 80 or 85 kW depending on the battery size, all bringing the state of charge from 30 to 80% in 30 minutes. You also get just 6.6 kW of maximum AC charging power. Given Jaecoo’s upmarket positioning over here, we’re expecting to get the highest available specs and the most range.

The J6 should arrive in Malaysia some time after the J7, which is set to be launched here very soon (the car was tipped to go on sale in the first half of the year, and there’s just over a month left). Would you get this over a burgeoning pack of electric SUVs and sedans that are already here? Sound off in the comments after the jump.

Route 1 starts from the Putrajaya Sentral MRT station and will pass through government administrative destinations in Precincts 2, 3 and 4, while Route 2 will go from Putrajaya Sentral MRT station to IOI City Mall, said Masrizal.

“The ride is free throughout the trial period. Passengers need to scan the QR code provided at the passenger pick-up station,” he said. Should the trials go to plan, the ART tram will enter service by the end of this year, according to the report.

The electrically powered trackless tram can accommodate up to 307 passengers at a time, and is capable of a top speed of 70 km/h. Earlier this year in January, Putrajaya Corporation announced that the trackless tram pilot project in the administrative capital is to run until December 2024.

  • 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ SUV Electric Art Line / AMG Line EVs launched in Malaysia – RM399k-RM449k

2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE350+ SUV Electric Art Line / AMG Line EVs launched in Malaysia – RM399k-RM449k

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has expanded the Mercedes-Benz EQE model range in the country, with the introduction of four new variants of the nameplate (actually, three, with the fourth essentially being an upgrade) to its line-up. Two of these are EQE SUV versions, which we’ll take a look at first.

The EQE SUV first made its Malaysian debut in December last year, arriving here in EQE 500 4Matic guise. The variant continues to be on sale at RM485,888 and remains the range-topping model, but is now joined by the two rear-wheel drive versions, the EQE 350+ SUV Electric Art Line, which is priced at RM398,888, and the EQE 350+ SUV AMG Line, which goes for RM448,888, both on-the-road without insurance, but with SST.

Both feature an identical powertrain, in this case a rear electric motor offering 292 PS (288 hp or 215 kW) and 565 Nm of torque. A 10 module, 400-volt lithium-ion battery with a usable energy capacity of 90.56 kWh allows up to 596 km of WLTP-rated travel on a single charge. Performance figures are also similar, with both EQE 350+ SUVs taking 6.7 seconds to accomplish the 0-100 km/h sprint on the way to a top speed of 210 km/h.

As for charging times, it’ll take four hours and 45 minutes to get the battery from a 0-100% state of charge (SoC) with AC charging at 22 kW. With DC fast charging (CCS2 connection) at up to 170 kW, the unit can be juiced up from 10-80% SoC in 32 minutes.

External elements on the Electric Art Line variant includes an Electric Art exterior, Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and 20-inch five-spoke light-alloy wheels, while the interior also goes the Electric Art route, with Neotex/Artico man-made leather black and space grey upholstery as well as laser-cut backlit trim with the Mercedes-Benz star pattern to be found.

Also making its way on is active ambient lighting, a centre console in a black fine-structure finish, black fabric roof liner, comfort seats, velour floor mats, a leather-clad multi-function steering wheel, Thermotronic multi-zone climate control system, a front wireless phone charging pad and comfort suspension.

The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is of course present, with displays consisting of a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and a 17.7-inch OLED centre touchscreen. Features of the infotainment system include Advanced Sound System audio, a fingerprint scanner for quick login to your user profile, augmented reality for the included navigation function as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

As you’d expect, the costlier EQE 350+ SUV AMG Line variant – which rides on 20-inch AMG five-twin spoke light-alloy wheels – improves on equipment levels, carrying over some of the kit seen on the EQE 500 SUV, these being a panoramic sunroof, Airmatic air suspension, rear axle steering (with a steering angle of 10 degrees for improved maneuverability), a Burmester 3D surround sound system and sports seats.

It also gets aluminium-look illuminated running boards with rubber studs, and the AMG Line specification brings along leather upholstery, a head-up display, AMG floor mats, an Energising package, an Air Balance package, an Acoustic Comfort package as well as a multi-function sports steering wheel in nappa leather.

Trim elements also mirror the EQE 500, being presented in a brown open-pore magnolia wood finish with aluminium Mercedes-Benz star pattern motifs.

Both EQE 350+ SUV variants come equipped with a Driving Assistance Plus Package as standard, and this and includes systems such as autonomous emergency braking, Active Distance Assist Distronic (adaptive cruise control) with extended automatic restart in traffic jams, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Steering Assist, Evasive Manoeuvre Support and Pre-Safe Impulse Side.

Deliveries of the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ SUV Electric Art Line and the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ SUV AMG Line will commence in June.

  • EV fire blanket demonstrated by Fire and Rescue department of Malaysia – suitable for most vehicles

EV fire blanket demonstrated by Fire and Rescue department of Malaysia – suitable for most vehicles

Of the several concerns regarding electric vehicle operation and ownership, the risk of fire is rare but nonetheless present. Given that thermal runaway is one of the key concerns, this poses a different challenge compared to fires involving internal combustion engined vehicles to fire and rescue departments entrusted with containing the situation.

In February this year, SIRIM QAS launched its EV fire blanket testing service and certification process. The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia has carried out a demonstration of an EV fire blanket on an electric vehicle at the ongoing 2024 Malaysia Autoshow.

Due to event constraints, the demonstration employed a smoke machine instead of setting up an actual combustion scenario. At the demonstration, the EV fire blanket used is made of a special treated high temperature fibreglass cloth, according to the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA).

EV fire blanket demonstrated by Fire and Rescue department of Malaysia – suitable for most vehicles

This has a thickness of 0.6 mm, measures six metres wide by eight metres long, and weighs 39 kg. The blanket comes with EN13501-1 NFPA 701 certification, and is suitable for use on most vehicles on the market, according to MyZEVA. The operating temperature covered by EV fire blankets is typically around 700 degrees Celsius, and has a melting point of 1,600 degrees Celsius, according to MyZEVA.

At present, the make of the EV blanket has not been specifically named, though a brief search online reveals that EV fire blankets span a price range from RM1,700 to RM4,500.

The association states that it is important for every strategically located fire and rescue station to be equipped with a supply of sufficient EV fire blankets, and recommends that importers or manufacturers of electric vehicles, as well as charge point operators (CPOs) contribute EV fire blankets to local fire stations.

MyZEVA also recommends that every commercial building has at least two EV fire blankets stored in each main control room, and the association will work with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia to continually research more effective methods of containing EV fires, as technology in the automotive industry continues to develop.

The association also recommends that every electric vehicle sold in Malaysia includes a diagram for rescue personnel, for the purposes of providing the correct method of disconnecting relevant circuits or to relocate certain components in an emergency. MyZEVA notes that some companies have placed QR codes on their products in order to assist rescue personnel during emergency operations.

It is hoped that demonstrations such as this one will help the public gain confidence in the safety of electric vehicles, MyZEVA said.

Incidences of EV fires have been relatively few, with one that caught fire while being charged at a dealership – which was later found to be operating the charging bay without a license from the Energy Commission – and an earlier case occurring at an outdoor carpark.

  • 2024 Lexus LM teased for Malaysia – luxurious four-seater MPV based on new Alphard coming soon?

2024 Lexus LM teased for Malaysia – luxurious four-seater MPV based on new Alphard coming soon?

Lexus Malaysia has released a teaser for the new second-generation LM on its Instagram profile. The ultra-luxurious MPV – based on the fourth-gen Toyota Alphard – is the last of the trio (the other being the Vellfire) to arrive here, despite being the first to be revealed to the world back in April last year.

Despite the shared underpinnings, the latest LM is quite different from its sibling, so much so that it now has a unique AW10 codename (ironically shared with the original AW10/AW11 MR2; the Alphard is the AH40). The dashboard and much of the interior panels are different, and crucially, so is the sheet metal – including the inverted D-pillar “fin” shown in the teaser – meaning that we will see far fewer “converts” this time around.

New features include the addition of Lexus’ Tazuna infotainment interface first seen on the second-gen NX, incorporating a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 14-inch centre touchscreen, physical climate control dials and the jettisoning of the awful Remote Touch pad.

2024 Lexus LM teased for Malaysia – luxurious four-seater MPV based on new Alphard coming soon?

You also get a 23-speaker Mark Levinson Reference sound system, the Lexus Climate Concierge and, on the four-seater model, a massive 48-inch widescreen rear display that can be used in split-screen form with twin HDMI inputs, plus a fridge.

The outgoing LM350 is only available with four pews, even though a seven-seater option is available in other markets; it remains to be seen if distributor UMW Toyota Motor will offer the latter this time around. Perhaps the company will mirror the approach taken by its Australian counterpart, where the LM is sold as a seven-seater in LM350h form and as a four-seater in LM500h guise.

One thing that’s certain is that the LM will no longer be available with a V6, all variants now being four-cylinder hybrids. The LM350h uses a 190 PS/236 Nm 2.5 litre A25A-FXS naturally-aspirated Atkinson-cycle engine connected an eCVT, featuring twin electric motors that produce 182 PS and 270 Nm of torque. Total system output is rated at 250 PS.

There’s also an LM500h that uses the same all-wheel-drive Direct4 powertrain as the RX500h. Under the bonnet lies a 275 PS/460 Nm 2.4 litre T24A-FTS turbocharged four-pot, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox sandwiching an 87 PS/292 Nm electric motor. A separate 103 PS/169 Nm motor drives the rear wheels, contributing to a total system output of 371 PS and 550 Nm.

Whichever variant UMW Toyota decides to offer here won’t come cheap. The first-gen LM350 is currently priced at RM1,208,000, and given the steadily rising prices of Japanese imports, we can expect the new one to be even more expensive.
