Ferrari Owners Club Malaysia sets record for largest gathering of Ferrari cars in Malaysia with 297 cars

The Ferrari Owners Club Malaysia (FOCM) gathered owners of Ferrari vehicles from within Malaysia and beyond for a mass gathering in Kuala Lumpur last weekend on May 18 for the FOCM Festival 2024.

Here, a total of 297 Ferraris were gathered for an official count, earning the club a place in the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest gathering of Ferrari cars in a single event. The accolade was received by FOCM president Abu Rizal Bakri and Ital Auto Malaysia executive director Zahir Kelvin Ong.

A broad range of models from the Italian supercar marque were in attendance, from earlier models such as the Ferrari 308 GTS, 328 GTB, Dino, F355 Berlinetta and 360 Modena, onwards to more modern machinery such as the 458 Italia, SF90 Stradale and even a halo model that is the LaFerrari Aperta.

Ital Auto Malaysia took over the role of official importer and distributor for Ferrari cars in Malaysia in November 2023, which was announced alongside the Malaysian market arrival of the Ferrari Purosangue and the Roma Spider.

The first Ital Auto Malaysia showroom is located at the Shoppes in Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur, and is complemented by a service centre in Glenmarie. A new, ground-up 3S facility is in the works, and is expected to be ready in 2025 at its earliest.

Do not add ornaments to steering wheel, dashboard; objects become projectiles when airbags deploy

Supplementary restraint systems, more commonly known as airbags, provide a layer of safety for occupants in a vehicle when a crash is unavoidable. These work by rapidly inflating bags upon detection of a collision in order to cushion the occupants before they collide with the interior surfaces of the vehicle.

Decorative pieces added to the interior of vehicles can however severely compromise the performance of these functions, and along with them, the safety of the vehicle’s occupants. As shown by a TikTok user in a video that appears to be recorded in North America, injury can result from these ornaments when placed where the vehicle’s airbags are located.

As shown in the video, the vehicle driver described the location of the ornaments as being located on the airbag housing, and the deployed airbags propelled parts of the ornaments with enough force to pierce the car’s interior door card, while the vehicle driver herself sustained injury on her leg.

Suffice to say, it could have been a lot worse, as the steering wheel airbag is located at the driver’s chest height. This would serve well as a reminder to not have ornaments placed on one’s vehicle dashboard, no matter how secure it may appear to be. While the driver in the video may appear to have sustained minor injuries, others may not be so fortunate.

Upgrade of federal road FT3210 in Hulu Langat by mid-2026 to benefit 52,000 road users daily – Nanta

When it is completed sometime in the middle of 2026, the upgrading of federal road FT3210 from Jalan Dato Alias to the Batu 9 intersection in Hulu Langat is expected to benefit 52,000 road users daily, Bernama reports.

According to works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the RM123.66 million upgrading project was initially scheduled for completion in 2025, but this has been extended due to land acquisition and utility relocation issues.

The project, which was approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan, is aimed at easing traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, from Hulu Langat towards Kuala Lumpur. “This aims to reduce congestion and ensure the comfort and safety of users because this area is developing, and the existing road can no longer accommodate the increasing traffic,” the works minister said.

Work being carried out under the project, which began on Aug 6, 2021, includes upgrading the road starting from the Taman Suntex junction for one kilometre and another kilometre from the Batu 9 intersection to the Jalan Dato Alias intersection.

Part of the upgrading works, which will transform the single two-lane road into a dual-carriageway with four lanes, includes constructing a two-lane one-way flyover from Hulu Langat to Cheras and replacing the Sungai Sering bridge.

  • RM1.2 million in subsidised diesel smuggled daily via foreign vehicles across Bukit Kayu Hitam border: JPJ

RM1.2 million in subsidised diesel smuggled daily via foreign vehicles across Bukit Kayu Hitam border: JPJ

An estimated RM1.2 million in subsidised diesel is leaked through smuggling across the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration, customs, quarantine and security (ICQS) complex using foreign-registered vehicles, Bernama has reported.

This has been detected by the road transport department (JPJ) after confiscating 18 different types of vehicles under Op Tangki in Kuala Muda, Kota Setar and the ICQS complex from May 15 to 19, said JPJ deputy director general for planning and operation Aedy Fadly Ramli.

The subsidised diesel from Malaysia was being smuggled using vehicles such as pick-up trucks and lorries modified to carry an additional tank, said Aedy Fadly. “During the operation, we discovered that the foreign vehicles had modified the tanks to smuggle diesel into neighbouring countries. These smugglers make four to five daily trips to take the diesel across the border,” he said.

The road transport department will be stepping up its operations to continue identifying the vehicles involved in order to prevent further losses suffered by the country from subsidised diesel leakage, he continued.

“Starting this week, we will hold nationwide operations. We have received instructions from the highest level of the Transport Ministry to carry out the operation to curb the smuggling of subsidised diesel,” the JPJ deputy director general for planning and operation said.

  • Nissan Kicks e-Power to be shown at Malaysia Autoshow 2024, previewing hybrid powertrain?

Nissan Kicks e-Power to be shown at Malaysia Autoshow 2024, previewing hybrid powertrain?

Just a few days to go until the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, and one of the brands set to be present, Nissan, has teased its lineup for its display. Distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) appears to be rolling out a few of its current models, including the C27 Serena J Impul (no, not the new C28), Almera Kuro Edition (no, not the facelift) and an extremely rugged version of the Navara.

But there’s one other car that will be shown at the event, and the not-very-well-disguised teaser indicates that it will be the Kicks e-Power. The B-segment crossover – which competes against the Honda HR-V in other markets – will be showing off its hybrid powertrain, which functions in a similar fashion to Honda’s Intelligent Multi-mode Drive (i-MMD) system found in its e:HEV models.

In the Kicks, the hybrid system is centred around a 129 PS/260 Nm, which derives its electricity from a 1.57 kWh battery. The latter is juiced by a 79 PS/103 Nm 1.2 litre HR12DE three-cylinder petrol engine that functions solely as a generator. Unlike Honda’s version, there’s no lock-up clutch to enable the ICE to drive the wheels directly.

Nissan Kicks e-Power to be shown at Malaysia Autoshow 2024, previewing hybrid powertrain?

It’s tempting to treat this as a sign the Kicks will finally be sold in Malaysia very soon – after all, its arrival was telegraphed as early as 2022. But the ship has very much sailed on that one, not least because there’s an all-new model now being sold in the US.

Instead, the Kicks will likely serve as a teaser for another model with e-Power technology – similar to how the Note e-Power was shown at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS) back in 2018 to gauge public interest.

Nissan’s e-Power technology will likely make its debut in the new C28 Serena

This yet-to-be-confirmed model is anticipated to be the C28 Serena. The MPV, which made its debut back in 2022, is no longer available in mild S-Hybrid form, hitherto the only powertrain option for the C26 and C27 Serena in Malaysia.

The sole electrified version instead uses a more powerful 163 PS/315 Nm electric motor and a larger 98 PS/123 Nm 1.4 litre HR14DDe direct-injected three-pot generator. The car has already been seen undergoing testing locally and hence is long overdue for its Malaysian launch.

  • Ford Mustang could gain four-door version; will keep V8 engine, manual gearbox “for as long as possible”

Ford Mustang could gain four-door version; will keep V8 engine, manual gearbox “for as long as possible”

Ford is considering a range of “authentic” combustion-engined variants to join the petrol-powered Mustang range that could include include a four-door model for the first time in its history, Autocar has reported.

While the Mustang has accrued a strong following worldwide, Ford CEO Jim Farley said that new versions would only be accepted by the model’s supporters if these had the “performance and attitude” of existing models, according to the magazine.

“We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang. For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we do other Mustang body forms – a four-door? I believe we could, as long as these models have all the performance and attitude of the original,” Farley told Autocar.

The CEO of the Blue Oval believes that there needs to be a broad range of derivatives within the Mustang line, and the company needs to invest in versions which are accessible to its traditional customer base, as well as newer versions which will take the model further upmarket, with a tip of the hat towards Germany.

“Porsche has been smart about creating derivatives over the past 20 years. But we wouldn’t want to do things their way. We want to give them a good, American-style run for their money. Some people think we could mix the Mustang with off-road driving, but I’m not so sure about that,” Farley said, alluding to the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato.

He describes the Mustang GTD as “a downpayment on the performance Mustangs of the future,” the report added. “At our best, we are an irreverent company. We need to keep doing derivatives that will surprise people,” he said.

Ford Mustang could gain four-door version; will keep V8 engine, manual gearbox “for as long as possible”

Something that stalwarts of the Mustang fanbase can find comfort in is that Ford intends to continue building V8 engine for as long as possible, and Farley promises to fight hard for the continued production of these engines and manual gearboxes.

The CEO believes that Ford is in a better position than specialist performance carmakers because it is developing a range of EV models that will provide emissions offsets for its corporate fleet average to keep its combustion-powered models within bounds for legislation.

On that note, future Mustang models are likely to adopt electrification of some degree in order to reduce carbon emissions as well as to boost performance. “One thing I can promise, however, is that we will never make an all-electric Mustang,” discounting the name-sharing battery-electric crossover that is the Mustang Mach-E.

  • Move to rationalise diesel subsidies on hold, but will be announced when the time is right – Rafizi Ramli

Move to rationalise diesel subsidies on hold, but will be announced when the time is right – Rafizi Ramli

The government says that the planned rationalisation of diesel subsidies is currently on hold, but will be announced when the time is right. According to economy minister Rafizi Ramli, the reason why the government is keeping its cards close to its chest is to avoid speculative inflation from happening as much as it can, as The Star reports.

He said that while data from the Pangkalan Data Utama (PADU) socio-economic database is ready, the timeline for rationalisation hasn’t yet been indicated because there were concerns that certain groups would take advantage of the situation by raising prices for profit should disclosure come about too early.

He said one of the main considerations was the need for proper sequencing to be done in implementing the diesel subsidy rationalisation to ensure there is a balance between wage growth, increasing public income and inflation, and this would take time.

Nevertheless, he said that rationalisation will eventually come about once the government is ready and an appropriate mechanism has been decided on. “(It will happen) because a lot of work, discussion and coordination has been done,” he said.

The government has previously outlined plans to introduce a targeted subsidy mechanism for both diesel and RON 95 petrol, with that for the latter slated to be sometime in the second half of 2024. However, it has yet to announce the mechanism and how these subsidies will be dispensed.

    2025 Bentley Continental GT – next-generation grand tourer gets 782 PS/1,000 Nm plug-in hybrid V8

Bentley has released the first images and details of its next-generation Continental GT, which is due to make its premiere next month.

The upcoming fourth-generation grand tourer will be the first model from the British marque to use the ‘ultra performance hybrid’ powertrain, which brings a plug-in hybrid electric drive setup offering up to 80 km of electric driving range, and a combined powertrain output of 782 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque.

Thus equipped, Bentley says the next Continental GT will be “the most powerful and most dynamically capable” road car in the brand’s history, and the new PHEV V8 powertrain will take over from the recently-discontinued 6.0 litre W12 twin-turbo engine as found in the Continental GT Speed, as well as the pure internal-combustion 4.0L twin-turbo V8 unit as that in the Continental GT V8, among others.

Driveline and chassis technology that will feature in the next Continental GT include active all-wheel-drive with torque vectoring, an electronic limited-slip differential (LSD), 48-volt electrical architecture-powered active anti-roll body control, as well as new dual-valve dampers.

While the upcoming model in these initial images wear camouflage, aspects of its revised exterior are visible, such as headlights which appear to be inspired by the units on the limited-edition Batur, while at the rear, the tail lamps are wider units split between the bootlid and rear bodywork, while the exhaust outlets have also become more angular on the new model.

The Continental GT has been key to boosting Bentley’s sales, bringing the annual volume from around 1,000 cars to the five-figure mark within four years of the first-generation model’s debut. The two-door grand tourer is the marque’s second best-selling model after the Bentayga, with one in every three Bentley vehicles sold being a Continental GT, according to the carmaker.

  • Road accidents in Malaysia in 2023 – 600,000 cases recorded; 6,443 deaths, 65% involved motorcyclists

Road accidents in Malaysia in 2023 – 600,000 cases recorded; 6,443 deaths, 65% involved motorcyclists

A total of around 600,000 road accident cases have been recorded throughout 2023, and in that time 6,443 lives were lost to road accidents, which translates to an average of 18 deaths every day last year. Of these casualties, 65% were motorcyclists, comprised of both riders and pillion riders, aged 16 to 35 years.

The numbers were shared by transport minister Anthony Loke at a press briefing yesterday, and these have been attributed to several factors, including road users’ attitude, increasing volume of vehicles on roads, weak enforcement and political will, as well as a sub-par public transport network.

In addition to the human cost, there is of course the monetary cost of every death that occurs as a result of road accidents. The transport ministry has revealed that this equates to the loss of RM3.1 million for every road death.

Road accidents in Malaysia in 2023 – 600,000 cases recorded; 6,443 deaths, 65% involved motorcyclists

This figure takes into account the loss of an individual who is competent at their workplace, is a core member of their family or household, as well as in terms of their monetary contribution to society. Over a period of one year, the financial loss incurred by the country as a result of death or injury due to accidents is estimated at RM9.28 billion.

The growing number of vehicles on the road is also a contributor to the rising number of accident cases, according to the ministry. Data from 2019 showed that there have been more than 31 million vehicles registered, including motorcycles, and five years on in 2023 that figure has grown to over 36 million vehicles.

To reduce the likelihood of road accidents occurring, one way is to reduce the number of vehicles on roads. In terms of the Malaysian government’s efforts, a subsidy budget of RM200 million has been allocated for bus and train passes, which has achieved a ridership of 200,000 users, according to the ministry.

Road accidents in Malaysia in 2023 – 600,000 cases recorded; 6,443 deaths, 65% involved motorcyclists

The roll-out of targeted fuel subsidies is also hoped to encourage more road users to make use of public transport in their daily routines, it said.

Further efforts in reducing the road death toll also includes stern action against lorry operators which have flouted the law where maximum weight limits are concerned, and this excess truck weight also contributes to the deteriorating condition of roads and highways.

This course of action does not make the government popular, and which has seen the relevant authorities not only issue summonses, but also confiscate the lorries which have fallen foul of the law. Some lorries have been found to be 150% above their maximum permitted weight, and the confiscating of these offending vehicles will indirectly improve the safety of other road users around them.

Separately at the briefing, Loke stated that the transport ministry has not planned to make dashcam fitment compulsory in all vehicles in the country, though motorists are encouraged to do so.

  • Honda to launch seven global EVs under its ‘0’ Series’ – 100% electrification by 2040 target maintained

Honda to launch seven global EVs under its ‘0’ Series’ – 100% electrification by 2040 target maintained

At Honda’s recent business briefing, the Japanese carmaker outlined its electrification initiatives and investment strategy for the coming years. To kick things off, the company said it has not changed it belief that electric vehicles (EVs) are the most effective solution in the area of small mobility products such as motorcycles and automobiles.

As such, it is maintaining its electrification target to make EVs and FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) represent 100% of its global vehicle sales by 2040. Looking at the trend from a longer-term perspective, Honda is confident that the EV shift will continue to proceed steadily,” said Honda’s director, president and representative executive officer (global CEO), Toshihiro Mibe.

“Without getting too caught up in the current changes in the situation, Honda must look ahead to the period of EV popularisation, which will begin in the second half of the 2020s and build a strong EV brand and a strong EV business from a medium- to long-term perspective,” he added.

Honda to launch seven global EVs under its ‘0’ Series’ – 100% electrification by 2040 target maintained

The company is also sticking to its plan announced three years ago to make EVs and FCEVs represent 40% of its global auto sales by 2030, and to produce more than two million EVs. To support the planned production, Honda will establish a vertically-integrated EV value chain with a central focus on batteries.

The targets set for this initiative include reducing the cost of batteries procured in North America by more than 20% compared to what’s current by 2030. This will be backed by the joint venture with LG Energy Solution, which will see an EV battery plant with an annual capacity of 40 GWh begin operations in 2025.

The company is also working with GS Yuasa in Canada to develop EV batteries for in-house production. Honda will then proceed to internalise production by producing cathode materials with POSCO Future M, and separators with Asahi Kasei, at our respective new joint venture plants to be constructed. A competitive business structure will also be set up with the aim of reducing overall production cost by approximately 35%.

Honda to launch seven global EVs under its ‘0’ Series’ – 100% electrification by 2040 target maintained

On the matter of products, the Honda 0 Series – a global EV series – will consist of seven models to be launched globally by 2030 covering various segments. These vehicles will follow the company’s M/M (Man Maximum, Machine Minimum) concept and are expected to be about 100 kg lighter compared to its initial EVs.

The first of the 0-branded EVs will be introduced in the second half of the 2020s and come with a digital UX (user experience), system-on-chip (SOC) for AI, comprehensive ADAS and a core ECU, the last of which consolidates multiple ECUs to form a single “brain” for the entire vehicle.

For the Chinese market, a total of 10 Honda-brand EVs will be introduced by 2027, with EVs set to represent 100% of automobile sales in China by 2035. The Ye series has already been unveiled there to join the e:N series currently available.

In Japan, the N-Van e:, a commercial-use small EV, will go in sale in the fall, while this year will see the introduction of electric motorcycles powered by the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP). Within fiscal year 2026 (FY2026), two more vehicles with MPPs will be launched.

As for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), Honda says there is still strong demand for such models in the market, so it will continue to further advance performance and enhance the line-up globally.

Naturally, these initiatives require a fair bit of investment, which is why Honda is planning to invest approximately 10 trillion yen (about RM300 billion) in resources over a 10-year period through FY2031.

  • Three-lorry accident on PLUS Sungkai to Slim River southbound – all lanes closed, exit Tapah or Bidor

Take note, all who are planning to travel outstation today, or if you’re already on the road. An accident involving three lorries happened early this morning at KM367 of the PLUS North South Highway, southbound between Sungkai and Slim River.

As such, all three lanes of the highway are closed and removal works are ongoing, and PLUS is asking motorists heading from the north towards KL to exit at Tapah or Bidor.

The latest update provided by LLM is from 8.47 am, and it says that all lanes are still closed. A contra lane has been activated from KM366.6 to KM368.5, and traffic is slow for two kilometres before the Sungkai toll plaza.

Users are advised to take alternative routes. This means the Federal Route 1 a.k.a. ‘old road’ if you’re heading towards KL. The last exit you can take to avoid the accident site and Sungkai toll jam is Bidor. Drive safe.

West Coast Expressway – Section 7 Tanjong Karang-Assam Jawa 71% completed, ready by March 2026

Construction of the Tanjong Karang-Assam Jawa alignment of Section 7 of the West Coast Expressway (WCE) has reached 71% and is expected to be completed by March 2026, reports Bernama.

According to works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the alignment is being constructed over two parts – Section 7A and Section 7B – covering a distance of 29.5 km. “Construction of Section 7A starts from the Assam Java Interchange to Sungai Terap Farm involving a distance of 19.5 km, while Section 7B from the Sungai Terap Farm to Tanjong Karang Interchange is 10-km long. As of April, work progress for Section 7A had reached 91%, while Section 7B was already at 44%” he said.

When completed, Section 7 of the WCE will reduce travel time for motorists by an hour compared to the existing federal road. This will also reduce traffic density on the North-South Expressway (NSE) as motorists are able to use the alignment as an alternative route, especially during weekends and festive seasons.

“We admit that the soil structure of the construction site is quite soft, which requires reclamation work to be done in stages, but we are confident that it is not a major issue, and that the construction can be completed within the specified period,” Nanta added.
