  • 2027 Mitsubishi Pajero to debut on September 2 – fifth-gen off-road SUV to be based on Triton with S-AWC

2027 Mitsubishi Pajero to debut on September 2 – fifth-gen off-road SUV to be based on Triton with S-AWC

After weeks of teasing, Mitsubishi has now confirmed that it will officially unveil the fifth-generation Pajero next week on September 2, 2026.

In the lead up to the all-new Pajero’s debut, its maker has been dropping small tidbits of information about the off-road SUV. To start, it will be closely associated to the Triton pick-up truck and use a pure ladder-frame construction, albeit modified to suit the Pajero clientele that wants the best of both worlds: off-road capability and on-road comfort.

To handle rough terrain, the “cross-country SUV,” as it is referred to by Mitsubishi, will be equipped with the company’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) technology and is expected to come with turbodiesel power. The Triton’s 2.4 litre mill is likely to be offered, with reports also hinting at hybrid powertrains.

However, hybrid power could be reserved for other iterations of the Pajero, which will reportedly become a family of models. In the past, the Pajero name has been used for mechanically unrelated models like the Pajero Mini and iO, which are aimed at different customer sets and differ heavily from the main character SUV.

In addition to a ladder-frame construction and S-AWC, the Pajero proper will come with the Multi Meter, a modern take on the triple gauge pod that sat on the dashboard of older Pajeros featuring digital screens. We’ll get the full picture in just a few days’ time, so stay tuned.

Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia 2026 launched – Oct 2-4 at MAEPS; tickets on sale end-August, priced from RM48

Tokyo Auto Salon Malaysia (TAS Malaysia) was officially launched over the weekend on Sunday (August 23, 2026), and with it comes more information about the event formerly known as Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur (TAS KL) that ran for three years from 2023 to 2025.

As previously reported, TAS Malaysia takes place from October 2-4 this year, with the confirmed location being Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in Selangor. On all three days, the event will be open to the public from 10am to 10pm.

In its press release, the TAS Malaysia organising committee said ticket prices will start from RM48, with no less than eight ticket classes available. These include early bird, student, normal, family, early entry pass, collector fast lane, three-day access combo and VIP experience, with finalised pricing for each set to be revealed when sales begin at the end of August – we’ll update this page accordingly.

Visitors to TAS Malaysia can look forward to a wide range of customised vehicles that celebrate JDM culture, motorsports as well as famous car tuners. The shift to MAEPS also allows for drift demonstrations at a dedicated outdoor area, which was something that TAS KL did not have.

  • Review rules governing use of sirens and beacon lights by emergency vehicles, VIP escorts – road safety experts

Review rules governing use of sirens and beacon lights by emergency vehicles, VIP escorts – road safety experts

While PDRM has said that government vehicles using beacons and sirens must prioritise other road users’ safety, this hasn’t always been the case, and road safety experts say that the rules governing the use of sirens and beacon lights by emergency vehicles and VIP escorts are in need a review, with a clear, uniform criteria on when these can be activated, who can authorise their use and under what circumstances.

They said that escort movements must be made safer and more predictable for other road users, with standard procedures covering speed, lane changes, overtaking and intersections, while giving motorists enough time to react. More importantly, they stated that such privileges should be treated as an operational necessity, not an automatic entitlement based on rank or status, the New Straits Times reports.

According to Universiti Putra Malaysia road safety research centre head, associate professor Law Teik Hua, the review should examine how escort movements are conducted, as the main hazard was not the sirens or escort vehicles themselves, but how priority movements were carried out.

Law said that while sirens and beacons indicate that emergency and escort vehicles had priority, drivers could still be unaware of their presence until the last moment. “This is especially dangerous at intersections, where ordinary drivers might not realise where the escort car is coming from or whether there are other vehicles that have been stopped,” he said.

Review rules governing use of sirens and beacon lights by emergency vehicles, VIP escorts – road safety experts

He said a dedicated standard operating procedure would be the most effective way to improve VIP and emergency movements. The SOP should specify when sirens and beacons can be used, permissible speed limits, procedures for lane changes and overtaking as well as mandatory speed reductions at intersections and crossings.

Road Safety Council member and social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye echoed the call for a full review of the rules. He said concerns regarding this were justified, as VIP escorts and certain emergency vehicles often moved on the roads in ways that put other drivers at risk. As a result, he said that drivers have to brake hard, swerve into crowded lanes, or slow down suddenly, often with barely enough time to react safely.

“It is even more worrying when sirens and beacon lights are treated not as urgent warnings, but as a free pass. Some drivers seem to think that with a siren, speed limits do not matter and red lights need not be obeyed. They expect every other road user to get out of the way instantly, without thinking about road conditions or other people’s safety,” he said.

Lee said that while most agree that the prime minister, royalty and official foreign guests deserved such escorts, their use should be an exception rather than a right for ministers and senior officials.”These are safety tools, not symbols of status,” he said.

“No one is above the law. A siren does not cancel traffic rules, and a flashing light does not make safety less important. Every road user, no matter their rank, deserves to travel safely, and every road user must drive with care,” he added.

Senior criminologist Datuk Dr P. Sundramoorthy proposed a three-tier framework covering security, operational necessity and ceremonial or protocol movements, with traffic priority normally limited to the first two when objectively justified.

He said that while the law regulated the fitting and use of special warning lights, with authorised categories specified, there is an important distinction between being authorised to possess or use an emergency warning device and being justified in activating it for a particular journey. “Rank alone should not create an automatic entitlement,” he said, adding that protection did not necessarily require sirens and flashing lights on every journey.

  • Monorail issues resolved, back to normal ops at 11am

Monorail issues resolved, back to normal ops at 11am

KL’s Monorail faced some issues this morning but it has been resolved and operations went back to normal at 10.58 am, Rapid KL announced.

Earlier today, the Monorail’s schedule faced delays due to a train that had ‘component issues’ at the Bukit Bintang station, causing it to move slowly. Following that, trains from KL Sentral had to turn back at Hang Tuah, trains from Hang Tuah turned back at Bukit Nanas, and trains from Bukit Nanas turned back at Titiwangsa – all on Platform 1.

Rapid KL’s technical team then went to the location and managed to pinpoint the issue and rectify it, before ensuring that the train was safe to restart operations.

The Monorail is now running normally, but the technical team will continue to monitor the situation and extra staff – deployed in the morning when the problem struck – will continue to be on standby at affected stations to assist passengers, Rapid KL says.

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will provide eight additional KTM Komuter Utara rail services for the Butterworth and Padang Besar route from Thursday until Monday (August 27 to 31) in conjunction with the school holidays and National Day celebrations, the rail operator has stated.

These train services were added through the implementation of the KTM Komuter Northern Sector special timetable in order to meet the anticipated increase in passenger demand, it said. This would increase the total number of services on the Butterworth – Padang Besar – Butterworth route from 38 services to 46 services daily.

With the increase in train frequency, KTMB expects the volume of passengers to increase by 30% compared to normal days, with the additional services able to accommodate up to 5,000 additional passengers a day, or a total of 25,000 passengers throughout the period.

These additional rail services are among KTMB’s proactive measures to provide more travel time options for passengers intending to embark on journeys between Penang, Kedah and Perlis during this period, stated the rail operator.

Travellers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and refer to the KTM Komuter northern sector special timetable, which will be in effect throughout the period. Schedule and fare information can be obtained through the KITS Style application, the KTMB official website and social media channels, it said.

Last week, KTMB announced additional ETS services for the school holidays and National Day celebrations, for the dates of August 21 to 23, August 28 to 31 and September 4 to 6.

  • BHPetrol’s ‘Saya Taula’ Merdeka ad shows Malaysians from a foreign worker’s perspective, a refreshing take

BHPetrol’s ‘Saya Taula’ Merdeka ad shows Malaysians from a foreign worker’s perspective, a refreshing take

Sometimes it takes someone from the outside to give proper perspective, an objective view that might be obscured when you’re in a bubble. We have quite a few of those in Malaysia, a unique country made up of various cultures, ethnic backgrounds and religions.

To say that everything is perfect, like the MV of a flag-waving patriotic song, is denial. However, the more time one spends on his/her social media bubble (not everyone shares your circle’s views, and the algorithm will suck you in deep and fast) or consuming news (bad news sells), the worse things seem in terms of perpaduan.

Is it actually that bad? Are we doomed? Hey, even siblings fight. How about not focusing solely on our differences but on the positives instead? As hard it is to see for some, there are plenty of positives, as BHPetrol pump attendant Shakoor Rahman observes in this Merdeka ad.

Shakoor is a foreign worker, and just like the guys at your local petrol station, he sees a lot of our gelagat and interaction with one another.

“Kadang-kadang gaduh, kadang-kadang bising, tapi saya tau diorang sayang sesama diorang. Diorang sayang negara ini. Saya orang luar, turut rasa bangga. Saya taula,” he says, as the ad ends with the line “kadang-kadang yang paling nampak keindahan adalah mereka yang melihatnya dari luar”. It’s just the onions and my sinus. And the haze is bad damn bad today!

This Merdeka, how about focusing on what’s good instead of our differences, while working on reducing those differences with a bit of bertimbang rasa? Politicians are always trying to pit us against one another for their own gain; let’s all remember this before taking their next bait.

Also, there are many Shakoors among us – they’ve helped built our country and are helping to keep it running; let’s show them kindness too. Hat tip to the creative team behind this ad – by showing the usual unity values required of a Merdeka ad from a foreigner’s POV, you’ve literally thought out of the box. Good one!

Eight arrested following viral video showing traffic being stopped for illegal motorcycle race on Johor expressway

Eight suspects, including a motorsports influencer, have been remanded for four days over a viral video showing traffic being stopped for an illegal race on the Second Link Expressway in Johor.

As reported by NST, the suspects, aged between 26 and 45, are being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said all eight were arrested by detectives from the Kulai traffic investigation and enforcement division at 11.54am yesterday (August 23, 2026).

In a statement posted on August 22, Kulai district police said it picked up on the viral video that showed two motorcycles racing along the expressway northbound from the Senai interchange towards the Johor Premium Outlet interchange on Saturday.

The 33-second clip also saw several men stopping traffic to allow the illegal race to proceed, with a group setting off firecrackers to celebrate the end of the race.

  • Ford to use Geely’s GEA platform for new European SUV

Ford to use Geely’s GEA platform for new European SUV

Following the announcement in July this year that Ford and Geely have formed a joint venture in Spain for localised production at the former’s Valencia plant, Automotive News now reports that Ford will use Geely’s Global Intelligent New Energy Architecture (GEA) platform for a new SUV slated for European markets.

This was confirmed by the new chairman of Geely Automobile Holdings (Geely Auto), An Conghui, during a company earnings call recently. However, while the base is the GEA, the multi-powertrain SUV will have a rally-bred design and driving dynamics evoking the Ford’s racing heritage.

As per an earlier release, Ford’s JV with Geely will officially begin operations in the first half of 2027, with the first new vehicles expected to roll off the line in 2028. Within the JV, Geely owns a 34% stake, while the remaining 66% is Ford’s.

In addition to Ford, Geely also has a partnership with Renault that includes the Horse Powertrain joint venture, a 34% stake in Renault Korea Motors as well as a strategic stake in the French carmaker’s Brazilian production site, the last of which will also see Renault use Geely’s GEA for its vehicles.

Motive power in the Com variant is a 170 PS/250 Nm motor, down from the 203 PS/350 Nm figures of the Lux variant, while DC fast charging is 120 kW in the Com, instead of the 150 kW offered in the Lux.

AC charging is unchanged at 7 kW, though the lower motor outputs mean a 0-100 km/h time of eight seconds for the Com (seven seconds for the Lux).

Elsewhere, differences in specification see the Com variant get fabric seat upholstery (ventilated leatherette in the Lux), 17-inch black alloy wheels on 215/60R17 tyres (18-inch alloys on 225/55R18 tyres on the Lux), and the omission of a panoramic sunroof.

Also left out from the Com are the powered tailgate with kick sensor, 360-degree view camera (reverse camera on the Com), rain-sensing wipers, rear seat reading lamp, wireless phone charging, and rear centre armrest. The ventilated and powered front seats on the Lux are manually adjusted on the Com (six-way for the driver, four-way for the front passenger).

In terms of safety equipment, both the Com and Lux variants of the MG S5 EV in Malaysia are equipped with seven airbags, and the MG Pilot ADAS 2.5 suite of driving assistance systems which includes Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.

As with the Lux variant, the MG S5 EV Com is locally assembled in Pegoh, Melaka, and both are sold with a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/180,000 km battery pack warranty, and an eight-year/160,000 km motor control unit warranty. As part of a launch offer, the MG S5 EV Com is sold with a RM3,000 rebate and a complimentary wallbox charger.

Improvements to targeted diesel subsidy system now expected to be announced within a month – Armizan

Earlier this month, finance minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said that several improvements to the targeted diesel subsidy system were being studied and would be announced by the government in the next one to two months.

Now, it could be sooner. According to domestic trade and cost of living (KPDN) minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the government is expected to announce improvements to the diesel subsidy mechanism in less than a month.

He said that KPDN is optimistic that the announcement could be made earlier than the one to two-month timeframe estimated previously as engagement sessions with relevant parties had been held and all feedback had been submitted to the finance ministry, Bernama reports.

Improvements to targeted diesel subsidy system now expected to be announced within a month – Armizan

“Feedback and input from the Sabah and Sarawak state governments, as well as the ministry, have been fully conveyed to the finance ministry, the federal government agency responsible for the matter. Several improvements have been identified to ensure that the implementation of the subsidy continues to safeguard the interests of the people,” he said.

As indicated by Amir Hamzah earlier this month, the improvements include simplifying the application process, relaxing the eligibility criteria for sambung bayar (taking over hire-purchase payments) vehicles, and the allowing of quota transfers to immediate family members.

  • Selangor and federal territories department join forces to combat floods in Klang Valley with five-action plan

Selangor and federal territories department join forces to combat floods in Klang Valley with five-action plan

The Selangor state government and the federal government, through the federal territories department, have agreed on five-action plan aimed at reducing flood incidents affecting residents in the Klang Valley.

This was revealed in a joint statement issued by federal territories minister Hannah Yeoh and Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, with the measures decided upon said to encompass land management, reservoir capacity, green spaces, sustainable urban development and water flow.

As part of the plan, both sides will hold a technical meeting within two weeks to identify the scope and where projects should be carried out, the costs of these projects and source of funding as well as how they will be implemented.

Preliminary details from this meeting will be prepared before the next parliamentary sitting and the tabling of the 2027 Budget. Following this, periodic meetings will be held to monitor the progress and completion of projects.

Selangor and federal territories department join forces to combat floods in Klang Valley with five-action plan

The two administrations also want a study to be carried out on the Batu Dam and Klang Gates Dam to determine if there is enough capacity to handle the region’s water management needs for the next 20 to 30 years.

Meanwhile, relevant technical agencies will look upstream, including in Selangor, suitable sites to build new flood retention ponds serving to hold back excess water. On a related note, the Selangor department of irrigation and drainage (JPS) will has identified three existing ponds in need to a capacity upgrade.

These are ponds in Kampung Laksamana, Sungai Ketas and Bukit Lagong, the last of which poses a little complication as it sits within a forest reserve and would have to be degazetted if the land is used for the proposed flood-retention expansion.

Another measure listed in the plan is to coordinate river dredging and sediment removal works across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The KL JPS is also tasked to find a 30-acre site in Selangor to dispose of dredged material, taking into account technical and land requirements as well as how the sediment will be managed and its potential impact on the environment.

  • 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

Previewed in June, the Porsche Cayenne Electric has been launched in Malaysia, some nine months after it made its world premiere in November. The third all-electric model from Zuffenhausen after the Taycan and Macan, the fourth generation of the seminal performance SUV will be sold alongside the current petrol model, giving buyers the luxury of choice.

The Cayenne Electric is available in standard and sleeker Coupé variants, with prices starts at RM699,000 nett (without options) for the base Cayenne, rising up to RM759,000 for the Cayenne S and RM969,999 for the range-topping Cayenne Turbo. As for the Coupé, that car is priced at RM749,000 for the entry-level variant, RM805,000 for the S and RM999,999 for the Turbo.

Built on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) – co-developed with Audi – as the Macan, the Cayenne is quite a bit larger than before. The need to fit a big battery means that its wheelbase has been stretched by some 128 mm over the petrol model to 3,023 mm.

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

This has resulted in a 55 mm increase in overall length to 4,985 mm; the car is also three millimetres narrower at 1,980 mm and five millimetres lower at 1,674 mm. The Coupé is an additional 24 mm lower at 1,650 mm, thanks to its lower-slung roofline.

The Cayenne is offered in three variants, all with dual-motor all-wheel drive but without the Taycan’s two-speed rear transmission. Even the base model churns out 408 PS (300 kW) and 835 Nm, or 442 PS (325 kW) in launch control. Activate it and the car is able to sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 230 km/h.

One rung up is the Cayenne S, introduced in March. This produces 544 PS (400 kW) and a whopping 1,080 Nm, rising up to a devilish 666 PS (490 kW) with launch control activated. Zero to 100 km/h is demolished in 3.8 seconds, while top whack rises slightly to 250 km/h.

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

    Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupé

But the one you’ll really want is the Cayenne Turbo, which raises performance to a whole new level. In standard mode it already makes 857 PS (650 kW) and a startling 1,500 Nm, but put it into launch control and it pushes out 1,156 PS (850 kW), flinging it to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Top speed is capped to 260 km/h, which you’ll reach in no time.

To keep the 2.6 tonne kerb weight in check, the Cayenne comes as standard with air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive dampers, as well as regenerative braking at up to 600 kW – as much as a Formula E car. A Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) Plus limited-slip rear differential, rear-wheel steering at up to five degrees and carbon ceramic brakes are available on the options list.

Also optional is Porsche Active Ride that made its debut on the third-generation Panamera. Offered for the first time on an SUV, it replaces conventional anti-roll bars with hydraulic dampers to virtually eliminate body roll and even lean in the corners like a motorcycle, without sacrificing ride comfort.

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

Even though owners will rarely take the Cayenne off-road, it has nevertheless been developed to be capable off the beaten track. To that end, its air suspension is able to raise the ground clearance to 245 mm, and there’s also an off-road package with a different front bumper to increase approach angle. One slight disappointment is a maximum water-wading depth of only 550 mm, which is lower than some hardier rivals.

Despite its towering performance, the massive 113 kWh NMC battery means the Cayenne still offers a decent amount of WLTP-rated range – 642 km for the base model, 652 km for the S and 624 km for the all-singing, all-dancing Turbo. Thanks to its sleeker, more aerodynamic shape, the Coupé offers more range at 661 km for the Cayenne, 669 km for the Cayenne S and 637 km for the Cayenne Turbo.

As with other Porsche EVs, the Cayenne features an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling DC fast charging at up to 390 kW (up to 400 kW in ideal conditions) and topping up the huge battery from 10 to 80% in under 16 minutes. It will also support up to 11 kW of AC charging (22 kW optional) and is the world’s first EV to feature a wireless charging option ex-factory, also at up to 11 kW.

2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Malaysia – up to 1,156 PS, 669 km WLTP, wireless charging, priced fr RM699k

On the outside, the Cayenne remains recognisably a Porsche, albeit with a slightly more angular design with slimmer matrix LED headlights as per the Taycan and Macan. The side view is characterised by a sweeping glasshouse and a pronounced upswept “flick” in the flanks, while the rear end is decidedly busy for the brand with its extremely wide taillight bar that sweeps downwards towards the centre.

Aerodynamic efficiency was a big consideration this time around, so the Cayenne gains an active grille shutter and rear spoiler, as well as front air curtains, aero wheels (which range from 20 to 22 inches in diameter), a completely flat underbody and a large rear diffuser – all for a drag coefficient as low as 0.25. The Turbo model gains additional active blades that jut out from the rear bumper corners.

The Coupé model gets a sleeker 911-inspired “flyline” (roofline) that sweeps downwards towards the rear deck, which itself is longer and flatter than it is on the petrol version, giving it a slightly sedan-like look. The good news is that the more streamlined shape has resulted in a useful reduction in drag coefficient to 0.23, helping to deliver the aforementioned range increase. The display unit seen here is also fitted with the nameplate’s first powered doors, which will be offered as an option later on.

Inside, the Cayenne is all screen, with the visually impressive array consisting of a 14.25-inch curved OLED instrument display and an optional 14.9-inch passenger display. The highlight here is of course the Flow Display – a striking OLED infotainment touchscreen with a horizontal bend to split the display and control areas. Together with an ergonomic palm rest, this eases the operation of the lower half.

Blissfully, the Cayenne retains physical air-con and volume controls just ahead of the said palm rest. There’s also an augmented reality head-up display with an effective display size of 87 inches, AI-enhanced voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a magnetic pad for the Qi wireless charger – the latter is housed within a large adaptable storage bin with removable cupholders.

Practicality is a large part of the Cayenne’s appeal, so rear passengers get powered seat recline and fore/aft adjustment (recline only on the Coupé), as well as plenty of extra legroom thanks to the wheelbase stretch. The boot is also massive at 781 litres for the Cayenne and 584 litres for the Coupé, and there is also a 90 litre front boot, openable by swiping the top of the bumper.

  • Gigafactory Malaysia EV battery plant in Sepang – initial capacity 1 MWh/year, exports expected to start in 2027

Gigafactory Malaysia EV battery plant in Sepang – initial capacity 1 MWh/year, exports expected to start in 2027

In July this year, it was reported that NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) would begin small-scale production of homegrown graphene-enhanced lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles (EVs). This will be carried out by its subsidiary, Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GMSB), at factory spanning 15,000 square feet in Suria Industrial Park in Sepang.

The company has now provided more details of its EV battery business following a tour of its Sepang facility that took place on the final day of the fourth ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) running from August 19-21.

In a FAQ released to us, NMB said GMSB, which was established in 2022, is not merely assembling or rebadging imported batteries. Instead, the graphene-enhanced lithium-ion battery technology, including intellectual property, materials development, cell engineering, product development and manufacturing know-how, is the result of long development pathway that began with the National Graphene Action Plan 2020 (NGAP 2020) launched in 2014.

This is a strategic initiative launched by the government via NMB (an agency under the ministry of science, technology and innovation (MOSTI) that aimed to make Malaysia a global graphene innovation hub.

Next came the NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI) launched in 2021 to develop and commercialise advanced energy storage systems. The NESTI programme saw the development of graphene-based lithium-ion pouch cells, water-based aluminium-ion batteries as well as sodium-ion alternatives, with the Hydrogen Electric Vehicle Battery Centre (HEBATT) serving as a dedicated R&D and fabrication hub.

In addition to the technologies mentioned, NMB also has solid-state, metal-organic framework and redox flow batteries in its pipeline. Today though, the past efforts are culminating in production of graphene-enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

As part of this initiative, GMSB is working with Khon Kaen University (KKU) in Thailand, which provides manufacturing support. Another regional partnership is with Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) that saw the launch of Bateri Nusantara that combines GMSB’s downstream battery technology and manufacturing capabilities with NBRI’s expertise in battery materials.

Starting at a smaller scale, GMSB’s initial production capacity at the Sepang facility is approximately 1 MWh, or about 92,000 battery cells, per year. The company says its initial focus will be on electric two-wheelers (motorcycles) and based on indicative 5 kWh battery pack, its annual output would be enough for approximately 200 electric two-wheeler battery packs. This is part of an initial commercialisation phase that will also see an exploration into portable energy devices.

Given the company’s name, 1 MWh annually is a bit of an irony but the company says this is merely a starting point as part of a RM20 million cumulative investment. With increased customer demand, commercial commitments, strategic partnerships and further investments for improved manufacturing capacity, GWh-scale annual production is the target scale the company has in mind.

Initial production in 2026 is expected to serve primarily domestic demand under a build-to-order model, with overseas shipment likely to commence in 2027. On the matter of demand, GMSB says it has secured an order for 25 kWh of battery capacity from an undisclosed local organisation.

The graphene-enhanced lithium-ion batteries use a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry instead of lithium iron phosphate (LFP), with the company explaining that the former “continues to offer advantages in energy density for applications where battery weight, space, range and power performance are important considerations.”

Graphene is incorporated into both electrodes to enhance the performance characteristics of the established NMC chemistry while maintaining commercial manufacturability and scalability. While this technology is the immediate priority for now, the company says it is evaluating other chemistries as well.

Based on internal testing, the graphene-enhanced NMC batteries have managed to exceed 1,000 charge-discharge cycles while retaining over 90% of their original capacity. The company notes it is progressing towards independent third-party testing and verification as part of the next phase of product validation, which will also cover battery safety.

The raw materials are sourced from domestic and international suppliers, with the company looking into making its supply chain more robust as demand builds. A strategic cooperation with nickel-rich Indonesia is being touted along with NMB’s nickel phytomining research in Sabah, local production of graphene and graphite as well as end-of-life battery recycling for a circular economy approach.

On the broader EV ecosystem, NMB is developing local capabilities in EV components, energy storage, charging systems and ICE-to-EV conversion through its Enabling Mobility Electrification for Green Economy (EMERGE) and Rapid Electric Vehicle Innovations Validation Ecosystem (REVIVE) initiatives.
